Why do people hate Prog? Why is there not peace in the Middle East or Ukraine? Why is there cruelty to animals? Why is there racism in the world? Don't blame prog, blame people.
People lack patience. Prog demands patience. Prog teaches that patience is a virtue. The church organs in Close to the Edge… The furious outro to 2112… The mind blowing solos in Octavarium… Good things come to those who wait.
You nailed it. I once tried to play Close To The Edge for my small group at work, about 10 people. By the time Jon's vocals came in they were totally disinterested.
I had a girlfriend that was a classical musician, she was very much into prog too. So I was coming from a rock background to prog, but that created an interesting dynamic between us. I'm not a musician myself, just to be clear about that,
The idea that punk signalled the death knell for prog is simply not born out by the facts. Just look at ticket/album sales for Genesis, Floyd,Tull, Yes etc compared to The Damned, Stanglers, Jam etc throughout 76 to 80. Figures don’t lie.
I am worried about the next 15/20 years… when the generation that grew up with prog (people born in the 50s/early 60s) will gradually disappear, will classic prog still be remembered? I am 26 and I hope so 😃
You're 26, and you love prog, so that proves that younger folks still enjoy it. There are plenty of young bands that still make vital, exciting progressive music, it simply takes a little time and effort to find them.
From my own circle of music listening friends, I’ve noticed that a large portion of the people that like Prog are musicians - or at least people who dig deeper into music than your average music listener. For those of us that have grown bored with the pop and punk basic format, Prog offers much more rewarding music for those that take the time to give it the attention it deserves.
I used to think that way, but I have branched out into so many other genres of music and I have found equally compelling listens in each of them. I'm not the average music listener. I listen to a lot of music. Thinking Prog is the only genre that offers a rewarding listen that takes time is pretty close minded.
If Taylor swift composed a prog album with prog musicians it would sell zillions of albums streams etc. I love prog music more than life itself and I have done for decades long live prog artists most influential music around Scot your my hero 🇬🇧🎶🎹🎼👍👋🤘🎶🥂
It's the same way that some people don't dig math... or Baroque, Fantasy, Surrealism, Abstractionism, Expressionism, et al. But, damn... I don't mind a little Ramones after Gentle Giant. or some Yes after the Beatles. To each his (or hers) own. Peace on earth.
I reckon long songs is one of the main obstacles that some people have with prog along with the perception that it's all like ELP's most complex pieces. Attention span is something that we prog fans have that is sadly lacking for too many people.
Yeah... But...the general public used to be into long-winded classical music, once upon a time; so, there's always *that* argument. It definitely begs the question on whether we as a society have been duped by modern commerce, into having way shorter attention spans than previously (which would be *regressive,* may I add 😜).
Badger "One Live Badger" behind you!! great album Scot!!!!! I agree with all you said, but I don't care that Prog Rock is despised, I love Prog Rock!!!! Jethro Tull, Camel, Genesis, King Crimson, ELP. Pink Floyd and Yes will be always among my favorites (along with Rolling Stones, Doors, Beatles, Who, Kinks, CCR, David Bowie, Elton John, Neil Young, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Cream, Eric Clapton, Allman Brothers Band, Bob Dylan, The Byrds, The Band etc). Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame??!! Well if Jethro Tull and Rory Gallagher haven't been inducted yet what the hell do I care!!?? Great show Scott, see you!! PS: The first book you showed "The Show That Never Ends" by David Weigel I got the impression that it wasn't favourable to prog rock. But I think it is!! Am I right??!! PS2 I like almost all of Robert Christgau's critics...almost....
Prog is for the thinking man / or woman although very rare , its complex , unusual time signatures, long suites , can be symphonic, it requires serious listening, which requires time and patience which some youngsters don't possess, and of course its for listening to not dancing, and if its on vinyl even better.
@@shanocles We are allowed a little arrogance when we’ve got Yes, Genesis, Rush, Pink Floyd, King Crimson, Jethro Tull, ELP, Kansas, Camel, Van Der Graaf Generator, Eloy, PFM, etc. We will take on any comers… DUKES UP!!!!
