I was thinking about this the other day and had a feeling they would plummet, I also feel that the 3rd gen cards from that awkward early 2000s era is gonna be the next era most sought after especially as that generation of people get older and more money
Such a great time to be a collector these days. Stay away from the 300-1000$ alt arts , focus on good condition old school cards 🙌 great deals everywhere 😂
I'm a collector and I do care about quality. But I prefer pack fresh clean raw, I don't need a company or to pay a premium for some company to tell me the card is in good condition. Occasionally I'll pick up a slab if I really like the look of the slab. I also prefer slabs with a report, so TAG, ACE etc. Collect the card not the grade y'all.
Most PSA 8s and some PSA 9s are around the price of raw "near mint" cards, and they're generally in better shape. At the moment, if you mainly buy online, and you're not able to closely inspect cards before purchase, you're almost always better off buying graded. I've completed a handful of vintage 1st ed binders by cracking open PSA 7s and 8s.
I disagree, modern cards will be considered vintage by then and the artworks are better. They will increase due to inflation but won’t be a “boom” like we saw in 2020.
In another 20 years, anyone who cares about vintage will be 20 years older with new responsibilities , and any kids into Pokémon will see artwork that is 20 more years out of date. I agree, inflation will keep them at about the same but I doubt any growth without another world event.
@jakeparker8616 A lot of people are doing the same though. Not sure if anyone will be able to retire in 20 years when there’s still 60% of total printed sealed products in people’s closets.
Or our economy will crash and we'll be balling and crumpling the cards so that they're softer to wipe with 😅 never know. It's just printed cardstock after all.
Working on my own vintage collection, if there is some whitening or something like that I'll happily purchase it. But any big dents/bends will put me off. I don't intend to sell the collection but in 5 years time, I'd like to look back at it and I'm sure I'll be happier if they're in better condition
I was a kid in the 90s and I just love vintage, these cards are feelings and memories. Modern does not hit the same and the market is completely saturated with new products every other week…
Definitely still feel there’s a great opportunity in vintage it’s clear there’s a retrace but vintage will represent the roots of the hobby forever. Modern is just more relevant making it a “keeping up with the jones’ “ situation IMO. Even modern alt arts saw a huge dump at one point not long ago. Modern grails are also simply more affordable in psa 10 than vintage grails and that’s going to be a price barrier for many. Great video some things I would contest but it’s all very interesting to see how others think about the hobby. Good vid 😎
95 percent of people who collect Pokémon don’t grade though. They just want the cards. That 95% wants what is in front of them, modern. As more modern opens and less is available, modern cards rise in price. What is going to cause vintage to rise ? Another pandemic maybe? But no one wants that and if you are banking on it that’s kinda awful. As vintage gets older there are less people around who remember or care about it, the artwork gets better and better and the pool of people interested shrinks. There will always be a place for it, but alt arts are the ones that will be valued in 20 years by kids who can’t afford them now.
@@Theu131 😅 you literally just explained the reason why ppl will always want Vintage….you just said Alt Arts…😂😂😂 the same reason kids will want alt arts in 20 years is why vintage is still a thing bro. Lol
@@Theu131talking like the whole vintage is ken sugimori base set artworks is not only boring but shows your lack of knowledge. Secondly you don’t need to wait 20 years for prices to drop on cards that were printed to oblivion and all kept in pristine condition as there was already a huge market when they were printed, compared to cards that were significantly less printed, not protected at all by kids of that time and already had print issues from factory. Do modern collectors actually understand their shit is not rare or stupidity has become a standard ?
I don't meant to be rude, but I must disagree with all points here. You're saying vintage failed because people bought all the wrong stuff. No - they bought literally everything, and the entire market had a correction. Thus, everything [that was printed at the time] took a dip. Modern took a hit too. Shining fates charizard, the original poster child of "Modern is king," has been sitting at
Is it not a bit deceptive to compare average sales today to a single, exceptional, record-setting sale from 2020? Wouldn't comparing the average prices in each term give us a more accurate picture of how vintage cards have performed over the past few years? It's not as though most people bought, say, the 1st Ed Jolteon for $1150 -- that was one guy. Most people, even in the middle of the hype, were paying somewhere in the range of $350-500 for the card.
