    8:00 Quick correction on your Amtrak mention, the Surfliner ends at San Luis Obispo, so if you want to take the train to San Francisco/Bay Area you'll have to change trains in LA to the Coast Starlight (or take an Amtrak bus from LA to Bakersfield and take the San Joaquin from there).
    Also, San Diego-LA is *always* ~$35 (maybe $37). They sell unreserved coach tickets, which means if you miss the train, you can actually use it between the same cities within a year. The downside is that coach can oversell (rare but it does happen), but it's nice to have that consistent fare. FYI, business class is usually just $20 more and you'll get a bottle of wine and snacks on board, and you have access to a basic lounge in LA. The tickets are reserved though, so you can't miss the train you're scheduled for (and prices for that do fluctuate).

    Thank you for this great video!! I am planning to visit San Diego in about 3 weeks. (3rd wk of April) and this was so comprehensive!!. I will be staying at the Navy Lodge in Coronado and I'm trying to figure out how to get to North Island using public transportation. (haven't finished watching the video yet). I will be coming from Disneyland in Anaheim (or possibly from Long Beach). But I may need to rent a car at least for a few days to go to Legoland and SeaWorld. But now based upon this video and a few of your others, I know I'm going to go on the Old Town Trolley Tour and get an all day bus pass. And I know places to go to eat!! I'd have never known to go to all these places. I really need 2 or 3 weeks in San Diego now. The last time I came to California, 23 years ago, back in 2000, I literally just passed the sign on the highway and went to Laguna Beach and Newport Beach instead. (I was visiting family in other places like Diamond Bar and West Covina and explored the LaBrea Tar Pits and places nearer to LA. There's so much to do here in San Diego, now I'm like, do I have time to go to the Zoo?
    Kudos to you on your fully information packed as well as entertaining videos. I feel so very prepared to choose what I will enjoy most and hopefully better able to choose (or at least offer guidance on) what my 21 yr old son and my 23 yr. old daughter may enjoy doing!! You do a truly phenomenal job!!

    Before retiring, I used MTS Blue Line and Rapid buses to commute to and from work every day (saved $2,000 on gas and tolls in 2019). Your point about VALIDATING YOUR PRONTO CARD before riding is important. Transit police will check your pass at random. On one trip home, my pass was checked at City College Station before boarding the trolley; again at the 12th and Imperial Transit Center; and again at Barrio Logan Station. I've also had it checked on a bus. You definitely don't want to get a citation for trying to cheat the system.

    • @prettymsdance
      @prettymsdance 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      This is confusing for me. I live in Sacramento, so we just have one daily pass, not a reloadable card. You can get a reloadable card, but it’s not required. We also have the Zip Pass app that you can buy mobile tickets on. I have family in San Diego and have visited for years, but I’ve always taken my car. I’m thinking about moving there and using transportation a lot. So there’s no option to buy a daily pass on the Pronto App? Also, let’s say I get the physical $2 card and load the $6 on. Even if I take 2 rides that each take $2.50 off, what happens for my third ride? I won’t get a citation because I loaded $6 on there? I just want to make sure I get this right. My family in San Diego hasn’t tried the transit there yet so they’re not sure how it works. Thanks for any help!
      P.S. In Sacramento, on the phone and on the physical card, each pass shows an expiration date and time. So for the daily pass, it shows you can use it until the next morning and that’s how bus drivers and fare-checkers on the light-rail (train) know if you’re cheating the system or not.

    • @1958zed
      @1958zed 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@prettymsdance Hi. Yes, it can be confusing.
      I just checked my Pronto app on my phone, and it only allows you to purchase a monthly pass, not a day pass. But, honestly, their "Best Fare" pricing eliminated the need for either a day or monthly pass.
      The "Best Fare" pricing will stop charging you once you hit the day pass dollar value or the month pass dollar value, no matter how many times you ride after that.
      So in your example, if you're only taking two trips, it would be less expensive to pay for each trip ($5 total) than to load the $6 onto your app or physical card. But if you know that you're going to take more than two trips in a day, the Best Fare will automatically stop charging you once you hit the day pass value of $6. (BTW, transfers within the first 2 hours of activating your fare are free; you still have to tap the fare readers each time you board.)
      So let's say you took the trolley downtown to work at 9 a.m. ($2.50). At the end of the day, you wanted to go spend some time in Balboa Park so you take the bus ($2.50). After 3 hours of wandering around the park, you hop on the bus back downtown ($2.50) but you're hungry and have a nice leisurely dinner on the waterfront for 2.5 hours. You hop on the trolley home ($2.50).
      If you added up each individual fare on that day, it would be $10, but the "Best Fare" feature will only charge a maximum $6 for the day-the value of a day pass. The day resets at midnight.
      I use a physical Pronto Card, but the app would work the same way.
      IMHO, the best way to do this-and the way I do it-is to set up a Pronto account for either the card or the app, and set the account up for automatic reloading using your credit card on file.
      You can select the amount you want to initially preload into your account and you can select when the balance gets to a certain level, when the account is automatically reloaded.
      For me, because I use MTS pretty regularly, I loaded my account at $25. Fares are automatically deducted from that amount, and I set the account to get automatically reloaded back to $25 when my balance gets down to $5. It works wonderfully, and I never have to fiddle with loading value onto my card at kiosks. It's pretty seamless.
      You can learn more here: www.sdmts.com/rider-info/how-ride
      Hope that helps.

