I think I figured out what FT is going for...Toon accurate bot mode, toy accurate alt mode. That alt mode really looks a lot like an upscaled version of the G1 toy.
Can't believe they didn't work in a waist swivel. Meanwhile XTB is serving up waist swivels and ab crunches so far in their first release. Plus decent vehicle modes.
I wish he showed the figure in leg mode next to his other combiners figures in leg mode , like his Toyworld Scraper in leg mode or his Zeta Bruticus , to give better idea about the size
I quite like the 'toon' aesthetic, but I think that... SOME fine details, like little greebles, pipes, grates and such in places (inner calf, knees, elbows, etc) are... More pleasant than 'this is just a bunch of boxes' SUPER toon aesthetic. Like, some panel lines and mechanical details do NOT go without appreciation.
I love the toon look. But you nailed where they should be making changes. Some little sculpted detail even unpainted in the calf would be great. They used to do that with the dinobots, that was the toon accurate I loved.
I feel like someone wanted to have a slimmed down shovel in bot mode and alt mode really suffers for it. And they haven't figured out waist articulation with combiner stability.
Hey Bobby, Iv just watched TMReviews review of XTB Ratchet which I think is a mess. I mainly collect FT and I do like this figure however I’m not adverse to say and agree with you that this figure has been primarily designed for combined mode, the alt mode is a mess, robot mode should have much better articulation especially a waist swivel for what we pay for, this point is just unacceptable and inexcusable, ok the combiner knee joint can be used as a an ab crunch but they should have made better decisions for articulation. I’m indifferent to toon, I don’t mind it being toon but some sculpt work would be nice to draw the eye. I like how he looks in robot mode and as always their paint work is great. I have expanded the shovel in robot mode as I prefer the look, but for me this is definitely a combiner limb figure, so I’m hoping the payoff in the end is there.
I have to agree....I don't mind the toon asthetic, but i do think you can be toon and still work in some scsulpted detail her and there as a compomise to make these figures look more interesting to the eye. The lack of a waist swivel is a major backwards step for them. my Devy is the OS Gravity Builder and I absolutely love it. Good job BSF!!
He does look nice, aesthetically. But then again, XTB's Fisher Price renditions of Ratchet and Ironhide are still fresh in my mind. In comparison, Fanstoys have made a much more interesting looking bot mode. And this makes it all the more ironic when you compare the much more interesting aesthetic XTB was chasing with its own version of Devastator.
That’s an interesting take. I am a fanstoys fanboy (they can do no wrong to me) and I think they want to be considered the best mp company (which they are) and for that need to make every type of mp. I understand your stance though
@@ryanem49 I have a friend who got the fly boys and made me regret some of my purchase decisions. But I don't think this Devy is going to be on that level
@@ryanem49 I bought the first 3 only. I might sell them at some point. I love the planes, but I don't like the combiner. MMC makes the best combiners, imo.
Bot overall looks good to me, very G1 which Im generally ok with it. It’s a bit too blocky imo and the alt mode looks worse than my original G1 toy from back in the day lol. The Devy though seems like it’s gonna be a straight up beast. They did do a very good job with Superion.
It's because masterpiece started as g1 inspired real vehicles with realistic parts showing through the bot. It's changed over the years and not everyone is on board.
@ericpoulin7922 it looks to me that MP bots are more geared towards the toys that came out, with a secondary focus on toon accuracy. Because obviously you need at least some toon elements, or we don't know what we're looking at haha. Which is why the car bots have race car paint apps on them, but a toon head. I think fanstoys might be like 10% too much on the toon side. But they really are gorgeous figures.
I ordered fantoys scrapper but i might sell it and double down on xtb ,i think i like the realism , colors and proportions on xtb better .am with you ,the over toony feels childish and cheap looking .i get the same vibe with fantoys soundwave,i feel he looks goofy.
In my opinion this is the best MP Scrapper that has been released so far, specially the bot mode. I believe the XTB alt mode, being that it's realistic looking, will look way better but I will never display mine in alt mode and I prefer the FT bot mode to the XTB one because of the wheels showing in the legs and shoulders. Having said that I would like you to know, if you haven't noticed by my comment yet, that I'm a "looking like the original cartoon" fan. Has for the combined mode I will have to wait and see but since I already have the Toy World Devy I will probably use the FT ones to display in bot mode. No Mr. Skullface it wouldn't bother me and even though I'm a "looking like the original cartoon fan" it doesn't bother me when they update the look so it looks a bit better, less childish, with better proportions, etc. I will probably end up buying the one that looks more like the G1 cartoon but it doesn't bother me at all. In my opinion, when the sacrifice to the original cartoon look is made because the original design is very ugly and the designer is trying to improve on it a bit without disrespecting what makes that character visually that character, I'm a fan. When it's done because the transformation and engineering is less complicate, making the life of the engineers easier, like what it looks to be the case with the wheels in the shoulders and legs on the XTB Scrapper, I'm not a fan. One of the reasons I love TF action figures is because they are a feat of engineering and in my opinion that is achieved when the engineers finds a way of making the TFAF look like the original character in both modes while at the same time being able to function properly as an action figure and as whatever it has to do and look in alt mode, depending on what the alt mode is. Thanks for the review Mr. Skullface. P.S. The lack of a waist twist kills me, because it's an easy way out engineering wise.
