Thanks for taking the time to tell and show us all. For me it's what not to buy I timed it and also seen how hard the saw had to work for double the time in comparison to a gas fired saw. I would have expected more for the money.
I bought this saw for one reason. I may use a chainsaw less than a dozen times a year. Not good for a gas saw to sit n not be used much. I seem to always have running issues w my gas saws. For light yard maintenance issues if my battery is charged im good to go.
Outstanding insight informative test video. Battery Powered Electric Chainsaws are still in the "Crawl to Walk" Infancy stage of development. I think the other designs (like the EGO 18 incher) with a Hand tighten Disc self adjustment knob to tighten or loosen the Chain is a superior design to the tool adjustment design. Right now these current battery powered chainsaws are good to go for a Homestead or a Sportsman. For taking on a trekking journey adventure into the Forest where one might encounter an necessity or emergency situation requiring such. I think the future looks promising as to overall improvements to the battery operated electric chainsaw. It would be interesting to see a comparison between this Atlas 18 incher and the EGO 18 incher as well as the Greenworks Pro 18 incher which many feel are some of the best 18 inch battery operated electric Chainsaws around.
The other 2 Harbor Freight saws also quit, the 80 volt Atlas, and the Lynx 40 volt - see some other review videos. I'm leaning away from Harbor Freight, and toward Ryobi 40 volt for this reason, even though the Ryobi appears to be mildly less powerful.
Thanks for the review. Would be interested to know if it continues to stop on you as you’re using it. I bought this saw today and ran in to the very same issues with the saw suddenly stopping for no apparent reason. Charging the battery again and will test again tomorrow. If issue continues, I may be returning it.
Yeah mine still does it under continuous use. I also have a second battery and does the same thing, if you go out and make a few cuts then move on and give the saw some rest here and there it does a great job , but it won’t replace a gas saw for all day firewood use.
Well it says it shuts off but I still wouldn’t trust it for long periods of storage, it does say that if your going to store the battery to fully charge it first
Is the chain a common chain?Stihl,Husqvarna, Echo or is exclusive to HF and that saw only,I would be curious to see what it would do with a semi chisel chain
The chain is pretty common, it’s 3/8 pitch LP, 55 drive links, .043. It would be nice if it was .050 as that seems more common but I’m sure they are trying to reduce drag by going to a thinner kerf. You can get Oregon chains or others from Amazon that fit, not HF exclusive.
@@WilliamsonRidge that's good to know,I'm by no means a lumber jack, but when I switched from using LPs to semi or full I felt like I had a brand new saw, they go with the LPs because they are considered safety chains, they don't cut near as fast but they tend not to kickback at all. They put them on homeowner grade saws to keep people from hurting themselves, great video btw, you seem to have a knack for this
Really, my local store has had them since March 1st I was there just a few days ago and they had a bunch of the mowers, I’d like to review them all but I have to buy them myself, so I just limited myself to what I would use most. Thank for watching!
@@WilliamsonRidge After watching your video, I found a single person who had reviewed the self-propelled variant, so that's something. Seems interesting enough.
Looks like a capable little saw. What is the power of the motor? Been using a Makita 36 volt (duc353 in Europe) for a year and a half and I love it. That one is 1200 watts.
I didn’t notice it moving, and haven’t had any problems with play or it coming loose. The chain stays tight even after running through two full batteries
@@WilliamsonRidge i've been looking at the dewalt 20v 12 inch, the ryobi 18v 12 inch or the wen, on amazon, 40v 16 inch, i prefer dewalt, i have a ton of 20v tools already, i'll be using it mainly when we go atving and to clear the occasional tree or biggish limb from the trail

Great review! I am curious about the chain oil. Is it a big mess? Is there leakage? We returned our Black and Decker 40V because the oil leaked all over our clothes and formed a puddle in our garage when stored.
So far it hasn’t been leaking but I have two other saws that do, HF does say that when storing to empty the oil because it can leak, it is common for any saw to leak but some do and some don’t for some reason.
If the battery gets to hot the saw will not work as you saw. After pulling battery out and letting it cool a bit saw will run again. Battery also will not charge if it's to hot. Run time on this saw sucks, I wouldn't recommend it for anything but small branches if you want to make more than just a few cuts.
Why would you have a 80 volt (40/80) volt battery in a 40 volt chain saw? Can you switch the 40 to an 80 volt output in the 40 volt chainsaw and use it with 80 volts running the chainsaw motor instead of the 40 volt ?
Don't get the atlas line. I got the leaf blower and it lasted me 20 min without using any turbo. Ya, very crappy battery life. I got the ego leaf blower next, and it got me 40 minutes of runtime and more power. I did like the atlas leaf blower, the real issue is the battery. The tool is good, battery sux. I got the 80v by the way. 80v leaf blower and battery. I hate to see how long the 40v lasts. I love the baur lign, but I am not in love with the atlas. Baur is cheap, but practical for alot of diy projects, car maintenance, around the house projects, etc. The atlas really just doesn't make sense
I have the atlas 80v string trimmer and it is great, battery lasts a long time, the chainsaws and leaf blowers just seem to draw so much power the just don’t have the runtime.

What size file do you use to sharpen chain
I don’t know what happened but your comment got shuffled around and I didn’t see until now, but if you still need to know , it takes a 5/32” file.
Does anyone know how much chain oil to put in the tank? The manual is no help.
Don’t know the ounces but it doesn’t have to have a set amount just fill it to the top or slightly below
Do you know what size nut goes on bar cover
I do not I tried to find the manual to see if it was there but couldn’t find it
End of day means by 8 PM
