God damn man, you said perfectly, exactly! Rolex is a toy in comparison to Glashütte. I have 6 Rolex's but when I wear them I'm not excited, but when I wear one of three Glashütte's of mine, for each one of them I feel differently. After 8 years of owning them I can't convince myself to sell them or trade them 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

What a weird one. It’s odd that it’s a diver, to me. It doesn’t look like one as such and I can’t help but think they’d have made it more appealing if they’d gone for an urban daily wearer specs, rather than diver specs. It might have been a touch smaller, thinner and more refined.

As I wrote ..got my bi clour watch last week. serial # 90. I have a 20 cm wrist or 8 inches....and even for me it felt big ( at first ) as Im used to wearing my Submariner and Daytona. After 1 week Im used to it now. To be honest, its not even close to the sub in quality. The dial is wayyy nicer ( breathtaking ) ...the movmt far superior, the lums are way easier to read at night. I will say though, that I still wear my sub more often as its more of an everyday watch. I would not dive or go to beach with this watch. Maybe if I got the non gold version Id think differently. Its a KILLER watch. But as author says, they are not in the same league. I payed 11,500 USD for it after negotiating from an AD.

I could feel your genuine excitement for that watch. I totally agree with your comments about Rolex. I also own and have owned several Rolex’s but when I realise how common they are and see the type of people wearing them the experience is diluted.
You are correct there are several watch manufactures that put Rolex to shame and the exploring new watches is the best thing about being a watch enthusiast.

A big part of the reason many would prefer a Rolex over this is because they want to brag that they have a Rolex. Those who need that ego boost are going to pick the brand that allows them to peacock. Those who care less about image and more about fine watchmaking are more likely to look into Glashütte Original.

    • @slowmigo
      @slowmigo 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Perhaps they just prefer a Rolex.

    • @arghjayem
      @arghjayem 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Hate to say it but if you’re spending 10k plus on a watch, whatever brand, there’s some element of ego in there. In this day and age there isn’t the need to spend that much on a watch even a diver.
After all a seiko diver does the exact same job as a Rolex Submariner. Sure this brand isn’t as well recognised by the average person so you may not have people pointing to it and recognising it like you would with a Rolex but there is equally an element of ego in having a similarly if not more expensive watch like the one in this video and having nobody recognise it (a sort of OMG they have no idea how much this watch cost). It’s almost a weird paradox because the reason for buying an expensive watch is to preen to some degree or as an ego boost whatever anyone says no matter if it’s a Rolex, a Panerai, an Omega or whatever.
The thing about a Rolex is, yes they are popular. Yes they retain value because they are popular and well recognised. But what most seem to have forgotten is the reason they are popular....a Rolex, be it a Sub, a sea dweller (my personal favourite particularly the 16600 or the 4000- anything but the 43/44mm deepsea types which are just ridiculously chunky) an Explorer is that they are classic pieces of design. Like an angle poise lamp or a chesterfield sofa.
Yes Rolexes are widely bought (relatively speaking) but there’s a reason for it. And just because a product is “mass produced” doesn’t mean it’s a bad design often quite the opposite. But Equally just because a product is made in small number doesn’t mean it’s a good piece of design. There are exceptions in both cases but unfortunately this watch isn’t one of them.

@@arghjayem well, if it's about price-quality, I would prefer a Tissot Seastar over a Seiko: Swiss made, own (with silicium) movement 80hrs, ceramic bezel, Saphire cristal and 30 ATM. It cost 10 times less than a Rolex Submariner. But you are right 👍🏻

Why should we as content consumers accept these claims by content creators when those same creators are continuing to choose Rolex with the own money . I have yet to see a major TH-camr actually spend their own money on a SeaQ while almost all of them own a submariner - all while proselytizing to their viewers that the SEAQ is the “superior” watch . Interesting that you didn’t review the 39.5mm version which is a viable alternative for Sub/Gmt.
People generally think that Rolex sports watches reign supreme in the mid tier luxury segment, below the likes of Nautilus, Royal Oak, and Overseas. Because of poor marketing on behalf of Swatch group that owns both Blancpain and Glashütte, only watch enthusiasts know about Blancpain Fifty Fathoms and Bathyscaphe and now Glashütte SeaQ divers. Blancpain’s Fifty Fathom and Bathyscaphe and Glashütte’s SeaQ divers give tough competition to Rolex sports watches and beat them on many aspects, brand recognition and value retention aside.
I hope you review the Blancpain two diver lines and the 40mm SeaQ diver in the future. Great video.

