I had a Merc 135 and did the maintenance religiously. It was great for five years and then it started just dying on me. I paid a small fortune in towing fees. I did finally subscribe to Boat US which I highly recommend even if your motor is brand new. I then purchased a Suzuki 175 4 stroke. It's been ten years and zero problems. The Merc was a six cylinder 2 stroke.
Just got back from Cabo. Owner of the guide service said he has owned them all. He said Suzuki is the most trouble free and reliable. For what its worth.
I've owned all of them over the last 30 years. I'm a huge Honda OB fan. They might not be the most powerful but they're the most reliable, super quiet and very fuel efficient. Love them!!
@@Drew-py8kg We run twin BF225's on our Harbor security boats. We hit 120hrs in 1 week. we have several sitting around 9k hrs and still running fine. We have 4 boats so 8 BF 225's and even our new ones are over 3k hrs. Something is going on if you're blowing powerheads out at 7-800hrs. You skipping maintenance?
Be nice to have a video on some of these Outboards how to clean the carburetors and reassembling. The main maintenance on an outboard motor including prop grease fittings, rebuild carburetors, air hoses things like that. Thank
Having good local service for the engine is probably MORE important than the engine itself these days. What good is a new Suzuki if service is 2 hours away?
the 2 boats I've crewed on for the past 8 yrs was a 22 proline cc with a 225 4 stroke Suzuki and now a 24 scout with a 300 Yamaha. The 06 Suzuki has over 2000 hrs on it and got that boat up to 51mph swinging a bigger prop. The 300 Yamaha is solid as well. Freshwater use. I know the quality is there just wish I could afford one.
William Christansen Yeah but who does not do that!! Like Evinrude does that to the Mercury, and the Yamaha and same goes with every thing else like cars to trucks to semis! Someone is always going to make there own look better then the competition. The only way to tell if it`s you see it with your own eye not you seeing it with someone holding a camera that works for that company.
Kyle Fitzgerald Well i knew two guys who had identical boats, one had an E-Tec and one had an OptiMax, and i tell the owner of the OptiMax was much more satisfied
I run quad outboards....Echo weed eaters with nylon prop modification pushing my 12' jon... haven't let me down yet! Plus when I ain't fishing, I got the neatest looking lawn on the block!
Certified Master Mechanic here....The answer is Yamaha. Hands down. Evinrude almost went out of business because of issues with their engines. 90% of E-tec owners I've spoken with have regretted their decision within 2 years of their purchase. take it for what it's worth.
150 2005 opti no problems except doesn't like running a half on plane overheat beeper will go on. SO idle or full on plane. Tryed differnt lighter boat same thing going to change the whole water pump this time and see what happens
Level 1 marine mechanic apprentice here and I agree. I have worked on pretty much every brand so far and Yamaha is easiest to service, and has the least problems that I have seen so far.
Yes he is true I own Yamaha 115 starts every time I’ve been running a very hard since 2013 the only problem I’ve had is the power trim Yamaha motors are amazing if you want reliability get a Yamaha
Robert Beck 90% regretted their purchase? I find that highly doubtful. Every etec owner I’ve ever spoken to was completely satisfied and spoke highly of them including someone who blew their powerhead which evinrude promptly replaced and has been flawless ever since. That’s why I bought one. 10 year non declining warranty no one else comes close to touching that. I’m beginning to think all these negative comments are hot air from people who’ve never owned one.
we really heard Nothing at all how each engine performs against another their power curve their best economy at what rev range just NOTHING AT ALL JUST SEEN FEW BOATS RUNNING NEXT TO EACH OTHER
justin tamsberg I think the difference is that Yamaha claims to have produced the first 4 stroke v6 and Suzuki claims to have the first fuel injected 4 stroke v6
Im curious - ive seen several videos on everude boat engines - they look superior to mercury and Yamaha - so my question is if they are lighter, more efficient, more powerful why arent they on more boats? I see more Yamaha and mercury the majority of big name boat makers? I will post this question on a few videos hoping for an answer- ty
The reason why the evinrude looks better is because it is a 2 stroke, 2 strokes pollute the water because they mix the gas and the oil to be exhausted into the water. Evinrudes can be heavier than 4 strokes. 4 strokes are more quieter, efficient, and they can be more power. Evinrude uses some advertising magic. So I would get a reliable Mercury or Yamaha.
