German Freikorps Song - Die Grenzwacht hielt im Osten"

This song was written in 1920 by Karl Freiherr Manteuffel-Katzdangen, following the death of his Freikorps relative, Hans von Manteuffel, who died in Riga a year prior in 1919. The song tells a story about the German Freikorps who retreated from the Baltics.
The Freikorps in the Baltic were German paramilitary units formed after World War I to counter the Soviet Red Army and maintain German influence. Key units included the Eiserne Division and the Baltische Landeswehr. They initially succeeded with local support but were ordered to withdraw by the Allies after capturing Riga. They eventually retreated to Germany in July 1919.
In April of 1919, the Freikorps occupied Latvia establishing Pastor Andrievs Niedra as prime minister. During the occupation of Latvia, the Freikorps were accused of killing roughly 3625 Latvian civilians. As a result, Pastor Andrievs Niedra resisted the Freikorps occupation. The Freikorps objective switched from fighting the Red Army to maintaining German supremacy in the Baltics. Pastor Niedra with Estonian Commander-in-Chief Johan Laidoner fought off the Freikorps occupation in the Baltics.
Following the Freikorps' defeat in Limbaži and Stalbe by the Estonian army, the Freikorps began their retreat from the Baltics. During the Siege of Riga, 14000 Freikorps troops escaped to Russia. By now, the Baltic resistance had Entante naval aid and the Freikorps' goal of fighting the Red Army and establishing a German puppet in the Baltics have failed.

Very interesting song. It talks about the Baltic Germans being forcibly expelled, with heavy Freikorps resistance. However, as the song says, the Germans came back to Ostland in ‘41.
