I have a cool story about Pele actually, I’m only 20 and have never met him of course but back in 1958 when Pele won his first World Cup age 17 the World Cup was hosted by Sweden, the country I’m from. The host city was Stockholm but despite that the Brazil squad set up their camp outside of Gothenburg in a small village called Hindås. When the Brazil squad was out training in the summer the Hindås kids was out playing beside the field. The Brazilians and the kids quickly became friends. One of those the Brazilians befriended was a girl in which Pele later sent letters back and forth with every year up until his death. Stories like these seems to not exist anymore among top players and celebrities today, but Pele was different. Whilst he was the best player on the pitch and will be remembered by many as the goat he was probably an even better human off it. RIP Pele, you’ll always be remembered
what a cool story. I have heard that the Swedes, although they lost in the final against the Brazilians at home, never had more admiration for the magical football that they presented in that World Cup.
Greetings from Brazil, great video! You can't imagine what he was around here. It's like if you are Brazilian you just born knowing who is Pelé, and that why I will always say "after Pelé" when i hear someone saying that Messi or CR7 are the greats of all time
The incomparable king of football, could be born 100 Ronaldinho, Ronaldo, Cristiano Ronaldo, Messi, Neymar, Mbappé, Maradona, Cruyff, Beckenbauer, Romário, Platini, Garrincha, Zico, Sócrates, Zagalo, Didi, Dener, Rivelino, Di Stéfano, Luis Suárez, Omar Sivori, Josef Masopust, Lev Yashin, Denis Law, Gerd Müllero and Rivaldo what they did King Pelé had already done, in the past only the ball weighed 15kg dry, because if it got wet it was 50kg, the boot worse than a work boot, grass so it goes without saying, and yet the citizen lifted 3 world cups, jumped higher than a volleyball player, finished with both legs at the time when there was no yellow card or substitution on the field when football was violent, and scored 1,283 goals, they did not reach the feet of the eternal king of football, there were the aces the phenomena but within the geniuses King Pelé was something supernatural, a god of football, the best of all times the incomparable the eternal King Pelé.
The seismic and unique contribution that Pele dedicated to the game of football itself will never be equalled... his tangible love of the game transcended class, race, religion and nationality... he moved through these barriers as if they had never been there... for him they never were! He was the original rags to riches football superstar who inspired the game of professional football to the glorious heights most take for granted now... without him football would be... 'just another game'! He was and still is the greatest football player of all time who will never be surpassed... he is the original 'messiah of world football'... the greatest game on Earth! Nice 'double' tribute Luke... thanks!
A real legend who love football sincerely. Always has respect to anyone with his warm, friendly and down to earth personality though he could've be an arrogant with the all his achievement. Goodbye football legend. Rest in peace King O Rei.
Pele is the greatest. He retired 55 yeasr ago and he still is praised. You can ask great coaches tha played or saw him play and they will say that he was the greatest. Talent wise he is at the same level of Maradona and Messi. Physycally he was superior than them. And he also had a special creativity tha was superior, he imagined plays and executed them. All the magic that we see great players do...he did all of the long time ago. Also he was a gentleman without a blemish. I fell in love with him when I was 5 and saw him take the WC in 1970, pure magic. As they say in Brazil.. JOGO BONITO.......Thanks O REI.
The number 10 was just a number until Pele, and he turned the game to the beautiful game. Most modern moves today were done by Pele. He did the rainbow and bicycle kick moves when no one else was to a degree that changed the way we play the game. Moves like the Pele Runaround (th-cam.com/video/-UzRsvCsC4c/w-d-xo.html), and the no look pass to the player running behind him gave meaning to instinct in this sport. He changed the sport and gave it back to the world. Only player to win a world cup in three different decades. The King
Puskás first wore the number 10 regularly as team captain. He and Pele had a lot of respect for each other, and Pele said that he chose the number 10 because he saw it on Puskás, when he was younger
In the 50,s and 60's you could argue that the best club football was played in south america. The brazilian league was full of excelent players, adn you also had neighbours Argentina and uruguay with players with God given talent. So staying to play in Brasil cant be considered a blemish for Pele. The Copa Libertadores (S Americas champions league) was full of talente and also was like a war zone, it was very violent.
The European thing is hilarious because Santos toured England Italy and West Germany over several seasons. He scored 167 goals in 130 matches against European clubs according to the English FA.
Bright, honest and concise video. You must have seen the electronic version created for, perhaps, the best (most beautiful) goal by Pelé against Juventos. It was a rainy day and the field was heavy, muddy. A few minutes before doing that wonder, Pelé "missed" a goal by a few centimeters and the opposing crowd did not skimp on the boos. Pelé looked at them and made a "wait a minute" gesture. After scoring this beautiful goal, with the ball under his arm, he turned to the crowd and there was a standing ovation for several minutes. I was lucky to be there... Thanks for the video and for your oppinion.
