@brianmiller2365 - if the world was like it is portrayed in these fantastic old movies I'd agree with you - but no such world has ever existed unfortunately.
This movie was made in 1940 when America was recovering from the Great Depression and about to enter WWII. Those were tough times and a movie like this was escapist entertainment.
One of the things that is so great about this is that Sterling Holloway sings with not only the sincerity of the character he's playing, but also with that of the person he is. So very touching.
Underrated Christmas story: begins on a light note, with Stanwyck and MacMurray zinging one-liners at each other, and ends as a really sweet, touching love story. Stanwyck is absolutely radiant.
A touching moment in a beautiful film. From a time when the "character" actors could knock the socks off of today's superstars! Thank goodness these films were saved!
@@1948DESMOND Sterling Hayden wasn't in this movie, so he didn't mime to anyone. But Sterling Holloway, who was singing here, had a unique voice that makes it obvious that he was doing his own singing - as he did in countless other films.
When you come to the end of a perfect day, And you sit alone with your thought, While the chimes ring out with a carol gay For the joy that the day has brought, Do you think what the end of a perfect day Can mean to a tired heart, When the sun goes down with a flaming ray, And the dear friends have to part?
Oh my Sterling Holloway... He was always in character. A Perfect Day sold more sheet music in its time than any song from 1930 on!!! 25 million copies!!!
I agree, a wonderful motion picture - and very touching. Enjoyed watching it with my Mom whom I cared for until she passed from dementia at age ninety. I'm all alone now, except my family being my Tabby brothers, "The Boys." Thank you for sharing this...
Well, this is the end of a perfect day, Near the end of a journey, too, But it leaves a thought that is big and strong, With a wish that is kind and true. For mem'ry has painted this perfect day With colors that never fade, And we find at the end of a perfect day, The soul of a friend we've made.
Sterling was VERY beloved in the community. He was a supremely talented man, versatile and very very kind to everyone. Many great stars called him friend.
I have seen much singing in film and this is almost certainly "live." It is always in synch, and notice how his little gulps and "catches" are reflected in his body movements. It certainly looks very natural and sincere. And I said below, it is one of the gems of TH-cam, musically and visually.
Wonderful voice from a great character actor, Holloway. Barbara Stanwyck is amazing in this movie, in the way she is able to express emotions without speaking in this scene. This scene in this lovely film never fails to bring me to tears.
I thought I recognized Sterling, and I just read through to find out that's who I thought it was. You can almost imagine Winnie the Pooh singing so beautifully too when you hear it :)
When I first heard this song at age 16, I was thinking of the "Little Black Rain Cloud" song by the Sherman Brothers. Sterling Holloway was truly the nicest person in the whole world.
I've always thought Sterling was very under rated, although no one was more perfect for Winnie the Pooh. I never knew he had such a beautiful voice. Thank you for posting.
beautiful, the voice of this man will live in my heart forever, from this beautiful song I could listen to forever, to the voice of my favorite childhood character talking about honey and hufalumps, RIP Sterling Holloway.
So many precious characters like Holloway we loved so well have passed and nobody can take their place. Part of an America we all miss just as much, that I'm afraid now only exists in memories we can share with our grandchildren. R.I.P. Pooh!
This is a wonderfully understated scene that sort of slipped past me the first time or two I saw the movie. It actually sounds like MacMurray (who studied music in college, btw) and Beulah Bondi are singing harmony, and doing pretty well. And Holloway's singing voice is surprisingly good. It's just a touching, beautiful scene; really fine work. Thanks for posting.
I love Sterling Holliway's voice when he sings this song. I just heard that Turner Classic Movies is playing Remember the Night soon, and I wanted to hear the song sooner than that. Thank you NBC for leaving it up.
It's always great to see one of the greatest masters work his craft! I was lucky enough to meet him a few times. I last saw him in 1983 I believe at Santa Ana, College. He was gracious to come to my Theatre arts class and read some of the poetry that he wrote. I loved every movie or show I ever saw him in including the Superman TV show where he played an inventor. You just don't see actors of his caliber any more.
I love this song, The first time I heard it I was 15years old and I was watching TCM and this wonderful Fred MacMurry and Barbara Stanwick movie was on. The Movie was "Remember the Night" 1940.
I knew he could sing because I noticed him in "The Merry Widow" (sometime in the 30s) -- he had a minor role but he sang "Vilia," which is quite a demanding song.
I have listened to every performance of A Perfect Day on UTube. With all the great artists who have recorded this song, this is the most emotionally moving of them all. I would have loved to hear Stanley Holloway continue and sing the second stanza.
I love this song...I love this movie! The simplicity of Times Gone by Just grabs me. .. Of course younger people today. Doesn't understand. A song this simple and beautiful We need more.

