Bruce Cockburn is a criminally overlooked singer/songwriter and guitar virtuoso, a little like Richard Thompson from England. I was lucky enough to see Bruce live twice. It’s like watching a master sculptor work. Enjoyed these other Canadian choices too. Thanks, Joe!

      Hi, hope you're doing well.
I am a stage Tech in Calgary for about 30 years.
I tell my friends the only two musicians that I have seen play one guitar and sound like 2 is Lindsey Buckingham and Bruce !!
I know they both played 12-string but still it's an incredible Talent.
Thank you very much and take care

I love Saga. Some of their members are from my little hometown of Oakville, Ontario, Canada. This is from their classic 1981 album Worlds Apart, which I played the crap out of when it was released and I was 19. From the same LP react to the other big hit, Wind Him Up, as well as Framed and Amnesia. One of their first hits in the late 1970s were Don't Be Late and How Long. I love their mix of synth, prog and rock.

Bruce's name is pronounced Co-Burn. Pacing the Cage is a throwback to his earlier folk music days in the late 60's and early 70's. Definitely a man reflecting back on his life and career.

That was a fantastic reaction Nick. Nice add of of Saga. That was the perfect bow on the marathon. Rush would have been doing I believe Moving Pictures at this time so both fairly progressive then. When I compare Bruce Cockburn to Dire Straits it not in style but in each of their progressions as musicians and diversity of music. The more of Bruce Cockburn you listen to the more hard core a fan you become. The Hip are gold as always. Like Steely Dan they had a stretch of a decade without having a real weak song on an album. Not saying they are in the same league musically, just that for chord progression, songwriting and catchy riffs they were elite. Anything from Up To Here, Road Apples, Fully Completely, Day For Night, or Trouble At the Henhouse is gold. No filler songs on any of these albums. Blue Rodeo always had them catchy riffs and great vocals and great singer/songriter content. Great band and awsome reaction. Really liked the Saga at the end. Great way to wrap it up.

In 80-82 I was in a band with Glenn Miilchem before he went with Blue Rodeo and I was so sad, but happy for him. He is a fantastic amazing drummer who was only playing basic stuff with them as that's the sound they wanted. He toured the world and has a successful career but I know he never got to shine like he could have. /2c

That's a great selection of songs! 😊👍 'Marathon' is my 17-year-old Son's favourite Rush song, Bruce Cockburn's songs are usually pretty good (and especially 'I Wonder Where The Lions Are'!), and great to hear some SAGA, too! 😊👍 They've always had their biggest following in Germany, strangely enough! 😄 Which I too am originally from, but I'd moved to NZ 20 years ago 🙂

😂 I'm sorry, Nick. About halfway through Alex's solo, I just started laughing 😃 You were doing great air guitar 🎸 until it got to that harmonic right off the low tone. You just shook your head and gave up. I feel the same way when I try to replicate what I call Geddy Riffs, and I just stop 😅 Mad respect, but sometimes I just think 'you've GOT to be kidding me! How?', and I shake my head. 🤘

A very good set of tunes. Thank you! Something to think about down the road is that Canada is a country of many languages. There is also great pop music in languages other than English. French (Québecois), Innuit, Innu, Cree, Iroguoian, Scottish, etc.
Bruce Cockburn is one of the few artists who actually sounds better in person than in a studio. I was lucky enough to see him in small concerts several times in the late 1970s and 1980s. His voice fills an auditorium as does his charisma and good nature.
    Cheers and be well. Thanks!

Nick, what a fantastic selection of GREAT Canadian acts! Now being one myself, I was aware, and love, all that you presented here. Rush being one of my top bands. Red Rider is a group you should introduce Lex to...I'd start with Light In The Tunnel/Human Race (beginning is a great instrumental). Bruce Cockburn (pronounced Co-burn - 'ck' is silent) is a songwriting constant, much like Gordon Lightfoot, Leonard Cohen, Joni Mitchell...my personal fave has always been Lovers In A Dangerous Time (which you've done). Loved the Hip from nearly the beginning. Blue Rodeo is such an amazing band - this is one where a deep dive with Lex is in order! Bad Timing, Diamond Mine, 5 Days In May would all fit nicely here! And Saga - great 80's rock.
    This made my Friday!! Thanks.

