@GrandLineReview I'm getting there, it wasn't one of the bad ones at least! Definitely better after getting my dose of villian analysis! I have been enjoying this series a lot and agree with a lot of the takes you have on your rankings so far. Also, I feel so dumb for never noticing that Spandams mask is a reference to Mankind! I loved mick foley in the wwe as I kid and am kicking myself for not making the connection! Thank you for taking the time to reply to me, I can't wait for your video on Boa Hancock in this series. She is such a complex and fascinating character when viewed through the lense of the arc antagonist. And although she doesn't really remain a villian she is very unique in her role as one when she is protrayed as such!
Spandam got under my skin almost immediately. I think what makes him so great as a villain is that he is one of the most realistic. People like Spandam seem to exist in abundance, so that mix of smugness, weakness and sadistic abuse of power easily strikes a nerve in the reader. I would argue that Spandam practices Corrupt/Mad Justice though. Akainu has some semblance of a moral code and rules that he follows, whereas justice for Spandam is defined by whatever stands in the way of what serves his ascent to power and influence
Yeah, unlike Akainu, Spandam is purely selfish. He's not doing any of this for a greater good. He represents everything vile about the world government & the celestial dragons. He definitely enjoys what he does, quite sadistically too, whereas I don't get the vibe that Akainu enjoys killing people. Moreso the, "I'm the only one with the strong enough will to do it.", vibe.
It should be noted that Mick Foley is also the kindest and purest soul in the world and he was totally chill about the "gimmick infringement" thing with his mask
My real problem with spandams end is that he was able to walk. I know Robin's attack on him was supposed to be somewhat comedic, but we actually see his spine snapped. I really think him being paralyzed would have been a more fitting punishment.

Spandom is IMO the reason Water 7 / Ennies Lobby is so good because he's not a typical One Piece villain he's more of a real world villain (e.g. a corrupt politician). Its like Cersei Lannister from Game of Thrones (before season 8) she to is a fool, incompetent, rash, petty, but she's also one of the most dangerous people because of those traits (plus her position, daddy's money & his reputation). You don't need to be a great fighter to be a great villain & Spandam is a great villain, even if "those fans" don't agree & only care about power levels & battle strength.
Spandam is the buggy of the marines - failing upwards in hilarious and even cruel ways. Oda makes the marines so serious but I think it would have been funny to have a comic relief admiral
Honestly, Spandam imo is one of the best villains in the series. I get most people only like villains in this series that ooze power and charisma, but he works so well as a weakling who got to hold power. He's incompetent, impulsive, prideful and so many other things and those are what makes him dangerous. It's just nice to have an antagonist like that who is weak and stupid, but still very dangerous..
I am still floored on how much power Spandam's father Spandine has. He can apparently promote people to CP-0 and remember those agents have to directly serve the World Nobles if they wish which is how Spandam is even in CP-0 to begin with despite the Enies Lobby incident being his fault.
I’m sure they have some sort of medical team. Your spine being snapped in half isn’t instantly fatal, even in real life, you only die from that when it messes with other bodily processes like breathing.
Spamdam is actually one of my favourite villains in OP because he's weak. He's clumsy, he's physically poor, and he can barely fight. However he's not stupid. He's clumsy, not stupid. He managed to figure out Pluton's blueprints were with Tom, he managed to successfully lead as Chief of CP5, He managed to convince the 5 Elder Stars to allow him to search for Pluton's blueprint in the first place. Nepotism can do a lot, but it can't do everything. Spandam also almost succeeded, even his use of the Buster Call could be twisted into the correct thing to do if you think about the value Robin and Pluton's Blueprints had to the WG. If CP9 were even slightly stronger than they were, he would have won. He would have broken Robin, he would have gotten Pluton's Blueprints. he would have probably been promoted to CP0 with that. The only reason he failed was because the straw hats were the straw hats, If it was almost any other crew, Spandam would have won. He's clumsy, not incompetent. That's why his the Chief of Cipher Pol instead of an Agent. He's a man with a plan and his plans seemed to almost always work. Just because he needs other people to do the heavy lifting for him doesn't mean he's not incredibly dangerous. I love Spandam for that.
one of the best things about spandam is that thanks to him we got one of the best moments in one piece history: straw hat's decleration of war against the world government. This single scene solidified one piece in my mind as one of the greatest pieces of fiction ever concived
Great video. You always do so well in my eyes. Oh and its finally Time for the galaxy impact I am so excited to see it animated. Also that land mine was good thinking.
