It takes a real man to put his pride aside and share his testimony!!! I really enjoyed your story! I’m the same age as factory and I love hearing stories from the 90s the best era in SX/MX best of luck in your future factory Phil!

Probably the best interview I've seen in this industry. Ping I really appreciate your gifts as an interviewer and person. I didn't know that much about Phil, because I was checked out of the moto scene to raise a family. What a great story of the power of God to touch lives and take a humble person and bless countless lives. Thank you, Phil, for humbly submitting your life to God and being a great witness to His love and grace. Love you guys!

It takes a real man to be vulnerable and lead with emotion when sitting face to face with one of your peers who you admire. Ping you are a class act, your progression and talent in this medium has been incredible to witness so far. Thank you both for an amazing interview, both of you are legends in my book, cheers guys.

Big ups to Phil to be man enough to keep it honest. Didn’t know factory Phil at all other than tv and mags, refreshing to see humility in a man.

Truly a bad dude on a motorcycle in his day. I was a bit shocked to hear how clean Phil was early on. I figured he was a partier all the way through. SO PUMPED to hear he got right with the Lord and is leading that life now. I know it’s humility but I’d like to tell him to hold his head high for the accomplishments during his racing years. He has a lot to be proud of and is selling himself quite short. Awesome show man. Love to see that connection at the end where two long time friends really show how they feel about one another.

Yep, best one yet IMHO Ping. Thanks. I hung out with Phil a bit in the 90's. I was always afraid to bring my girlfriends around for obvious reasons. To me back in the day, he was the cool guy and full of confidence. He had the coolest "smurf" Z71 and was cleaning house with the ladies...all the ladies. Very cool to see Ping get chocked up at the end with Phil's turn around.

OMG Randy! I grew up in Palm Springs and always took off from my garage out to the desert on anything that I could ride. Had an SL70 and then road my buddies YZ80 and I was always the fastest guy in the neighborhood. Fast forward some years at age 22 I finally had enough money to buy a year end 1984 CR250 for $1900. I went to Deanza race park (San Bernardino, CA) to see how that was and man was it an eye opener the difference between being out in the desert to a real race track. I struggled hard but after several trips out there I started figuring it out and I entered my first 250 beginner race on saturday and there was all kinds of chaos but i still won. Then the next day sunday i raced again and lapped the entire field. I went from there to novice to intermediate for several months till I blew my knee out. The end. But, within just a few short months of never riding a track, the track manager (cant remember his name) would time me during the week when I would practice and said i was running the previous weekends pro lap times. What could have been....

Wow! David you're right, that is an excellent observation by Phill. It would be very interesting if you were to take a deep dive into the broken home thing. Phil Lawrence ripped! I came from such a broken messed up life, I raced on weekends as Glenn Somerville and went to school as Glenn Martyn 6th-12th grade. I made many Mini O's podiums against legends... I would blow it on mental blunders. I was in the shadows of Vince DeVane & Ronnie Tichenor... I topped many legends, but I never got my local two just mentioned. Once almost in an open $ race at Dade City where I holeshot on a stock Cr125 and had the lead till last lap where Vince got me on back straight on his yz250. Guy Cooper got 3rd of 4th? So I won 1986 FL State Champ 125A... I got podium tt riding with an unknown Burst C1... so I made top 3-5 in mx motos before going numb and discovering I shouldn't be walking. I made it back but crushed my arch on some shit boots cause we couldn't afford much. So I was out again... so basically on couch after a good yr... even at ponca that summer I was doing really well in 125int seated 3rd in final moto to Denny Stephenson & Michael Craig... Final was a mudder... and I got taken out in first turn... I caught up from last to 3rd and might have won it... but I ceized on last lap... dnf'd... was pissed... so that fall I topped those two in Mini Os till I couldn't keep goin... a flagger was sleepin on a tripple in sx practice and I landed on a pille up... I beat Emig straight up a few times, LaRocco, M Brown, L Ward, K Lewis.... anyways I was on couch all of 87 and 2wks off couch and I maybe broke in this 88 Cagiva 125 about 2hrs... I went out to 88 Gatorback Winter Am and swept both 125A motos by half a lap... 30min motos... Then they took bike back... it was a fill in ride... so I got a kx but didn't have more than 2 wks on it... so I rode timid at Tampa 125 Pro esx...then 11th at Daytona a few weeks later feeling more dialed. I was about 5th w 2 laps to go... lapper landed on my back and I went back to 24th and caught back to 11th... they botched the record books... but I had the stupid oversized $400 chk. That was the last time I raced or used the name Glenn Somerville 798... I announced moto in Fl early 90's calling races with RC & Stewart... so that was fun... anyways... what your bro inlaw said about coming from a stable home matters a lot... so does having $ & Support... and a coach... I had none of that... if I could pull a John Dowd, I would... but I ran out of time... now I'm just an artist and fan... SunreaL bro!✌😎

I hope you parents out there heard the clear message of this episode loud and clear.
There is nothing impressive about being a Mom or a Dad. Having kids is about as difficult as ordering breakfast at Denny's.
Being a dedicated, responsible, married, loving Mother or Father to your children, who strives to lead and guide them, supervise them and hold both you and your children accountable, unfortunately these have become things that are really special.
You really don't want to create children that question their belief in themselves and their abilities, who become the same way as adults and spend their lives wondering why they lack confidence.
Then, after years and years of failing, soul-searching and resent, finding out.
