Have to say, this is one of the worst researched Vox videos I’ve ever seen. No diving into the statistics? No distinctions between minor bits and major injuries? Yes, raw dog bite statistics are nearly meaningless, but that doesn’t mean statistics about the injuries in general are meaningless. Yes, you have to scale the numbers based on population distribution, yes there are pitfalls in interpreting the statistics, but the whole point of an outfit like Vox is to find an expert and ask THEM about it, not just write it off casually. No mention about dogs being bred for specific purposes? There’s enough holes in this piece I could use it to strain pasta.
they did find an expert opinion about the dog bite statistics: the american veterinary association. they said dog bite statistics are fundamentally flawed. how can you possibly then find meaning and truth in those statistics?
Small dog bite statistics dont matter in the context of this argument because even if they are more aggressive than pitbulls (honestly they are imo), the level of harm caused by a small dog attack is almost nothing. If pitbulls represent 70% of the attacks by larger dog breeds, then that is statistically significant and we can say that, given a dog is a larger breed, pitbulls demonstrate far more violent tendencies. Hand waving away pitbull statistics by pointing out that we dont really measure small dog bite occurences doesnt work because that isnt relevant to the conversation.
yeah if we were observing both pit bulls and rottweilers you’d see that those two breeds alone make up a the majority of bites resulting in injury i don’t know how people can look at that and think the data is actually completely wrong and that pit bulls aren’t aggressive. they are, and they deal damage with their aggression
"It's not the dog, it's the owner," is a canard I hear often. The problem is that not every dog owner can be an animal behavior specialist. Many dogs will be aggressive with other dogs or anyone they perceive as a threat to their territory. While most people can restrain smaller breeds, many owners of large and strong dog breeds aren't physically capable of restraining their animal. The dog may be perfectly placid around the owner and their family, but watch out when the dog perceives a threat.
I think it's relevant because if you want to argue that a dog is aggressive due to its breeding then showing that small dogs, that aren't bred for aggression, are in fact aggressive means that it might not be breed related. If you ban dogs because of their potential harm, then all large dogs should be banned.
It's not because of "potential harm" it's because of decades of correlated statistics that show the breed umbrella that includes PB, Staffy, Boxer etc.. is vastly overrepresented in the severe injury, maiming and death numbers when talking about dog attacks. There are more Golden's, Labs etc.. than bully breeds but they don't cause any significant amount of fatal attacks. Bully's do.
If everybody wants to know why this Vox video is poorly done, uses flawed logic and basically just said "Nuh uh" to per capita statistics, this is because this video is one big EUPHEMISM for something else..
in my opinion they even misrepresented the study from denmark: the study admits that some breeds have been shown to cause more injuries than others, even when considering that they are overrepresented in the data set. Also the "ban" meant 2 breeds became illegal to own and 11 more just needed to be muzzeled in public. when you consider that 67% of injuries are caused in private, the legislature hat no effect on these cases, but they are counted nonetheless. The study is focussed on the reports of a singular hospital as well, so no country wide data. all in all the data doesnt really support the conclusion of the study since they generalize from a single hospitals data to the country wide effectiveness of legislature and this is being generalized even more by vox, saying these "results" would be comparable to different legislature in a different country (actual ban of all pit bull related breeds)

There are statistics, perhaps not in the US. The UK had 10 deadly dog attacks in 2022, six of them involved an American Bully XL (a pitbull type of dog, bred to be bigger than your standard one) while making 6% of the dogs population in the UK (in europe we need to register our dogs). Most if not all dogs are docile if given a safe environment, food and shelter, unconditional love, like any other human being. If not, this is what you end up with. They can snap and attack anyone they deem a threat. It’s their defensive nature.
The actions of humans got them that reputation. Pit bulls are the most abused breed of dog in the world, and the temperament scores of pit bulls tell us that they are not inherently more aggressive than other breeds.

As a dog trainer, I agree APBT's (and their mixes) are uniquely dangerous. But a dog in distress, or a dog with a high level of energy, will also wag its tail even when in pain. As the street was very steep, I always thought it would be impossible for me to get to my house before him, so I used to think about what I should protect if that happened. I lived there for a short time and that was a big reason for me to move. I knew if he managed to get out I was doomed.

