I've never jacked back a drill collar or long motor and mwd my boss (older brother) always called me a sissy from the brake if I didn't just pull them back, I've even seen derreck hands use their hands to do it but I never did it
I agree you need to put the wrap under so your rope falls off when you’re done going back in with it. When you know it’s just gonna be about three or 4 foot lower i used to jack it back halfway. When they’re breaking it out jack it back a ways. The floor hands liked it too because the collar drifted over where they were going to stab it in the floor. That’s just on the little rigs where are you lay the collars out in the Derrick
I never used my muel up there. I learned old school how to make my ropes and work my pipe bellies to my advantage. The only time a mule was available was in the standard derricks I worked.
When I started working big rigs I started seeing 8 inch 10 inch you even 14 inch Drill collars. Used Mule winch for those but I would run them back in the hole without the mule
it is easy coming out , going back in is a bit harder . Derrickman from 1979 to 86 , I drilled 1 year . when i was 19 years old , but i rather be up top or mixing mud fixing the rig .
TBH, I could have done that without needing the driller to come to a complete stop as I jacked back the collar and unlatch the elevators. The way this boy was struggling you would have thought that they were 8" collars that weigh 199lbs/ft. I was the daylight derrickman for Verna #6 & when we got to the job the morning tour derrickman had dropped a 6" drill collar and it was at the back of the derrick. He said that he looked but couldn't find a "mule". I said, "I'm the fucking mule!" I went up tied a rope to the collar and muscled it back..unless you have worked in the oilfield you really DON'T understand how much strength that takes. I tied back the collar came down and told the morning tour derrickman, "You're fired!" Then I looked at the morning tour driller and told him that I would beat his ass if he brought him back to the jobsite. ...he got the message.
Well done. 'been there. eight years... North Slope of Alaska.
Was a long time ago. No al we have is top drives
One suggestion. Put the wrap under instead of over. It jacks easier and when you untie it, the wrap falls off. No need to unwrap.

He's not an experienced derrickman.