"Prog works on a different intellectual level" Agree 100%. Minstrel in the Gallery still to this day is calisthenics for my brain. Sorting out all the different beats and appreciating the swing in the song is so interesting. Following the change in the music in Aqualung is like traversing the natural contours of a landscape. Prog imitates nature with all its complexity and variety much more than standard music does. That's what makes it so interesting. And therapeutic.
Yes!!! And Tull covers a lot of different sonic topography!!! Static music has its place (I love Ramones) but Prog attacks a different part of the brain!!!🧠
Personally, I never hated Prog. Even when it was cool to do so during the disco, punk, new wave eras! I just started collecting all the back catalogues ,used ,of all the prog bands whose albums people were trading in during those days. That's not saying I didn't like new wave etc. Still have all those used records I bought at .50 cents to a dollar a pop. Kept them too, when vynly became uncool for a time.Personally, I think we are in the second golden age of Prog. Critics be damned .
My good friend Raccoon said he didn't like most of prog music because the songs lack a "steady" rhythm to which you can nod your head or tap your foot. xd He said that prog rock drum parts are often too busy for him to enjoy it.
Excellent video I love progressive rock from more or less 1987 where I discovered this great musical theme with groups like King Crimson Moody Blues, it's crazy out there and all the rock classics, not just Kayak, Emerson Lake and Palmer, but all of them. these great musicians our great bands, Tks the prog corner, 🎩♿🚭💥
Too many folks want simple music is the primary reason. Too many folks just music to party to(Sex Drugs and RocknRoll). Even if prog is catchy, the fact it still sounds complicated will turn off some folks. And, some folks only want to listen to what is "popular "(or whatever adjective means popular)
Hey Scot! So much music so little time! Those who don't listen to prog don't know what they're missing!! Thank God for prog, and thank Scot for The Prog Corner!!! Love and Light my friend.❤🌅☮️👑👍😎
Another great thing about prog is that it keeps everyone guessing. Take a listen to Bel-Air by The Church - not strictly prog but more like art-rock. As one commenter said on The Church's TH-cam channel, what is it? Is it pop, is it 80s psychedelia, is it indie? It's all of those things. That's what makes it so interesting to listen to.
Prog rock is NOT pretentious! It takes a lot of humility to present something to the public that is totally unique in the hopes that they will like it. Pretentious is thinking you can write the same i-iv-v-ii-i verse-chorus-bridge song better than the last guy. Pretentious is thinking you can play that same blues progression better than the last guy. There is NOTHING PRETENTIOUS about prog rock.
Some prog is very pretentious. Have you ever listened to Yes?? Or The Enid. BUT, pretention is music is often a good thing. It's an aspect of prog rock that I actually like.
I once read an article by Ian Anderson who described the downfall of Prog. He blamed the studios, pointing out that the executives had no control over the incredible musicians of the genre. The studios couldn't understand how fans were grouping these bands into a cohesive genre, and the executives had no ability to go into the studios and dictate to the bands how their albums should sound.
Great video Scot! I remember back in the day (late 70s and 80s), Robert Hilburn was the big music critic for the LA Times and he wrote some scathing reviews of Yes and Jethro Tull. I saw Jethro Tull around that time and at one point during the show Ian Anderson yells out “Robert Hilburn “ just to hear all the boos 🤘😃 Long live Prog!!!!
Prog sucks! (Just kidding 😂). I think most people are casual listeners. They're into the radio stuff and don't have the patience/time to listen to more "difficult" music or even discover new music at all. And that's something I don't understand tbh, but my guess is that a lot of people take "the system" too serious. Rat race and that kind of stuff. Always working. Always busy with other things. Things that don't make you happy. But that's a choice of course. Although some people possibly won't even realize they made that choice during their lives.
"Hated"? I think "misunderstood" is a better fit. I would contend that my favorite band, Emerson, Lake & Palmer is the only true "progressive" rock band of their time.
