@@Ne1vaan I'd love to see a Honda ST1300, KLR, or a Honda CRF300 Rally have a go at the coast to coast. Might not beat the harley's stock anyways, but the ST1300 has 7+ gallons (7.6), KLR while not wanting to go over 86 constantly at least has 6.1 gal stock and even with spirited riding gets 48-53mpg, and lastly the Little Champ, the CRF300 Rally, more likely to go 86mph sustained without reliability issues (cough, KLR) but only has 3.4 gal tank stock and gets ~70mpg by most, probably 60is if being forced to hit an average total speed of 86. I think from Honda the best option is either the ST1300 , or a heavily modded Goldwing where all the saddlebags/trunk space is just fuel storage. There's probably a point of diminishing returns somewhere though since 1 gallon of gas weighs ~6lbs so.. Goldwing with say 20 gallons total or the Honda ST1300 with just 7.6? lol.

Funny that it was done on a harley while the previous record was set on a bmw s1000rr. Completely opposite bikes. And lots of room for improvement, wonder if tech on newer bikes would help like radar cruise
I’d imagine something like a Yamaha FJR or one of the big Beemers that can easily cruise at 130+ when it’s clear to do so would be a better option than a big Harley. I’m sure they would get a little better fuel mileage too which could stretch the stops out a bit more. I’ve seen the K1600 Beemers and FJR’s hitting like 155mph topped out. They’re insanely fast for a big touring bike.
30 years ago I would have tried this. Back then I made it from Mobile to Houston in 5 hours on a CB900 custom just to visit a pretty young lady. A VERY pretty young lady. 500 miles and 5 stops for gas in 5 hours. When I pulled up to her house I was filthy. After a shower, dinner, and one martini, I was completely done. I was only 25, I didn't get to 'enjoy' her company until the next morning. Maybe if I had a fairing I would have been able to entertain her that night, I was just too beat. Long motorcycle rides are not for wimps, that's for sure. They are exhilarating but exhausting.
5:28 Ive found that if you are honest with people about stuff like this. Especially at a mechanics shop, that most people will be more than helpful. All to often you get that person through fast food or something thats just belligerent and in a hurry for some dumb reason, and isnt honest. They are met with the same bad attitude and then it starts a vicious cycle. If you are honest, "Hey im trying to do this record run!" or "Hey im trying to get to the birth of my son/daughter" the mechanic (or food service person) will likely light a fire under his/her ass and do their best to get you gone. At least, this is how I feel about it. Ive done it working at NTB before. Person called ahead, ordered and paid for the tire, pulled in like it was a pit stop, in and out, tire on his car and back on the highway in less than 5 mins. We all got a kick out of doing it, and it shed a little light on an otherwise normal boring ass day at the shop.

Impressive on a Harley ultra. It’s definitely not a high speed bike. I’m guessing his fuel mileage was around 27-30mpg figure he was probably doing 90-95mph for a lot of it. Once you get over 80mph on a Harley they start eating gas like hell. On a sport touring bike like a Yahmaha FJR1300 would be a better choice and could easily cut that hour, probably two off his time. Also his bike will do far more than 110mph. Mine does.
I had an fjr (2005), those things eat gas once you get to 95 to 100. I would average around 25 at that speed, even with a 6.6 gallon tank you can only really fill it up to 6, Also the saddle bags increase the drag significantly. Honestly the Harley would be better if it had an intake, exhaust, cams, and a tune. It would be way more comfortable which in turns fights the fatigue.
I have a iron 1200 and if I maintain around 70 mph then I'll get about 52-54mpg. I've done 85-90 a few times on my commute and I drop into the low 40's. With his bike he was probably getting around 30's. My last bike was a 09 concours 14 and I was constantly doing 90mph (anything less than that felt way to slow) and I got 36mpg.