Thank you for this reaction, it is so important for new generations to know where all this Football greatness came from. It was very nice to see players from all over the world sending their wishes for Pele's recovery, as well as, to watch the choreography made by drones as a tribute to the king in the sky of Doha (capital of Qatar). The drones showed the mythical shirt with the 10 and the phrase "Pelé, get well soon". Also Pele's face made of lights on Doha building with the same phrase. I am happy he was able to enjoy this last World Cup even though it was from the hospital from where he saw so much love, respect and worldwide recognition to him. I used to checked his instagram to read his comments about the World Cup he posted daily. Pele is unrepeatable. LONG LIVE THE KING!!!
It doesn’t matter who shows up and who becomes better then pele (in this case now Messi) pele will remain as an untouchable figure in football. His importance in the game will always be huge. He is the first goat and no one will take that away from him. Because let’s be honest Goats come and go but they will always be goats. And I don’t know how many years there will be another goat other then messi. But players like pele will always be on that level of greatness
During Pele's era, there was no gap between South American and European leagues at any level...Most South American players played in South America and still dominated international competitions..

"The difficult thing, the extraordinary thing, is not scoring a thousand goals, as Pelé did. It's scoring a single goal like Pelé. That goal that we would like so much to score, that we feel ripe to do, but which, devilishly, don't let yourself be done. The goal." Carlos Drummond de Andrade, brazilian poet
He was a special player. He had no rival ... No one to be compared with. On and off the fields was best ambassador to the sports. His humility is something else. RIP the King of football.
The NASL of the 1970s was amazing. Something you might not have learned yet...soccer pitches can vary wildly in size. On the small end, they can be 100 yards long by 50 yards wide. (5000 sq yards) At the large end, they can be 120 yards long by 100 yards wide. (12,000 sq yards). Most NASL games were played in American Football stadiums and thus closer to the small end in size. THIS allowed some of your 35+ year old retired international superstars to come out of retirement and play here. They wouldn't have to run as much on the smaller pitches. You had some *VERY* skilled pleyers on the pitch. As a kid I got to see Pele play against my Tampa Bay Rowdies squad. Unfortunately the NASL shot themselves in the foot by imposing regulations mandating teams have "x" many American born players on the field...and the quality went down.
You're right, he won the WC in Sweden 1958, 8 years after Brazil lost to Uruguay, for some reason the voiceover in the film at 4.00 said 14 years later. Also South American leagues were in no way inferior in Pele's day as South American teams regularly won the Intercontinental Cup, the forerunner of today's World Club Cup, which was held only between the European and South American champions back in the day. In fact South American teams more than held their own before the cream of their talent began to come to Europe in huge numbers since the 1990s.
I know you like all kind of sports, so I recommend you see some videos about Ayrton Senna F1 pilot. He is to Brazil as much as hero as Pelé. Strongly recommend you to know his history, and how Ayrton impact the sport over the speedway!
I dunno, an American suggesting that the king is above criticism is kinda weird. He's not perfect. He's still the GOAT, but never playing around the world for a club is a valid criticism. He played his career in what one could fairly describe as a third world country at the time, that was less able to capture his regular games and provide us with a wealth of footage of his play. That's a valid criticism on it's own. While it's true that international football wasn't yet a concept like it is today, when comparing to players today, it must be brought into consideration. Otherwise he's just the king of His Time, not All Time, because all time includes today. Winning World Cups are a marker or quality, but leagues have been and always will be the prime factor in the derivation of quality in a player. There is no statistical argument outside of sentimentalism to suggest otherwise. Every winner of every World Cup has enjoyed an element of luck in winning it. It's undeniable. A league, like a massively complex equation, will always return the answer for who is the strongest team of a period of given time. For comparison: Many Baseball players play their best games in the World Series, it's a known statistical phenomenon. Some players are almost as good as Mike Trout, if you only count world series performances. But Mike Trout does that week in week out in whatever ballpark he happens to be playing in that day. To butcher and paraphrase a managerial great: Being the best is not about winning the World Cup on the greatest stage. Being the best is turning up on a rainy weekday in Stoke, and still being the best in the world. And while it would appear that Pelé did play in such a manner, we have so little evidence of it that such criticism is inherantly valid. You can criticise somebody and still present them as a paragon of any given field, virtue or system. Sorry for the essay. Just wanted to get some things off my chest. God I love sports.
Listen there's no basis for this argument cos as at that time all the players were probably south America and very few came to Europe. Imagine if all this South America great players like Suarez , Ronald, romario ,etc were playing in south America were it all started for them , do you think Europe would have rival the south America leagues... I don't think so and that was what it was then . even Santos dominated the intercontinental cup and the world , with Pele , in the biggest games .
