My grandparents emigrated from Italy and Poland. In both cases, they were required to "renounce absolutely and entirely all allegiance and fidelity to any foreign prince, potentate, state, or sovereignty of whom or which at this time I am a subject or citizen." Of course, they were fleeing oppression by Mussolini and the Prussians, respectively, so renouncing any allegiance was a no-brainer. I have never understood the concept of dual citizenship. Clearly, you cannot have allegiance to two different countries. It can also be abused. I watch an old TV show called Border Security: Australia's Front Line. In one episode, there was an American woman who had previously been banned from the country, I think for overstaying a visa. So they caught her trying to sneak in again using her Greek passport. They only caught her because her Greek passport was issued just a week earlier.
