FYI, there are not supposed to be any shutoff valves between the pump and the pressure switch. That can cause some serious issues if someone cuts it off when the power for the well is on. It will over-pressurize the pipe between the valve and the pump. Also, the only check valve needed is at the top of the pump. My dad was a well driller and I would help him out on service calls and drilling wells a lot.
I tend to agree, But I HAD to have one due to my well be artesian and building pressure.. I just removed the handle on the shut off valve so no one closes it but me(hopefully)
Unless your schedule 40 pvc plastic pipe has been exposed to sun light till it has become brittle there is no way your well pump will build enough pressure to burst the pipe lucky to get 80 to 100 psi. If pvc pipe is in good shape it will hold about 300psi cold water hot water around 70psi at 130 degrees.
My wife scoffs at me for multiple trips to the hardware store. Fortunately, though, I am but a mile and a half from a Lowe's and Home Depot that are right across the street from each other. And I've been so often that I direct people to the aisle they need when there is no help walking nearby.
Getting ready to do the same thing myself. Our tank is an old old galvanized tank that never had a bladder to begin with, and so we are constantly filling it up with air. Really sucks, especially in the winter.
For my first 20 years in this house, my 1.5 hp single phase 220VAC well pump had been burning the contacts of those cheap HomeDepot/Lowe's pressure switches every 5 years. I had enough of that replacement pain so I made the HD/Lowe's pressure switch merely control the coil of a DuraKool two pole mercury switch BF2-7027 with a 30A rating. No problem with relay contact burn out for 15 years now. I bought it some 10 years ago but never used it. Paid about $50 IIRC back then, but I see they now cost $400+. FJB.
Think of using a union fitting when you have an obstruction. Yes in the South Mid-Georgia and below the well tanks are mostly installed outdoors. I insulate my above ground pipes and use a heat tape for the one or two cold months. Every where else there are small well sheds with a light socket to be on during the cold days.
My bladder was also bad at a time when I really didn't have much funds. But I got it worked out.i think I paid about $400 for my tank it's a 36 gallon tank. And a friend of my help me install it. But we didn't put a check vale on it,where do you put it?
I did not. Good to know because we have a lot of it around here. I had no idea that's what it was called. I've mentioned before to Kim that it looks like fennel though.
As a well service technician we have all gotten to the switch and realized it would not screw into the tank tee! for lack of clearance. Another option is to loosen the tank tee, install the switch with your original 4" nipple then rotate the tank tee back into horizontal position. Problem solved. This is an option when you find yourself 50 miles from a store.
Loved the pizza oven video. Next on my spare time list. Your shut valve should be between the pressure tank and house. Not between well pump and tank. Currently if you shut that valve, the pump will not stop running because water pressure is not reaching the pressure switch. Also, if you get a leak in your house, you will have to bleed all the pressure from the tank before the leak stops. Takes a while to bleed down an 80 gallon tank. May GOD continue to bless you and your family. Thank you for the content.
The reason for a bladder in the tank is to stop the air from being absorbed into the water. Old well tanks had no bladder, and occasionally you had to add air to the tank. You could have gotten by for years if you didnt mind pumping additional air in. Shut off the power to the pump, open a tap somewhere, and pump in air until the tank is about half filled by volume...more or less. Then power it back up. Depending on your water you might have to do that once or twice a year, but it's cheaper than a new tank.
In the older days the pressure tank had an air siphon about half way up the tank with a check ball. Every time the pump kicked on it sucked air in the top of thr tank. It made a sucking sounds. Cip cip cip cip is what one heard. It may have been better ,no bladder to replace.
We still do it that way in the south. Then you have a couple of Schrader valves to replace every now and then as well as a float valve to regulate the amount of air in the tank. Too much/too little air both = short cycle. Bad for pumps. @@martyscharff763

The diaphragm comes off the bottom of that switch with a Phillips. Screw on the plate and reassemble. No gas to store needed. Diaphragm probably still good in old one. Good for MacGyver projects. :D
For that pressure switch, you could turn the tee counterclockwise, screw on the pressure switch so the small side is against the tank and then re-tighten the tee. I hate those tees for that very reason. I put a screw in shark bite fitting and pushed my pex into it and then made my own fittings for the relief valve, shut off valve (which I connect a pressure gage with a garden hose connector only when I need to check the pressure). Those tees are way overpriced. And I used the same pressure tank from Home Depot. Good job. Now I got to winterize mine.
Hey Hax, you said your new filtration system removes manganese. There are two forms of manganese found in drinking water. There is the manganic form and the manganous form. Does it remove both?
