I just have to say, to anyone who didn’t get the chance to watch it the first time it released, watch it. It is by far the best piece of theatre I have seen. It was done so well!! The sets are astonishing! The music is beautiful! The puppets are breathtaking!!! Everything is done well here, and I can’t say there’s anything I could argue about that. As an obsessive Studio Ghibli fan, I can just say that the night I went there to the Barbican to watch it. It took me to another world

I wanted to go so bad the first time it was on but missed out, and was devastated, but was ecstatic to see it out again and managed to get tickets this time!! I’m so excited!!
@@zzeppelii That’s great!! I’m sure you will love it as much as I did! What also surprised me the most, was the Totoro puppet. And I can just say, it feels wrong to call it a puppet, because when I went there and saw it for the first time, he actually felt real. It was astonishing, the Cat bus was too! It’s good they didn’t spoil it in the trailers for this theatre production, because when you see it for the first time, it’s an AMAZING experience! I’m not gonna lie.. I think I have to buy another ticket to see it again this year
it's actually an overrated movie, with no plot or story direction. it was just carried by cute charater designs, and good animation.
@@karlluigi1987 That’s really not true in my opinion, the reason why this film is so special, is the way it captivates the audience, get adults to reminisce they’re childhood, and get children to become fascinated with the natured world. Hayao Miyazaki’s imagination is extraordinary, it’s the fact that the film gets people to question and wonder about the creatures. Totoro is such a peculiar creature, that lives in a mysterious forest. And the Cat bus is out of the ordinary. The point is, this film broke animation history. Hayao Miyazaki always has stood out in his work, and this is a great example. You can always expect from out of the ordinary in his films, and you never know what to expect. It’s the reality that he takes you, and the presence of life and human nature. Upon how children act, and how they deal with hardships, portraying Miyazaki’s childhood. American here, My Neighbor Totoro and Nightmare Before Christmas were my two favorite childhood movies!
Far as I know it was the only Ghibli film dubbed in english back in the 90s and Spirited Away's success led to more english dubs here.
My 5-year-old son has recently developed a love for My Neighbour totoro and I can't wait to book it as a birthday present .
It's also one of my favourite Studio Ghibli movies. So I'm really excited.
I cried to know I missed my chance to watch this, knowing it's coming back makes me so happy! I definitely can't miss this again! I'm so happy!
Just watched this today. The way they translated the film is beyond description. It’s the most magical thing I’ve ever seen on stage!

I was able to watch the anime/original in a theater just a couple months ago!! the Cinemark/Century theater in my town plays Ghibli movies once a month. There’s apparently a live action version of Spirited Away too.

Watched this twice when it was at the Barbican Just came back from Spirited Away at the Coliseum. Both my friend and I who'd seen both felt Totoro was the better adaptation. It's more magical and they really nailed the fan favourite scenes like the tree growing, the cat bus, etc. Whereas Spirited Away felt more like a faithful, by the book adaptation but the pacing was a bit off (in the first half in particular). If you only have time for one show, go for Totoro. I loved it so much I'm going a 3rd time (next year).

My only thing is I wished they had stared children in the child roles, lime imagine if Annie or matilda were played by grown women it just feels off. Othere then that one thing it looks really good :)
that would have been impossible with the demands of a stage play and the range of emotions that needed to be conveyed. I can only speak for myself but within five minutes i accepted then as children....the acting was amazing.....i mean...totoro is a giant puppet,,,you have to let yourself give into it a bit. I found the play incredibly beautiful and moving and poetic. the vocalist, Ai Ninomiya, was especially outstanding as were the women playing the girls.
why not cast children who're actually talented instead of grown women acting as children? it's uh...weird imo.

Child labor laws. Also, it's not easy to keep doing shows maybe on daily basis while maintaining the same quality as a kid. It's a tough business.

Disney has the distribution rights for Studio Ghibli films in the US and handles the English dubbing ... and look, nothing changed. Don't you guys get tired of this?