They are all good motors buy what you like I have 90 ETech on mt 20' th and it will run in 12" of water with the light 2 stroke boat rated for 135hp max but i put a 4 blade and drop the pitch for hole shot so getting up on top take about 20' and when your fishing in the costal waters that are 18" deep or less in some places draft of the boat is very important
James Jenkot, at some point all the Japanese brands just kinda mesh into the same thing, I mean beck in 1989 people were saying what’s better Jonson or evenrude, I’m mean there literally the same thing basically, I mean when you have 3 outbord company’s with the same hp saying the same thing it’s easy to tell
No boat in our marina (23 ft. max) gets more than 3 mpg...and the twin engine boats only get about 1.4 mpg...That E-Tec computer module costs over $6000.00 if it should ever need replaced...Caveat Emptor!
150 hours on my 2011 75hp 4stroke mercury and all I have done is the scheduled maintenance and not a problem ,, I'm sure the other big name companies can get the same results if you just service them.when needed
I agree that engines are a lot more reliable than they used to be. And yes I would go offshore with just a single, newer model outboard. But at the end of the day, I don’t think you can really take it out of the equation. I mean, sure they are a lot less likely to break down. But they still can! Or a water pump can go bad. Or you can hit something and damage prop. A belt can break. Etc etc. so, if you go off shore a lot, I would still lean towards twins+ just for the piece of mind. IMO 🤔
I own Mercury and vary happy. I just want to say something about the Suzuki motor. If you are a shallow water fisherman.... I watched a Suzuki run thru a large mud bog....it was peeing black mud and it never ran hot. Just saying my merc will not do that.
I just like 2 cycle outboards. I've never had 4 stroke, never bigger than my current 125 HP 1999 Mercury, 757 hours. Still runs great, but I'm wanting a new engine soon. Weight is important to me. And the 115 Mercury is 363 pounds, Yamaha 377, Evinrude 390, Suzuki 401. I was surprised the Evinrude wasn't the lightest.
Love the EvinRUDE marketing... Let me tell you a little story about how a buddy of mine bought a brand new E-tec and didn't service it... Well, a bit of water got into the lower end gear case oil and froze and cracked the housing during the winter! Needless to say he needs a new bottom end, warranty you say? Nope, they did not cover it under warranty and he says dealers arnt giving him anything to trade it!! What a waste.
From what I've heard, having two engines of the same 150 horse power doesn't give you 300hp, it gives 150hp +75hp translates to 225hp by taking up half the work load of the one. That's what was mentioned concerning the same set up so I just wanted to pass this along. enjoy
I've had a lot of outboards. If I had a Yamaha I would unbolt it n watch it bubble down. They r reliable just no power. I got a 115 etec couldn't believe the power! My family is commercial fisherman with Suzuki outboards. The last motor went up at 7100 hours of everyday abuse!!! Want the best I think... get Suzuki!!!!
If you want the best outbound on your vessel. Get a Japanese motor. The Japanese have mastered the outboard,as well as inline 4’s etc...A 250 Honda,Yamaha,Zook will literally run circles around a Mercury or Johnson.
1EVILZ06 eh Look I own a DF 150 Suzuki And it really does kick ass But if I had the money I totally go for mercury It’s just something about mercury them makes them so damn nice
+PlatiumCruiser yeah just my personal experience. had nothing but problems with mine. they say no scheduled maintenence for 3 years or 300 hours I've heard more times than not including my own experience that the motors run into problems way before they should even need maintenence. evinrude also is very picky with their warranty and what they will cover. I'll stick with yamaha and keep my dependability and great customer service.
