This LP, Tijuana Brass and Dave Brubeck on the album stack console player. Mother would call from the other room, "play them again." This is my childhood.

I am 77 now and this is still the only vinyl album I had worn out twice. I remember trying to find a third copy but everyone said “oh you mean Brazil 66! Gave up until now.Can you wear out a TH-cam site??
Sergio Mendes and his groups are legendary! Always loved his extraordinary musical arrangements & voices.

I am a fan of Sergio since I was a kid , he and his musicians are simply fantastic, even if Brasil '65 is completely different from Brasil' 66 and then Brasil'77 always simply the best parabens Sergio!!!!
I remember when this album came out in 1965, the year I graduated from high school. I heard the final track ,"Reza" on the radio and was completely blown away by it and immediately went out and bought the LP. I no longer have a working turntable so must listen to the CD version which I was fortunate enough to find. Fantastic album regardless of which format you listen to it on

I like and enjoy all kinds of music. The Brasilian sound was at it's peak in th 60's but still popular among music enthsiasts like myself. Give credit to Sergio Mendes and his Brazil 66 music of the then popular Beatles. Antonio Carlos Jobin, Astrud Gilberto, and so many others.

These then still very young folks made something so beautiful, it not only appealed to other young folks across the world, but was also so elegant and smooth it could bridge the gap between generations with ease. Not only young students were listening to this in their student rooms, but also adults in classy bars and hotels across the world. Furthermore, it stood the test of time with the same ease, and is still so super classy almost half a century later... That's how strong these records were, are, will remain for a very long time ! I went to see the Smothers Brothers in San Francisco when I was 14. THIS is the opening act - I was transfixed and transformed forever. Still one of my favorite albums of all time, all just so good!

I was about twelve years old, still a young boy in Trinidad in the Caribbean. When I first heard this sound from my neighbor to the south of Trinidad, his sound was something very unique, so I became a fan of his ever since. I saw him in 2014 in Oakland California, at the age of sixty five years of age.my soul is now very satisfied, I saw my idol.
I saw him in London in 2019.
I am 65.

I bought this album when it came out. Still sounds great.
I bought this when it came out in 1965 and I never failed to be thrilled by it. He subsequently became better known when he developed in Brazil 66. It was never the same after Lani Hall left and he literally ran out of ideas for years and no amount of changing personnel made it any better.. He redeveloped in the earlier part of this century with Will I am and re-arranged versions of his old hits. Sometimes I wish time had stood still.
Brazil 65 was the best ever. 66 was commercial junk to me. Wanda De Sah, Rosinha de Valencia were so beautiful

Sergio lived in Silverlake (suburb of Los Angeles) in the 1970's, with his son Kleber and daughter Asinia. They were our friends, playing in Silverlake playground all day, into night in the summer. My beautiful wife Amparo is from Niteroi so this album had some kinda influence on my life. Thank you Uncle Richard.
Sérgio is a master playing. Great swing tempo and endless melodies. Great times - I was 1 year old kkk

Bud Shank (the saxophonist/flutist) wasn't credited on this here. He was ahead of Getz in being an exponent of Brazilian music (all the way back in 1953, with Laurindo Almeida), but never had the popular recognition that Stan received. He had great lyricism and tone, and was a go-to player in West Coast session work. Still have this album on original vinyl .
Wow....I thought it was Getz....very similar smooth style....never would have guessed. I wonder if Getz tailored his bossa nova sound to Bud's...
@@SSGTA440 Oh no, not at all: Bud Shank plays ALTO Sax, while Stan Getz plays the TENOR Sax, and their styles are quite disctintive and different. Keep listening both and soon you will perceive their differences.
I wonder if it was Bud Shank who was playing flute so marvelously at the Lighthouse when I was there around 1972ish. Laurindo Almeida was headlining, playing with Ray Brown and Shelly Manne. I was new and green on the scene.
Bud Shank, an unsung genius.
It is not a story of "popular recognition". Just a story of production, management and marketing. Creed Taylor, producer, felt something was happening and seized the opportunity. In a few months he produced on Verve label : Getz-Gilberto and Getz-Gilberto vol.2 ; Stan Getz & Luiz Bonfá "jazz samba encore!" (with the same recipe : Bonfá plays guitar and his wife Maria Toledo sings) ; and also "Stan Getz with guest artist Laurindo Almeida".
Bud Shank and Laurindo Almeida's album had recorded "Laurindo Almeida featuring Bud Shank" in 1953 and 1954 (ten years earlier !!). The label was Pacific Jazz Records, not Verve Records, the label with the biggest jazz catalogue. That's the difference.
I saw them perform at The Trident in Sausalito in 1965. Standing room only, and an unforgettable scene.
Very cool. I have an album somewhere in my record collection that was recorded live at the Trident in Sausalito, I forget the name of the artist but I know it was jazz LP.