Prog the most reviled genre? No Way! In general, most people are just indifferent to it, and really don't think about it as an option. They don't listen to it, for some of the reasons you indicated, and have only a vague idea of what it is. But hate it? No. It constitutes such a small niche in the popular musical landscape these days, they just don't encounter it or care about it at all. I mean, other than Peter Gabriel (who is beyond prog) did you see ANY prog album mentioned in ANY list (in a non-prog publication or entity) for the best albums of the year last year (or any recent year)? Prog is not even in the conversation. But we know better! (BTW: most reviled genre is definitely disco).
I started off with Prog, drifted into classical and opera for a decade, then back to prog...so now I listen to both with satisfaction. Love the complexity of it all. The emotional payback is worth the effort.
Most of it doesn’t work as background music (but some does…Tangerine Dream, some of the spacier Floyd stuff…some Oldfield stuff) so it often demands your complete attention if you want to follow along. It is rewarded by more “active listening” and is therefore not of interest to more casual music fans and you can’t really dance to a lot of it because of all the time changes. 95% of the world aren’t obsessive music nerds and use music as something to enhance other activities rather than as a primary form of entertainment. The upside is that those who are into prog are usually really really into prog and music in general and even do crazy things like watch guys on TH-cam talk about it in those rare moments that they aren’t listening to it. 😂😂
1. People don’t hate Prog. They just don’t understand it, or even try. 2. Not all Prog is Rock. 3. “Prog Rock” belongs in a time capsule 1969-1974/5. That’s the image. However, Progressive Music is timeless. “The Planets” by Holst (1918) is as Progressive as you can get. “Welcome To the Pleasure Dome” was also impressively progressive. As is “The Likes of Us”. Penguin Cafe Orchestra, Jeff Wayne, Mike Oldfield, The Moody Blues, The Beatles, Rosalie Cunningham, King Crimson….just some of the stuff I listened to the last few days. Prog is insanely diverse.. Progressive music covers a lot of ground and has been going for more than 100 years! And still going strong!!
Great history lesson, Scot. Hey, check out the new Magick Brother and Mystic Sister album, Tarot Part 1. They moved from Caterbury to Space and it's awesome.
I remember talking to this random woman once at a social event. We were talking about bands and I distinctly rember her saying that she hated Yes but she didn't give a reason. I have heard other people call them weird or say things like they can't get into them and not just about Yes but prog in general. A lot of people have no imagination. You have to have an imagination to like prog.
Great video! I was heavily into prog in the mid to late 70s. I continued to buy Camel, Yes, Genesis, etc into the 80s but barely listened to it because I was so into new wave & synth bands. It was until the 90s, after the 80s music ran its course and the dreaded grunge started, that I came full circle back to prog.
Song lengths, weird time signatures, fussy arrangements, obtuse lyrics. Those are some of the reasons that turn people off from listening to prog. Most music consumers want instant gratification. Is it catchy? Can we dance to it? How about singing along around the campfire? I believe those are the parameters that your average Joe places upon what they consider to be good music. Prog is similar to classical music in that it requires active listening. Music is so disposable these days. It’s the flavour of the month and then they move on. Do young people still listen to One Direction? Not so much. Prog and classic rock in general has a lasting quality to it. It’s not unusual that a Prog fan would slap an album from 1972 onto their turntable and enjoy. I don’t think top 40 has the same enduring quality. Especially these days. 🤔
Exactly. I mean we could be wrong but I’m sceptical. Unfortunately I believe “pop” music will endure as a disposable commodity. People love McDonald’s Scot.
I could go on all day about prog rock. It got me through alot of stuff in the seventies and that core interest is what sealed the deal when i joined Acrylic Prism and met Kevin Koerber..Thirty years and alot of music later and im still a huge fan.. We used to buy alot at head shops and National record mart and many purchases were made by the album covers or word of mouth..Cool stuff..
One of your best videos ever Scot. Your enthusiasm is continually amazing. I think that prog and metal are the two most dissed musical genres. I love prog and am not a fan of metal but I would NEVER diss it.
Estupendo embajador del prog. Mientras a unos cuantos nos guste es suficiente. A mí no me gustan muchas cosas.
The only band that comes to mind from the classic period when people are negatively critiquing would be ELP. I love 25% of their stuff, a great appreciation for another 25% but around 50% of it comes across as silly or over the top.