Hey Hax - Great work. Nice video. Next time, might I suggest, you apply pipe dope using a spatula or shovel? And the just wrap the entire copper pipe with Blue Monster...you're almost there as it is. Ok, seriously, thanks for the education. Best to Kim & the girls and Bruce. Thumbs up.
Nice video. Question, what system do you have in place to get water in the event you have no power? I saw a lockout on your breaker box, so other than the generator, do you have anything as a backup system? Thanks.
Glad you got the plumbing figured out, but you could have just backed out the tank tee a quarter turn, snug down the pressure switch and the tighten the tank tee back to where you had it.
But when the switch goes bad you have to repeat the same process with water in the tank and possibly partially corroded. It's better to do what he did and shorten it

They have this thingy... it's called a crescent wrench. Just messing. Thx for vid. You could have just turned the t 90 degrees for the pressure switch and then forward or take it off put it on and then put t back on.
I had to do this crap in a 3ft muddy crawlspace filled with cobwebs after my old pressure tank blew up and put a ft of water under our house. That was "fun" ......
Depending on how long your pump takes to build pressure with the big tank you may have to adjust the kick on pressure so you don't run your well pump so long and overwork it. Last one i did i changed it to start at 70 and end at 80. The reason for the higher pressure is 1: because I like it and 2: because the house is agonist 4 stories tall with a bathroom up top.
You are worried about over working the pump, yet you have a cut-in pressure 10 psi above standard cut off pressure and a cut-off pressure 20 psi above standard cut-off? Longer run time is no issue, short cycling and over pressure are much bigger problems.
Something I learned over the years.... whenever I'm doing plumbing or electrical or whatever kind of job...I just buy at least 2 of everything in that particular area of the hardware store...but I still have to make several trips anyway. As a plumbing and heating engineer I am most keen for people to work on as much of our systems as the can do. It both keeps demand optimal when they do good and don't need us and do had and do need us. But plumbing has it own percentage of greedy and dodgy people within. Life they say.
I'm not sure that i have seen this setup outside normally inside or under shelter i'm guessing your in a tropical environment so your pipes don't freeze your electrical switch contactors may not last long in rain and humidity . 😉
Good job up until you gotta the electrical portion of the program. No locking ring on the inlet side and the wire coming in a either UF or NM which technically is not supposed to be run in conduit. The other end the liquid taught going into the well is open to the rain fall and will duct the water into the pressur switch. Also. You had a locking ring on that end but installed it backwards. At least stick some ductseal over the end sticking up or better yet install an FS box on the well head and bring out the liquid tight with the proper fittings per NFPA70.
what are you going to do with the old tank? i've got one lying around by the well. the chicken coop's not far away. another waterer for the chickens? maybe?
Three words...Cycle Stop Valve. As long as the flow is about a gallon per minute it allows the pump to run continuously and avoid all the kicks. The valve costs less than your pressure tank too.

The kubota lol. Did well service for years and never once needed a kubota to change a tank but damn I wish I had one now lmao!
Love your videos! Um, but I think you could have just unscrewed the "T" pipe and then added pressure switch, then tightened back up. ;)
Thanks! Yeah me no think so good sometimes. 😂
I guess you didn't hear us yelling at you, then.
The diaphragm comes off the bottom of that switch with a Phillips. Screw on the plate and reassemble. No gas to store needed. Diaphragm probably still good in old one. Good for MacGyver projects. :D
You had me at the slow jams😅. Yeah, me too, at least 3 trips to the store to complete a project.
Ok now I’m going to paint my propane tank
Well done sir (pun intended) As a non-plumber but a similar diy guy such as yourself. I give you a thumbs up!
One of the rules of plumbing is that every job takes at least 3 trips to the hardware store.
That was so satisfying to watch, I know your wife loves your handiness. The British voice is cute.
Amazing Mechanical Man. 👍😀
What's the plan for the old tanks?
Not sure yet
That is why I'm a fan of union. They always make life easier.
For that pressure switch, you could turn the tee counterclockwise, screw on the pressure switch so the small side is against the tank and then re-tighten the tee.
I hate those tees for that very reason. I put a screw in shark bite fitting and pushed my pex into it and then made my own fittings for the relief valve, shut off
valve (which I connect a pressure gage with a garden hose connector only when I need to check the pressure). Those tees are way overpriced. And I used
the same pressure tank from Home Depot. Good job. Now I got to winterize mine.
Nice job Haxman!
Thanks!
Great video! We are doing our solar electric fence and here I am having to take another trip to the store. 🤦♂️ I feel your pain!
Hey Hax, you said your new filtration system removes manganese. There are two forms of manganese found in drinking water. There is the manganic form and the manganous form. Does it remove both?
I'm not really sure. I don't see specifically. They're really helpful though if you call them.
Thumbs up.
