The best thing about THE MEMORY POLICE is that it was published back in 1994, and not translated into English until 2019 or 2020. I still think of that to this day. For an author to have written this book so long ago.

I’ve listened to the 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle at least 30 times. I still don’t thoroughly understand the story, BUT I LOVE IT! The storyline is indeed confusing, but each time I listen I understand a bit more. I honestly think the MAIN reason I like it is because of the British accents! The actors were wonderful! For me, 5 out of 5 stars! ❤️😃

This exemplifies exactly why I find it hard to grapple with and 'know' people's taste. A story can have all the elements someone loves but if it's not executed well they may not end up liking it or if the characters are dull/undeveloped they may not end up liking it. Or a story sounds so up someone's alley but then there's *one* aspect that completely ruins it for them. Not to mention how timing and one's own personal development and place in life can be such an influence!

i'm not sure if there's one near to you, but for books i annotate and don't end up liking i give them to little free libraries! i just think it could be cool for some random person to pick up my annotations and "read with me" in a weird sense ha

Enjoyed this video. Great concept and comments about each book. I love how somehow you are able to describe the books you discuss in detail without giving anything away. It is really helpful for anyone who might want to read the books you discussed without feeling like they already know what to expect.

Book I think you'd like: Everyone in my Family has Killed Someone by Benjamin Stevenson.
It's kind of "Knives Out" vibes with an murder mystery that's interesting.
It's written in a way that you feel you are being told all these events after the fact and sometimes the main character kind of breaks the fourth wall.
I really enjoyed it so even if you don't someone else might see this and enjoy it! 😊

Im happy to see someone talk about Memory Police. It was one of my faves a few years ago and I still think about it. If you enjoyed 7 deaths (we drop the 1/2 in Canada too!) you may want to try the authors other book - its set on a ship!

A book I would love to recommend: The Son by Jo Nesbo
I loved the use of pov. If it had followed the main character's pov, the book would have become a straight forward revenge story. Instead it followed several random people's povs and some regulars to heighten the sense of MC's mystery for the read.

I think you’d love Inkheart by Cornelia Funke and A Quiet Kind of Thunder by Sara Barnard. I know you love middle grade and books about books, and I do as well, so that’s why I recommend Inkheart. You’ve also talked about your experience with anxiety, which I have as well, and A Quiet Kind of Thunder has an incredible depiction of it. Plus, I know you want to read more romance novels, and this one is one of my all-time favorites!

my recommendation is The Hemlock Cure by Joanne Burn, i don't know if you like historical fiction BUT it's very character driven and we just get a deep dive into each of the mc. there is also some queer characters and not much romance (like it's kind of there but it's not focused on that so i think it's fine)

The Memory Police was amazing I read The Housekeeper and The Professor by her and I really like her writing and I have two books that I think that you might like one is Burning Roses by S. L. Huang it's a Red Ridding Hood retelling and two is Never Have I Ever by Isabel Yap it's a short story collection about myths and urban legends.

If you haven’t read The Kiss of Deception by Mary E. Pearson I think you’d REALLY enjoy it. There’s political intrigue, plot twists, and while it’s marketed as a romantic fantasy, the characters never lose their own dreams or goals for the sake of love, it’s a read I plan to go back to soon but it was WONDERFUL.

Honestly, we have similar taste and I always rely on your recommendations but the thing is turns out we kinda read the same books so it's hard to find something that I've read and you didn't😅 maybe Lockwood & Co? It's fantasy, dystopia, mystery, London and ghosts. I also think For the Wolf (high fantasy Red Riding Hood retelling) and A Curse So Dark and Lonely (beauty and the beast retelling) might be good

One of my favorite books this year has been Glass by Ellen Hopkins. It was really brutal and really eye opening when it comes to meth addiction. It was just so gripping. It is the sequel to Crank and it was also brutal as well. I am about to start the last one of the trilogy Fallout tonight.

I have a recommendation!! My favorite book of all time is “The Stories of Ibis” by Hiroshi Yamamoto. I read it for a science fiction class in college and I’ve never heard anyone else talk about it but it’s just so beautiful and unique. It’s definitely got a huge focus on stories which is really illustrated in the way it is told but it’s definitely something I have always wondered if you would like. I feel like if anyone would appreciate it that I watch or know, it would be you!

I know, I recommend this book to everyone, but honestly this book and book series deserves more recognition and credit for being so dang good, but not well know. And I may have recommended this years ago😅 and so here I go!
"I am Number Four" from the Lorien Legacies Series by Pittacus Lore. The character development, and the action will leave you processing what just happened 😂 you will cry, and love, and hate a bunch of the characters but you'll also understand their POVs (especially if you read the novellas). Downside, there are like 10 books, and a ton of novellas, so I suggest starting with one, the very first, just to dip your toes a little. Fair warning, it suffers from what PJO experienced with their movies. Good books, iffy movies😅 plus, I am Number Four is my PJO ❤ plus, Jessie, this is one of the books you said you haven't read yet in the bookish games video with the guess the book with badly written description, you'll see how accurate that description is😁

ultimately, I haven't read my favorites in a long, long, long while all because I haven't had my own place in three years now... a series that I would love to read again is Hush Hush by Nastaha Preston! I love her writing and the world that she created is all dark; in a way more like a crumy dark cloudy day.
I don't want to say much more about it if anyone here has read it, I would totally recommend this series and let me know on your thoughts on the books!
I love watching your bookish content!

i'm currently reading 'if cats disappeared from the world' by genki kawamura which i'm really liking! i'd definitely recommend if you liked the memory police, because it has a similar concept to the plot but a completely different tone (more funny and light while still being a bit melancholy) and was much more focused on the main character's internal turmoil. would be curious to hear your thoughts on it!

Here's a recommendation - I would love to know what you think of Migrations by Charlotte McConaghy. I read it last year and it was an easy 5 stars. The audio version is fantastic! It was a nominee for Goodreads Best Fiction in 2020, but somehow it doesn't seem to ever come up in reviews.

I loved everything about 7 1/2 Deaths, except for the end! It felt very “here’s the moral” which I didn’t feel like the book really warranted or needed. It was sort of shoehorned in for-what felt to me-no reason. When I’ve recommended it I just told people to read the book and pretend the end didn’t happen haha.

  • @Read2escape

So how about a recommendation of books I think you'll love?
Would you PLEASE read and review the An Unbelievable Truth series by Joshua Ryan Erwin? I've never heard anyone review these books, and they're fantastic! There are currently 3 books out.
Book I- An Unbelievable Truth *Author's Edition by Joshua Ryan Erwin
Book II- A New Beginning *Author's Edition by Joshua Ryan Erwin
Book III- Elijah the Great by Joshua Ryan Erwin
It's a bit dark and gritty, definitely graphic at times. But at the same time, the story has tremendous heart, many twists and turns, relatable characters, takes you thru all the feels, and is just a great read! I hope you check them out! Happy reading!

the only thing i really didn't love with evelyn hardcastle was (*semi spoiler ahead*)
    .
    .
    .
    .
the reveal regarding the larger environment aiden was in. i go back and forth and i've decided i don't dislike the twist itself, but it's placement coming *before* the answer to the evelyn murder really takes the wind out of the sails of the mystery you've been puzzling over for most of the book.
