Vijay Prashad on BRICS & Why Global South Cooperation Is Key to Dismantling Unjust World Order

  • As a two-day BRICS summit gets underway in South Africa, we speak with author and analyst Vijay Prashad about whether the bloc - which comprises Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa - can meaningfully challenge U.S. and Western domination in world affairs by building an alternative forum for countries of the Global South. BRICS countries represent 40% of the world's population and a quarter of the world's economy, and the group is now considering a possible expansion to more than 20 other countries. "BRICS is an instrument to push forward their political views, which they feel are not taken seriously," says Prashad, director of the Tricontinental: Institute for Social Research. Prashad explains the history of BRICS and its New Development Bank and responds to criticism that BRICS falsely portrays itself as an anti-imperialist project. The BRICS countries "are not a socialist bloc," says Prashad, but they "don't want to do what the West tells them - they're driving their own agenda."

Had a similar conversation here recently. I think Vijay stopped coming on DN for a while because of something like this. but the way i see it, DN has always tried to have both sides of the argument. I think the rational is that the progressive side comes off better for the challenge. on that note it is one of the few "alternative" media that does this, (i.e not sticking to their camp alone). I think even among progressives that can lead to a buble, or at least a lack of traction with non-political viewers. anyways, that's my 2-cents, been seeing a lot of people criticizing DN for lately for something i feel they have always done. But perhaps they should be kept in check also ofc.. it is nice to see Vijay back here again in any case.

@@TKUA11 This is because the UN is used as a geopolitical cudgel by the US going back to Korea. If your standards of breaking the so-called rules is an unskeptical ahistorical assertion of invasion, I invite you to look at the continuity of blatant invasion and "regime change" history perpetrated by the US which led to such geopolitical reactions and includes Ukraine itself in 2004 _and_ 2014, culminating in the brazen invasion of Iraq killing at least a million Iraqis.
Iran in '53 overthrowing democratically elected Mossadegh to prevent nationalization of oil and installing the Shah, Guatemala in '54 to prevent democratically elected Arbenz from mild land redistribution, Sukarno in Indonesia putting in Suharto who would invade East Timor backed by the US, Lumumba in the Congo (hell, speaking of the UN, UN sec.gen.Dag Hammarskjöld's plane shot down at the request of the CIA using rogue Belgian mercenary pilot - Belgium of course having its stakes in the Congo since Leopold), the _first_ 9/11 in '73 overthrowing democratically elected Allende to put in Pinochet's military dictatorship, my god this is merely the _tip_ of the imperialist iceberg - and this is of course _besides_ the overt depravity of Korea (killing 20% of its population), Vietnam (including Cambodia, Laos as revealed by Pentagon Papers)...
As pointed out by Vijay in this very video, the US has positioned itself as the "consumer of last resort" at the end of the global supply chain to absorb inevitable overproduction of capitalism through cheap consumption or of course through our favorite activity of war/arms sales (military Keynesianism, the only button we can push at this point clearly), launching itself to hegemony post-WWII via imposing the Bretton-Woods international financial system with the US dollar as the "global reserve currency" using the leverage of being the only industrialized nation-state _not_ bombed to shit and taking the imperial baton from the British and their pound sterling.
NATO is an arms distribution network for the military industrial complex and essentially the public face of a European sphere of US domination, covertly enforced by a "strategy of tension" tactic of deliberately directed domestic terrorism seen in things like Operation Gladio in Italy (see: "years of lead", Aldo Moro assassination, Bologna bombings, etc.) with parallel operations in every NATO country where the CIA directed explicitly fascist paramilitary insurgencies ("stay-behind" armies, justified under a familiar appeal to a nonexistent manichean threat) to stoke public fear toward particular goals favorable to US corporate/finance capital and continued US hegemony. Its internally recognized geopolitical functionality as succinctly put by its first sec.gen Lord Ismay was to, _"keep the Americans in, the Germans down, and the Russians out"_ and hey, what a "coincidence", it appears to continue to enforce this state of affairs, at quite literally all costs - especially obvious when noting the industrial sabotage of Nord Stream II clearly perpetrated by the US against Germany (a callback to interwar Germany and its imposed separation by Western powers to prevent a socialist-aligned industrial base which the Bolsheviks were _explicitly_ counting on for the USSR project to have any chance at success).
Russia has long insisted on a halt to NATO expansion and the removal of weapons, troops, and war games from its borders -- the very thing the U.S. would demand if Russian missiles were in Canada and did demand when Soviet missiles were in Cuba (deescalated primarily by removing nuclear missile sites in Turkey). Nuclear apocalypse is the ultimate destination of endless escalation which thanks to the material interests staked in entrenching global bourgeoisie dictatorship over the global working class achieved under the pretext of the "cold" war (not very "cold" when, say, engulfed in napalm...) happens to be the raison d'être of the US natsec state since its inception; the divine right of "the market", the management of savagery, a means to no ends - where all possibility is strictly bound to profitability and everything and everyone, including the very planet itself, is for sale for the privatized profits of insatiable individual psychopaths who despite having everything only ever want more...

*5 Reasons why the BRICS currency will fail.*
      B) Nobody trusts Brasil economically because they keep flipping from radical Left to radical Right presidents. Despite some fairly decent development and technological advancements their main industries are soccer players and ripping down the Amazon rainforest for cattle to make McDonalds hamburgers.
      R) Nobody trusts Russia to do anything economically or much else. There main industries are resources and selling the worlds most popular form of population control - the AK47.
      I) Nobody trusts India economically because they are a giant basket case of corruption.
      C) Nobody trusts China and their economy is a bigger basket case that anyone else's and the environmental damage is disastrous. They have damaged or destroyed over around 30,000 rivers, creeks and waterways.
      S) Nobody trusts South Africa because they are so hopelessly corrupt.
BONUS REASON - The Bank of International Settlements which is the bank where all of our central banks settle out all the foreign currencies they hold reported in December 2022 that there are now over $100 Trillion in Foreign Exchange swaps being held by various banks and non-banking entities. A massive amount of that is not only in US$ but those US$ are held by NON-Americans who trade internationally in US$. *Does anyone actually think that all those people who have relied on the US$ for international trade for 70+ years are just going to swap 10s of Trillions into a currency run by the Brazilians, Russians, Indians, Chinese or South Africans when those countries have the issues they have?*

This control is used to prevent any effective usage of the credit. Borrowing countries get in trouble to return the credit and lose independence. The mechanism is perfect. Let's see what China will develop to get money back and to get something more than just money.

The frustrated idea of a Russian currency minted in South Africa traded by China and India with Brazil's help replacing the USD is laughable.

Thank you for the recap of the reasons what BRICS was suppose to add value to world order.
Sometimes the west has been painting BRICS from their perspective, saying it to dethrone USD or fighting against the West, so that we forget what the BRICS is really trying to achieve. Although there is a lot of truth to it now, it is trying to help the global south to actually build up their societies through infra / education etc, which is so fundamental to the future of these countries.

@@ClownCarCoup Once there appears competition in the arena, or an introduction of multipolarity instead of unipolarity, it undercuts the hegemonic grips of imperialism. People everywhere will now have options in regard to international affairs. If Coca cola doesn't taste good, try Pepsi or Dr. Pepper. Get it?
