People make jokes about celebrities being raped, drunks, or attempted suicide and odds are the celebrity will never hear it.
But as an attempted suicide survivor, I promise you that your friends, family, and kids did hear you. And you just made it clear to them that they can never trust you in their moment of weakness.

Shannon, as someone who has been personally affected by family members with both alcoholism and suicide, I've always admired your integrity and support for people to not be afraid to get help for whatever they may be dealing with personally. I believe that's one of the many , many reasons you are so pupular. Please keep up the great work!

The fact that THG/TEG doesn't spread gossip, say inappropriate things, or try to elevate viewership by cutting other people down, are all reasons Shannon is one of the best creators on TH-cam. And a darned good human being.

    Good points shannon.
I spent 43 years in broadcasting.
Just retired in 2021 (to abby haha)
    Grew up in burnaby.
I ve watched your channel since likely 2018ish.
I think you do a very good job, (obviously im just a few years older than you)
I do think you cover the league very well and fairly.
Thats the rub, when you listen to jim robson ( i know im old) you could never tell who he was cheering for or not.
He called the play. I think you do a very good job of covering all teams as well as you can.
Keep up the good work, i find the content to be very engaging.
The old radio guy in me tries to get all my old broadcast crew to give you a watch and listen.
    Thanks for the content.
From an older (wont say old) broadcaster

From how Gary embraces the boos at game events, I think he has a dry sense of humor and would laugh a bit at your skits.

Thanks for this Shannon. I’m tired of the “this generation is soft. This generation is “blank” compared to MY generation”
People have been unaliving themselves way before the year 2000. People that say “oh this generation, oh this era” are angry they’re being called out for being a scumbag. Tough. Be a better person

It's people like you that make me grateful I woke up the next morning that while back.
Also a video on the baseball jerseys would be cool if you ever get the chance to get a video on it

I am 51. I grew up in a time when slurs of all sorts-name it-were tossed around with abandon. I stopped because I eventually realized that words can hurt and kill. I have Cerebral Palsy. Walk and talk fine but those cutting words made-and make it-difficult for me to trust people.

A good reminder is that players might not be seeking content like yours out but “hey did you see this, hey did you see this, can you believe that they said…” and it passes until it reaches the subject

I know personally I've experienced this on a neutral level. There's an actress/model I have a thing for. Not going to say who. But I've been following her on Instagram for years. And every once in a while I'll comment, when I'm looking forward to a project she's working on. But with so many people following and commenting, I always assumed, "Oh, nothing I say is ever going to stand out. I know she's not _really_ reading all our comments."
That was until the day she actually did reply to me. And at that moment I had two thoughts fighting for control of my brain. One, _"How about that? She actually is aware I exist. That's... something... I guess."_ But then another thought was fighting for attention, _"Oh no! She actually sees all the creepy, sexist, or plain old mean comments trolls and stuff leave? That's horrible. I'm surprised she ever responds to anybody."_

There is a time and place. On several other podcasts I listen to, some focused on mental health, others focused on different social groups, that joke is accepted. In this context it is totally unacceptable.

  • @rockinmel1
    @rockinmel1 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Great reminder, Shannon - one thing though, you didn't cover the role of sports-talk media in all this. There are guys being paid to talk for hours, and fill it with as attention-attracting an opinion as possible. And as bad as guys like Stephen A. Smith or Skip Bayless are, some of the local guys (especially on the East Coast) are worse. People DO learn their behavior from people with big platforms, as seen on places like X/Twitter, where people will argue to the death to defend a cringe take, and outright trolls have been multiplying, with blue checkmarks for higher visibility.

  • @dj4aces
    @dj4aces 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

The number one reason people I know stay quiet about their mental health is because they don't trust the people around them to understand or respect their problems. As someone who is trusted among my group of friends, I don't talk about their problems with others either, and I absolutely don't poke fun about it. What was said on that podcast was incredibly reprehensible, and I sincerely hope they've all learned something here.
We can talk all kinds of crap about the players we follow on our teams, but folks need to be aware that even a podcast of only 10, 30, 100 followers can be accessed by anyone, including the very players you're talking crap about.

For professional athletes going forward, regardless of sport, should there be training on the mental side of a sports athlete or celebrity status?
On paper, we can call it “mental toughness training”, the title can use some working.
The idea being, athletes at the top, should be tough enough to mentally handle the public and media, as well as to handle the stress of high level competition as well.
The flip side to such an idea, where the debate begins, is, how to execute such an idea. Some suggestions may be more brutal than others. The fine details are how to execute such a thing will always be under scrutiny, no matter the way is it carried out

    oh the laine thing.
    well,what is a celebrity ?
    is a podcaster a celebrity?
    is a hockey player a celebrity ?
is a talking head on tv a celebrity?
i am of the opinion .that hockey players as well as most sports people.are just people.
you are correct when you say this is the age of knowing everything there is to know.
there are always people of lesser talent, willing to say anything as long as they get paid.
in my opinion those people hold little interest to me.i weed them out.
how famous does a person need to be? should be a question.
does a person need more money than they can spend?
does a person need to extend his brand, beyond what he is able to hold.
or do they need just enough to be happy? that way they dont expose themselfs into saying stupid things.eventually if your mouth flaps, people let something slip.
as i have said along time ago. you shannon are like the guy at work you can talk to aboot hockey.
as with most things.i would assume hockey players like to watch hockey.like an everymans opinion .one that is not prone to say stupid stuff.
so im not shocked actual players watch your content.
i would also assume that there would be teams media watching as well.to see if you are of the correct backbone to not fk things up for them.
live like its 1984 ,is one of my mottos :O
    the man is always watching.
podcasts are yesterdays news.do what you do.youll be fine.you might be better off not having the spotlight of an entire network on your shoulders .

Once your life is directly impacted by suicide of a friend or loved one, you will never be the same again. It’s not “funny”. Using expressions like “I would kill myself if that happened”, is not acceptable either.

i think free speech applies if the other person(s) have equal time to present their point of view. as soon as people start talking over one and other, free speech is gone. part of having free speech is listening to other people's speech. if you can't listen, then maybe you shouldn't be speeching.