Hand waving away pitbull statistics by pointing out that we dont really measure small dog bite occurences doesnt work because that isnt relevant to the conversation.
yeah if we were observing both pit bulls and rottweilers you’d see that those two breeds alone make up a the majority of bites resulting in injury
i don’t know how people can look at that and think the data is actually completely wrong and that pit bulls aren’t aggressive. they are, and they deal damage with their aggression
I slightly disagree, I'd say it's relavent. It's important to decide whether the pit bull is a dog that when it does attack, its too severe.
Bully's do.

The study is focussed on the reports of a singular hospital as well, so no country wide data.

@@AlexGonzalez-ye9pc And half the pitbulls I've met lounged at any other small dog they saw and even people. What's your point?
not once did they mention dogfighting in the history section of the video
Totally irrelevant detail. It's not like THE ACTUAL NAME OF THE BREED IS AN ALLUSION TO PIT FIGHTS right?
Or the 150 years of selective breeding for aggression
Now they'll try to paint everything as "racist cultural myths cimented by the movies" when in reality pitbulls indeed are responsible for the majority of dog attack deaths despite being less than 10% of domestic dog population.
Dogs aren't people, we can't attribute social inequality and societal failures for the aggression in these animals, they just _are_ different from other dogs. Their breed is literally classified as "fight dogs", they were specifically bred over centuries to be used in dogfighting. Artificially bred to be as aggressive, deadly, and resistent as possible.
What will woke capitalism try to sell us next, that tigers are actually cuddly kitty cats and if you think otherwise you're a racist influenced by white supremacy in pop culture?
I literally know myltiple people that were mauled pr their children were mauled by pitbulls, 2 of whom are now dead and 0 people who have been involved in a shark attack so Im gonna hard disagree with you on this tale Vox.
Let's get real. Pits and other famously aggressive dogs account for like 15% of pets in America but nearly 90% of the dog related deaths. That's the problem. Denying that is foolish
despite being 15% of the population....they over half the violent toddler eating.
But they asserted that BSL against pitbulls is racist, so I guess that's the debate
This is an ignorant statement. It is ultimately the owner and/or humans who are responsible for dog related deaths. Chiwawas and other smaller dogs are known for being mean and nip at people all the time. Personally, I've never ran into a mean pit bull, they were always sweethearts.
@@GattlingCombo Read my comment again. You completely missed my point. Completely.
@@GattlingCombo a chihuahua nipping you will not cause irreversible damage like a pitbull.
Wow you guys are really ignoring all the vicious attack pitbulls do 😒
Wow, Vox completely missed the mark.
It's not about the number of bites, it's about the damage caused.
The risk doesn't lie in these dogs' temperament, but rather in their strength.
I hope you guys review your take on this.
The line everyone seems to be ignoring is "there's no evidence that pit bulls are inherently dangerous". I knew someone attacked pretty badly by a husky. I'm not prejudice against that breed. The point of this video was to soften the negative perception of the breed. Clearly any huge damage done the dog should be dealt with. I think what Vox missed was the dog owner needs to be more responsible. If you have a dog that you know bites, you need to do something about it before an incident happens
Imagine being so disingenuous that you compare a Pitbull attack with a Chihuahua 🤦
@@Paragon-su8jtPitbulls have been more prevalent in violent attacks than any other breeds. Especially toward small children
@@Paragon-su8jt when huskies account for over 66% of all human fatalities, then it would make sense for you to be wary of the breed. People don’t just pick on pit bulls for no reason.
@@Paragon-su8jt what clearly happened is that someone noticed lots of severe incidents involving pitbulls. That was because they were everywhere, many of which were poorly trained. Someone mistook it for "this breed is inherently dangerous, there are more bites by them than by Labradors".

