Wife and I bought a small travel trailer and wanted to cover 4 vinyl clad cushions. Watched your video 4 times to get the feel then did a test piece with heavy fabric. Turned out fantastic. Then progressed to the real fabric, which is a Sunbrella type outdoor heavy duty stuff. The back cushions came out "ok". I think I cut the fabric to short for the envelope slot or back pieces. The seat cushions turned out "A #1" !!!! I dont sew but I do measure, mark and cut. I did those parts and my wife did the actual sewing parts. Measurements were so precise, that we ended up with only about and 18 inch scrap end piece!!! Great video and great instruction. Thank you.

I know this is an old video but I have to say "thank you" this is the exact video I was needing to make a cover for the cushion I'm making for a library bench for my granddaughter! Thank you thank you so very very much!!

When covering foam, I make a muslin cover and then the fashion fabric cover. The muslin facilitates the putting on and taking off of the better fabric. No sticking to the foam, so less stressing of the fabric...and easier to remove for cleaning. I'd also advocate for a zipper, as you mentioned, on the larger size (having made a canvas slipcover for my sofa, with many zippered and piped cushions). Nice job on the transformation of your dresser/bench. :)

Thank you ! And great advice on making the muslim cover first....I'll remember that for next time :) I was just figuring things out as I did it since I had never done one before. This was my first time doing a cushion cover. I really appreciate the helpful tips !!! Happy New Year ! HUGS :)

While out deal hunting, you might want check out the pricing for foam at upholstery places, or even home improvement stores... in case you want to tackle a similar project again. (Sometimes there are remnants, odd sizes, off-cuts, returns, unclaimed custom orders, etc.) I found fabric/craft stores to be the most expensive.

that's a great idea, esp. for when you need to change the cover due to use or "accidents" Thank you.

Hi, if you have trouble putting the foam inside, just wrap the end of the foam with dry cleaners plastic bag, once you have the corners in place, pull the plastic out, it comes out easy.

This is my first time leaving any comment on any youtube! But I want you to know how great this video was on making a cushion cover. An excellent tutorial, and the nice, calm manner made it a joy to learn and follow steps and watch and re-watch. Thank you soooo much for taking the time to teach this skill in such a nice way. Making a 6 foot window cushion cover for my son and his family. Half way done, and it is looking good! Yay!

Thanks for posting this. Best video on You Tube that explains how to make these covers! With that said its alot more difficult when making covers for RV cushions when you dont use brand new squared off foam as you did. 4 hours later and I finally finished one of the four cushions I needed to do.

I've learned to leave the fabric wrong side out, and put it on that way, fold over half of the fabric over on the cushion, to where it's right side out, then fold the other half on to the cushion. Try it and see what you think! Thanks for the video! I love the envelope style as well..

  • @roadrunner123

Good instructions. I just finished a cushion which was 66 inches by16 inches by 3 inches. I found that if you wrap your foam in dacron, you get a much better result. I got this recommendation from the guy who sold me the foam in L.A. The foam there is much cheaper. I bought dense foam the size of a twin mattress for $35.

Always pre-wash and dry your fabric before you cut. Depending on the size of your fabric you could have made it all 1 piece and the only seams would have been the corners, with the ends meeting at the envelope flap, also to fill in any “gaps” you can cover your foam with batting.

You are better off oversizing your foam by about 1" in length and width each so it compresses when you put it into your cover and keeps the fabric taught. This is especially important for stretchy fabrics. If you are adding dacron wrapping, you can go less on the oversizing.

Your hands are in the way!
Close ups of the stitching and where to start & stop would've been nice. And why does everyone make the envelope opening right down the middle? Why not near one end? The way u do it leaves too much slack = loose fitting. I would also double stitch seams since it is a seat cushion & will be under stress. I would also do a corner stitch to strengthen the points. I'm gonna keep looking for another video example that teaches better.

I don't see why it would work. You just need to trace your current cushion to get the right size and shape and do the envelope style opening on the back side.
