    Coming from 2021, and judging from the announced future projects, I can say Chinese donghua is entering the big leagues.

    They're just a few decades behind but they'll catch up. Russia and Germany were in the same pickle during the Iron curtain era until it finally came down. After that, it was nearly, and I'm stretching the nearly, easy picking to get their animation and movie works back on track.

    Nicely done. Are the side by sides of the western and Chinese animations from the same time?

    • @WooKong
      @WooKong  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yep all from the same years, except for the supersoap cartoon which actually came out a year after castle in the sky.

    • @ChristopherSobieniak
      @ChristopherSobieniak 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah that "Supersoap" short would make someone think it might've came from the 60's the way it's executed (I reminded myself of USSR's Soyuzmultfilm studios, which unlike China, started cultivating more mature, contemporary works starting in the 60's with animators like Fyodor Khtruk and Yuri Norstein. It's a shame Mao didn't see potential in animation during his final years).

      Yes, I am enjoying it and looking forward to the rest of season 5 and also check out 9 Songs of the Heavens which appears to be a prequel. Just have to wait for mooncakes to translate. Can you address why it's hard to get chinese and some Japanese anime here in the States?

    • @WooKong
      @WooKong  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sweet, I'll check it out when I get some time. My guess would be lack of awareness for certain series or just the fan base is too small to warrant an official translation or fan sub. It's a pitty, but it's the same with a lot of books and manga I have been waiting for ages to read a translated version of the series which inspired crouching tiger hidden dragon....

    Chinese animation has always been one of my fav subjects as well as the Shanghai Republican Period movies. I hope you have been to the China National Film Museum in Beijing where there are some of the original cells from the great projects of the 50's and 60's as well as the 80's. One thing I found fascinating, the nerd that I am, was the head of the snipe in 鹬蚌相争 (The Fight Between the Snipe and Clam 1983) was a separate piece of celluloid over the celluloid body so it could peck and cock its head to save time in redrawing cells. Go visit the museum there if you can. Maybe you can do something about the famed stars of the 20's and 30s.

    I love this kind of stuff too, and I've seen most of the animations shown here and I'll give the ones I haven't seen a watch sometime. My favorite types are the ones drawn in traditional painting style, because they usually have very beautiful animation and music and good stories. It's sad that the government stifled the artist's creativity during the cultural revolution, and tried to replace art with crappy propaganda. If I were one of them, I would've risked getting arrested by continuing to produce good quality cartoons while finding a clever way to poke fun at the Communists and spread the message of freedom at the same time; and then I'd try to save them from getting destroyed, and spread them all over the world. I may have this attitude because I'm American, but still even if I was Chinese I would do that if I was an animator that is.

    Very fascinating!
    It would seem that the cultural revolution had stagnated the progression of animation in China.
    I hope new artists are born in other countries so that the power house animators (Japan & USA) have competition.
    However with that being said, China is still a country full of censorship and propaganda, thus it will be difficult for a liberal artist with a liberal animation film to be present.
    Keep on coming with them videos son keep up the good work.

      There at least seems to be an interest in how to collaborate and commercialize it to some extent. That's how we ended up with Dreamworks' Chinese studio ("Oriental Dreamworks") or a Chinese graphic novel that was adapted into an animated feature a few years back (Rock Dog, albeit, not very successful), though that was animated by a studio in Texas. Such collaborations and outsource production pipelines seem to be trend that has gotten pretty extensive in later years, often these are made to ensure getting the film or series greenlit in China for having Chinese involvement on said production (much like the Canadian content rules governing programs made and aired in Canada).
      I think what really needs to happen is for someone to setup a studio that provides something of a shield behind any sort of restriction as long as artists felt appreciated to do their own thing. Something like a Zagreb Film (one of my favorite studios).