This is the best because it is not overproduced. Plus Bud Shank and Roshina De Valencia.

This is more traditional Bossa music, whereas Brazil 66 was aimed more towards the US audience in it's production. Also Lannie Hall had a more polished commercial sound. Wanda sounds more like Astrud Gilberto in her sound and delivery

This is by far one of my favorite bossa nove sets. Been of fan of Sergio Mendes since "65 when I was 10 years old. I have the vinyl which I have probably worn out from playing it so much. Luckily, I found a cd copy. Thanks for loading.

Mi unue aŭdis ĉi tiun albumon kiam mi estis en elementa lernejo. Mi ŝatis ĝin de tiam.
Esse manifesto musical seria uma espécie de embrião de Sergio Mendes & Brasil 66. Aqui com Wanda Sá (mulher de Edu Lobo) de perfil bossa novista e o grande momento da música Brasileira rotulado de MPB, e Rosinha de Valença (diziam que era a Baden Powel versão feminina), uma grande violonista que rolou por aqui até meados de 1970, depois , foi difícil encontrá-la. Voltou para o seu Recife amado, e pouco se soube dela.
Sergio formaria Brasil 66 com Lani Hall uma norte americana no vocal principal (mulher de Herb Alpert um trumpetista a lá mexicano), os brasileiros João Palma e Jose Soares batera e percussão respectivamente e com Karen Phillips outra nos vocais norte americana e Bob Matthews no baixo. Em 1968 a banda troca de nomes e muitos músicos participam , como Oscar de Castro Neves, John Pisano, Dave Grusin, Tião Neto, Gracinha Leporace no vocal,
(mulher de Sergio) e continua Lani Hall, e outros músicos além de orquestra. Bem, dai o panorama é outra, mais World Music. Dai vem Beatles, Bacharach, Simon and Garfunkel, até mesmo Cole Porter, mas, com finíssimo bom gosto.
Na realidade, ela era fluminense, natural de Valença RJ, que adotou como sobrenome, Alfredo. Nos deixou em 10/06/2004, depois de 12 anos em estado de coma. Abraço.

You also uploaded Samba para dos with a very bright setting : Brookmeyer , Zoots sims and lalo shiffrin, i had some songs from this albums that i got from the Zecalouro web site when it was providing classical MPB (thanks to them it was a fantastic site). I wonder who plays the Xylophone ...
Last this Brazil 65 that i very surprising to me, i always had mixed feeling about Sergio Mendes, his Bossa nova was too kitch/pop for me, but this album is some exception due to the great guitar player Rosinha de Valencia, a very sweet singer (wanda sà, i have her debut album Vaguamente that she probably recorded with Roberto Menescal .. ) , bud shank on the sax ...
This Sergio Mendes album is really superiori to what he did after which was much more designed to sell record over the world.
I really don't like much Mendes version of Mas que Nada since the orignal of Jorge Ben (1963 Samba esquema novo anoter marvelous album) is so much better.
Gotta check out the Jorge Ben version!
My Wanda Sa Story
One night in Tokyo, maybe the mid 90’s, Wanda Sa stole my heart forever.
Here ‘s what happened. No big deal, really, except maybe for me.
She was performing with her husband, I think, in a very intimate venue, and they played for like three hours, and I was just blown-away. I could not believe my ears.
After the show they remained on stage to chat with folks in attendance who might want to meet them and chat a bit. Very friendly.
I proceeded to the stage front, with a couple of row of heads in front of me. I had always had kind of a crush on Wanda Sa. And I’m standing there happy to be looking at her so closely. And all of a sudden she reaches over the rows of heads while looking directly at me, and she pinches me on the cheek. !!!
Guess how many times a lady has ever done that to me, before or since. Zero.
Wanda Sa stole my heart, and gladly.
I Start to listening Sergio Méndez, Brasil 66. when I was 12 yrs old, fall in love with Bossa Nova instantly.
Since that day until Now.

I can’t help thinking that Mendes hadn’t found the sound he was looking for. It is a good jazz album, but lacking the close harmonies of Brazil 66 vocals.

Absolutely wrong! Neither is "better", both '65 and '66, together with the several other groups are just different, but every version is best in its own sense.
