Dealing with the pain or hardware passthrough is the reason I abandoned my threadripper based 16 drive hot swap server for a small NUC and NAS. I went the opposite of you and using portainer/docker and containers I’m thrilled. It’s not as sexy as that beast, but it just works.
Your picture could have been worse. They could have photoshopped it so a fan hole was your mouth. You could have ended up looking like Munch's 'The Scream'...
Thats awesome! They make great gear. One thought though….. the phrase “don’t put all your eggs in one basket” comes to mind. It’s not IF but WHEN will hardware fail you. Have fun with it!
They make rails that are more like a shelf that the server can sit on top of. It's kinda like two heavy duty L-brackets. I have a set for my NetApp DS2423 (or whatever its' called) and it works well enough
I think I knew in the back of my brain that these existed and I just completely forgot about them. Definitely going to look into this as I think it's my best option! :)
the fans are hooked up to a 3rd party/proprietary daughter board and not directly to the fan headers on the motherboard, so the 5 options I have in IPMI don't change the speeds of the fans. Also, Noctua hooked me up with new fans, spacers, a CPU cooler, a fan hub, and a fan speed controller, so I'm just gonna go that route ;)
@@DBTechYT Thats the way to go. I did fan speed reduction cables but get ocasional over heating on my CPU, gonna go the Noctua route, just havent gotten around to it..
Always love your content. Thanks for giving us ideas for what we can do at home. Because I need to upgrade / update a lot of my older hardware into a newer (but smaller) system.
nice this thing can litterally replace all your actual device xD you can maybe use one of those mini pc to install only home assistant, so you can stop 'lying" about using a container instant of VM xD great video, waiting for the next
@@DBTechYT No problem man, love your videos. im currenctly waiting for my Zimablade to arrive to build my first NAS =D, not as big as that but will do for me XD
Damn...That's awsome. RElly looking forward for your future project on this server and goodluck tho
Thank you so much!
Congrats david you certainly deserve this
Thank you!!! I appreciate you :)

So stoked for you and can't wait to see what all you do with it! I know you are going to have loads of fun with it all.
I have really been wanting to do hardware passthrough in OMV but could not get it to work. Would love to see a video from you on that.
I haven't touched OMV in a long time but I might look into it :)
Do they really send you this for free? Both 45drives and noctua?
I mean... in exchange for content
You can set the fan profile on Supermicro boards in the ipmi. Yours may be in silent?

Idle power consumption?
Haven't tested so I'm not 100% sure. Need to get a Kill-A-Watt so I can find out for sure.
Great to see this and verty cool to see the personalized front plate. Look forward to more like it and your continued excellent coverage.
Well done to 45drives, love the front panel with your picture 😂
Can't wait for the home assistant stuff. Congrats on that beast of a machine!
A very nice unit David !
That's what she said! LOL But, in all seriousness, thanks!!