Yup; there is a lot of saying "statistics about biting breeds don't matter when it is difficult to pin down breed" but then they claim that pitbulls are one of the most popular breeds; if they can identify a pitbull to determine its popularity then they can identify them for bites.
@@kathrynchristiansen It's goalpost shifting. "Ackchyually there is no 'pitbull'." "Sweet pibbles was just scared and that's why he mauled that cat/maltese/infant"

Pretty flimsy video tbh. As others have noted, whether small dogs bite as much or more commonly than pit bulls is not relevant. The severity + the frequency is what matters. Hence why you don't see calls to ban golden retrievers or labs or other dogs that are equivalent in size to pit bulls. Also, just because a pit bull is sweet to its owner doesn't mean it won't be aggressive to "perceived" threats. Tired of hearing pitbull owners tell us how sweet their pitty is and then you try and pet it and it snaps at your hand lol.
You can’t apply human identity politics to dogs. 😢
I knew this was going to be a great piece of journalism when they found a way to conflate pit bulls with racism.

Pitbulls are illegal in my country. For a reason.
In many countries they are not illegal, but pitbulls cannot stay outside.
Pitbulls are banned in nearly 40 countries and it’s all just a big coincidence. 🤷♂️
Dogs breeds are the perfect experiment of how behaviors are genetically influenced so yeah, a dog bred to be aggressive will be, to no-one's surprise, aggressive in general
That is the very crux of what pit-bull defenders believe. It's a philosophy about life itself, the idea that you are purely societally influenced, genetics don't play a role in behaviour, or at least negative behaviour. The hypocrisy is so frustrating. You'll have pitbull defenders boast about how different breeds have different positive qualities, but when it comes to negative - it doesn't exist and could never.
and also how genes and culture interact (gene-culture coevolution)
@@normietwiceremoved Amennnnnnn!
@@normietwiceremoved This is the thing that gets me. You can't say "border collies are more loyal than other dogs" and say "pitbulls aren't more aggressive" and be internally consistent.

Something feels... off about the tone of this narration.
They might not have higher danger of biting someone, but when they DO, they cause more damage, that's why they should be a controlled breed. If you compare to sharks like she did, you get bit a lot by fish in rivers and the sea, no one cares, but with a shark, a bite is a bite.

Generally, I find Vox videos to be well thought-out. This is not one of those videos.
Agreed
The only dog I have ever been properly attacked and bit by was a Pitbull, same goes for my sister. The attack was unprovoked, we were both playing in an open field. I'm sure they can be sweet but the fact that we were both attacked as children will forever change how I perceive them. They have a prey drive that extends to humans, and that's unacceptable.
A pitbull recently ran up and bit my stepmom on the leg. It just happened out of nowhere while she was on a walk in her neighborhood.
I lived next door to a house that had a pitbull. I think they tied him up during the day, but when I got home at night and had to go up the street, which was extremely steep, he was at the entrance. He saw me and started barking and running, it was clear he wanted to attack me. The gate was short. Every time I was scared to death that he would be able to jump and break free. As the street was very steep, I always thought it would be impossible for me to get to my house before him, so I used to think about what I should protect if that happened. I lived there for a short time and that was a big reason for me to move. I knew if he managed to get out I was doomed.
Their prey drive is TERRIFYING! When they decide to go for it, nothing short of un-aliving can stop them. That is why people are afraid
I got bit by a lab retriever while walking back to my car, absolutely terrifying bc he was twice my size
And the plural of anecdote is not data.
The amount of misinformation in this video is stunning. Not up to my usual expectations for Vox videos.
Vox has been backsliding on journalistic integrity for a few years now. The enshitification of news media has been tragic to say the least
I am reporting this video as Misinformation

misinformation that could result in serious harm or fatality
Exactly. It dodges pit bull fatalities by talking about overall bite statistics. There is no comparison. In the 15-year period of 2005 through 2019, canines killed 521 Americans. Pit bulls contributed to 66% (346) of these deaths. Combined, pit bulls and rottweilers contributed to 76% of the total recorded deaths.
How is it misinformation though?
I'm pretty sure TH-cam simply ignores that complaint or even PROMOTES videos that get enough complaints because it proves engagement. TH-cam only want's ad revenue.
This is "journalism"? Where was a single interview for the opposition against Pit Bulls? This reeks of a colleague (perhaps that "friend of Vox) using their position to get a story out.
