    This is a great explanation. I found you by mistake thinking I had a 920, I have a 960 instead, but the same applies.
    I overclock my i7 960 to 4.2ghz with an Air cooler.
    Sitting at low 50°C,
    High load test 80°C. (Stress Test)
    Stable 60°C for gaming.
    I will share my settings here for anyone having issues or still messing around in 2023.
    I7 960 3.2ghz overclock to 4.2ghz. Bequiet 4 Air Cooler.
    Bios settings:
    .PC HEALTH settings
    Smart fan controller set to (PWM)
    only if fans support it.
    .CPU Clock Ratio (20x)
    .QPI Clock Ratio (x36)
    .Uncore Clock Ratio (x16)
    .BLCK Frequency (Mhz) (200)
    .System Mem Multiplayer (8.0)
    1600 memory.
    .CPU Core Voltage:
    from (1.10625v) to (1.35000v)
    .QPi Voltage:
    from (1.175v) to (1.355v)
    .DRAM Voltage
    from (1.500v) to (1.600v)
    Stress test programs were used.
    .Geekbench 6 (stable) 40 min test
    .AIDA64 (stable) 40 min test
    .CINEBENCH (stable) 40 min test
    NOTE: if you want to hit over
    4.2 GHz up to 5.0 GHz you will need a water cooler.

    It's 2020! I'm still using my i7 920 (never overclocked, stock cooler) with GA-X58A-UD3R (rev. 2.0) motherboard. Used this computer almost daily for 10 years and still runs good, and plenty fast for me. Added a GTX 1050Ti a couple years ago, and a Samsung SSD last year. CPU and motherboard has never given me a problem though idle temps are getting high, probably time to add some fresh thermal paste.

    • @bitTorrenter
      @bitTorrenter 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have a similar setup to you. Are you sure that your GTX isn't being bottlenecked any way. That came out 2016, quite a few years after the motherboard.

    • @RiffMajestic
      @RiffMajestic 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bitTorrenter The GTX 1050ti might be slightly bottlenecked. Bottleneck calculator says maybe 7% "Graphic card and processor will work great together". I do have 18GB of DDR3-1600 RAM and I mostly play games like GTA V and Skyrim. This computer still kicks butt for what I do, and I think it's pretty amazing I've gotten 10 great years out of it and it's still going strong.

    Bought the i7 920 system with the Gigabyte ex58 ud4p motherboard and OZC 1600 ram in 2009.
    Still running great. I am going to try to overclock it maybe tomorrow or so. My i7 920 is the c0/c1 version . They say the d0 overclocks better to 4.00 ghz. What the hell, i am even going to try to get to 4.2 ghz or so. And if it blows up, i still have my i7 4670 i made in 2014 and never used.

    @Jayto91 Technically yes, but I wouldn't worry about that much unless your temps are constantly in like the 90's. The shortened life-span is marginal and most likely you will end up buying a new CPU before it actually dies on you from overclocking.

  • @LtShifty
    @LtShifty 12 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    CPU's have life spans in the decades, overclocking reduces this time by a few years...ask your self this, are you going to be using this CPU in 20 years anyway?

      @assclip 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Its not to hard im running a modest 3.8ghz in windows with nothing going (load from 0-30ish) its around 36c for me. Volts are 1.37 multi x20 bclk 190 drm 1.35, using a antech cooler the hybrid water cooler h60 or something to that affect,its been a bit iv'e forgot the model number. Each chip will react a bit different though,this is why you download a stress test to see what you got on your hands,adjust accordingly till overclock failure messages or blue screen's are not present. And yes it can be normal for that temp i myself think its a bit on the high side but nothing to panic about. Depends on cooler situation ie; the room its in,case,case fan's,type of cpu cooler used,ect.

    • @darkmatter426
      @darkmatter426 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      it depends on your " in case" environment and cpu cooler off course:)
      i've started my I7 920 with a stock cooler in a crappy case ( I did put a crazy amount of fans - where possible) my temps were identical to yours with room temps 22. I have changed a case to Zalman Z11 plus and cpu cooler Noctua NH - U12P_se1366 ( still there is an option for couple of powerfull fans:)... now the same temps around 50 are achieved when overclocked to 3.5ghz, Ram from 1866 to 1950 :)

  • @philpyung4831
    @philpyung4831 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Question: Is that CPU still alive after 5 years at 4 GHz?
    Let me guess you don't even have it anymore.
    If you did, you'd still be good. The 8350 from AMD is no better and it's considered a contemporary processor.

    • @janbordon1280
      @janbordon1280 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Philp Yung you know, if your system is stable and your chip is cold the life span is not altered alot... and anyway having the same procesor for more than 5 years is realy alot.

    • @philpyung4831
      @philpyung4831 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jan Bordon I been running my 920 stock all this time. I recently put in a Windforce 290 OC graphics card and I know my CPU is too slow. Was thinking about overclocking. But the video is just so long and I don't have the patience to sit through so much irrelevant information just to figure out the simple basics of "how difficult is it to overclock an i7 920 D0 revision"?
      I never overclocked a CPU but in some games, I'd get 20 FPS more if I had the my CPU at 4 GHz like this guy.
      Oh, and about cooling. I agree. When it comes to overclocking, all your manufacturer's stated thermal limits go out the window.

    Why over clock PC these days, other than testing or reminding yourself how to?
    I also thought you could chose between the modes you want in your power settings whilst in window; which I believe changes how your system works in terms of the ranges Hz your processor can work at and how the computer performs.
    Gratz on video we more tech vids like this.

    Bad overclock... With memory spd 1200 and uncore 2400 you will lost performance about -10%... Uncore should be as near as possible till CPU Core, otherwise your non core components will bottleneck your cpu (believe me - do tests in games with ~2500 unc clck and ~1250 ram clck, and got about -6 average fps drop in games, compared to 3588 and 1688.). My results are: 4.00 GHz at x19 multiplier, 1.3625 c.voltage, 3588 uncore clock at 1.440 QPI/VTT Voltage and RAM clock at 1688 MHz with extreme timing settings (CL 9), and RAM Voltage 1.720. Mainboard temperatures absolutely normal, and dont reaching 70 celsius. RAM type: Kingston 4gb x 4, 1333, cl 10, mainboard: GA EX58 UD5. Absolutely clear gaming without any restart/crashes for 2 years in row. With my r9 390x it is beast with this settings.

      I only recently overclocked my setup and it was similar to yours except I had a Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R mobo. I bought 12GB of Corsair Dominator GT DDR3 2000Mhz. I increased the BCLK frequency from 133MHz to 160MHz, kept the Clock Ratio at 20x and increased the memory multiplier from 8 to 12. I also just installed a Corsair H60 and it made quite a difference in the temps.

      FullmoonEffects89 Late reply. But if you don't know to enter BIOS, you don't wanna overclock your CPU buddy. That's not for you :)