A couple reference points for comparison: My 2011 Kawasaki Concours 14: 28 mpg at 120 mph gps (with windscreen full-up, bags on, and backpack on back seat) My 2002 Yamaha R1: 31 mpg at 130 mph speedo (smaller bike, no bags)
@f.f.s.d.o.a.7294 That is surprising. With the connie considering it has 100cc more than the fjr. The biggest hurdle with the sport bikes is the long distance. Not due to the bike, but the rider.
Pretty impressive on an ultra, I would love to do something like that just for fun sometime. But work calls so that's a no go, although I did do 1k mi in 2 days, 700 the first and 300 the next on a 30" big wheel bike. Motor work, long bags, nice stereo and all for just a nice cruise.
Good for you Jason! Looked at this ride before, but cooking 86 across the various states has always made me nervous crossing state lawns and did my shenanigans out west. And I know about how 9 gallon aux isn't enough at those speeds. I went with a single 15 gallon cell. If you read this, send me a note sometime and we'll invite you to a real 2K+ day rally. ;)
Motivates me to get a Busa or ZX-14R and crush that record. My biggest fear would be the fuzz. I'm not sure what options for radar detection there are for motorcycles but they're probably not very good. They wouldn't dream of chasing a bike on the roads I'm used to riding.
Jacksonville to San Diego is the shortest Atlantic to Pacific route, but it's about 500 miles shorter than a traditional Red Ball to Portofino Cannonball run.
For those that don't ride, you can't fully appreciate how difficult this run was. Riding on the interstate is the most boring riding you can do. When it's hot out, you feel like a hair dryer is blowing on you for hours on end. Longest day I've done was about 600 miles, but that was in the twisties with plenty of stops along the way. I would hate to sit on the slab for 1000 miles. That's what cars are for.
Ultimate roadtrip survival box? I just did 7,500-8,000 miles around the country in my Corrado with a 3.6 and decided to take a Caddy trailer for the spare tire/jacks/axles/oil pan and thankfully I did because I ended up needing the spare room for the snow tires and then the wheels with tires I bought before mounting them up in Seattle. I wonder if there is a car with trailer record because I was flying low on my way out to LAX
Did my own personal Iron butt from Pa to Fl in 19 hours on my 250 and I lane split the whole way down 95 was an incredible journey but this guy is a mad lad.
A Ducati Multistrada or Desert X with street tires would get far better mpg and higher top speed. I like his comfort first idea vs trying to ride a Hayabusa for 27 hours straight; you might never be able to walk upright after that.😁
If not for needing like sustained/average 86mph speed, a KLR would be perfect for this, this guy said he had 15 gallons (6+9 aux) and was getting 450miles.. that's only 30mph, that's low but not unbearable MPG for a motorcycle, especially a harley that is weighted down with 9 gallons of fuel (iirc, 1 gal of fuel weighs roughly 6 pounds). Overall, if there's a 600cc or 1liter+ motorcycle like the Honda ST1300 but maybe a little faster, I think it will be a good chance of setting and holding the Coast to Coast record for a bit. Fuelly, a crowd-sourced mileage website, shows that from 2003-2011 the ST1300 can be expected to hit 40-43mpg real world. With 7.6 gallons that'd give you 280 miles (40mpg x 7gal with the .6 being left out of equation) just on the stock tank, A KLR that has a big bore kit or maybe is engine swapped with something else, the stock engine anyways getting 53mpg in my real world testing, and the Gen 2 KLRs have an aftermarket 10 gallon fuel tank option. That gives you 498.2 (53x9.4 , I left .6 off the ST1300 calculation, figured it's only fair to leave .6 off calculation for KLR) miles between fuel stops, let's say the added 3.9 gallons of fuel drops your MPG way down to 45 (from 53) and that's still 423 miles with a near-stock fuel tank before auxillary tanks and RotoPax are even considered. Seriously, if I had the money and still had my KLR I'd honestly love to try the coast to coast thing. Just see what time the stock bike would post y'know? You'd need to change the tires out for tubeless tires which involves putting silicone putty on the inside of the rim over the spokes adjustment, and then running a inner tube/rubber band over the silicone putty/inner rim and then mounting a street tire like a Michelin hard compound tire in a Dual Sport tire size. You'd also probably want to set up a little Blue LED light somewhere near the dash just to keep your brain awake and not falling into a circadian rhythm, and then just put on a Kriega Trail 18 with the 4 Liter hydrapack installed and maybe even the Trail Pockets installed onto the backpack chest area to keep papers/documents and such right near your chest. Anyways, I'd love to see a KLR or Honda ST1x00 take on the coast to coast challenge, stock or not, it'd give the 30mpg with 15 gallons Harley a fight I think. (Shit, let's be real, a Honda CRF300 Rally can probably keep a higher speed sustained with less reliability issues than a stock KLR engine.. so y'know, 70mpg and 3.4 gallons it wouldn't be a 1 go long hauler, but it could compete with a stock KLR I think, those bikes don't like going over 80mph, and the CRF300 is able to.)