I just checked and some vintage cards ones I projected are getting harder to find almost disappearing from the market completely. If you thought things were getting cheaper you were dead wrong, some of you may back out but there is always another guy behind you ready to eat and complete their collection.
Yeah, I really disagree with all of this. Vintage is still up big from before covid. Its the new cards that will take a dump... Also calling a 7 junk is simply untrue. Some of the sets have 20x smaller print runs than todays cards and they are 20 years old... You think its tough taking a 2020+ out of a pack and grading it? Of course it will get a 9 or 10. Try having a card in a binder in an attic or garage for 20 years then grading it. That and you basically called the older collectors of Pokemon, novices. So untrue, Its the more established collectors in their mid 30s that grew up with Pokemon who are even buying the larger cards...
Absolutely agree on psa 7 not being junk that’s absolutely ridiculous take. If you want a collection of slabbed cards getting a 7 is much more affordable than the high and mighty psa 10 only people
7s can be fine as far as condition is concerned, but a 7 has never been a value add for any cards. You can generally get 7s for considerably less than raw "near mint" copies of the same card -- that's probably what's meant by the "junk" comment. That said, if you're just looking to fill out your collection with NM/LP cards, you can do so at a considerable discount if you buy 7s. I've cracked a number of 7s and 8s for binder collections. It's cheaper and more reliable (with respect to condition) than buying ungraded.
@@ReviewSalesmanDancracking graded cards open to put them in a binder is baller. I’m sure it’s more common than I realized but this is the first I’ve heard of it and it’s awesome.
It’s funny, when I came back to the hobby in 2021 I hated modern and loved vintage (due to nostalgia). However, now the nostalgia has worn off, the ‘appeal’ of older cards which are just holos is nowhere near the big modern cards. I think a lot of people feel the same hence the drops. Nothing beats 1999-2000 though!
I accidentally stumbled back into the hobby when McDonald’s put 25th anniversary cards into happy meals and my girlfriend brought one home to me. I proceeded to get two happy meals for lunch for like 2 weeks straight to get the cards thinking they would be worth a lot after the promotion ended. They currently aren’t worth much but it got me into going to card stores and buying packs and when I realized there was “alt arts” I bought a booster box of evolving skies when it first came out. Didn’t pull any alt arts in the whole damn box which made me start spending even more. Now I’m at a point where I can’t control myself if I see any sword and shield booster packs at a CVS or Walgreens 😂 they really reeled me back in like it was 1999.
Same, however vintage is still king to me, and still brings me so much nostalgia. The art was beautiful back then and still beautiful today. I don’t like a lot of the new cards because I haven’t kept up with Pokémon since sapphire and ruby came out, so I don’t even know any of the newer cards. Probably why I’m still crazy about 1st gen cards
Look at the pop of modern chases vs vintage chases, there is bound to be another spike for vintage but it’s not going to happen until modern becomes terrible
this is great... for someone like me. I still love to collect and play vintage formats. I was a kid in the 90s and I dont mind owning vintage cards that aren't pristine, I just love them. ive never and will never get into graded cards.
The important take away is that pokemon cards are well above where they were pre covid and don't appear to be going down. Tournament attendance is at an all time and the original collectors all have kids now. I anticipate the market to stay hot for at least another 5-7 years but truthfully with a new generation and older collectors coming back into the market it may stay high for a very long time.
The backbone of my collection and investing/grading efforts go to vintage. Sales are strong, and restock opportunities are indeed there, you just have to find them. It’s truly a buyer’s market with vintage right now, and things seem to be rather positive all around!
My entire life, I've collected what looks cool to me. That method has never let me down over the years. EVERYONE COLLECT WHAT YOU LIKE, chances are you are not the only one ;)
People think they will retire using sealed products from the current modern era know nothing about collecting and investing, the difference between current modern and current vintage is back in the day 99% of people didn't treat it as a collectible, we as kids played with cards, they got trashed and lost, right now Pokémon is printing insane amounts of cards like never before and everything is kept in perfect condition, there are massive sealed collections and the market will be flooded with products form this era. Vintage will always carry that value because is the beginning of the hobby and will be more scarce. Now it's a good time to buy because of this hype correction that didn't make sense. Go check the mid era, the prices are so low because nobody gives a damn about them, in 20 years nobody will give a fk about 99% of the cards from today because modern things will be the hot thing and what is modern today will just be another random set from 20 years ago.