@@TheProgCorner Well, let me put it this way...I found a wife who is very smart and already leaned to the more interesting side of music, so when I exposed her to Prog years ago, she took to it right away. It is nice not having to go to prog concerts alone. =). We've seen loads together.
I think this can be said about any genre of music as everyone has their own opinions about every kind of music. But I get where you’re coming from as I hear a lot of folks trash on Prog and I think much of the hate is misplaced. But saying that, to me it’s not the Prog bands or the music that rubs me wrong, it’s a few of the Prog fans that get my goat! In my experience, there’s Prog fans that have this elitist attitude. In fact I’ll give you an example, When I discovered your channel I was so stoked to have found it! So much so that I did a little tribute video shouting out you and your channel! I was stunned to see comments from a Prog fans just ripping me a new one saying I had no idea what I was talking about and how I was an idiot who didn’t have a clue about Prog rock. Yeah I took a beating after releasing that video but only from a Prog fans! Kinda left a bad taste in my mouth. And that’s the vibe I get from some Prog fans! I love the genre and I rock Yes, ELP, Van Der Graf, Pink Floyd, Can, King Crimson & Soft Machine all the time! Especially dig the classic Prog Psych stuff too! But there are Prog fans out there that seem a bit pretentious. It’s too bad because it only adds fuel to the fire of Prog Hate. Anyway I’m rambling! Love the channel and love what you’re doing for the genre! Keep up the strong work! Peace ✨✌️👽✨
Any criticism of "Art" or "Progressive" rock is well deserved. The adjectives you used at the beginning are totally accurate. My favorite "Prog" song: "Art Rock Suite" on National Lampoon's Goodbye Pop album. This may have been the first incarnation of Spinal Tap. No artist or genre is above criticism!
Had a very rough week and even rougher morning. Thanks so much for your video this morning. Only 13 minutes but it did bring a smile on my face Scot. Thanks so much!
"It sounds like the record's jumping" "Are they making it up as they go along?" "It just goes on and on" Jus a few of the common statements non prog fans make about prog rock.
If someone would define 'prog' it would help? I think I'm qualified to comment 'cos I'm 'in the middle, I love some but dislike a lot! Grew up loving Beatles left field stuff, Moodies, Supertramp, then mid era Genesis (and explored them backwards). All 'melody heavy' and 'different.' Mostly left cold by self-indulgent keyboards (ELP and Yes?) overpowering any melodies. That's where I draw the line, so I say again... melodic progressive yes!, but what some describe as 'prog'... Nah!... Opinions eh?
Prog detractors confuse soulless with virtuosity. Even I can strum a guitar and howl but to do what Steve Howe, Steve Hackett, Rick Wakeman and Keith Emerson did (among others) requires the skills of the classical virtuoso. The next Beethoven or Bach aint gonna come from forgettable contemporary pop. Wow, I've just realised we prog fans are unbearably pompous. But soulless? NEVER.
It makes sense why some people would hate it, some of these reasons are why prog rock hasn't always been for me. But I have listened to some prog rock before and I like it, but I would need to deep dive to see if my liking for it gets better. I have listened to 3 Yes albums, (The Yes Album, Fragile, and Close To The Edge) 4 Pink Floyd albums, (Dark Side Of The Moon, Wish You Were Here, Animals, The Wall) a Genesis album, (Selling England By The Pound) and a Rush album. (Moving Pictures) I have heard other songs from other albums from Yes, Pink Floyd, and Genesis, but I haven't listened to more full albums than what I listed. I hope to like it better than what I have before, but I also feel like pop rock is one of the main genres that has stuck with me my whole life. Also, I have a question, do you find Yes to be alternative rock because that's what a friend of mine said.
"Whitest genre" is a crazy statement, knowing how many rappers love to sample from that genre. MF DOOM, Kanye West, and Travis Scott are notable examples.
