      A study of all dog bite related Fatalities that occured during the ten year period 2000- 2009 were described in atleast one media account with a single breed descriptor, potentially implying that the dog was pure breed (Patronek et. al 2013) However, approximately 46% of the dogs are mixed breed ( American Veterinary Medical Association) And it seemed unlikely to the authors that pure breed dogs would be disproportionately represented among the dogs involved in these incidents. Further, in only 18% of the cases were the author's able to make valid determination of the dog involved was a member of a distinct recognized breed (Patronek et al 2013) Nevertheless unverified reports of the dog breeds involved in serious and fatal incidents have been used to develop opinions regarding percieved danger of different breeds (voith et al, 2009, Voith et al 2013)

    Have to say, this is one of the worst researched Vox videos I’ve ever seen. No diving into the statistics? No distinctions between minor bits and major injuries? Yes, raw dog bite statistics are nearly meaningless, but that doesn’t mean statistics about the injuries in general are meaningless. Yes, you have to scale the numbers based on population distribution, yes there are pitfalls in interpreting the statistics, but the whole point of an outfit like Vox is to find an expert and ask THEM about it, not just write it off casually. No mention about dogs being bred for specific purposes? There’s enough holes in this piece I could use it to strain pasta.

    Small dog bite statistics dont matter in the context of this argument because even if they are more aggressive than pitbulls (honestly they are imo), the level of harm caused by a small dog attack is almost nothing. If pitbulls represent 70% of the attacks by larger dog breeds, then that is statistically significant and we can say that, given a dog is a larger breed, pitbulls demonstrate far more violent tendencies. Hand waving away pitbull statistics by pointing out that we dont really measure small dog bite occurences doesnt work because that isnt relevant to the conversation.

    • @motomike71

      "It's not the dog, it's the owner," is a canard I hear often. The problem is that not every dog owner can be an animal behavior specialist. Many dogs will be aggressive with other dogs or anyone they perceive as a threat to their territory. While most people can restrain smaller breeds, many owners of large and strong dog breeds aren't physically capable of restraining their animal. The dog may be perfectly placid around the owner and their family, but watch out when the dog perceives a threat.

    • @sn0tkore
      @sn0tkore 29 วันที่ผ่านมา +48

      I think it's relevant because if you want to argue that a dog is aggressive due to its breeding then showing that small dogs, that aren't bred for aggression, are in fact aggressive means that it might not be breed related. If you ban dogs because of their potential harm, then all large dogs should be banned.

    • @johngoodman5094
      @johngoodman5094 29 วันที่ผ่านมา +65

      It's not because of "potential harm" it's because of decades of correlated statistics that show the breed umbrella that includes PB, Staffy, Boxer etc.. is vastly overrepresented in the severe injury, maiming and death numbers when talking about dog attacks.
      There are more Golden's, Labs etc.. than bully breeds but they don't cause any significant amount of fatal attacks. Bully's do.

      in my opinion they even misrepresented the study from denmark: the study admits that some breeds have been shown to cause more injuries than others, even when considering that they are overrepresented in the data set. Also the "ban" meant 2 breeds became illegal to own and 11 more just needed to be muzzeled in public. when you consider that 67% of injuries are caused in private, the legislature hat no effect on these cases, but they are counted nonetheless. The study is focussed on the reports of a singular hospital as well, so no country wide data.
      all in all the data doesnt really support the conclusion of the study since they generalize from a single hospitals data to the country wide effectiveness of legislature and this is being generalized even more by vox, saying these "results" would be comparable to different legislature in a different country (actual ban of all pit bull related breeds)

Also, just because a pit bull is sweet to its owner doesn't mean it won't be aggressive to "perceived" threats. The only dog I have ever been properly attacked and bit by was a Pitbull, same goes for my sister. The attack was unprovoked, we were both playing in an open field. I'm sure they can be sweet but the fact that we were both attacked as children will forever change how I perceive them. They have a prey drive that extends to humans, and that's unacceptable.

      I lived next door to a house that had a pitbull. I think they tied him up during the day, but when I got home at night and had to go up the street, which was extremely steep, he was at the entrance. He saw me and started barking and running, it was clear he wanted to attack me. The gate was short. Every time I was scared to death that he would be able to jump and break free. As the street was very steep, I always thought it would be impossible for me to get to my house before him, so I used to think about what I should protect if that happened. I lived there for a short time and that was a big reason for me to move. I knew if he managed to get out I was doomed.

Pit bulls contributed to 66% (346) of these deaths. Combined, pit bulls and rottweilers contributed to 76% of the total recorded deaths.