I’m the exact person you’re talking about in this vid 😂. Did I overpay? Yes. Do I regret it? No. I crack open my binders and look at them all the time. Vintage will always be where this whole thing started. Eventually modern is going to take a dump just like vintage did. I’ve tried getting into the modern stuff but it doesn’t hit the same. I’m about to turn 30, and will hopefully be able to enjoy this stuff with my kids one day. I plan on finishing every wotc set while vintage is still low, because it will slowly rise as time goes on. Nothing will ever beat the originals
Glad I missed the 2020 Pokemon boom. I purchased an electric guitar instead and learned to play during those lockdowns. Today I'm finishing my childhood sets from late 90s. What a time to be alive.
I really enjoyed this analysis - thank you! The 2021 boom was certainly a wild time for Pokemon collecting and it’s interesting reviewing the cards that got swept up in the hype. In particular, I found the it interesting seeing the Electrode get completely over-hyped, and then settle much lower relative to the old, pre-boom highs compared to some of the 1st edition holo Rares you also looked at. While they still crashed, they held up a lot a better and for good reason! Thanks again 😊
This price correction wasn’t limited to pokemon vintage. People drove up prices for mtg, sports cards, comics, and everything in between in 2020 for both vintage and newer items. They all saw meteoric drops in prices once speculators pulled back. For vintage the key cards will be the most stable and liquid in the long run.
One day, today's modern will become tomorrow's "mid-era" and "vintage" cards. Once the newer shinier, cooler cards come around, will they suffer the same fate as today's vintage?
Same. I think the vintage has way less populations especially for the higher grades for like charizard 1st edition comparing to modern charizard psa 10 has thousands and thousands of pop. So I think by low pop and rareity from vintage will hold strong.
I finished Basic, Fossil, and Jungle back in 2010 (I was short 11 cards from my initial childhood collection) and the most I spent on a card was maybe $15. They were so cheap, I eventually started replacing my older worn cards just for the hell of it. I was 19 and got my first job - so why not complete my childhood dream? None of my cards are graded and most were used in deck shufflers and enjoyed by a small child. Adults ruin everything by overhyping this nonsense which always leads to a correction in the market anyway. I have to admit, the whole nostalgia industry has worn out its welcome. We talk more about the 90s nowadays then we did in the actual 90s. There are no more "Remember when..." moments because everyone now remembers and makes content about everything. When the only people buying old Pokemon cards or 90s Batman toys or even vintage band tees are 30-40 year olds that are just in it to wheel and deal their "investments"...then it's time to tap out. Buy things to enjoy having them instead of over paying them then having to tell your sob story as you post a market place listing two years later. Every Facebook group is mostly just ads for people that always magically have these toys and cards for sale. Everyone is a salesman preaching about "how these are my absolute favorite cards/toys in MINT CONDITION but...I have to sell them." It stops being fun.
@@phillips.collectibles It seems like "collectors" don't know their history. All you have to do is look at the Comic Book crash in the 90s to see exactly where this nonsense was heading. I recently started taking an interest in old silver age Batman comics from the 60s because I never got into comics. Luckily, many of them aren't more than $30 because I buy usually grade 6 or lower then take them home and actually read them rather than be afraid to breathe on them.
Well I agree with most of the stuff you say... but when you show the pricecharts you should skip the covid era and still see that most of the cards you have shown 4 - 7xed if you compare price in 2017 and now which is still ridiculous. So calling it downfall of vintage is huge overstatement imho. It is downfall only for stupid fomoers who came in 2019 and 2020 and felt like pokemon is going to the moon for eternity. For long term collectors/holders the cards still made huge profit even if they would totally skip the covid era and tried to sell them now. But truth is that i can imagine the vintage getting even lower than it is now. So we will see.