I think that instead of getting his spine snapped( which should have left him paralyzed) he should have been buried under some debris or from Luffy and Luccie’s fight and as Robin leaves with the strawhats and as Ennies lobby is being destroyed Robin looks back seeing Spandam scream and struggle with the island crumbling around him
So true about Spandam being sore winner. He's a head stepper. Strong agree about being kinda 1 note at end, and punishment not being enough. Oda did such amazing job of making us hate Spandam, that the reader wanted even more vengeance
It's interesting for me to imagine Spandam w battle power of his own, bc i wonder if it would actually make Spandam a bit less threatening in ways. Bc it's scheming and underhandedness that he does bc he can't just fist fight like Lucci or Luffy, that makes him most dangerous i think. I would agree that Spandam w fighting power is not as scary or dangerous as a Spandam that knows he's a weak fighter, and so finds ways to cheat and use others and other weapons to work around this. I liked part about Lucci being like the physical antag of the arc, but Spandam being the "spiritual" antagonistic force. That feels spot on to me, and is part of what makes Water 7 so amazing imo. Also i had never heard of Doriki before so thank you for teaching me this
Spandam definitely has the animal tamer aspect of his character but is also imo pretty similar to a clown with his comedic scenes and his general design. Oda does a good job incorporating the seriousness of a tamer or ringmaster and the comedic eeriness of a clown. Love water 7 and Enies lobby!! 🙏🏿
One of the craziest things about Spandam is that not only did he have no forgiveness for Robin and Franky for what he "thought" they would do, but he actively tried to do exactly what he was worried they would do, because he thought it would be justice if he did that exact thing.
Imagine how cool it would’ve been if Robin’s finisher on Spandam rendered him paraplegic and the last we see of him at Enies Lobby is him begging Rob Lucci to come and save him
"don't let this Spandam lore distract you from the fact that in 1998, The Undertaker threw Mankind off Hell In A Cell, and plummeted 16 ft through an announcer's table!
i think absolute justice is spandam's means to the end of his ego gratification, rather than being a separately held ideal. were an explicitly evil force in control of the world, he would seek to selfishly increase his rank in that rather than fight against it in the name of "justice".
I imagine Spandam became a CP0 agent on recommendation from Lucci, just so that Lucci could fuck with Spandam by ordering him to do simple shit like picking up coffee or donuts
spandam being an agent in cp0 instead of someone in a place of command makes me hope that he had an arc off screen where he turned himself around and trained up and stuff, that would fix the point that he cant be a good agent, also cause I want to see him use the 6 powers while wielding funkfreed, that would be funny looking
spandam reminds me of pariston from hxh. they both give me joker vibes. just pure chaos for the fck of it. and even tho they’re hard to take serious they’re intelligent asf and know how to get what they want in the most vile way possible
Spandam's use as an agent is in intelligence gathering, something that cipher pol really struggles with. He was able to find two keys to the ancient weapons, accomplishing much more than Crocodile. Lucci doesn't need more power in CP0. The WG already have the marines, holy knights, Eldar Stars, and pacifista/seraphim to accomplish what they want militarily. Cipher Pol is supposed to provide intel, not power, which Spandam excels at.
If Spandam is a capable enough investigator that he found out about the location of the blueprints to an Ancient Weapon then I think that alone should classify him as one of the most dangerous people in the series. Crocodile was further away from finding an Ancient Weapon than Spandam was, despite being portrayed as wildly more competent and having significant amounts of resources to fall back on with Baroque Works. Like, combining the ambition to locate such a thing with *actual results* to back it up isn't a bad way to get into a job. As much as his dad's connections certainly helped him, it seems likely that he's got his own merits somewhere along the line otherwise I doubt Lucci would keep him around in CP0 now that his daddies influence has been diminished.
Liam when are we going to get a behind the scenes video. A peek around the curtain to see how you bring us One Piece Theory goodness each week. How do you it? Now back to you, me...
I remember thinking Robin's attack straight up killed him. And honestly, I wish it did. I get Oda doesnt want the straw hats to have a body count but still, this guy did too much, a bitter way to go would have been perfect
I want to see this man be forcefully trained by a physically powerful character, making him not only the most dangerous influentially, but also decently threatening face to face. He could genuinely scare Luffy straight, just like when the Gods/Giants of skypia showed up, equal to the desperation when he was about to tear his arms off
Hey Mr. Internet man can you please do a antagonist video about Foxy next, he is in my opinion the best and most feared antagonist in all of One Piece.
