David, When I first started watching you on PBS, I was amazed, at how you could use just one brush and paper towels and create a work of art. The way you include history and techniques is just icing on the cake. Ive learned so much from your techniques, I can watch a video over and over and still learn something new each time.
I love this and your series on PBS. You are so free with your strokes and can only hope to emulate your expertise. Thank you for posting here and hope you do more,
David! David! No one has ever answered, " When do you add the OIL" You answered the question " When you want the color to SIT UPON the colors already painted, not MIX IN" !!!! THANK YOU FOREVER!!!! annietime13
LOVE THIS! PLEASE PUT MORE VIDEOS ON YOU TUBE. I AM LEARNING SO MUCH FROM YOU AND APPRECIATE YOUR WILLINGNESS TO SHARE YOUR KNOWLEDGE AND TALENT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
amazing David, love this so much , also love the teaching you do to inform of the history of why and where it came from. your work is like magic to me, but know it is years of doing that counts.
You are so inspiring in your gestural approach with the big brush, the limited palet and a freedom of expression. Its just so beautifull and very inspiring to watch. Thank you for sharing. I just found your Channel now
HI, I am dipping my brush into refined linseed oil. I rarely ever use turpentine when oil painting..no need. This means you can paint in oil without the toxic effects of turpentine fumes. Best, David
Thank you, @34pat9art. What a lovely comment - we are so happy that you watched our program and wrote to us. We hope that you enjoy painting along with us! All the Best, David and Connie
Enjoyable to watch. Oils are my preferred media and I love the ocean so this is exactly my interest. The piece looked rather good considering the inclement conditions. Thanks for sharing this...
David, You inspired me so much with your painting tutorials. You are an excellent teacher. Your personality reminds me of the David Dunlap I went to school with in Springfield, Mass. When I saw your face I could not help but to smile. I seem to recognize you as a previous classmate. Thank you for your videos. Love also the history incorporated into your lessons. 🙂
Hi, cjxlisa - We are happy that you enjoyed it! We apologize for the very long delay in responding! Thank you very much for watching and for writing to us! All the best, Connie and David
Dear Alleynap - That is very funny - thank you for watching and for writing - and for your safety concerns! We are really happy that you enjoyed it! Good luck with your painting! Kind regards, David and Connie
Loved watching you work . I did not see easy, but rather years of dedicated study ,observation, and practice! I guess maybe you could be a genius. your gift is amazing. SANDRA
mil gracias por compartir sus conocimientos , es usted el mejor maestro del mundo y quiero decirle que estoy aprendiendo mucho con usted. gracias gracias gracias.soy kardea de san miguel allende gto. mexico
The final is magnificent... especially liked the brushwork at 5:32 & 5:47 (horizontal touches of light colors), the 'slooshing' at 7:12, the light spilling over the dark rocks at 9:01. Nicely done... hope you didn't lose any Schneider glass!
I love watching your videos! I purchased 3 of them, and watched them with a couple of my artist friends who also loved them. Your fan base is increasing! I have a summer place in Maine on the ocean, and I can't wait to try some plein air sketches. Thanks so much for your demonstrations--so instructive!
I watchedall your shows on create TV when you were or was it local PBS (?) and wish you were still on and I really miss your shows. You are a blast to watch and learn so much from you! This was a new show for me to watch and I really enjoyed it. Thanks!
Hi,cherie7896 - Thank you for watching and writing. We are really happy that you enjoyed it. We loved being on Winslow Homer's rocks and it was hilarious to paint in the rain! Good luck with your painting! Kind regards, David and Connie
I haven't read all 70+ comments so i might be repeating...but, I think you can substitute Burnt Sienna for the Iron Oxide. He refers to the open side and the closed side. The open side refers to the soft blended edge of the white paint that depicts the foam. The closed side refers to the sharp, hard edge where the white touches the rock. This is a very wonderful video. It all came together the moment he tore off the tape! If you measure the dimensions of the taped area correctly, you can create a painting that will fit perfectly into a standard Mat size. I must say, I rather liked what was created on the palette, too!
Thank you for your supportive comments. If you wish to see or learn more please go to my website. You Tube forbids my giving a webiste address in this reply form but, I can tell you that if you just go to my name Daviddunlop and follow that with dot com then you will find the website.
Hi, Felicia_m - Thank you for watching and writing. We are really happy that you enjoyed it! It was extremely fun and challenging to painting on Winslow Homer's rocks in the rain and mist! Good luck with your painting! Kind regards, David and Connie
Just happened upon your video by luck. Love your impressionistic style and your energy. I may have to go back to oil painting instead of watercolor! Great video!
Thank you for watching, Carla and Phil! We appreciate your kind words! The image will always just keep changing as you continue! Kind regards, David and Connie
Hi David I saw a video Where you interpret the technique of Homer one of my favorite artist of all ages. I’ll love to see it again but its not on TH-cam . Do you have any other page where it can be watched? Greetings from Puerto Rico.
Thank you for your comment! You can find the Winslow Homer PBS program in Season Two of Landscapes Through Time. It is available on as a set on my website here: www.paintingclass.net/pbs-dvds/season-two-landscapes-time-david-dunlop/. There is a longer version also, and it can be purchased individually here: www.paintingclass.net/pbs-dvds/special-edition-artist-length-version-of-season-two-of-landscapes-through-time-with-david-dunlop/ Best, David
Yes very inspiring! Loretta D. told me to look you up...so glad I did. Love the looseness of your work. Yet the accuracy in color, movement and texture is not lost. What kind of paper are you working with? Love to do plein aire...but work with canvas... Libby Z
I kept waiting for the ocean to rise up, and sweep you off the rocks. If I were there, I would have painted the lunatic artist, painting the angry sea. I'm sure you must have had people walking by thinking, what is this guy doing? Anything for art.
+Jamie McFarlane , No the weather was to wild for anyone to be out walking by.....Do you recall the story of Turner being tied to a ship mast to witness a storm.?
Hi David. I just found you and I am so amazed by your talent! Can not wait to watch all of your videos, this is my third. Learning a lot to apply. Can you tell me what surface you are painting on, it looks to be smooth. Thank you!
I see that David hasn't replied, so I will take a stab at an answer: He has taped or somehow affixed the paper that he is using as a palette onto the right half of a long board. ( There is disposable palette paper that you can buy, use and throw away ) My guess is that he is painting on canvas paper taped to the same board. You can buy canvas paper by the pad. Or perhaps he is just painting on a piece of regular canvas that he has gesso'd.
Fifteen minutes well spent! Sometimes the best things pop up when one doesn't try so blasted hard. I believe there is quite a bit to be said for impetuous painting. I love the piece. What type of material are you paining on I wonder?
I tried to go to your website but it gives me a warning message that the certificate has expired and that I risk being exposed to a site that is 'pretending' to be you. Can you fix this please so I can visit your site
Wow, you did a great fun job painting, even with wet glasses! Very positive attitude. I will look at more!

Great painting. You captured the beauty of the weather you had for the short time you had. Turner loved grey weather.

Yes I do. I also think of James Guthrie and the Glasgow Boys wandering around the Highlands. I still may paint your picture.
So talented with a minimum of strokes.

Sometimes even a painter can be victim, to risc a life in places that can be dangerous. Safety is important. Think twice before was too late.