Today I towed in a boat in that has a 2 year old Yamaha. My 1983 model JOHNSON 2 CYCLE Runs like brand spanking new . go figure .new don't mean better.
There are a lot of honda's but mostly smaller out boards. 8 hp to 115. The big problem with Honda's here are price. They are right around top on performance but cost way more. When I bought an outboard I look at everything and for performance Honda was the best in power and efficiency but only by a fraction over Mercury. The Mercury was $800 less. I got the Mercury and am very happy with it but I wouldn't ever turn down A Honda that I could get for a similar price.
There is no way an e tec is more reliable and more efficient then 4 strokes. If that were true they would use 2 strokes in automotive industry, that and 2 strokes need to use oil to last. They brag about hardly using oil. Can't see it working. Sure for maybe 4 or 5 years. But try 10 years or longer. Sorry e tec fans. Not for me. You can't beat the reliability and quietness of 4 strokes.
if you know the tech that was put into the engine. they would use it in automotive! The engineering was made with the University of Wisconsin. Very efficient engine tech. Longevity? Well it has to be seen! I would put my money on it! Bombardier is a wealthy aerospace industry that has more tech then Yamaha or Suzuki
Inboards have far more maintenance costs and are much heavier setups and keep you from shallow water. Might be ok for pleasure boats but death for a fishing boat.
I find having 4 or 5 outboard engines is ridiculous. If you need or want that many engines, why not just buy a boat with a couple of Cat engines in it?
I don't get why Yamaha outboards are so popular. Lower units that last only 1000 hrs, corrosion issues, flywheel issues and some models doing grenade imitations. The Mercury engines beg the question; why would anyone want a supercharged outboard? The best outboard for boats is a 2 stroke so Etec makes more sense than any of them.
evinrude is garbage they can't take working everyday all day. Yamaha and Suzuki is the best. Yamaha use to be number one but Suzuki is now but both is the top for durability and toughness
All outboards are very very close, you cant really go wrong with any option. What just 100% sold me on Yamaha was having a 03 VMAX HPDI 200 hp 2 stroke sit for 4 years, through some hard freeze winters and very hot summers. We did almost zero weatherization. We slapped a new starter battery in it and it fired right up, she coughed once and was super smooth. Other companies may make more power or have less "maintenance" but from my experience Yamaha cannot be beat. If Mercury,Suzuki, and Evinrude want to change my mind, send me a motor to run on my boat and I will be open to a product change.
I'll take one E-Tec over any five four strokes. I don't know why Robert said what he said about Evinrude. 90% indeed. Every person I meet with an E-tec has loved it, nothing bad ever said about the engine. Don't take his word for it...do your own research.
Yeah I suppose the only downside is they are slightly noisier, but the wind and water is louder usually anyhow. My purchase was more based on the fuel economy, now proven reliability, resale (which is really starting to increase with these outboards), performance and lack of maintenance. Hands down nothing can touch these things or even come close. Weird cause you wouldn't expect this from a two stroke, but Evinrude somehow did it. Granted it was hard to go back to Evinrude after their pre-Etec DI attempt, but holy cow this thing is so much better than the Yam F300 it replaced
D Clayton Robert is right. Evinrudes are being outgunned by the new Four Strokes from Mercury and Yamaha. Let that “ETECH” system go out after warranty and you will regret buying an Evinrude. Have a friend that just dumped $1900 on his 90hp ETECH. He can’t say Evinrude without added an explicit in front of it. Buyer Beware!
Best Motor? You gotta be kidding. I'm sure Randall Tharpe thought the same thing until his E-Bomb pretty much costed him the bassmaster classic. You couldn't give me that E-tech piece of crap.
I have been very happy with Evinrude Etec

Om man jämför en Evirude Etec 75 från 2010 med en från idag.vad har hänt? Vad har blivit bättre de senaste 7-8åren?
why does the E Tec need the Oil? is it mixed with the fuel?