Red Rider was good but lead singer Tom Cochrane was the big name in the band and had great success later as a solo artist. Still, try their hit Lunatic Fringe form their time as Red Rider. As a solo singer, listen to his massive hit/anthem Life Is A Highway, Big League and Boys Inside the Man.

Nick, as a guitarist, you owe it to yourself to delve more into Bruce Cockburn. Fortunately, when he finally broke into the U.S. market in the 80’s with his more electric based stuff, the world at large were now able to go back and discover an entire decade of 70’s acoustic genius material hitherto known only to Canadians for the most part. When he left Ottawa at 19 to study guitar and jazz composition at Berklee College of Music, he couldn’t have known both the artistic and humanitarian impact he would have on the world. One music critic referred to him as: “the bearded mystic who crafted fragile melodies on his acoustic guitar and sang with a voice as ephemeral as mist…”; while another said: “Cockburn’s music is most notable for two qualities: the humanist, poetic style of his lyrics… and his intricate finger-picking guitar style, which fuses Mississippi blues with modal jazz harmony, melodic lyricism and cycling rhythms”. Now, two mysteries remain however: 1. How someone who has inspired legions of finger-pickers can still be so underrated; and 2. Despite this, has still had his songs covered by no less than: Jerry Garcia, Michael Hedges, Bare Naked Ladies, Jimmy Buffett, Judy Collins, k.d. lang, and Dan Fogelberg, to name just a few. Well... there are currently 28 albums from which we can judge for ourselves!!

Great set Alex. Mainly the big hits, that’s OK. A couple personal anecdotes: Tom Cochran of Red Rider used to live in my little hometown of Oakville Ontario. My friends dad lived beside him. Also I went to high school in Oakville. The lead singer of Saga Mike Sadler - his younger brother went to the same school at the same time. Had great parties :)

while Saga was playing pretty good sized venues in Germany in the early 80's they played my high school in Toronto a few times. The high school circuit in the 70's and early 80's in Toronto had some bands in their infancy like Rush and Triumph cutting their teeth before they got really popular.

Excellent Joe! Toward the end, the sound reminded me of what I guess is called "jangle pop", which has many fun songs within the canon. Songs and band like Mykonos, Fleet Foxes, Sonoma, Houndstooth, Innocence Mission, Golden Palominos, Polyphonic Spree, Eels, The Byrds, Sneaker Pimps, Nouvelle Vague, Bongwater, Henry Cow, Swans, Fitz & the Tantrums, Chemical Brothers, and This Mortal Coil seem underrepresented in Music Reactionland, but would seem to me to fit here well. More James Coburn, I mean Alexander, I mean Bruce Cockburn!

Was never a huge fan of mid 80s Rush but Marathon kind of struck a chord with me especially with the choral swells at the end...however..as good as the studio version is...the live version from the A Show of Hands tour is infinitely better. It feels fuller and more powerful and, where I think the studio version kind of robs you of a proper ending, the live version gives you the kick ass epic ending it deserves. My suggestion is if you are going to have Lex react to this song I think it should be this live version as opposed to the studio one th-cam.com/video/cxxgEzVkEjI/w-d-xo.html

I hadn't heard this song more than once before because I honestly lost interest in Rush starting with the Power Windows album. The Big Money song is great off it but they became too synthy for my taste as the 1980s wore on. They had good tunes after Power Windows but for me their best music by far is from 1974-84.

Well heck Nick! Its about time you played *Saga* from the era where they finally found their "sound" on World's Apart! EVERY track is perfect on it, and its great on headphones at night . . . but "No Regrets (Chapter 5)" and "No Stranger (Chapter Eight)" are my faves along with the entire album. Not a bad track on it :). THIS is just a beginning to your Saga Rabbit-hole.
Nice variety from Canada here to expose to N&L, Joe!