Spandam is one of my favorite characters esthetically because of his mask. Reminds me of Mick Foley’s Mankind mask. Edit: 12:43 love me a Mick Foley reference
I had to stop at the very first picture you showed of Spandam because I couldn't recognize him without the mask. I was like "wait, isn't that Spandine, his father? Is it going to be a joke on the fact his position is entirely due to his father's connections and he's worth nothing without his father?" But no, it wasn't. You managed the exploit of showing all the serious and dark sides of the character which in my mind were completely burrowed under his buffoon tendencies and under the idea of Lucci being the main antagonist of the arc. I think Spandam is what Helmeppo could have evolved into, if he kept on the same path, without Koby to inspire him and Garp to guide him. It's funny to compare him at the beginning of OP, VS Spandam, VS St Charlos, to see the differences and similarities in writing.
Considering they let Luffy run around free for years and when he did become a pirate never took him seriously at first despite knowing the true nature of the Gum Gum Fruit I'd say they're on equal grounds with Spandam when it comes to incompetence.
Chief Spam, as I call him, continues the idea of "cowards given too much power without doing anything to earn it" started by Helmeppo in Shellstown. But unlike our favorite butt-chin guy, it is clear from the get-go that this fellow Nepo-Baby will never be redeemed, no matter how funny his freakout faces are. Rob Lucci is the sword (leopard claws?) of the CP9 operation; despite his natural talent for massacres and desire for blood, he cannot act upon his natural instincts unless the "unfairly weighted scales of justice" give him the order. Ultimate "parents dropped you as a baby" move of stabbing the Buster Call snail to yell at your subordinates not withstanding. Kaku's character is a better illustration of "realizing you are a cog in a greater evil machine", but in my mind, Lucci put on the fetters of World Government forces willingly to get immunity for the terrible carnage he was capable of. It's a bit of a "Fenrir being subdued by the ribbon fetters of the Aesir" situation; I have little doubt that Rob Lucci would bite off Spandam's hand, better still more of him, if he ever felt abused or jilted out of rightful "freedom in the shadows" afforded by being a CP9 and then a CP0 officer.
Honestly the better comparison would be Sabaody, with Charlos and Kizaru. The punch fighting villain and the villain who gets punch-fighted. Also, nothing to do with the video, but I just thought of this, I wondered if the ancient weapons were actually Joy-Boy’s, all the weapons are located in locations he’s really important in you know Wano with poneglyphs, Fishman Island with the mermaid princess and (i wouldn’t be surprised if the last ancient weapon is in the Sky Islands).
Just started video. . but spandam was the focus of our hatred and lucci was basically spandams main weapon.... You explained it just as well if not better as I was typing this 😂

I love how the Sea train arc split the antagonist into two. Rob Lucci is there as a physical threat and Spandam is there act as the villain.
Great video. You always do so well in my eyes. Oh and its finally Time for the galaxy impact I am so excited to see it animated. Also that land mine was good thinking.
I see grandline review, i click!
The irony of Spandam's mask coming straight off Mick Foley, one of the most kind and caring people in the world is not lost on me.
Ceasar Clown would be nice to see next, he ends up as more refined version of the kind of villain Oda was aiming for with Spandam.
I always appreciated that Spandam was not a strong individual because it let us know that even people with no powers were dangerous in a shonen manga.
I think that instead of getting his spine snapped( which should have left him paralyzed) he should have been buried under some debris or from Luffy and Luccie’s fight and as Robin leaves with the strawhats and as Ennies lobby is being destroyed Robin looks back seeing Spandam scream and struggle with the island crumbling around him
Love from Belgium 🇧🇪 ❤ Your title had me laughing for 10 minutes ❤😂😂😂😂😂😂
I think Kuro is bored out there alone, so let Axe-Hand Morgan be next.
Spandam has a sword that's also an elephant. S-tier for me
So true about Spandam being sore winner. He's a head stepper. Strong agree about being kinda 1 note at end, and punishment not being enough. Oda did such amazing job of making us hate Spandam, that the reader wanted even more vengeance
Good Ol Spandam
4:54 not to mention the only other people weve seen request an audience with the gorosei are shanks, imu, cobra, and akainu (?)
Spandam the classic Nepo baby
What a way to start the day, the One Piece way.
For me it's to end it
I only take umbrage with the last statement. I bet Spandam could beat up Nezumi.
Wow, anyone’s a villain now. Spadam is more of a wet towel that the people must step on to succeed!