First time I have ever heard this delightful and touching song. We are just now watching this movie on TCM and I rushed to call up the song on TH-cam.Thanks for making it available to all.
So, so special & wonderful. It is so sad that all five of these lovely people; actors and actresses have passed away by now. Who could ever be like Barbara Stanwyck or Sterling Holloway? For years I didn't even know that Fred McMurray had acted whatever before Disney's "Flubber" & T/V's "My Three Sons" but here he is and ever terrific in "Remember the Night" again with Barbara Stanwyck. RIP you guys & gals.
I just watched the movie and was so surprised to hear Sterling Holloway's voice sound so beautiful. What a lovely song.....it touches the heart. Thanks for sharing1
The very first time I met him I was very nervous! But he was very gracious. After 5 minutes of talking to him he put me in a very relaxed state of mind. He encouraged me to continue my pursuit of acting. He had many wonderful stories to tell about his acting career. The last time I saw him he really wanted to talk about his poetry! he was very intuitive in his writing.
Agreed - a perfect intimate rendition - I am an opera snob but will love sincere singing from any genre. Thanks so much for posting this special thing.
For me personally, he is the only one that can sing this song so beautifully! Wish he had made a recording of this song. He was so talented.
Why can’t the world still be like this?
@brianmiller2365 - if the world was like it is portrayed in these fantastic old movies I'd agree with you - but no such world has ever existed unfortunately.
@@honeychurchgipsy6 Wow, what a pessimist!
True, but in the past many homes had pianos and someone who could play it, and people were more likely to make their own music.

Well said
His version is so beautiful it gives me chills every time I hear it.
So many Great high points in this Absolute Gem and this is the top!
For me personally , he is the only one that can sing this song so beautifully and with such feeling! Wish he had recorded it.
I love this, for so many reasons! God, I wish I could live in such a sweet age, such a precious time.
You are kind and i feel the same way

Truly, an underrated, excellent movie. Stanwyck is fabulous and it’s a wonderful cast.

I agree with you, honestly. ‘Cause I’d be heartbroken if it was deleted.
Who could ever get enough of Sterling Holloway?! I love this scene and love his voice. Sterling Holloway and Burl Ives, both had voices of silk.
We think that Sterling has the most beautiful and magical voice in the world
No kidding my friend!
He absolutely does, honey.
I know, right?
I also have a good voice. (Not as good as him)
It’s magical anytime Winnie the Pooh sings for you
I can't hear it without crying! So beautiful, sung to perfection by SH!! Thanks for the post!
Same here, Donna... brings me to tears every single time.

Me too!!! From the first phrase!!!🥹 😢
Two great talents right here. Sterling Holloway whose voice could melt the hardest heart and Barbara Stanwyck.
BUT , OLIVE, they are all miming here.
dunno who hayden mimed to but he did it well.
. That is Sterling Holloway singing
Sterling is really singing and Barbara is really playing the piano! Two real talents! Holloway had a beautiful voice!

It isn't Christmas until we've watched REMEMBER THE NIGHT.
@jamesmarshall8836 same in our household!
What happened to our lovely America? This song and this scene capture it all for me.
Well said, Eddie!

I have heard other versions of "Perfect Day" but none even remotely close to this by Sterling Holloway. Voice like silk and honey!
Not only a fantastic voice actor, but also a beautiful singer... it's hard not to love the work of Sterling Holloway :)

The story of the woman who wrote behind this beautiful song is as tender and sad as the tune. Just lovely. I listen to it often.