Honestly I think buying anything below PSA 10 for modern (maybe a 9 simply as an expensive case to hold your cards for PC), isn’t worth it. When it comes to vintage, I think people are just realizing that anything PSA 8 and below isn’t worth it, and the overall value of the cards went down because it was “buy anything” before, and now it’s “buy what is rarer and more unique.” In the long run vintage 8’s and above will do well, but anything below that likely won’t hold up. The best long run play is finding holos, ex’s, gold stars, etc., in 8’s and above of POPULAR Pokémon. We still have some years before vintage goes up again, but it will happen.
Na psa 8-9s are where its at, same price as raw or less and you know you're guaranteed to get a card in good condition where as raw im gambling a bit on the condition if i order online. i crack the slabs anyway because grading is dumb
@@Sreavis38 you totally countered your own point. You started with “PSA 8 and 9s are where it’s at” and ended with “grading is dumb I crack the slabs anyways.” I have bought plenty of raw cards that were then graded in 9-10’s. So if anything, you’re just adding an extra step for yourself. Just buy raw if you don’t like graded cards…
@@THExBLAZEx88 im saying buying raw online is risky, so id rather buy an 8-9 slab for the same price or cheaper than raw and crack it so i dont end up with something scratched or dented, you cant always see that stuff in pictures
@@Sreavis38 I hear ya, but if you’re buying from eBay, you’ve got buyer protection if it’s not NM (PSA 8,9, or 10 worthy). And I’ve also bought plenty of singles from eBay that I graded at 9 or 10. Rarely if ever do I have a quality issue I can’t spot in the pictures. Idk if it’s a valid argument to take the extra step to crack it and possibly damage it in the process. Just seems like that’s an over complicated way of getting a binder card, considering you’re not grading them anyways. I think you’d be better off just buying them raw from a 100% feedback seller.
Pretty simple, vintage is popular among the old heads like myself that had them as a kid. Side by side modern artwork is superior to vintage. Its also cheaper and can be had in mint condition. A modern alt art Gengar is superior to a Fossil Gengar. I love a classic but if you were looking at a display case no question which catches your eye more. Its all about preference but I know young collectors have no interest in vintage at all.
You would be surprised my friend. I ran into a Dad and his young son, i would guess 8 years old. And he told me he dreams of opening base set era packs to chase Charizard and fossil dragonite. The young kids are watching the old heads rip packs on their TH-cam channels so its rubbing off on the young generation as well. @phillips.collectibles
@@mmatthewdavey5704 interesting. everytime I'm around young kids they love to rip Pokemon Go and Darkness Ablaze lol. The most random stuff. Idk why anyone would open a vintage pack. The high sure, but when you can buy the card for cheaper than a pack or the every card is lower than the pack but one, whats the point. I've been to monthly trade events this year and just about all the kids like swsd pokemon. Not a single kid liked trainer cards. so maybe thats something that fades away in the future idk.
I'm 30 so I grew up with vintage in the playground. No interest in collecting it. Much rather collect interesting full arts and chase cards from modern.
They are simply too expensive. When my evolving skies/chilling reign sealed collection reaches a certain point I do plan on selling some of it to get myself a very nice vintage card though. Still on the look out for some vintage packs as well.
over time, the cards will increase in value. This is a correction due to a bubble crash, but over time, it will increase. Question is how much and is it worth the wait.
Vintage is still solid. I didn’t even collect in 2020…probably should have sold some of my biggest cards back then but I didn’t..they’re still very valuable and highly desired. It is a good time to buy vintage!
I agree with the mindset shift, but I don't understand this price fall. I got back into collecting graded vintage in early 2023, and my collection value is UP like 45% in value. But vintage, in the long term, will always be more valuable. Yah you can buy and flip the newest Ferrari, but classic Ferrari's are always more valuable.
Part of the thrill of collecting is the rarity. In pokemon cards, due to the global demand, rarity and price go hand in hand. Vintage PSA 10s will remain high due to scarcity and those higher grades will attract investors and collectors. People are more aware of grading nowadays so lot of modern cards are sent for grading straight out the pack. As a collector myself, I think I'd rather have PSA 10 modern cards compared to PSA6 vintage. I could build a nice modern PSA 10 collection on an affordable budget knowing as well there is potential for them to mature... rather than bang average PSA vintage grades knowing that there will always be higher grades out there
I appreciate the nostalgia that vintage gives me, but I think the modern cards just look better. We're literally comparing holos to alternate arts and illustration rares and secrect illustration rares.
