    Let me clue you guys in on something that will help you in the future. You will be told all the time by younger listeners that "so and so isn't metal". At the time (this song 1989 but really 70's through late 80's) it was considered metal by the vast majority of people other than the relatively small minority of hardcore metal fanatics at the time. All the other nicknames and subgenre pigeonholing came later. I'm 56 years old, I was there for it all. At the time, if it was loud, fast (relative to the music of the day), and heavy, with distorted guitars, it was considered metal. So take all this labeling with a grain of salt.

    • @Rabant777
      @Rabant777 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      I'm the same age, and was there too.... I accepted the catch all term Heavy Metal encompassing bands across the hard rock spectrum but when I think of metal the first examples I think of have less groove, less pop, less melody, and dress differently. I can remember having the conversation in the mid 80s about the only real metal bands on the Sunset Strip scene were Armored Saint, maybe early Keel, early WASP. You'd get elements of Priest in early Crue, elements of Tygers of Pan Tang in early Black n Blue but the fact that both bands also loved Sweet gave their metal an anthemic glam pop edge.

      Agree, they were heavy for the day and shows were rated , let’s say for adults only. They were lumped into the hair metal but were relevant before the hair band label started.

    • @longbeach7623
      @longbeach7623 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I agree with the OP, and the tribalizing/over-categorization is beyond excessive. It would have been considered metal in ‘89 - as everything was. At the end of the day in hindsight, this is simply classic hard rock.

    • @StuartGray
      @StuartGray 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      53 Here. There was definitely the, "Hair" and "Glam" labels on many bands at the time. Those labels did not come later. Those labels for certain were relevant at the time. All still metal though.

    • @johndonovan758
      @johndonovan758 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      The genre labels I remember people using were "rock," "hard rock," and "heavy metal" ("metal" for short). My informal litmus test for metal was that it was harder, faster, and didn't get much radio play. Most other genre descriptions were just people coining terms and offering two-bit opinions. You'd never walk into a record store in the 80s and look for a section labeled "hair metal." They weren't bothering to differentiate between Dio and Dokken. They were differentiating between Dio and Depeche Mode.

    Motley crue breakdown! 1st album was a fusion of 70's galm rock mixed with some punk and a splash if heavy metal. 2nd album was heavy metal. 3rd album (the hair band album) was more hard rock with some metal infulance. 4th album they were established legends and lost the heavy make up kept the hair. 5th album was heavy/hard rock. they can't be placed in one catagory because they switched it up just enough from album to album in both sound and look. my top 80's band along with g'n'r!🤘🍻🥃

    The answer to what they are is...it's not worth defining. They changed a lot from album to album. They were a glam rock band that went metal for Shout At the Devil, then settled in as just a good rock band. They got lumped in with hair metal because they were a Sunset Strip band, but they were predecessors to that "hair" band explosion.

    This song came out in 1989, right before grunge took over. I stopped trying to fit them into a genre a long time ago, you're either a Crue fan or you're not. I don't think they ever once in their career tried to fit in.. and for the most part had the "bad boys of Rock" reputation. They are not for everyone as their lyrics can be edgy, but they have always stayed true to themselves in my opinion and just rocked out whenever on stage. I love Crue, always have and always will

I’m blown away that Lex was exposed to classical music. Because hardly anyone I know of, in that age bracket, regardless of color, has much exposure to classical music. Just listen to what nearly every car is playing, driven by a young person, next time you’re driving around, and you’ll know. In my day it was rock and roll, pop, or country stations. Now (unfortunately) it’s pop, hip hop, and rap mostly, with a little rock, country and metal mixed in. At least where I live. But I’m always blasting my Metallica, Iron Maiden, Volbeat etc to try and drown them out

    Motley Crue is a hard band to classify as they took parts, ideas, style from many DIFFERENT genres. They really do not fit the Glam scene, while yes they wear makeup, it is not done to look like a chic. It looks more like a Halloween meets Football player makeup. A little more edgy than a straight up classic rock sound, A little slower and more sing-alongable than Punk, kinda like a pop song, but holding a switchblade. I go with a hybrid Glam/Rock/Skater Punk/Pop Metal band.

    It was a hit at mid to late eighties for the Crue. The subject matter was almost autobiographical and honestly straight to the point. Everybody knew that the band indulged in substances from time to time, and as such the song was somewhat of a cautionary tale.