In the RS Book 50 greatest albums of all time. The only prog album listed is Close to the Edge at #445. Peter Gabriel’s SO at #297. Not even one single Tull album. However they give Pink Floyd 4 listings. So maybe they get a soft pass on including some prog. But how can an album like Court of the Crimson King not make the list!? That changed the direction of musical inventiveness and probably started the Prog movement. But they will give Kanye West and Neil Young 6 listings each!🤷🏼
I don’t mind disingenuous critics/media hating on Prog because they are bought and paid for liars with no credibility whatsoever. They hate Prog because it’s all about the money for these puppets. They are the reason I haven’t turned on a television in over 20 years or read newspapers or magazines. It reminds me of that song Opinions by The Fixx. I could care less what the corporate media thinks. They complain about skin color because that’s what they look at not talent. They have no clue how much Jazz Fusion is Prog too! My Prog collection would not be complete without Miles Davis, Weather Report, Billy Cobham, George Duke, etc. Not really an ELP fan either but I greatly appreciate their talent and the fact they are so influential. When I was a child I hated corporate pop with a passion. I wasn’t a Prog fanatic yet. But I liked Iron Maiden, Tears for Fears, Toto, Asia, The Cure, etc which is hilarious because all these bands have some Prog in their music and were the gateway into my Progressive Rock journey. My Mom was a Classical pianist and my father was a Jazz fan so my expectations for music were extremely high. When Richard Marx came out I never wanted to turn on a radio ever again. New Kids on the Block were even worse. Rap and Hip Hop were abominations. This low point in music history was the reason I decided my friends were right and started listening to Pink Floyd and Rush. I discovered I actually loved Yes and Genesis when I started listening to what they did in the 70’s. 70’s Genesis was the cream of the crop and the greatest Prog band ever. Prog Metal emerged when Grunge was popular and I decided I didn’t care much for Grunge but Prog Metal blew my mind away. Queensryche Operation Mindcrime changed my life and Dream Theater became my favorite band in the world. Maybe some people hate Prog. But I think Fireworks by Katy Perry is the worst song in the history of mankind.
Well, some women Do Love Prog... its just most guys dont know how to connect with them. My GF loves Jethro Tull, ELP and goes on an on about how great a drummer Niel Peart is. Also my good friend and Image consultant for my upcoming music video loves King Crimson (she's worked for vogue etc... I call her The Bond Girl because she is). They are out there. One important thing, stop excommunicating prog music that women find interesting (Scott absolutely knows this). Look, being repellent to the ladies should not be part of what makes prog music, Prog. End rant, begin hope...
Part of what made ELP great was they were NOT afraid of the ladies. They brought sexy to Prog. And yeah, my wife does like Tull, Yes and Neal Morse so I can testify!!!
Most people don't want to think especially about music they use for background noise. And the age old philosophy of simply minded music for simple minded people. Progressive music is mainly enjoyed by musicians who are involved in that type of music average.people wouldn't like bands that I do like Pagans mind Circus Maximus Adagio Thy majestie Fairyland symphony x Triosphere Spheric universe experience
Prog is an acquired taste....but there's a part of me that wishes it weren't. I feel so sorry for myself that prog didn't "click" until my late teens, I would have loved Supper's Ready when I was just getting into classic rock.
I listen to what I want too, not what people want you to listen to. I've never bought a music Magazine in my life because I know I'd disagree with the tripe that's written. Punk was fun but not taken seriously, I remember in 1977 we were more interested in getting Seconds Out, instead of the crappy Clash, we weren't fooled, people like Mellors changing his name because he came from money, Punk is joke full of pretentious untalented musicians. Prog groups went on their biggest tours of all-time in the late 70's. The facts are there x
One reason is because it is largely elusive to the casual listener. I’m bored by the virtuosity of Dream Theater who lack the songwriting brilliance of Chain Letter by Todd Rundgren for example. It defies to be categorized which is why it is so precious to those who can identify it.
I think some of the distain for Prog or Progressive Rock is not simply the music itself or the construction of the music but the often terribly tacky production and mixing. Some of the production/mixing in Prog is so horrendously overblown, polished and sterile that the music is just lifeless.
That is an incredible book. And no matter what people call them, I maintain that King Gizzard are a modern day prog dinosaur 😂 In addition, even rappers like Tyler The Creator and Lil Yachty have adopted prog/psych rock sounds for their own music and turning generations of young listeners on to this great stuff!