This is kind of a clueless take. You said 1st ed shadowless cards graded in psa 5 and 6 are "junk" while you are comparing to one short time during covid?? These shadowless 1st ed base cards are always going to be fire. These cards are still 5x where they were pre 2018. Like saying a "psa 7" is junk is so crazy. Its still a respectable card esepcially for wotc 1st ed chase cards etc
Man. Australian eBay is not even the same market as the one we're using in the states. UK and Australian prices are in such a unique bubble price wise.
I more recently got back into collecting pokemon cards and I definitely have fomo over sets like evolving skies and missing out on some of those legendary cards. But this video gives me hope that I may be able to collect those cards for a fair price eventually
I understand most of your videos are for the investor, but when you say PSA 6-7 are junk, to some people that makes them perfectly happy! Especially when a 9-10 is $1000 of dollars but a 6-7 is 1/3 that price
Everything goes in cycles. Now is a great time to buy vintage and sell modern. 2025 will be a loading year for vintage and 2026 pokemon will push the nostalgia button for the 30th anniversary.
This is a great video man. But sorta as you were mentioning, let’s not think that collectors and investors are the same people…. Very different mindsets
It’s definitely had the dust settle and land at their more realistic post boom prices for a lot of vintage, particularly PSA/BGS 9 and 10s. They also definitely seem like safe collecting (not investing) options at the moment as there isn’t the volitility of the modern alt art market. There also won’t be any low pop chase cards like the vintage era as even alt arts are in the thousands at psa 10s. There could be movement at 30 year anniversary slightly but it is just good to enjoy the vintage cards and at least enjoy modern alts bringing the thrill of the hobby to new collectors and modern day.
Vintage is finally in a price range I can start collecting it. Just got THE neo lugia for $60 at my local card shop. Damaged condition, but literally only 1 little crease near the top of the card, the foil itself is otherwise flawless and even the back of the card is beautiful. The guy who checked me out at the counter told me I was very lucky and that if it had been him who’d priced the card it would’ve been much higher
Not bad and congrats! as long as you can live with it who cares what anyone else thinks. Damage/heavily played is a great market because there is always wiggle room for pricing and I always recommend for collectors to start there.
@ Yeah it’s awesome, same with moderately played. I’ve found a lot of good deals on MP cards that in my opinion lean more to LP. Some end up being a little rough but everyone’s definition of these conditions is different so you just gotta find sellers with high standards.
I agree with you on fomo on alt art cards but alt arts are also way harder to pull than vintage holos and they look way better so I do think that in 20 years alt arts will be extremely sought after
Your channel has been excellent guidance and thanks for putting out calm and collected videos! I'm part of the 90's kid group buying vintage for myself now at early 30s. Didn't catch the craze during covid, but the classic story of 151 pulled me back in. I was never into grading and/or buying slabs, always felt unnecessary and scam-ish by companies just creating an artificial product/demand to sell and market. I also prefer the raw card in a binder, in-hand, or in a toploader storage. Thankfully didn't get caught up during the covid craze as I would definitely be upset if my then purchases' value plummeted so hard to today's numbers. That being said, my vintage buys I mostly just pay attention to condition - I tend to buy minimum LP, and NM when the price difference isn't massive percentage-wise. As I see it, the boat has sailed in treating vintage as investments, and their price won't be jumping massively any time soon. I also got a bit involved in the investing side of collecting - booster boxes, PC ETBs, etc. which also led to purchasing some 9 and 10 slabs of modern SWSH for speculation which have definitely paid off. Though it was interesting, the first slabs I bought my first thoughts was along the lines of, dang, the slabs are kinda nice. Modern does feel way nicer in comparison, but I need tho vintages for collecting.. I've been buying 1-2 copies of vintage to collect and possibly sell the second, 2-4 copies of modern for collecting, and re-selling.
