    What did Rome look like immediately after it was sacked for the first time in 800 years? Our virtual reconstruction will help with it
    On August 24, 410 CE, the Goths entered the City under the leadership of Alaric. The barbarians plundered Rome for several days, and then went to the south of Italy. The Eternal City of Rome was left to its sad fate...
    We will make a virtual journey, a walk through the Roman Forum. We will see how the appearance of buildings has changed, and what destruction has been caused.
    This is the first episode of a series dedicated to the history of the destruction of Rome. I want to make a series of videos that reflect the slow decline of the once great City over the centuries of the Dark Ages. We will see how temples, forums and theaters were gradually destroyed and rebuilt, and how, centuries later, a new, medieval Rome came to replace it.

    Sorry for misprint at 0:09 - Roma is a 'she', not 'he'. It's important to highlight.

      You should also correct the caption to, either "How it looked" or "What it looked like", rather than bundling the two expressions together.

    410 was not that terrible year if we compared to the sack of 455 by Vandals , in that year the city of Rome heavily damaged.🙁
    Thank you for your efforts.😍

    Wonderful, and very detailed work, absolutely excellent ! I see, you and me we share the same fascination with the transition of Rome from its peak in 320 AD to the decline of the middle ages. I am already looking forward to your next videos.

    Amazing as always. Very cool to see a depiction of Rome in 410, I don't believe that has been done before and it's very interesting to see. I did not know the Curia was burned too, so that's certainly interesting to learn about.
    Would be amazing to see more of this. I always wondered what Rome may have looked like, for example around Justinian's time, when the buildings (I believe) were still fairly intact structurally, but the city itself was completely empty.

    Rome was definitely the synonym of glory, even after a misfortune such as this sacking, it proved to be quite imposing and luxurious, even if less than before. Well, after all, marble is difficult to loot and goths should be more concerned with taking as many things as possible in the shortest possible time.

    • @historyin3d
      @historyin3d  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      yes, exactly. The lack of time determined the nature of the damage.

  • @septimiusseverus343
    @septimiusseverus343 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    Definately more of a hit and run raid than a full on sacking. Damage was limited, in addition to what you have described here, the area around the Salarian gate and the Gardens of Sallust were also damaged by fire. Alaric only sacked Rome when he had no other options. He couldn't secure an arrangement with the Roman authorities. He had to send a message to his allies and enemies that he meant business, and he really needed gold and supplies to sustain his people. The infrastructure, monuments, and general fabric of the city remained intact, and casualties were very low. The real damage was done to the population (it fell from 800,000 to 500,000 in a mass exodus, still a great number, but a definate dropoff) as well as the Roman psyche.
    The Vandal sack of 455 on the other hand, *really* started the decline.

    • @historyin3d
      @historyin3d  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thank you dear friend, although the Goths did sack the City horribly, we are nonetheless forced to admit that the buildings and monuments themselves were not deliberately destroyed, neither by the Goths nor by the Vandals, but by the inhabitants of Rome themselves, during the following thousand years. Which we will demonstrate in the next video.
      Cheers and looking forward to your new videos!

      Hmm, thank you, but don't think so. Flipped prof has a potential, but his models are so far of really basic quality. For example, his doric temples are rather good, but the recent basilica of Maxentius is very inaccurate and should be remodelled. Anyway, I really hope he will improve his skills, he can. I won't compare with my project, but I can refer you to other really great projects - Rome Reborn and Faber Courtial.

      I saw Rome Reborn, but technically their buildings are a bit elementary, between Rome Reborn and History 3D, you are better my favourite is History 3d! I didn't know Faber Courtial, I've seen many of his videos today, many effects but little consistency. For these reasons History 3d you, and Flipped Prof are my favorite brilliant artists!!! I think your works on Ancient Rome, and Flipped's Ancient Greece work are the most beautiful things ever created in 3D ancient history! Thanks so much for your incredible mission!@@historyin3d

    I am surprised that you do not look at the new Roman Capital at Constantinople, which made Rome, Italy look like a backwater. Plus I would like to see what Rome looked like when there were weeds growing in the streets. It wasn't until the Roman Byzantine Empire freed Rome, Italy from the barbarians, that Rome, was free again.

      Except the sack of 410 was more like a light raid if anything. It was Justinian's stupid Gothic wars that wrecked the ancient city and sent it into a tailspin from which it would never recover. 1204 almost seems like indirect karma.
