The part that I’m baffled over is the fact American doctors have no clue what this tool is. If this patient was in the US, a foot dr would use a small scalpel and take forever to produce the results this large wide chisel blade produces in minutes. Why they don’t use it here is beyond me.

I’ve had fissure cracks on my heels before….not to this degree by any means….but it was so incredibly painful. So I soaked them….shaved them like the video and then put the large gallon zip lock bags on my feet, slathered them with Vaseline and kept my feet sealed up for a few hours….worked like a charm

If you have a fissure like she did, what hurts so badly is the high sides of the dead skin pressing down on the wound. To make it feel much better, this is what I do. Push the sides together (close the gap) and file over it gently with a nail file until the high sides are filed away. Then I put triple antibiotic ointment, Shea butter, anything oily over the area. Most if the pain is gone! Keep moisturizing and sanding daily.
Disclaimer: I’m not a doctor. DO NOT TAKE A BLADE TO YOUR OWN SKIN, especially if you’re diabetic! That leads to worse things! To really fix the problem, go see a podiatrist, who can fix you up. I’m diabetic, and at first, I was a bit dismissive - why do I need a podiatrist? But once I saw one, and they fixed up my skin, and helped me heal small ulcers, and one saved me from amputation! I realized how important it was for me to have one. 😃

You could also try soaking a 15% salicylic acid body wash and water. Salicylic acid face and body wash goes all over my skin making it smooth and I plug the tub soak my feet unplug at end of shower scrub my feet with a pumice stone and good nail brush then rinse!! I have avoided cracks except one in my mid 20s when I was as heavy as I am now. But I soak them in the salicylic acid and it softens and exfoliates so easily!!!

My podiatrist has taught me how to use a scalpel along with using the Blue Cross cuticle remover to scrape away built up calluses. He told me to to a bit of the cuticle remover on the callous first, then lay a piece of paper towel over that and then saturate the paper towel with more cuticle remover and then let it sit for about a minute. After the top layer is softened I will then take a 22 scalpel blade on the handle for it and use it like someone would use a butter knife to spread butter on toast with just a TINY amount of pressure and scrape away in one direction until I am not removing any more tissue. I will then repeat the cuticle remover step followed by the scalpel step for a maximum amount of times of 5 in one week. I will usually only need to do this once a month. Also, I use the cuticle remover that I use to declare what skin is "dead" and therefore safe to remove using the scalpel (always used like one would use to spread something ie butter on toast, frosting on cake, etc). NEVER use this method on skin that hasn't turned white and/or mushy from the cuticle remover!
However, to keep the calluses from building up too much, when I shower I take a scrub brush for the back and use it on my feet paying attention to the balls and heels of my feet along with going over any areas that have alot of loose skin cells when wet such as my ankles, lower legs and tops of my feet. Of course I will use it on my back too.
My podiatrist has said that because I take care of my feet so well, he only needs to see me once a year unless I have a problem such as an offending nail (I'll be getting the baby toe's toenails removed as they have been causing me some problems whenever I trim them in addition to the nails growing wonky. I have also had the nails on my big toes removed as well because of constant recurring impacted/ingrown nails. Because of the consistent problems with those nails I opted for removal to cut down on the pain I experienced from the impacted and ingrowns as I have CRPS (severe, unrelenting, chronic pain), hyperalgesia (increased perceived pain from painful stimulus) and allodynia (pain from stimulus that shouldn't cause pain) along with having central pain syndrome that aggravates the previous three shit shows I deal with.
Also, I am a diabetic and do agree with what the person who started this comment thread of not using a scalpel on your feet (UNLESS your podiatrist has explicitly told and showed you how to use one properly...... although granted, I imagine that it's because of the super sensitive nerves that I have from the shit show I deal with is the whole reason why he taught me how to care for calluses that I get).

I put my feet in warm water washed them the best I could and then rubbed them with lotion and put bags on them with socks over them for a few hours and I did this 2x and they heal on there own no scraping . The reason why I did this is cause my cracks were really deep too and I pulled skin off and it hurt . But this happened a few weeks before I thought about scrub and soak and lotion and soak in lotion . But my feet feel and looked alot better I do plan on doing this again because I do walk around barefooted and that is what dries and cracks my feet. But I know now at night is the best time to put lotion and plastic bags with socks over them to soak in lotion.

I recommend urea containing lotion for your heels. The only people who get away with not taking care of their feet are those who frequently walk barefoot on wet rough terrain (e.g. beach sand), which helps a lot with natural exfoliation. The rest of us have to put in a lot of work if we have too dry feet. Not that I would trade it for those who have a lot of foot sweat.

Edit: I’ve had skin peeling habit since tweendom and made myself bleed numerous times and even figured out ways to make bandaids after my mother stopped buying them in hopes it would deter me, unfortunately a habit is a habit and it didn’t. Now as an adult I stil take care of my nails and feet but am much more careful, my mother is trained nurse who has worked with scalpels many times throughout her career and begged me to help relieve her of her calluses they are nothing like what you see on these videos but it does give her relief I was so nervous to use such a sharp instrument and I HAVE cut myself with the scalpel a few times, im still learning to use the tools, I santize everything before and after. It’s no joke and not something to be taken lightly. We’ve only recently gotten a proper kit before that I worked with regular nail clippers. I don’t recommend it. If you can see a a professional, do it FIRST.
I’ve taken off my own calluses on my toes and the bone below my big toe, it certainly feels strange afterward there’s no layer between your baby soft skin and the floor, you you have to be careful. The first time I did it it felt so strange. IF you choose to get a professional kit. My best advice WASH YOUR HANDS BEFORE AND AFTER even when dealing with calluses on the hands. And sanitize tools before and after. When I was 15, I was well a kid with poor hygiene and didn’t wash my hands and went to eat afterwards and then I guess I went to check on it again afterwards because a bacteria from my mouth ended up in my bloodstream and caused sepsis. Not exaggerating or joking. That being said My mom has a professional kit cuz she has really bad calluses and poor circulation( I’m still learning to do others and sometimes I cut her and she doesn’t even notice. 🤦🏻‍♀️) but you have to be extremely careful and it’s best left to a professional but if you can’t resist. Santize EVERYTHING CONSTANTLY!
