Yes, currently video backgrounds don't work for them. Even the airbnb has a static image :) I think this won't be long until this feature will be available on mobile devices, cause phones are getting so much better.
Nice tut but this is using a theme that you already have (from ithemes). Would be nice to know how to do from scratch (like, how to pull in an image as a background and place your call-to-actions buttons).

A long, long time ago I was creating websites. This was waaaaay back when Dreamweaver was "the" web design program. When I was asked to take over a non-profit organization's website that was created in Wordpress, I was baffled. I almost purchased a monthly membership with an online web design builder. If you want support/updates you can get it :) Unlike many tutorials which show you a free theme, but if you need support the only option you have is to hire a developer if you run into any problems, which cost a ton more ;)

I started using it for one of my local business sites (best one I've used) and found that everyone sells themes but never go into how to make a website using it. Hogan, Thanks for the extremely informative and descriptive tutorial! I think I'll use Themify for my next build. I do however want to make a point regarding your casual approach and advice about logos and how to 'get' one. I am a designer and brand specialist, and can only begin tell you how harmful that advice can be to someone who is starting a business. You stress how important it can be to have an appealing website, but then take such a lax position on the actual mark they will be using to represent their entire brand. A brand is formed by many facets and decisions, but the most integral part of a brand is the brand mark, or logo. I have sent countless cease and desist emails to people claiming to be designers on Fiverr who are trying to pass off my work as theirs. Sites that promote 'design contests' are considered speculative or 'spec' sites, which means that one artist gets paid for his or her efforts, and the other 30 do not. Do you get to sample 30 different dishes at a restaurant before you decide which one is best and will be paid for? It's bad for the design industry as well as the end client. Morals aside, the haphazard way people approach branding has alone caused tens of thousands of businesses to fail. People who are trying to win a contest don't know or try to understand your company and what will help it succeed; they try to throw a couple of cool designs out there as quickly as possible so they can move on to the next contest and maximize their chances of 'winning'. Essentially they are gambling with your image. The face of a business is no casual matter... You seem very thorough on many of your points, but I think you should take a brief moment to discuss just what should go into choosing a logo. Just as much, if not more than the time dedicated to the website.

A quick question, when working and on my website (on laptop) the font on my home page is fine but on mobile and tablet font is completely different? I don't know if anyone already commented on that here, but Wix is no longer based on Flash for quite some time now and their entire system (both the Editor and the live site) is based on HTML5. Plus, there is no problem with performing any SEO action on a site built with Wix and you won't loose anything just by having your site on their system. True, it's not the perfect website builder system, firstly because there isn't one. Sure, they have their share of disadvantages, BUT there are a lot of advantages and great features their system can provide to small to medium businesses. Basically, it comes down to the type of the business, its needs and nature. These will dictate the decision of choosing the most suitable website builder system.

I have two questions that I'd love some advice on: 1) No matter how I resize them, images on my blog posts are showing up as the same size and not how they appear on yours. Is there something I can do? Did I miss a setting change? 2) Updating the Ultra theme/Wordpress version makes me really nervous. Hogan, thank you so much for this incredible tutorial. I'm getting through it and creating my first ever web site. Question, when I go to Customise>Header>Header Wrap and I chose a colour (black with about 50% transparency) I can see the changes taking effect on my site as I do it. I press "Save & Publish" and it seems to save fine. I close to customiser and the Header Wrap colour change reverts to previous. I have tried deactivating all pluggins with no luck. Much appreciate yours or other learners help with this. Thanks!

I have a few questions 1. i changed the menu font color and chose to keep the menu as a 'sticky header', the problem is when scrolling down the font of the menu changes color to white and i cant figure out how to keep it the colors i picked. 2. I would like to include the logo in the footer (instead of the site title) without changing anything in the header (for some reason i managed to mess up the header title once, it seemed like a bug since the text was typing up&down.. anyway i've been very careful not to go there again since i had to redo a lot of work) 3. I see there is a new version of the ultra theme available however i don't see it is updated on your site... (1.2.7 is available now, on your site there is 1.1.4) also, when updating by the exporting option do i need to then import it after the update? seems a bit scary after hours of work... 4. any tips on backing up the site? Yes, currently video backgrounds don't work for them. Even the airbnb has a static image :) I think this won't be long until this feature will be available on mobile devices, cause phones are getting so much better.

Nice tut but this is using a theme that you already have (from ithemes). Would be nice to know how to do from scratch (like, how to pull in an image as a background and place your call-to-actions buttons).

