    For everyone trying to export a transparent video and have it work in OBS I deleted the 2nd video track after creating the compound clip. Then in deliver used the "GoPro Cineform" codec, type "RGB 15-Bit", checked "Export Alpha" and it finally worked in OBS

      Not all programs support transparency, and not all support this exact format. This is the one I found is most widely applicable to Windows users but other settings may work better for your specific application. Transparency requires the Alpha channel so if this doesn't work for you, play around with the export until you find the format and encoder that work for your application.

    This was great, but not gonna lie, I've been searching everywhere for a way to use the clip outside of resolve as a stinger for OBS. This is a great way to make a clip while editing, and def gonna use your trick, but do you have an idea how to use it outside of resolve(rather than me lowering the resolution and creating a gif).

    • @videoeditingdiy
      @videoeditingdiy  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Fantastic question. I've struggled with this for my gaming streams as well. You have a few options. If you use a dual PC setup or have a beastly computer, just use the MOV file with the alpha. You can convert to a gif like you said, but I didn't like that option either. The best solution for me was to render them out the way listed here and convert to Webm format. There are a lot of online converters that do this, some of which are free. I have a lot of animated overlays that I host in StreamElements and inset as a browser source. I don't actually use stingers in my streams as I personally don't like them but if I recall, OBS does support webm as well. Give that a shot and see if it works.

    hi. great video. question. if i just do what you did at the beginning(go to composite and change to multiply) how can I export the video as a transparent background? as an example say I want to take the text with the video inside of it and put it on a webpage but i want a transparent background so that I have more flexibility as to where I can place it. Thanks...

    • @videoeditingdiy

      You can do it the same way. Ensure there is a transparent layer. You can use the background plus text the compound clip trick and export the way I did. The file size may be massive though.

    this is not quite what i am looking for - perhaps you can offer some insight:
    * start a brand new project at 1080p resolution
    * import media (an MP4 video) that is 1080p and add the clip to the timeline
    * transform the clips zoom to some value lower than 1.0 (let's say 0.5)
    * the background behind the clip is solid black, and it seems as though this is impossible to change
    is there any way to make that default solid black background be transparent? or is what i'm trying to do not possible with resolve?
    thanks!

    • @videoeditingdiy
      @videoeditingdiy  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Resolve doesn't show the checkerboard pattern to denote transparency. It always shows a black background in the edit page regardless of whether you are working with a transparent clip. If you want a different color to represent the background while you work, place a different solid color generator as the bottom most clip. The main point to remember is that transparency is handled at the point of export so black might be black at export, or black might be transparent. Transparency in general seems to be a point of contention so I'll make a follow-up video. I had something else planned for tomorrow but I may hop on to this instead if I have time to record a video this evening. Expect the video either tomorrow or next week depending on my schedule.

    Didn't work. I've spent two days trying to get this simple thing with a transparency to work and so far nothing's worked. mov files don't work at all. Either the video works and the audio doesn't, or the audio works and the video doesn't; the transparency never goes through; quicktime can't even read the .mov files strangely; and sends me to an empty webpage to download software that isn't there.

      If it isn't, then either the program you are trying to view it with doesn't support this format or you missed a step. Not all programs support transparency (alpha channel) and not all support the alpha with every video type. You may need to adjust the export settings to find what works best for your work. The important part is including the alpha channel on your export.