Rush didn't get into the Hall of Fame because of Jann Wenner, they got in the Hall in spite of Jann Wenner. Rush got in because of the fans who wrote letters and started petitions to get Rush in, year after year. Famous fans, like Metallica, who spoke out publicly, "why is Rush not in the Hall of Fame?" It was our devotion to the music, our dedication to see Rush get their rightful honor, and our endless persistence that put them in the Hall. Jann Wenner was known to have said, "Rush will never get in as long as I'm alive." The fans made him eat those words.
i worked myself backwards when it came to prog... got into bands like Opeth, Meshsuggah and Mastodon in my teens and wanted to know where the inspiration came from. Jethro Tull, Rush, Genesis are in my constant rotation of music i listen to now. Cant believe i slept on it for so many years.
Sometimes I think prog gets a bad reputation not because of the music itself, but because of its fanbase. As much as I love prog, there's no denying that its fans can be quite snobbish, always pratting on about the supposed "intellectualism" of the music and talking down to and/or making stupid assumptions about those who can't get into it. Many prog fans also tend to divide all music into two categories -- "prog" and "pop" -- and judge music solely by which category they think it falls under, regardless of how often the two genres overlap.
It's funny how a lot of critics(with a few exceptions of course)back in the day actually gave good reviews of prog when it was new and exciting but when music was changing then the critics started changing their tune(no pun intended: ). 😁 So why is prog hated so much? I don't know, I guess it's a matter of most people not willing to go outside of their comfort zone. Most people seem to go with what's familiar to them. In some ways people have been brainwashed. They've become so familiar with strictly formatted music that they're bombarded with on the radio with its catchy hooks and infectious beats. That stuff is music that plays on their emotions. But prog on the other hand is a musical challenge. You have to fully engage your brain and I reckon most people aren't willing to do that. The only way to appreciate prog is to unlearn.
Christgau didn't have much good to say about Prog, but he has occasionally said some rather remarkable things, in particular about the harmonic complexity of Firth of Fifth and Battle of Epping Forest.
@@TheProgCorner I agree Scot, got his 80's record guide...it's not a question of taste, the guy's was just deaf to me...some absurd writing in that book...makes me laugh
Most of the songs are too long. And unless the arrangements are perfect, like Roundabout, Abacab, or Aqualung, they can meander a little too much. I like prog at its best, can't stand it at its worst.
People that I know that hate prog are people that hate long songs(lack patience). As soon as my friend sees that a song is longer than 6 minutes, he immediately hates that song without hearing it, because according to him, songs have no reason to be that long. I've had patience since I was little, and that's why prog rock was a lot easier for me than for many, that's why I love jazz too!
Prog is one of the most influencial genres. We have so much prog influences in the metal scene and rock scene. So many bands started as a black/death band and became more and more prog like enslaved or death and the whole djent would be nothing without prog. And please no politics here. Sometimes i need my prog save space 😅 yes we all want Peace but i am little bit like frank bornemann in that case. Maybe because i live in Hannover the birthplace of eloy
I wouldn't say that prog is the most reviled genre in all of music, but it is a polarising one, thanks to the lengthy songs, over-the-top hamminess, being too cerebral for its own good and that it possesses little of people think represents rock music.
It's great that prog has had a resurgence in recent years. I think the decline in the quality of radio friendly music allowed those who were interested to discover new music and this has led to the mainstreaming of more complex sophisticated music.
Why do people hate Prog? Why is there not peace in the Middle East or Ukraine? Why is there cruelty to animals? Why is there racism in the world? Don't blame prog, blame people.
That’s right!!!!

Weigel is a fan so he’s excused!!! And I always LOVED Christgau’s writing style. Heck, I wanted to be him!!!!
Prog is for the thinking man / or woman although very rare , its complex , unusual time signatures, long suites , can be symphonic, it requires serious listening, which requires time and patience which some youngsters don't possess, and of course its for listening to not dancing, and if its on vinyl even better.
Active listening required!!!!
I used to call it the thinking man’s music… but it sounded a bit arrogant - but it’s true! 😅
@@shanocles We are allowed a little arrogance when we’ve got Yes, Genesis, Rush, Pink Floyd, King Crimson, Jethro Tull, ELP, Kansas, Camel, Van Der Graaf Generator, Eloy, PFM, etc.