I remember when I first found out that Spandams mask was based on Mick Foley(Mankind) from the Attitude Era of the WWF/WWE
Bro I been watching you for years and I’m just now subbing
One of the craziest things about Spandam is that not only did he have no forgiveness for Robin and Franky for what he "thought" they would do, but he actively tried to do exactly what he was worried they would do, because he thought it would be justice if he did that exact thing.
Never thought I'd see Kalifa drawn as Bubble Bass from SpongeBob but here we are...and I couldn't be happier 😂
You somehow manage to talk about shit i already know and still make it interesting
I imagine Spandam became a CP0 agent on recommendation from Lucci, just so that Lucci could fuck with Spandam by ordering him to do simple shit like picking up coffee or donuts
The only bright side of Spamdam surviving Robins attack, means Black Maria could’ve survived too.
*THE SPIDER MOMMY IS ALIVE!!!*
spandam being an agent in cp0 instead of someone in a place of command makes me hope that he had an arc off screen where he turned himself around and trained up and stuff, that would fix the point that he cant be a good agent, also cause I want to see him use the 6 powers while wielding funkfreed, that would be funny looking
spandam reminds me of pariston from hxh. they both give me joker vibes. just pure chaos for the fck of it. and even tho they’re hard to take serious they’re intelligent asf and know how to get what they want in the most vile way possible
I think we need the elder stars next, egghead villains wise
Vergo next?! When we thought thats what the peak of armament haki looks like... 🤣
Liam when are we going to get a behind the scenes video. A peek around the curtain to see how you bring us One Piece Theory goodness each week. How do you it? Now back to you, me...
I saw the title and yelled "STOP LYING!"
I remember thinking Robin's attack straight up killed him. And honestly, I wish it did. I get Oda doesnt want the straw hats to have a body count but still, this guy did too much, a bitter way to go would have been perfect
Please make a video about:
If Luffy was evil
I want to see this man be forcefully trained by a physically powerful character, making him not only the most dangerous influentially, but also decently threatening face to face. He could genuinely scare Luffy straight, just like when the Gods/Giants of skypia showed up, equal to the desperation when he was about to tear his arms off
Just remember his name reversed is madnaps...
Hey Mr. Internet man can you please do a antagonist video about Foxy next, he is in my opinion the best and most feared antagonist in all of One Piece.
Could have given him A tier imo. As a whole as a villain he was among the best
Video 404
I love the videos and I hope your day was great. Keep up the great work.
Spandam got the trunks cut 💀
I think we can all agree that the Gorosei and Imu are definitely more dangerous than Spandam.
I'd love to see your analysis on Caesar Crown. He's basically the first real antagonist of the timeskip
Honestly the better comparison would be Sabaody, with Charlos and Kizaru.
The punch fighting villain and the villain who gets punch-fighted.
Also, nothing to do with the video, but I just thought of this, I wondered if the ancient weapons were actually Joy-Boy’s, all the weapons are located in locations he’s really important in you know Wano with poneglyphs, Fishman Island with the mermaid princess and (i wouldn’t be surprised if the last ancient weapon is in the Sky Islands).
before actually watching this. I'd say he is pretty dangerous just because he is careless enough to accidentally trigger a bustercall.
Let's hope the Live Action casts Robert Knepper on the role, so that we can see Spandam fleshed out and on his full potential.
I absolutely love the poorly drawn Lucci and Kaku 😂😂😂 Can I please use them in my videos???
This video doing some justice for Spandam cause God knows he'll never be able to dish out his own justice......
Robin broke this guy the same way Bane broke Batman.
This guy never runs out of one piece content 😂
Of course. One Piece is still running. He can still easily run this channel with One Piece content alone for next 10 years at least.
Oda's biggest mistake with fandom is that he didn't kill him. I'm not sure what purpose he serves now, it just diminishes his role in water 7
Just started video. . but spandam was the focus of our hatred and lucci was basically spandams main weapon.... You explained it just as well if not better as I was typing this 😂
Are you holding back on Lucci till egghead ends?
Spandam is what Helmeppo thankfully didn’t become
Given how he has a mask like Mankind, I'm disappointed that Oda never used Dude Love and Catcus Jack as references.
do alvida next!
do kinda think after how his defeat at franky/nico robin hands being the ones to end the threat of cp9 snapping spandam's back as cathartic as it is feel he should've died from it as he hasn't done much outside getting thrashed in film gold by the prisoners defending luffy.(if anything with the top of the original cp9 in egghead surprised he wasn't there teaming up with york/maybe make her hesitate seeing how deplorable he is.)