If you want support/updates you can get it :) Unlike many tutorials which show you a free theme, but if you need support the only option you have is to hire a developer if you run into any problems, which cost a ton more ;)

I started using it for one of my local business sites (best one I've used) and found that everyone sells themes but never go into how to make a website using it. That's why I made it, not trying to get people to just buy it but rather trying to help those who were in the same place I was. Thanks for the extremely informative and descriptive tutorial! I think I'll use Themify for my next build.
I do however want to make a point regarding your casual approach and advice about logos and how to 'get' one. I am a designer and brand specialist, and can only begin tell you how harmful that advice can be to someone who is starting a business. You stress how important it can be to have an appealing website, but then take such a lax position on the actual mark they will be using to represent their entire brand.
A brand is formed by many facets and decisions, but the most integral part of a brand is the brand mark, or logo. I have sent countless cease and desist emails to people claiming to be designers on Fiverr who are trying to pass off my work as theirs. Sites that promote 'design contests' are considered speculative or 'spec' sites, which means that one artist gets paid for his or her efforts, and the other 30 do not. Do you get to sample 30 different dishes at a restaurant before you decide which one is best and will be paid for? It's bad for the design industry as well as the end client.
Morals aside, the haphazard way people approach branding has alone caused tens of thousands of businesses to fail. People who are trying to win a contest don't know or try to understand your company and what will help it succeed; they try to throw a couple of cool designs out there as quickly as possible so they can move on to the next contest and maximize their chances of 'winning'. Essentially they are gambling with your image.
The face of a business is no casual matter... You seem very thorough on many of your points, but I think you should take a brief moment to discuss just what should go into choosing a logo. Just as much, if not more than the time dedicated to the website.

A quick question, when working and on my website (on laptop) the font on my home page is fine but on mobile and tablet font is completely different? I don't know if anyone already commented on that here, but Wix is no longer based on Flash for quite some time now and their entire system (both the Editor and the live site) is based on HTML5. Plus, there is no problem with performing any SEO action on a site built with Wix and you won't loose anything just by having your site on their system.
True, it's not the perfect website builder system, firstly because there isn't one. Sure, they have their share of disadvantages, BUT there are a lot of advantages and great features their system can provide to small to medium businesses.
Basically, it comes down to the type of the business, its needs and nature. These will dictate the decision of choosing the most suitable website builder system.

1) No matter how I resize them, images on my blog posts are showing up as the same size and not how they appear on yours. Is there something I can do? Did I miss a setting change?

I toyed with a few different sizes, from 500X500 to whatever you cropped your images at in the tutorial, but they still show up as large as they are now.
+Alan Holley How big did you want it? Something like the shop thumbnail - hoganchua.com/blog/ ? I cropped that one to 1280x720 - so maybe you can try 720 x 480 px ? Or shoot me an email at creativeway10@gmail with your login details and I can test it out. I need some trial n error too :)

Hogan, thank you so much for this incredible tutorial. I'm getting through it and creating my first ever web site. Question, when I go to Customise>Header>Header Wrap and I chose a colour (black with about 50% transparency) I can see the changes taking effect on my site as I do it. I press "Save & Publish" and it seems to save fine. I close to customiser and the Header Wrap colour change reverts to previous. I have tried deactivating all pluggins with no luck. Much appreciate yours or other learners help with this. Thanks!

Excellent tutorial. I am extremely pleased with the final results. Only suggestion I have is perhaps to speak a little slower as you provide info. I actually put you on a lower speed so that I could follow along when I wasn't too sure of what I was doing. Other than that - I'm a faithful follower and Student. Thanks for sharing.

When after clicking the post and re-direct into the post page, we can see the information about the author, and also category information. 1) How can remove these information to get rid of this? 2) If I do remove them, how to change the font and its size, from new times roman to Roboto? Its late so I'm know going to crawl to bed as it's an early start and a busy day ahead. You are amazing. Keep up the good work.:-) ps only one problem is with the Mail Chimp plugin, it didn't have the image of the chimp but a pig so had to leave out that part. I have the same problem with the file extension rar not loading -will email you.

Thanks for the great tutorial! I have a few questions
1. i changed the menu font color and chose to keep the menu as a 'sticky header', the problem is when scrolling down the font of the menu changes color to white and i cant figure out how to keep it the colors i picked.
2. I would like to include the logo in the footer (instead of the site title) without changing anything in the header (for some reason i managed to mess up the header title once, it seemed like a bug since the text was typing up&down.. anyway i've been very careful not to go there again since i had to redo a lot of work)
3. I see there is a new version of the ultra theme available however i don't see it is updated on your site... (1.2.7 is available now, on your site there is 1.1.4) also, when updating by the exporting option do i need to then import it after the update? seems a bit scary after hours of work...
4. any tips on backing up the site?