I'd have a Glashutte over a Blancpain any day. Blacpains's heritage is almost entirely re-imagined, there is only the merest shadow of their former self in the current company which is largely an exercise in marketing. Glashutte however is 80% of an A Lange & Sohne... for 40% of the price...

Nice watch ! I’ll remember to get one in case my wrist swells up 2 inches overnight 😁 !
Joke aside, it looks good, although I find the dial busy with these big numbers... but the diameter and thickness are the real show-stopper for me.
Thanks for presenting this model and for the quality of the vid !

Beautiful watches! While I generally like blue dials, in this case the grey and gold bi-tone projects more of a presence. Finishing of the case and movement top-notch, and I love the bracelet. I enjoy seeing watch reviews on watches beyond the Rolex/Omega/Tudor trinity.

Good explanation and caveats/parameters about the Rolex comparison. Rolex, for all the things there are to like about them, are a brand of tool watches. Their branding and marketing have been fantastic and enabled them to propel themselves much higher than their actual substance deserves (and on the uglier side, the deliberate and non-transparent supply limitations, the lack of any handmade or inhouse aspects, and the liberties they take with their claims about their products or indeed the company itself).
There's nothing wrong with wanting to buy one (I want to buy a GMT 2 myself someday), but a lot of people have been swept up by that marketing and drank a little too much of that Kool-Aid, hence the lame secondary market and loud fanboys. But it is important to have a bit more measured sense, especially when spending this kind of money. Don't buy one without exploring your options at that price range and asking yourself what you really want (do you want something expensive, or something interesting, do you want to flip a watch or do you want one to wear, what occasions do you want to wear them at, etc) before buying one just because people say (incorrectly) that it's definitely worth the purchase just because it's a Rolex.
The SeaQ is a really underrated and amazing dive watch by the way, and while I agree with the notion of going for the bracelet over the nylon and rubber strap options whenever possible, I would like to add a little caveat that you should probably choose the most expensive strap option when buying a watch, and that isn't always the metal bracelet (for e.g. genuine croc skin, etc).

    Nice watch that.
EDIT: It can be a dangerous slippery slope to move beyond Rolex, though. In my case JLC to-> Blancpain to-> Patek Philippe... Now I'm not sure anything less than F.P.Journe would feel like a new frontier. (Only half kidding...)

Of course it is not comparable to Rolex and positioned above, because it is not industrial. As you say not the same league. The comparative divers are possibly the Blancpains. And even, I think there is less refinement, less detail and the bezel needs to be improved (often a small play of a millimeter). Objectively it's the best value for money you can get, with works and components all in-house sprinkled by hand finishes. GO rules the world... but only connoisseurs know it ;)

Glashutte is a brand on the rise. Like Adrian I'm on a watch journey and every time glashutte gets mentioned it seems to be punching above expectations. It's not a hype brand (yet?) but I get the feeling Glashutte are achieving a wide respect in watch circles. If Rolex was the only watch brand you know then it's not your cuppa but if you are looking for a watch which has the respect of the horologicaly minded and you don't want to risk your FP Journe on the yacht or daily beat; this Glashutte is the pick for your watch box. ( sorry, too many words, lol)

Great review. I agree. I was actually on the hunt for a nice Sea Dweller but I came across a great deal on a LNIB, preowned SeaQ Panorama date at a great price.
I have always loved the GO Panorama dates. Now that they have that in a serious dive watch, I'm fully in! The movement is incredible! Power reserve 100 hours?! And so well decorated. Beautiful.

I’m not a Rolex fanboy but I’d take a Submariner - better proportions and looks better. The dial is just all wrong for me - numerals and indices are way too big and the date window looks way out of place. Plus the case is too big and PCL’s are a no for me. Backside and tool-less adjustable clasp are fantastic though.

