Fun fact about the hats in Western movies if you look at the businessmen and politicians who wear hats in the movies you'll see them wearing the bowler hats while cowboys/bandits wear the Stetsons and/or bandanas.
That always made me laugh. The cowboys wearing Stetsons was entirely marketing and has worked so well that Stetson is still riding on their name being used as the name for all cowboy hats. But if you look at historical photos you will find that fedoras, bowlers, and sombreros were the most commonly worn hats of the era. The overly wide brim of the “cowboy” hat made them impractical.
In one of my favorite college classes the prof made an observation that blew my mind. American obsession with both Westerns and Science-Fiction are born out of the "frontier-ism" tradition from which America came. It's right there in Star Trek's intro too, "Space, the final frontier." Fun stuff.
It's also probably a big part of why fantasy and sci-fi stories have become so popular over the years. The feeling of encountering the unknown, of there being stuff to explore and new sights to see, those are ingrained in human beings to our core. As the world has become more connected and less and less exists to explore, it makes sense that we'd engross ourselves in the thought of the older frontiers or in fictional new ones.
Can you imagine the embarrassment of the alein pilot in the Aurora, Texas incident? "Hello! Control! This is Probe 1! Have crashed landed on Alein planet!" "What brought you down Probe? Asteroid? Solar storm?" "Nah, I was flying too low and hit a windmill...."
What really seals the fate of the wild west not being as lawless as people think is that the there was a federal inquiry into the shootout at the OK Corral. The back and forth between the Earps and the Clantons had been going on for a while. The inquiry determined that while the Earps were justified in their use of force there were probably ways they could have deescalated the situation before it resulted in the incident.