    Well Brad, the seventies & eighties weren't the only eras that substances were used and/or abused by bands and others. It does go back further and even clean cut groups, the Beatles and others, put out rather interesting material while experimenting with illicit substances. 😎

      Ya and without LSD there would be no Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds......and its funny how the band tried to deny that by making up some other reason for it, I forget what Lennon said exactly but I knew i laughed, and I also had a friend that was a regular tripper, and he said "Man, that song is all about acid, trust me" plus i dabbled once or twice so my doubts were gone.....if you have doubts just drop some acid and listen to the song....

    Motley Crue's genre? It could fit into several categories. To me its 80's hard rock pure & simple. Never cared for the term "hair metal" just sounds derogatory because there were some very talented bands that got lumped into that catch all genre.

    That album and especially that song blew my socks off when it was released! Back then in Germany it wasn't all easy to hear the newest rumors from Sunset Strip, so yes, we kind of heard about Nikki Sixx overdosing and that Dr. Feelgood would be the Crüe's first sober and drug free album, so I kind of expected something less raw than usual. But wow, Tommy Lee's drum beat kicked in and the percussive guitar and bass beat still gives me goosebumps. On the album there was an image of them in restraining jackets on the inner sleeve or somewhere which gave a "Crüe unlike" expression of intellectuality and sarcastic reflexion on their sober production which worked perfectly with their incredibly mixed sound compared to earlier albums. The whole thing just felt like State of the Art and I remember a few of my mates tattooing the album cover onto their arms :) 49 now and still don't want to miss one second of my 80's/90's metal life 😄

    Motley Crue is somewhere in the middle of Glam and Hair. This album was a later album by the way. They did a good job adapting to new sounds to get into the early 90s....Then grunge came along.

    This came out in 1989. It's funny how in the 80s and 90s these crisp, hi-fi, modern recordings always sounded like garbage because you were listening to a tape you copied off a buddy who taped it off his buddy who taped it on some POS radio deck... off a sketchy FM radio broadcast. But now in 2021 it's a compressed audio stream from a video playing a compressed audio stream from a video that's playing a second generation 128-bit MP3 that someone downloaded from a Hotline server in 1998... love the reactions, though, guys! :D

    Motely Crue is one of those bands that you can't really define in one sub-genre or the other. They were a little bit heavy metal, a little glam/hair metal, a whole lot of rock. A melting pot of that era. Either way you want to classify them though, they were one hell of a good time and they came at you hard & fast! I've seen them live about 10ish times over the decades. My first concert was a Crue concert. I was 12. 🤣 That was back in the 90s. My favorite performance of theirs, however, was the Sunset Strip Music Festival back in 2011. They headlined. The festival itself blocks off an iconic section of the strip where the Rainbow Bar & Grill, The Roxy, Whiskey A Go Go and the Viper Room are, as well as where the old Key Club used to be. I remember them coming on stage just as the sun was setting right after Bush performed (excellent performance as well), with the neon lights of these iconic venues shining all around. It was surreal to see them performing on the very strip that they made a name for themselves. Tommy gave an awesome, emotional speech about "coming home" right before they performed Home Sweet Home. Definitely a night to remember! There were many great live performances I saw of theirs, but that one sticks with me. Great reaction btw!

    Mick Mars will never be called The Best Who Ever Did It but, to me, he's always my favourite guitar player and one of my favourite humans ever because not only can he craft and pull off any sick riff in existence, but you know that when you hire him on he rolls with your band come hell or high water. To do what he did, with the people he had to do it with, with the conditions he had to do it in... he's a Guitar God.

    Hair metal was the scene in 80s hard rock. All the big bands had outrageous hair. The genre kind of died off when everyone started doing ballads instead of actually rocking. So bands like Guns n Roses and Metallica took center stage until grunge came along.

    • @FuckYoutubeAndGoogle
      @FuckYoutubeAndGoogle 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's what happened according to Dee Snider, but it's not really all that accurate. The fact of the matter is that while Metallica and GnR became hugely popular bands most of the popular "Metal" bands were still Hair bands like Motley Crue and Bob Jovi right up until Grunge came along in the 90's. While the thrash and extreme stuff got more popular in the late 80's it still wasn't the dominant form of Metal in the pop world, it was only dominant in the Metal scene itself.

    So many sub categories in Rock and Metal that it can be confusing, especially when there is disagreement with people on what a band's music can be classified as. There's Heavy Metal, Power Metal, Thrash Metal, Symphonic Metal, Prog Metal, Glam/Hair Metal, Black Metal, Death Metal and probably others I have not mentioned too.

    Hair metal and glam metal are the same thing, and either way not true metal but rather hard rock, though early Motley Crue albums were more metal, and they always towed that line closer than most other hair metal bands.