LARGE Date window is amazing, best thing on this watch -- everything else on this watch you can find on other watches too, but I can tell you one thing you rarely find on any other watch in the world!!
CENTRAL SECONDS and LARGE DATE -- this is one of the few watches in the world to have these two features together (like Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Grande Date).
What I do not like too much about this watch is the minute hand -- looks a bit grotesque, like drawn by a kindergarten little kid.
SWORD HANDS on this watch would make it a market killer!

The two tone is beautiful. I love how the crystal distorts the hour numerals. At first I thought it was the actual design, but then saw when you moved the watch around that it is distortion. I think that is amazing. I agree with you about the two tone having a better look to it. It's like the BB 58 (not the new blue one) with the hour markers highlighted in gold. This adds just enough elegance to the watch without making it too flashy. I'd love to try it on in person to see how the size fits me. Maybe I'll make a visit to my local AD to see if they have one in stock yet. Last year I tried on some of the other Glasshutte watches but this one is really great.

Nobody does an oversized Date like Glashutte. Nobody. This will sound like blasphemy...While I may never be able to afford a Lange 1, I don't think I'll ever feel like I missing the boat when Glashutte's Panomatic's date is vastly superior to the Lange 1's and it is incredibly cheaper. Lange does an admirable job hiding the digits being on different planes with a crafty frame, but Glashutte absolutely nails it with the double discs on the same plane. They nail it in everyone of their watches every single damn time. As Will Smith says in Independence Day..."I have GOT to get me one of these!"

15.65 mm thick , what’s the weight on the bracelet? Probably very heavy. 43 mm in steel to big, in titanium yes , but not in steel it will be too chunky and heavy especially combined with the thickness. Would be nice to know the weight of watches , that’s an important part of the comfort on wrist. I don’t know why many watch reviewers never talk about weight, although some have caught on recently and have started mentioning the weight. And , the re sale on this will be much much worse than Rolex. You will take a massive haircut. No thanks. I’ll stick with Rolex. Shame because the looks are great, the movement looks great and the quality is excellent most probably. The y just got the size and weight wrong, too big and chunky on the bracelet , on rubber or NATO it should be fine . Polished centre links also a big no no on a dive watch . 21 mm lug width also a big no no, why do that ? Oh to force people to buy their straps, that’s why. Now I’m definitely not buying it. Nein danke, meine freunde. You can keep your overpriced hunk of polished steel.

This - and JLC - is a brand for purists and those who can afford to hose large sums of money away with little care to resale value further down the road. Rolex is for those who appreciate fine watches but who would like plenty of brand recognition out in the field and that warm feeling that they can convert their wares back to what they paid without taking too much of a haircut in the process. I had a good look at a 70s in Munich (a cool but slightly large piece) and hanker after the blue 2020 60s. Fine watches but at a price. As for offloading at a future date I’d be... nervous... shall we say.

Great watches and on my radar for almost a year now. I had it on the wrist a few weeks ago and it rocks. This SeaQ is not a competition for a Rolex sub. The finishing is way better, but you can compare this watch with a Blancpain fifty fathoms 5015 or maybe a Rolex Sea dweller. The problem with the SeaQ is the pricing. It will not hold it's value so buy the SeaQ because you want a beautiful and very good watch to keep or dont buy at retail without discount.

I love this watch, and as you said I feel they prove my biggest problem with Rolex resale prices these days.
The Submariner is a good watch; at its retail price. Unfortunately if you don't want to wait literally years to own one, you need to pay the same price as this, objectively much better watch.
If you want to compare this to the SD43, then they are reasonably comparable for the price; one is beautifully made and the other is amazing technologically. Unfortunately, once again, the street price for an SD43 pushes itself above this watch, into Fifty Fathoms territory, and then its just not worth it.

@@elizabeth_grant I'm not sure what you mean; other than a very discreet 4:30 date (much more discreet than a rolex date), the Fifty Fathoms 5015 has a nicely symmetrical design.
