Sooo to sum it up the “ corporal” was an anomaly that had chose the wrong place at the wrong time that met another anomaly and that made basically a whole new anomaly
"Every soldier who slept in the same barrack as him got trenchfoot." Sir this is WW1, everyone who dared to breathe inside of a trench got trench foot.
See, what if he was somehow born from the horrors of this war itself? An anomaly caused by the sheer amount of death and suffering, it then encountered another anomaly possibly caused by something similar. Creating, him.
@@void9309 Corporal Lawrence himself is implied to be anomalous because there's no record of his existence; he just appeared in the trench one day with absolutely no paper trail, and behaved in an odd, unsettling, vaguely supernatural fashion. The black pit and the corrupting substance within is its own anomaly, able to destroy the German trench long before Lawrence fell into it and the two became one entity.
In the discussion thread for this tale on the wiki, one person theorized that the anomaly Corporal Lawrence fell into also had temporal stuff going on, and started affecting him even before he fell into it, possibly to do with 106's ability to control time within his dimension. That said, there are 3-4 super popular origin stories for 106, all utterly contradictory and incompatible, so any interpretation is more than fine.
You know, I love scp backstorys, because if you look at it at lest 5 interpretations could be canon. Before this, I just thought he was some normal dude, and over time he rotted or something, and after a while we got the creepy goopy uncle Lawrence we have.

Officially, there is no Corporal Lawrence or SCP-106. Whatever memory he may have in the minds of common men is most likely either suppressed or silenced altogether.

Okay now I get it, Corporal Laurence was an anomalous individual who carried with them a mist of a relatively minor ailment, with a weird knack of being hard to track down due to the lack of paper trails. His behavior rather peculiar behavior may also be linked to his affliction. But whatever the black sludge was reacted to his anomaly and super charged it. Making him a dangerously unstable individual who carried with them a thick fog of decay with them. Maybe not so much as enhancing Laurence’s anomaly but the entirety of his being as it seems he became a very exaggerated version of himself. Like a negative stat multiplier. I wrote this down for myself because I’ve heard and read this story before but I wasn’t able to follow along as well as I wish I could.

If you want a moment of existential fear, a weirdly scary thing to realize is that he's still aging like a person. This terrifyingly strange and deadly creature, this personification of sadistic love who revels in the fear in and eventually death of friend, for and stranger alike, is fallible to time. Once he was young, now he is old and decrepit. Literally now refered to as "The Old Man", his body shows he is as old as you'd expect, aging as naturally as anyone else. This means that in all likelihood, he will die, his anomolous body failing as naturally as any man. I know it's strange but I really do think that one of the only things scarier than 106 himself is that that even a monster like him can ultimately be made humbled by the passing of time.
@@AbyssWatcher745 I can see why, because then he's not some inevitable force of nature,. An immortal terror like 682 is scary because you can't win, but If you can't win, then why be afraid? Why do you think it makes him less scary though?
Quva Glor here’s another thought he isn’t going to die, his body would die yes, but he can still move his body rotting over time all the while the pain of his cells slowly dying consume him
The theory is either he: A nobody that illegally joined the WW 1 as a soldier because he has nothing left, maybe homeless or whatnot. Then he fell into the hole, if needed to explained the hole could be a crocodile pit (its a term) for a hole where soldier would piles bodies in it to rot together. So it might be the case of paranormal disease/bacteria. Or from everyone assumption, the corporal is actually extra dimensional being that can use dimensional ability and has decided to studying normal human in WW1, but then slide into that pit and become a whole other being.
He was either an illegal soldier who joined because people found out he was a pedophile (It's heavily implied 106 is a Pedophile, he says names of children and likes especially to take children into his dimension, attracted to children's screams of horror etc) and had nothing to lose. Or he was a German spy who sneaked into the battalion.
This is interesting knowing that when they encountered SCP-096, he was sent to a WW1-2 type dimension where SCP-096 walked around in the trenches and was tourtured by WW1-2 soldiers that had no faces or whatever crap 106 can do.
Fun fact: cpl "Lawrence" on the thumbnail is actually the picture of a man suffering from a condition called Shellshock. This Shellshock condition would arise is soldiers due to a mental breakdown from the anxiety caused by enemy mortar barrages day and night.
7:14 I just so love it that they tied that in with the actual, historical photo... Who knows, perhaps the real man suffered something like that in the real war... I always like to think that when people say “there is no canon” in SCP, it means it’s all canon. Any inconsistencies, contradictions, plot holes et cetera are proof that the Foundation is not in fact omnipotent and can be mistaken or even outright wrong.
I think when Lawrence when in that pocket dimension hole, he’s been trapped in his own maze for years before he drove him insane and they dragged him out.

Godzilla Kaiju boy Godzilla Kaiju boy i think what made WW1 special was the shock of it all. The new form of war was never experienced prior to that in such a large scale. Hell, nations were still using cavalry and line formations. Now they had to deal with rat infested trenches, machine guns that can mow down entire regiments, gas that can melt your lungs, and the first introduction of tanks. To them, this style of modern warfare was foreign. Not seen on such a large scale before. It Even created the Lost Generation. To the individuals who had to spend months at a time in a muddy, gangrenous trench, surviving constant mortar and sniper fire, only to go over into no-mans land on a suicidal charge, it was a nightmare. Where in WW2, it was more expected. It was more destructive for sure, no doubt there, but WW1 was just that. The 1st World War or The Great War then.
imagine being a soldier in a war who survived shot in neck by sniper and you then die later in battle but then some fandom uses image of you being happy for survivng shot in neck for a monster
*A* shell would be bad enough. That poor bastard may have had hundreds blow up around him in the months that he spent at the front. When you read ww1 stories the question you should ask isn't why did these soldiers go insane. You should be asking how all of them didn't.
Realistically in ww1 if a soldier in the group had no paper work he would be assumed to be a spy, this has happened before
I thought the same, they would probably try him, and sentence him to death for espionage
Maybe his anomaly prevented them from seeing this, so that they couldn't prevent him from joining with the other anomaly.
Realistically none of this is possible so who cares

That makes him less scary to me tbh
@@AbyssWatcher745 I can see why, because then he's not some inevitable force of nature,. An immortal terror like 682 is scary because you can't win, but If you can't win, then why be afraid?
Why do you think it makes him less scary though?
@@DiabloDelMer1 Uhh you literally answered your own question in the first sentence.
@@tunapriest9392 Good point, I didn't consider that.
Quva Glor here’s another thought he isn’t going to die, his body would die yes, but he can still move his body rotting over time all the while the pain of his cells slowly dying consume him
The theory is either he:
A nobody that illegally joined the WW 1 as a soldier because he has nothing left, maybe homeless or whatnot.
He showed no anomalous properties prior to falling into the hole, so I think it's the latter. It's entirely possible his paperwork was lost, though.
It wasnt canon