It’s so interesting thinking about what the future holds for the hobby. I appreciate how you bring up data and facts without speculating. It’s refreshing to get information like that and not have opinions put on the viewer so thank you for that 👍 even if you state your own opinions I’d love to see if the first edition Zard becomes the micky mantle of 2050. Selling for over a million dollars in PSA 10 etc etc. it’ll be super interesting to see, but also the experience of opening sealed product continues to be the crux of the hobby. These boxes of sword and shield/scarlet and violet could definitely be what people focus on in that time frame because they want to relive their childhood of opening them nowadays. It’s just fun thinking about it Keep up the great content! Loving every video!
I’ve been using this correction to pick up a decent amount of vintage I wanted, picking up a lot of ex era cards and vintage yugioh since the yugioh vintage market isn’t as hot as usual
Theres too much vintage supply thats the problem. Lc p&d prime neo e series have limited print therefore those vintage cards will have value. Is someone willing to keep cards for 20 years then yes u will see your cards be worth millions
I had a huge binder with probably at least 90% of all the original cards in a closet at my mothers I made the mistake of showing my brothers girlfriends son the cards and at a different time he told my mother I said he could have the collection along with my old Game Boy SP and game collection.. when I returned for them to gift to a younger kid I found they were all missing, my brother is no longer with his girlfriend, I’ll never see that stuff again, little bastard lol
Lmao it's like the old tale of never tell where you do your midnight gardening. It can honestly happened to anyone tbh without protection your "friend" or sibling can see your collection and next day your house is robbed at a perfect time. Never tell anyone regardless unless you are prepared to lose and defend it.
Modern will be vintage some day and they will always be someone’s favourite card, so i say just collect what you love and enjoy it and share it and maybe one day you’ll wanna part with some of it and will be worth something if you look after it. Love the videos, i always watch them, sometimes even more than twice 😂
lol first time i was smart, sold a bunch of cards i got as a kid that were good quailty. i saw the prices going up and up. made some money and left. i still have a load it just got to time consuming dealing with ebay selling them. i might unload them at some point but im shocked how people thought crazy 2-3x price increases an mania would last. even if not worth a ton the art on them is so cool
Bottom signal. I will send all the PSA 10 modern cards you want for your PSA 5 trophy and 1st ed base cards. The assertion that quality trumps scarcity vs simply being a reflection of a different category of mania is ironic given the selective dunking on people paying high prices during a different period of mania. Like the content. Like modern era of cards a lot. Weird takes on this particular video though.
Unless the card is a trophy card, only buy PSA 10. Yes, this includes vintage. If you cannot afford vintage 10s, possibly do 9s but the growth will be much slower. Generally don't buy if you like money.
Good because I need to finish out a lot of holos in all of my Original and Neo Series sets. Then hopefully move on to e-Card and EX Series. Can't wait to see where the hobby goes next 😅

Shining fates charizard, the original poster child of "Modern is king," has been sitting at
Great response, laid out far more eloquently than I'd be able to. Appreciate you re-introducing a lot of the context missing from the video.

I think this is the heart of it. Though the tide will one day turn
Grew up opening vintage. Felt the same way vintage gave me alot of nostalgia but the modern stuff is pure art
Vintage will always be king. No matter how much people try to say modern is better. Lol
Look at the pop of modern chases vs vintage chases, there is bound to be another spike for vintage but it’s not going to happen until modern becomes terrible
There's a good chance you’re right with this. Pop reports are less in moderns favour
I think this grading hype will die in the coming years. It’s not worth paying twice the price for a 10 than a 9
Perhaps people don't value themselves so they value their ability to spend money.
*Quadruple
I buy cgc 10 for a fraction of the price of a Psa and I’m very content with that. I’ve been cleaning up high end cards this way.
Man you really went in depth! That’s why I love your channel. Great work man
I appreciate that!
what website do you use to track price's?
this is great... for someone like me. I still love to collect and play vintage formats. I was a kid in the 90s and I dont mind owning vintage cards that aren't pristine, I just love them. ive never and will never get into graded cards.
Remember, every card has 100's of thousands if not millions printed.
Not exactly vintage on PSA 9 or 10.
It is very much a buyers market! You may have just inspired my next future video!
Do you think psa 10 vintages will come down further?