    I agree, if you want to see SD you got to have a car; however, if you're planning to do a specific area like Downtown or area that has expensive or limited parking, the Trolley is good to use for the day. That's how I do LA as well since traffic also sucks and the tourist trap areas are easily accesible via the LA Metro.

    • @Jaycation
      @Jaycation  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      yeah i think i just grew up driving everywhere here and got used to it rather than public transport in sd

    • @trdrav4
      @trdrav4 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@JaycationYeah, So Cal was set up for commuting. Sucks that they didn't build it around a transit infrastructure to begin with. If you stay in the suburbs (Like CV, KM or Mira Mesa), you need a car to get around. If you go into the city, the train avoids the traffic and parking expense.
      I think SD's Trolley is pretty cool though. You can go to many of the places like Little Italy and Old Town, and it is better now that the train has a stop by UCSD; SDSU students have always had it good. When I was in SD for work a few years ago, I would get a day pass and after work, would take the train after hours to go to Downtown or Santee for Phil's.

    An excellent intro to SDMTS! :) SD Trolley has come a long way since I moved to SD. Back then, there was only one line: San Ysidro-Civic Center. (Dang ... how many years have I been living in SD?!?) Overall, I like the layout of all three routes. In particular, connecting both SDSU and now UCSD to the trolley network. I have a wishlist for additional extensiots for the trolley network, but I will not get into it at the moment. Jury duty and riding trolley ...... tell me about it! :D My funniest experience with riding trolley was about 20 years ago when a man who sat across my seat started smoking. The trolley operator engaged his PA system in a matter of few seconds. (Back then, there were no transit police.) This smoker, after being on the receiving end of the over-the-PA-warnings, finally had enough and got out of the trolley. Oh, boy! Giovanni's?!? I have stopped at America Plaza a plenty of times but never got to try out any one of the nearby restaurants, except for Starbucks. But the two slices of pizza from Giovanni's featured in this video looks yummy.

    • @Jaycation
      @Jaycation  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! I figured a video like this would come in use for everyone thats in San Diego or visiting. The trolley is a good option especially for college students. Beats paying $5 plus per gallon for gas if you can't help it!

    • @Waterflux
      @Waterflux ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Jaycation Not to mention, for college students, parking is also a major pain in the ass, both in the price of parking permits and the ensuing traffic congestions. When I used to attend SDSU, I either took a bus or drove my car to the Fashion Valley Transit Center, then took trolley. Last, but not the least, having easy access to the trolley network also means students have more options when it comes to looking for places to live.
      As for driving to the Fashion Valley Transit Center, its only major drawback consists of very packed parking lots during major sporting events or major shopping days (e.g., seasonal holidays, Cyber Friday/Monday).

    I've been to Comic Con for the past 5 years (prior to pandemic) and have relied on just my car for transportation to and around the area. Parking there in July is worse than finding a hotel. I think this year I'm going to look into using the public transit, like Pronto to try and help me save SOME headache that I've had to deal with in the past. Do the rates often change during the busy holidays and events like SDCC? I'm also considering a monthly parking permit with one of the ACE locations, but unsure how that process works or how likely someone not living in the San Diego area could get one for that time. I'd love a local's advice! Great video!

    • @Jaycation
      @Jaycation  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So Trolley and Bus rates stay the same and as for parking, i linked the ace website in the description box, keep an eye out because SDCC will send out a parking email and you can reserve a pass through that. The rates vary depending on the lot but u can also gauge how far the lots are from the convention center.

I'm planning a trip for me, my wife and our 3 year old daughter and I'm trying to figure out how we're going to get around. My main points of interest will be Balboa Park, seaport village, the beach (not sure which beach yet), our hotel (also not sure which one yet), and possibly Sea World. Thanks again

  • @prettymsdance

    • @dennisc6716
      @dennisc6716 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Fares are capped at $6 per day, so in your scenario you would be charged $2.50 for the first trip. If the second trip is more than 2 hours after the first (you also get free transfers within a 2 hour window using Pronto) then you would be charged another $2.50. Then the third trip would only cost $1, and the rest of your day would be free.