I just look at the Stunticons and I wish the Constructicons had the same approach. Those nailed the combination of looking cartoon while also having cool proportions and just enough extra details to look interesting. Truly do not care for this pure cartoon above all approach.
Normally, I'm down for the toon aesthetic, but for figures as large as combiners I just don't think it works. At normal size, it gives figures a clean, bold look that stands out and separates them from each other, but at combiner scale, those large sections of undetailed plastic look not only boring but a bit cheap, and that's the last thing I want with figures at this price.
It almost seems FT are having an indentity crisis. They have these sculpted, painted hip flaps, knees that continue the sculpt with added details, and then these horrible blocks of colour. They dont know they want it to be, and are tryimg to pander to toon purists without giving up their roots. Thus pleasing no one. The bot and alt modes are compromised for sure for the combine mode. Id maybe dust off your final catch phrase from Superion, you might need it.
I like it though. The mechanical details in the knee are "internal" and only exposed when the knee is bent, so it feels like something that could have existed in the cartoon but was just not shown in detail
Xtb's combined mode doesn't impress me so far from what they've shown; it's rather different from the cartoon. And given their reputation I'm not sure I'll trust them with making a solid combiner.
@@keyboardt8276 I prefer XTB but, I'm hesitant about it as well as it's XTB and they make some stupid design choices. Oh, since I was replying right before the end, I didn't hear Bobby's recommendation and it's exactly the reason I bought FT as it'll be the Devastator I'm wanting but, XTB will be the robots and alt and I'm hoping they do a good job of it as I'm getting their toy version, which I like more.
There's not a lot to like here. The kickstand looks weird and out of place, like it's from a different toy, the sacrifices made to size-change the shovel make it look like a dog chewed on it, and the lack of detail on the figure this size makes it look like an OS KO. This is... too much toon accuracy. Like, the important detail is that scrapper his his shovel behind his head, not that it looks the exact size and shape as whatever frame of the cartoon. They added a lot of complexity for nothing here. Less than nothing actually, since it makes the altmode look so bad.
6:02 nuggets I remember seeing the video teasing these guys' release and I did not feel a drip of excitement. Gen Toy and Toy World just nocked it out the park in my opinion. Both look more interesting than this.
I think figure doesn’t look good to me, don’t know how much they could have done differently it just looks like a panel join mess mixed with the almost detail less large flat surfaces. Very weird look, that said I think the constructions are probably one of the hardest designs to make good figures of.
I never thought I'd say this about a FansToys figure but... MEH! Easy pass for me. I'm happy with my Constructor. I am looking for a good set of Constructions for individual bot display. I guess I'll wait for MMC/Ocular Max offering. I love what MMC did with their Combaticons and what they are doing with their Protectobots. They have been nailing it with their individual bot looks. This FansToys Scrapper looks mediocre. 👎👎👎
I think it's one of the weakest offerings fantoys has given us, I do think his scale is off, he is too big for my liking and thick. (kinda resembles a prime ape of sorts with those propotions), and sure constructicons should be bigger bots, but I would say XTB nailed the scale. This guy is an easy pass on my constructicon team but as my Devastator, time will tell.
Yes, unnecessary random detail on the inner leg would bother me. The legs on this are perfect. This is the first MP Constructicon set I'm buying, in large part because it's the first set to not be covered in pointless greebling. That's not what the characters looked like. For a CHUG kind of thing, that's different, some creative liberty is often cool. But for the MPs? Match that character model and don't try to get clever. But do put a waist swivel on your $200 figure, I do agree that's ridiculous.
I think I figured out what FT is going for...Toon accurate bot mode, toy accurate alt mode. That alt mode really looks a lot like an upscaled version of the G1 toy.
But it's not toon accurate. Google him and you'll see. The combined mode is the best

I mean it’s obvious they sacrificed the waist swivel for a knee joint and ankle rocker for Devastator.
Hope to see a versus with this and XTBs version. Combined mode too. Ah the Devastator war is upon us.
I just can't unsee the screaming face on the chest now...
Or the Thomas the tank engine face at the front of the alt mode...