A lot of those cards are still up 300 or 400% in less than 10 years. Thats a pretty incredible investment depending on when people bought in.
Facts
My entire life, I've collected what looks cool to me. That method has never let me down over the years. EVERYONE COLLECT WHAT YOU LIKE, chances are you are not the only one ;)
tbh modern day pokemon cards looks like digimon cards from back in the days.
They definitely have some similarities
Hi can I ask where you get the pricing historical trend data? I'd love to take a look at some more cards. Thanks!
I believe he said from the psa website
PSA
And this is not a crash, is a correction, 2 different things
I’m the exact person you’re talking about in this vid 😂. Did I overpay? Yes. Do I regret it? No. I crack open my binders and look at them all the time. Vintage will always be where this whole thing started. Eventually modern is going to take a dump just like vintage did. I’ve tried getting into the modern stuff but it doesn’t hit the same. I’m about to turn 30, and will hopefully be able to enjoy this stuff with my kids one day. I plan on finishing every wotc set while vintage is still low, because it will slowly rise as time goes on. Nothing will ever beat the originals
Lugia psa 7 using your example is up 10x from pre boom. How is that a bad sign?
Glad I missed the 2020 Pokemon boom. I purchased an electric guitar instead and learned to play during those lockdowns. Today I'm finishing my childhood sets from late 90s. What a time to be alive.
Vintage cards will be views like 52 topps and 33 Goudy In 20 years
I really enjoyed this analysis - thank you!
Well said! And definitely a lot of prices held up well!
Jolteon is still selling for $300 more than it was in 2017....
How much was it going for in 2021?
This price correction wasn’t limited to pokemon vintage. People drove up prices for mtg, sports cards, comics, and everything in between in 2020 for both vintage and newer items. They all saw meteoric drops in prices once speculators pulled back. For vintage the key cards will be the most stable and liquid in the long run.
$2k is not worth buying
Hey what website did you use for the prices?
PSA
One day, today's modern will become tomorrow's "mid-era" and "vintage" cards. Once the newer shinier, cooler cards come around, will they suffer the same fate as today's vintage?
There's definitely a possibility for this
May I know what is the price index you are using? thx
You call it a crash, i call it a opportunity 😎 going to be stacking on vintage stuff for a while
Same!
Same they are the og cards
I have a huge collection of these that I think I'm going to hold onto and sell later. Value will come back. Always does
@@danirocket21611 yup
This was beautifully well written and a fantastic point. I never thought about that.
Thanks for this incredible insight!
@@phillips.collectibles
It seems like "collectors" don't know their history.
Good read
Fair point! That's true they have had a price increase even after the 2020 boom
Great point. 10s for modern definitely seem like the smartest move.
Where do you get the pricing charts from?
This is from PSA
What website do you use to look at this price history? I find it very intriguing seeing what some cards cost before the hype
This is directly from PSA.
The tide may turn in a few years though
Why would it turn? Vintage pokemon's artwork isn't magically going to get better and kids show very little to no interest in it.
We all love vintage. They are the original after all
idk for vintage psa 7/8s usually see the most sales volume in more common sets, I wouldn't consider them junk
over time, the cards will increase in value. This is a correction due to a bubble crash, but over time, it will increase. Question is how much and is it worth the wait.
and we are probably reaching a point of another crowded trade where people just buy PSA10 pristine everything and forget about raws and vintage again
We will need to see though you do make a good point. Time will tell.
Honestly i dont see PSA 7 as a "junk slab" 5 yea but 7 is still a pretty well conditioned card.
Rampant consumerism is always gonna be popular.
Thank you for explaining it man. I'm new to this hobby and I always wonder why some of the vintage cards got cheap now. Now I know
No Problem!
I could build a nice modern PSA 10 collection on an affordable budget knowing as well there is potential for them to mature... rather than bang average PSA vintage grades knowing that there will always be higher grades out there
Theres an old song it goes, you gotttttaa know when to hold ‘em know when to sell em and know when to run
Perfectly said. Know when to hold, know when to fold
I appreciate the nostalgia that vintage gives me, but I think the modern cards just look better. We're literally comparing holos to alternate arts and illustration rares and secrect illustration rares.