Why would you cut me so deep Chuck? That hurts my fweelings 😂
Nice video. Question, what system do you have in place to get water in the event you have no power? I saw a lockout on your breaker box, so other than the generator, do you have anything as a backup system? Thanks.
I don’t know if I need a new pressure tank or not but I’m going to go ahead and do one just because this look so easy and fun.
You should. Even if you don't have a well.
Love your vid’s man! Keep them coming!
Thanks!
I always thought it was two stones with one bird. My bad.
my old tank is sitting in the yard waiting to be turned into a fire-pit - if you made one first I could learn from your video :)
Glad you got the plumbing figured out, but you could have just backed out the tank tee a quarter turn, snug down the pressure switch and the tighten the tank tee back to where you had it.
But when the switch goes bad you have to repeat the same process with water in the tank and possibly partially corroded. It's better to do what he did and shorten it
Nice man 😂 I had to recently have our bladder tank replaced. I’m no where near a handyman type like yourself, I had someone do it but I like knowing how it was done just in case I do get on you’re level one day! 🤙
Bruce... Thats hilarious. 😂 I hope he didnt hear that 2 birds with one stone comment, lol
I wondered where he was when we finished.
Thank you for this video.
Why didn’t you just turn the tank tee to install the regulator switch?
Because I'm an idiot.
Awesome video. All pluming none of the crack!
Will you leave the tank blue?
The next video will answer that question. 😉
Yep... I need to do mine. But... I'm waiting to see if you make 1 more trip to the hardware store in the next vid... 🙂
Hey HAXMAN, any update on whether or not this was effective in reducing pump run time?
Oh yeah. It made a big difference.
Absolutely love your channel dude. Keep it up!
And I thought I was the only one with a pet black vulture. I have 2 that took up with me. I thought it was a sign my time here was ending soon but 2 years later and I'm still here. lol
😂
They have this thingy... it's called a crescent wrench. Just messing. Thx for vid. You could have just turned the t 90 degrees for the pressure switch and then forward or take it off put it on and then put t back on.
I'll know next time. 😄 My brain don't work so good sometimes when the camera is rolling.
@@HAXMAN Don't worry my brain doesn't work most the time when the camera isn't rolling.
I had to do this crap in a 3ft muddy crawlspace filled with cobwebs after my old pressure tank blew up and put a ft of water under our house. That was "fun" ......
Nice.
Great video. When did the original system get its camouflage paint job? Is the new tank getting one?
Thanks! That original spray job is from several years ago. I've got plans for new camo.
Next time I'm just going to move next door to the store...easier that way! Great job, Haxmeister! Damn good job! And two 👍👍to Miss Riley for taking on the really hard work... she'll make a fine Ruler of the country one day! ALL HAIL THE ONE TRUE RULER, MISS RILEY!!!! Take care, be safe and God bless! (And many thanks for sharing this!)
I have so many extra parts and pieces from doing that over the years. Of course I can never find them when I need them later. Thanks Jim!
I, for one, welcome our new Haxmaniac overlord.
I couldn't agree more...however, like HAXMAN my garage is full of all the extra parts. I practically have the entire lawn irrigation aisle in my garage...strangely, I never have the right part.
Where in Georgia are you? I’m in central Alabama and I have my water tank in my well house so I can heat it to keep it from freezing in the winter.
As a plumbing and heating engineer I am most keen for people to work on as much of our systems as the can do. It both keeps demand optimal when they do good and don't need us and do had and do need us. But plumbing has it own percentage of greedy and dodgy people within. Life they say.
It may cot the same, or a bit more, than paying a plumber, but it happens in your time, the way you want. And you develop the skills.
Good job
I'm not sure that i have seen this setup outside normally inside or under shelter i'm guessing your in a tropical environment so your pipes don't freeze your electrical switch contactors may not last long in rain and humidity . 😉
Yes you are correct I am a Plumber and im coming for your plums pal.
😂
Stating that you wonder something is a statement, no matter how much it feels like a question.
A period is in order.
So your saying I should have used the period Dang it! I did it again! 😄
@@HAXMAN I see what you did there?
2 can play it this game.
Love your vids! Haters if ya don't like it don't watch!
At least stick some ductseal over the end sticking up or better yet install an FS box on the well head and bring out the liquid tight with the proper fittings per NFPA70.
that goop lol - may the force be with that hose head.
what are you going to do with the old tank? i've got one lying around by the well. the chicken coop's not far away. another waterer for the chickens? maybe?
Three words...Cycle Stop Valve. As long as the flow is about a gallon per minute it allows the pump to run continuously and avoid all the kicks. The valve costs less than your pressure tank too.
Do you know what palmetto berries go for these days? 😲Pick those berries man! 😂
I've heard that. 😄
