- We're going to show you how to install a French drain in flat yard with no slope. A yard that ponds water, is always muddy, hard to mow the grass, you can't let the pets out, you can't let the children go out and play until drought season. A yard with a true drainage problem that you can't get back until a drought. We're going to show you how to fix this with a DIY French Drain system.

This is the first time I've heard of filter media! It's a relief to not have to figure out how to get all the tons of stone into my yard, lol. I'd much rather fill it with pipes instead and just have the top 3" be the stone.
I found one thing useful, so have my upvote! Even though I'm not going to be doing a drain any time soon I'm in the middle of a minor yard project and "double handle your dirt" is obvious but genius. I ended up digging out dirt onto the sidewalk and then having to scrape it into the wheel barrel and you are right -- it doesn't work well that way!
Wow, impressive, and I have never seen so many water pipes in my life! 🤯
The white pipe is to create airspace. Smaller Stone when damp will allow roots to grow inside it and thrive. when you create airspace with a good filter media like this quality perforated virgin white pipe the tree roots can't survive. Tree roots are a major cause of French Drain failure.
@FRENCHDRAINMAN how do you determine how many basins/ French drains you need? Were going to add some to our golf course. If you have a 100' area that you needed to add French drains to, how many are you putting in there? Thanks
Love the spacers
Thanks for showing that discharge. Awesome video.
Can outdoor sumps be used in areas where it gets below freezing? I had someone quote me 17k to install some catch basins and French drain. Was told can’t use a sump here because of winter.

Are you using smaller stone with the white pipe? This looks angular rather than the 1.5 round rock that previous videos recommended
@4:55 I explain that in detail
Thank you for commenting and contributing
Would a 2-3" or so turf-restrictor ring on the yard drain be a good improvement?
We use FDM Turf Restrictor Plate

Will this freeze in the winter? (Northern Illinois)
We are in Michigan, and none of our systems freeze; they're all built for the North.

What about some vertical drainage? I have seen videos about this and it is very inexpensive to do.
I get much better results in clay with horizontal systems.
Aware your team does a lot of jobs and you're limited in time due to the nasty winters up there, but it would be great to see how the system is working after a job like this job in particular. That yard was really bad and a good before/after would be so nice to see.
👍
Do you have any videos of work on a crushed stone walkway that is flooding. Should i install french drain or yard drain

Has anyone ever told you that you sound like the guy who used to narrate Cold Steel knife videos? Lol
How would you recommend I install a drainage system in my backyard?
I live in Southern Nevada. We don’t get a whole bunch of rain annually but when it does rain it usually causes lots of flooding. Every winter our backyard turns into a swimming pool. We also get flash floods in the summer and spring. It’s so bad that I have to sandbag a portion of my concrete patio so the water doesn’t make it to the back door.
I want to install a drainage system that will move that water out to the front yard. The front yard has a pretty steep natural slope, around 5 degrees.
I have no experience with doing something like this but I’m more than willing to do the work. Any suggestions?

What’s up with the white flexible pipe? It looks like it’s perforated or has slots cut in it. What is its application? Thanks.
It is a 3" virgin perforated pipe that takes the place of stone. It's Heavy Duty and creates more air space than stone. Tree roots can't grow in air space they need damp small stones to survive. It also works out to be a savings for the homeowner and DIYers. A cost effective better French Drain.
Love the spacers. How long have you been using them?
Started working with spacers in 2019. Now we have a HDPE spacer that lawnmowers can't break. PVC risers would crack when heavy riding lawn mowers drove over them. These are Indestructible.

thank-you for a great job well done . What a day of work !!! Your guys really know how to get a job done. . Waiting for the next big rain !!!! looking forward to finally being able to use my yard and put a play set in for my grandkids. 😊
how do you terminate the pipes at the sump pump
I need to make a video on that. In short we hook the solid catch basin pipe up and the 8 slot just lays in the sump pit because the water falls out of the pipe right in the pit.
Been watching more videos- When do you consider a blind inlet vs an inline catch basin? Seems like they both collect the same bulk surface water and the blind inlet kills two birds with one stone saving money cause you can run the bulk water through the perforated
Well, our fabric really works well, especially once the grass roots grow through it.
So, a blind inlet will assist until the roots are fully developed.
How much should we expect to pay for this?

Excellent video and excellent design of the new 5-10 year sediment trap with a 6 inch opening. I am still learning from you after watching your videos for 4 years and installing many French drain systems.
Awesome system! Can these catch basins with risers be used in the northern states/Canadian winters? Spring thaw leaves pools of water in parts of the yard.
It was made for Canada winters

@@FRENCHDRAINMAN fantastic! I was worried about it cracking in the cold. I also saw your video with the heat tape inside the pipe, and coiled in the basin. You did say it's made for the cold climate in that video! Thank you very much!
Pleeaaase move the camera slower so we watchers don't get dizzy.
👍
Great Clean Up
Great Vid! Again!Quik question can this method be done with your 3” French drain kits?
And over all your 3” through out the system?
Great air space idea by the way!
Thank you in advance for any response!
God bless!
FDM 6" round will overwhelm a 4" line. If you use a 3" line for the yard drain in Florida, you will be disappointed. It all depends on the type of rain you get and what part of the country you live in.
A 3-inch French drain is fine just about anywhere.
So the neighbor had concrete that sent most of this water into this yard...
I'd have just mulched in compost to the poor quality soil and raised the surface of the yard above the neighbor's stupid concrete.
😂
I don't understand why the air space created by the white pipes is preferable to stone. Also, why are they called filter media?
Tree roots can grow in damp stone. They can't grow in large voids filled with air. Also this is less labor for DIYers. I would not recommend this for vehicles to drive over. In that case build with stone.
Hope this answers all your questions.
Thank you for commenting and watching!
@@FRENCHDRAINMAN Thanks!
@@FRENCHDRAINMAN When you say "not recommended for vehicles to drive over" what about riding mowers? Is a riding mower and a fat person driving it too much weight to go over the white pipe "filter media"?
How do you cut the sod out so nicely to be put back in again?
How did neighbors decide who provides electric to pump?
Another great video, thanks.
Great job , one question I did have is , with the drain pipe from the pump could it be feed into an solid pipe under the surface to a pop up emitter further away. Reason I ask is because my driveway is beside my neighbours fence and he would not want the drain pipe attached to his fence so if I could feed it into a pipe under the surface beside the driveway to an emitter that would work.

is there a layout design of how this is laid out? like design spec.

Can I put a solid cover on the sump pit, or does it require a vent on top ?
I sell a 4" solid plug in our online store. I recommend that because it's really easy to pop it out and look inside to make sure that everything is working properly.
Is there anyway to put a backup battery on these outdoor systems in the case of a power outage? I know you talk about more chamber as one option, but is there an option that keeps the pumps going?
I advise my customer get a whole house generator. If that's not in the budget they get a inexpensive back up generator.