Respect Sir! Wow! 🏍️ 💨❤️🙏😎🤙
Thats awesome! I want to do the cannonball in my 71 chevy truck
As soon as you started talking, we knew you didn’t drive a crotch rocket
I wonder if a side car or a trailer like I've seen some guys pull behind a Goldwing could be incorporated with a blatter system for the fuel.
Would probably add too much drag, and it's also more stuff to go wrong.
Congratulations to Jacob!
I imagine on a highway tricked out concours you could crush the record by several hours.
Yes, huge respect!!
And he described a fair amount of how-to, but not how you can race from coast to coast without getting a single speeding ticket. 😢
This dude sounds like he should have an immaculate beard.
No, not a beard. The Legendary 'Stache (so many comparing his voice to Sam Elliott)
@@danielseelye6005 The Dude abides!
I'd completely understand the harley thing if they were geared to cruise faster. It should be chugging away at low revs at 100mph man
I live in south Mississippi and lower Bama and I'm pretty sure I've seen this guy before.
Did my own personal Iron butt from Pa to Fl in 19 hours on my 250 and I lane split the whole way down 95 was an incredible journey but this guy is a mad lad.
Kudos to you for choosing a Harley-Davidson to do it with... Don't Overthink IT!!!...😏😏
Watching this from a stop on a 1700 mile trip around the southwest. Seriously, if you want to cut that hour off the record- Do it on a K1600 GT.
A Ducati Multistrada or Desert X with street tires would get far better mpg and higher top speed.
I like his comfort first idea vs trying to ride a Hayabusa for 27 hours straight; you might never be able to walk upright after that.😁
“It’s the only bike I had so it’s the one I went on” me on a Tuesday
Just checked out that survival kit, gotta make a “keep it under 100” version of the kit that doesn’t have all the expensive land speed record stuff.
I am a iron but rider. I love it.Get out there watch the whole day go by ride listen to music, think, think some more pure freedom for motorheads
My father complained about being sore just from riding from Kissimmee to Daytona. There's no way that he'd be able to go coast to coast.
This guy is the most American sounding man I’ve ever heard
I respect what this man has done but is anyone else surprised an HD holds the record?
Keep living the dream.
With 7.6 gallons that'd give you 280 miles (40mpg x 7gal with the .6 being left out of equation) just on the stock tank,
A KLR that has a big bore kit or maybe is engine swapped with something else, the stock engine anyways getting 53mpg in my real world testing, and the Gen 2 KLRs have an aftermarket 10 gallon fuel tank option.
Nice kit- I would add an air compressor
More weight equals less distance.
Although if you find something that doesn't weigh much go for it right
@@EDV8ZR1 A lexin rechargeable air pump weighs a pound. That’s not hurting your distance.
I sure wish I would’ve have a pump with me when I get a fence staple in my motorcycle tire.
@@chevyon37s well that's great and the tire Slime about half a pound
@@chevyon37s so about 2 lb and he can keep riding unless it happens again then another container of tire slime