Coconut Ninjer yeah etecs are 2 stroke motors I believe they are direct eject so you don't have to mix it
the engine mixes the oil wit the fuel by its self
so you have to refil the oil
throw in an optimax in there would make it interesting

Levi300HD Honda isn’t on here because it isn’t big on the outboard game. They have the same reliability as Yamaha but a hell of a lot less torque
Are you serious, plz stop
Plasma fusion technology? ...guess they put an extra rotator splint on there too...you know, for mega go speed mode
Actually you're wrong sir, 2 rotator splints, the second one is behind the Fetzer valve. C'mon.
Tohatsu is the best , price reliability performance!
All the shrimpers use Tohatsu, made by Nissan I believe problem free for about five years then get new ones.
I would but I can’t buy it can’t find it anywhere

Don't care what the other Joe's say. It's all a sales pitch from each company. We know they're all good. Wasn't a review so to speak.
They need to redo this with Evinrudes G2 engine
the only thing that would do is tell people not to buy one. Just sold my boat with an etec and will never buy one again, they're junk.

Good engine

I find having 4 or 5 outboard engines is ridiculous. If you need or want that many engines, why not just buy a boat with a couple of Cat engines in it?
+Jody any big diesel engine would crank heaps of grunt
Because they take of in boat space
7 marine 627 would be great for big boats 627hp and the cooling system is closed loop so you dont run salt water thru your engine block

>gets sponsored by one brand
Yahmah seems to be best choice
Yamaha makes a great engine but I'm a 2 stroke guy and so evinrude is what I like
So there isn't a cadillac of outboard motors....
7 marine 627
I don't get why Yamaha outboards are so popular. Lower units that last only 1000 hrs, corrosion issues, flywheel issues and some models doing grenade imitations. The Mercury engines beg the question; why would anyone want a supercharged outboard? The best outboard for boats is a 2 stroke so Etec makes more sense than any of them.
Trolling for dolphin?
Why does Yamaha get to talk so much because it is not the best Mercury is.
LOL
Katelyn Lamps amen
evinrude is garbage they can't take working everyday all day. Yamaha and Suzuki is the best. Yamaha use to be number one but Suzuki is now but both is the top for durability and toughness
Hahaha! What did this guy smoke?
I like Yamaha bu when you going for twin or bigger Suzuki better because there big motors like the 300 or the 350 are much slimmer
seven marine 627 the best
D Clayton have a 135 can't keep plugs in it...
With the new G2s there is no way in hell I'm going back to four stroke. At this current time Evinrude objectively makes the best outboards
sawmaster 609 I hear you, there a little noisy but great out boards
Buyer Beware!
button #1: actually review engines button #2: just cut together some outboard commercials
FS Best Boat : *frantically hammering button #2*
RACINC MERCURY 400 R
Yamaha 4 life
They didn't give Yamaha a segment. I guess they already know their the best.
yeah they did
+David Clark * they're the best
the best motor is Evinrude etec it has more taulk and more economical
Best Motor? You gotta be kidding. I'm sure Randall Tharpe thought the same thing until his E-Bomb pretty much costed him the bassmaster classic. You couldn't give me that E-tech piece of crap.
I'm wondering what "taulk" is ?
I like Honda outboards
I'm surprised they were not included in this video,...although I'm a Yamaha fan myself!
Skinny water?? Why is it so hard to say shallow water.
Best boat is the one that owned by your buddy because you don't have to pay for oil change , insurance etc.
I'll take a SEARS OUTBOARD over any of the BIG 3 .......97.5
Percent....😎😎😎😎
Mercury is best
Do you offer any 2 stroke out boards from 50hp to 85hp
Yeah. I hear that a lot
Whahaha evindude etec doesnt smoke als they say but did you saw that part for maintance of evindude that think smokes more than mt Suzuki of 1971