In Italy we also have a magazine dedicated to prog since 2015: PROG Italia 😃😃
Just ordered Italians prog bands albums here in Finland👍pfm,bonco..
👍👍👍
I love Italian Prog!!!! And Finland has been coming up too.
I agree!!!
Rap is more hated. Very little music, just bitching and complaining
Good point.
My good friend Raccoon said he didn't like most of prog music because the songs lack a "steady" rhythm to which you can nod your head or tap your foot. xd He said that prog rock drum parts are often too busy for him to enjoy it.
Okay. That’s actually valid.
It’s insane!!!
Yep!!!!!
I am for sex, drugs and prog.

I love The Church.
I love The Church
The Church rule!!
Yeah!!! Preach!!!
Some prog is very pretentious. Have you ever listened to Yes?? Or The Enid. BUT, pretention is music is often a good thing. It's an aspect of prog rock that I actually like.
Most mainstream music is repetitive and boring. I'd rather listen to music that's a little "out there".
Me too!!!!
Sounds about right!!!!
Yes!!!!!!
It’s hard to believe but music just isn’t that important to some people…
"Hated"? I think "misunderstood" is a better fit. I would contend that my favorite band, Emerson, Lake & Palmer is the only true "progressive" rock band of their time.
Probably but not as good for click-bait!!!!
@@TheProgCorner - Fair enough.
Because it is a kind of music destined mainly to intellectuals..
👍👍👍
Prog made me smarter.
I started off with Prog, drifted into classical and opera for a decade, then back to prog...so now I listen to both with satisfaction. Love the complexity of it all. The emotional payback is worth the effort.
@DrOz-007 Absolutely correct!!!!!
"Too many notes. Just cut a few and it'll be perfect.*
To me that line epitomizes the typical attitude towards Prog.
Crazy!!!!
I love prog rock Scot ❤❤❤❤❤.
Its great music full stop
You are correct.
Prog is just too complex for the normal brain to process.🤩
That’s it!!!

I see music in broad spectrum color. So I understand that others just hear a beat & some lyrics…
I like a lot of prog but YES no sorry. It's too much.
@@doscwolny2221 Snap. My favorite band!!!
@@doscwolny2221 So who do you like then?
Great video! I was heavily into prog in the mid to late 70s. I continued to buy Camel, Yes, Genesis, etc into the 80s but barely listened to it because I was so into new wave & synth bands. It was until the 90s, after the 80s music ran its course and the dreaded grunge started, that I came full circle back to prog.
Prog is like a warm fire on a cold winter night…
🤔
There will be exceptions to every rule but I doubt anyone will remember Sia or Lorde in 2124.
Exactly. I mean we could be wrong but I’m sceptical.
Unfortunately I believe “pop” music will endure as a disposable commodity.

The only band that comes to mind from the classic period when people are negatively critiquing would be ELP. I love 25% of their stuff, a great appreciation for another 25% but around 50% of it comes across as silly or over the top.
That’s a common criticism. Not without merit…
They just hate it, ‘cause they can’t play it!

Peace ✨✌️👽✨
Prog fans can be very elitist and condescending towards any other genre. I am guilty of that as well. But I try to keep an open mind!!!
That is FOR SURE!!! The best Prog kinda leans into the tropes with a knowing wink or two…

If someone would define 'prog' it would help? I think I'm qualified to comment 'cos I'm 'in the middle, I love some but dislike a lot! Grew up loving Beatles left field stuff, Moodies, Supertramp, then mid era Genesis (and explored them backwards). All 'melody heavy' and 'different.'
Mostly left cold by self-indulgent keyboards (ELP and Yes?) overpowering any melodies.
That's where I draw the line, so I say again... melodic progressive yes!, but what some describe as 'prog'... Nah!... Opinions eh?
👍👍👍
Prog detractors confuse soulless with virtuosity. Even I can strum a guitar and howl but to do what Steve Howe, Steve Hackett, Rick Wakeman and Keith Emerson did (among others) requires the skills of the classical virtuoso. The next Beethoven or Bach aint gonna come from forgettable contemporary pop. Wow, I've just realised we prog fans are unbearably pompous. But soulless? NEVER.
