I kind of felt like a failure this May, someone closest to my heart passed away at the end of April and reading has always been my thing but I just couldn't enjoy it like normal in the May month. Plus finals and stressful things at school. I've tried to be kind to myself about it, but I still can't help but to feel upset with myself

"I really want to read all of Austen's works"
Sense and Sensibility is my FAVORITE Austen book!! I don't want to hype it up too much because at the end of the day it is an Austen book, and while I personally am a fan of her work she has a very distinct style that you either love, hate, or tolerate haha. Can't wait to hear what you have to say about it!

Piggybacking off of how you said short stories are like people-watching after talking about The Refugees - I'm reading Anne Lamott's Some Instructions on Writing and Life and she references Andre Dubus when talking about short stories: "I love short stories because *I believe they are the way we live* ...We can sit all night with our friend while he talks about the end of his marriage, and what we finally get is a collection of stories about passion, tenderness, misunderstanding, sorrow, money; those hours and days and moments when he was absolutely married, whether he and his wife were screaming at each other, or sulking around the house, or making love." SO, YES. I felt that so hard when you said *short stories are like people-watching!* That's why they can be so compelling because they feed off of our natural curiosity of everyday life. Can't wait to read The Refugees.

AH! I read The Maidens in May as well, and I adored it. I thought it was absolutely wonderful! I was like you, I kind of had an idea of the twist about 1/3 of the way in... and like right before the reveal I was like “it’s gonna be -“ and I squealed! Wasn’t it so atmospheric and fun and interesting.
Also - hope you’re doing well. I don’t comment much as I watch on the TV, but I know you recently mentioned having a rough time and I hope that’s lifting. 🌷

Favorite book I read in May was Amari and the Night Brothers, it was PHENOMENAL! My most anticipated book for the summer is The Chosen and the Beautiful.
