  • This is a one-way 9 mile dirt road up the mountain to the Alpine Visitor Center. Originally, the only road to Fall River Pass, and the first route over the Continental Divide until Trail Ridge Road was built in the early 1920s. It follows a route used for centuries by Indian hunters who came to Estes Park to hunt game.
There are no guard rails and the road is narrow and curved, but you do not need 4x4 to take this route as the road is well maintained.
It begins at the Endovalley Picnic Area and ends at the summit of Fall River Pass and the parking area for the Alpine Visitor Center at an elevation of 11,796 feet.
Timed Entry reservations are needed for visitors planning to visit Rocky Mountain National Park and drive over Trail Ridge Road to visit Alpine Visitor Center or into Grand Lake area. Downtown Grand Lake is worth a visit! Since this is a one way road, you can take Trail Ridge Road back to the west end of the park.

Great video and perfect timing. We have a RMNP entrance pass for next Tuesday with the plan to go over Trail Ridge, this will be even better as to do the loop up on Fall River and back on Trail Ridged.

Enjoy the day in the park! Both rides are fantastic and you get different perspectives going both ways since they are so different. Just go slow and you will do just fine. There are some ruts in the dirt road, but nothing that requires 4x4. Any normal car can make it through. And definitely stop at the waterfall on Old Fall River Road. There is a lot to do at the Alpine Visitor Center, too, so plan time to stop there.