But we must keep fighting the good fight!!!!!
Yes have had quite a few different eras. Most of their albums probably don’t qualify as Alternative but records like Union or Talk just might!!!
"Whitest genre" is a crazy statement, knowing how many rappers love to sample from that genre. MF DOOM, Kanye West, and Travis Scott are notable examples.
Travis Scott and Gentle Giant!!!
Simple music for simple people...complex music for complex people. The "problem" with the prog is that makes you think
Good point. Thinking is hard work!!!
I don’t think it’s actually hate. It’s just not for everyone. Which is understandable.
It actually is.
But they will give Kanye West and Neil Young 6 listings each!🤷🏼
RS is a joke. Has been for years!!!!
Terrible song!!!! Not a Katy Perry fan!!!
I've heard people describe prog as "boring". Just shows they're not listening close enough to what's going on in the music.
Exactly!!!
It is kind of musician’s music, isn’t it?
Prog is an acquired taste....but there's a part of me that wishes it weren't.
I feel so sorry for myself that prog didn't "click" until my late teens, I would have loved Supper's Ready when I was just getting into classic rock.
Everything happens when it’s supposed to…
I listen to what I want too, not what people want you to listen to.
That’s true!!
One reason is because it is largely elusive to the casual listener. I’m bored by the virtuosity of Dream Theater who lack the songwriting brilliance of Chain Letter by Todd Rundgren for example. It defies to be categorized which is why it is so precious to those who can identify it.
👍👍👍
Smug fans who think they're above popular music and common time signatures don't do the genre any favors, I'll tell you that. Great video 👌
Snobs suck.
I think some of the distain for Prog or Progressive Rock is not simply the music itself or the construction of the music but the often terribly tacky production and mixing. Some of the production/mixing in Prog is so horrendously overblown, polished and sterile that the music is just lifeless.
There’s probably some truth to that.
That is an incredible book. And no matter what people call them, I maintain that King Gizzard are a modern day prog dinosaur 😂
In addition, even rappers like Tyler The Creator and Lil Yachty have adopted prog/psych rock sounds for their own music and turning generations of young listeners on to this great stuff!
Absolutely!!!
What a jackass!!! So glad he’s gone!!!
the first truly prog band was Herman's Hermits.
Interesting…
i worked myself backwards when it came to prog... got into bands like Opeth, Meshsuggah and Mastodon in my teens and wanted to know where the inspiration came from. Jethro Tull, Rush, Genesis are in my constant rotation of music i listen to now. Cant believe i slept on it for so many years.
Prog comes into your life when you need it most!!!
I think there may be some truth to that.
You have to surrender to the artist and the journey they wish to take you on - and most people can’t/won’t do that!!!
Practically all the hate toward prog comes from critics. I've never seen the general public show that much hostility toward it.
Not so much anymore but back in the day I encountered a lot of Prog hate at the record stores I managed!!!
It’s not soulless at all, but it does require some thought and imagination to appreciate…..so…….😂😂

An appreciation of classical music and the longer structures of symphonic pieces definitely helped me…
Prog is one of the most influencial genres. We have so much prog influences in the metal scene and rock scene. So many bands started as a black/death band and became more and more prog like enslaved or death and the whole djent would be nothing without prog.

I wouldn't say that prog is the most reviled genre in all of music, but it is a polarising one, thanks to the lengthy songs, over-the-top hamminess, being too cerebral for its own good and that it possesses little of people think represents rock music.
People enjoy mindless entertainment.
Short attention spans. The synapses just aren't sparkin' like they oughta.
Exactly right.
It's great that prog has had a resurgence in recent years. I think the decline in the quality of radio friendly music allowed those who were interested to discover new music and this has led to the mainstreaming of more complex sophisticated music.
I think you might be right!!!
I think we are throwing bands into Prog that don't deserve to be there. I have a hard time accepting TOOL as Prog.
I get that. It’s an uphill battle for me too…
It requires way more than the two regular brain cells used for regular music. That's why.