It’s a very hard comparison given that these new full arts have had decades to evolve.
No. Simple ever will be better
1st editions will always be 1st editions for any collector, regardless of artwork.
Low pop vintage cards are still going up, as are psa 10 copies
since when is a psa 7 junk? That's still NM condition.
I kinda regret not selling some of my older cards during the hype era
Yeah I feel that
Never judge the value of anything by the highest price one sold for.
For sure. Though it's still reflective of the era when it sold.
Man. Australian eBay is not even the same market as the one we're using in the states. UK and Australian prices are in such a unique bubble price wise.
It was a bubble, and it’s still a bubble
I more recently got back into collecting pokemon cards and I definitely have fomo over sets like evolving skies and missing out on some of those legendary cards. But this video gives me hope that I may be able to collect those cards for a fair price eventually
One day when the dust settles
Prices are still higher than before the boom. These cards will eventually go up again as long as Pokémon stays popular.
I understand most of your videos are for the investor, but when you say PSA 6-7 are junk, to some people that makes them perfectly happy!
Especially when a 9-10 is $1000 of dollars but a 6-7 is 1/3 that price
The future is secret illustration rare cards.
Could very well be
Are these AUS$ or USD$?
USD!
6:50 I would ignore the extreme outliers, most likely someone buying from themselves to create hype
Everything goes in cycles. Now is a great time to buy vintage and sell modern. 2025 will be a loading year for vintage and 2026 pokemon will push the nostalgia button for the 30th anniversary.
You’re comparing top modern chase cards value risk vs vintage electrodes to determine value risk
This is a great video man. But sorta as you were mentioning, let’s not think that collectors and investors are the same people…. Very different mindsets
That Lugia was shocking. I actually talked about it with my partner.
So wild!
It’s refreshing to get information like that and not have opinions put on the viewer so thank you for that 👍 even if you state your own opinions
I’d love to see if the first edition Zard becomes the micky mantle of 2050. It’s just fun thinking about it
Keep up the great content! Loving every video!
I’ve been using this correction to pick up a decent amount of vintage I wanted, picking up a lot of ex era cards and vintage yugioh since the yugioh vintage market isn’t as hot as usual
I swear recently the price of vintage 1st editions (non-holos) has gone up… 🤔
He was wrong but generally some vintage sets haven't aged well.
Same thing is happening with mtg, either way I'm happy vintage prices being back to normal somewhat
Great time to buy
Love it, picked up a few to finish my sets
Great to hear! Nice job taking advantage of the market
Crash, or sale?
Just bought a OG Latios EX
Can't wait to see how this video ages :]
I have a PSA 10 electrode 1st edition 😢
PSA 10 value might hold a bit better
Can you do an analysis for Full art trainers?? I love your analysis and explanations for prices and good investment
I'll look into it. List me some you’d like me to cover
Modern will be vintage some day and they will always be someone’s favourite card, so i say just collect what you love and enjoy it and share it and maybe one day you’ll wanna part with some of it and will be worth something if you look after it. Love the videos, i always watch them, sometimes even more than twice 😂
This guy is right though condition is EVERYTHING. I TRY TO COLLECT CARDS that don't have the white spots that come from opening packs
lol first time i was smart, sold a bunch of cards i got as a kid that were good quailty. i saw the prices going up and up. made some money and left. i still have a load it just got to time consuming dealing with ebay selling them. i might unload them at some point but im shocked how people thought crazy 2-3x price increases an mania would last. even if not worth a ton the art on them is so cool
You hit the nail on the head with this video.
Ya but $42 from $20 is probably the most accurate growth. And $120 to $700 just shows everything was over hyped and stuff is back to normal.
Unless the card is a trophy card, only buy PSA 10. Yes, this includes vintage. If you cannot afford vintage 10s, possibly do 9s but the growth will be much slower. Generally don't buy if you like money.
Well said I declined to buy a vintage card due to the condition it was in how ever I'm sure there are a few in mint condition still roaming around.
Good because I need to finish out a lot of holos in all of my Original and Neo Series sets. Then hopefully move on to e-Card and EX Series. Can't wait to see where the hobby goes next 😅
Right now is a good time to take advantage of that