Enyone who knows enough about football is aware of how strong were the brazilian leagues and teams around his time. They would often win over the best europeans clubs. Brazilian teams could play against national teams and win by a good margin often. There were clubs that could even represent the national team with their full squad and beat the "better" from other countries, like Palmeiras did in 1965. And if you can't believe, it's pretty easy to know what the great european stars would say about facing him. Beckenbauer, Puskas and many others have talked about it. And Pele have played with Santos 130 matches against european teams, scoring 144 goals. Even in the 90s we would see some brazilian sides trashing european champions, like São Paulo against Milan and Barcelona, or Palmeiras' 6-1 against Borussia Dortmund (which would win the Champions League some time later). This is really not a valid argument by the time. Even now, if it wasn't for the money and most countries could keep their best players like that time, many european sides would have huge struggles against brazilian teams.
The most complete player ever. A player with no flaws. He was playing in an era that had no protection for players. The red card was introduced in 1970. Look at the protection players like Messi gets.
To say that southamerican leagues were lesser is not only an insult but also incorrect. At that time, the football landscape was nothing like today. The rivalry between South America and Europe was much stronger, because as it says, international transfers were a very small percentage of total movement between clubs. Also, SA had the best football of the world on earlier decades (1920s to 1950s, at least), with a strong dominance of Uruguay, and to an extent Argentina, of world football (nevermind 1934 and 1938, when Uruguay didn't participate for external reasons).
He made internationals look like lost boys. Players wanted to applaud him whilst they played against them. And a gentleman to boot. Edit: Careful making leaps when connecting the dots - shirts had been swapped on special matches or between specific players for about 35 years by this time. The first back in 1931; between England and France, The French are generally due the credit here as they asked for the shirts as a reminder of the game.
As a brazilian, 06:10 when ppl outside our bubble says that statement, we just ignore, cause is the worst comment u can say... back at that time, Santos (brazilian team), was the best team in the world, and for the most of europeans players that played against them, was a nightmare. Also, in that time, transfer windows was completely different, and there weren't many players from one continent, playing in another. So Santos had the best Brazilian players on the team, which probably means they were the best, as Brazil has always been the most influential country in football. Is kinda like nowdays, imagine if ppl could not transfer and u should play for a team on your national league. Brazil would again, have the bests players, u know? So, calling a "farmers" league, is just lack of knowledge and disrespect... Hope i could clear that for ppl who want to learn a bit... Lov u Luke!
Back then in the 60’s, the South American leagues were anything but, you just look at the teams that win the works cups and where they played the records of their club works cup records against European Clubs.
THE FOOTBALLER’S PRAYER Our team Which art eleven Hallowed be thy game Our match be won Their score be none On turf as we score at least seven Give us today no daily red … card And forgive us our lost passes As we forgive those Who lose passes against us Lead us not into retaliation And deliver us from penalties For three is the kick off The power and scorer For ever and ever Full time (Paul Cookson)
RIP to the best of all time BOAT ⛵ and the greatest of all time GOAT 🐐.Pele was a pioneer and that still remains the case because nobody has been able to do what he did with an efficiency rate that is same or better. Pele was technically better faster, stronger, well balanced in such that he wasn't just an all-round great player, his all-round abilities were very high unlike most all-rounders who are just average all-around.
The Forever King of Football (RIP). What does it tell about all the other leagues in the World, when this man/men/team from a "lesser" league wins Everything and Everybody in the World?! God bless Pele, his Family and Brazil!
My cousin saw him at an electronic store in Jackson Heights, NY. She didn't even know who he was, her brother told her, and they each took a picture, and she posted online. After all the comments, she realized who the man on the picture was. The King Pele. Rest in peace.
I think that he didn't play abroad is a bad criticism. (Although the Italian league was considered the best at the time) But one thing you should learn is that league football fans usually don't put what's done in the national teams in the same column as what's done in the leagues. The leagues have higher quality teamplay because the teams train together daily for year(s). And the world cup is a short tournament every four years. The world cup is great but it's a different kind of great.
Some people transcend the borderds, anywhere in world you can ask about Mohammed Ali, Michael Jordan and Pele. Pelé was so great he becamé a verb, if you are the best in something, you are the Pelé on that thing.
id love to see pele play now back then to stop him you had to take him out whe you could someway get away with it now you cant even touch players imagin how crazy it would be now with the ball being lighting also
Romance languages were built like very sylabically strict and meassured so it fits better on poetry or songs at the church, that's why it has a bunch of wierd rules
Brazil was the best league in the world in his time. All the players which won their world cups played in brazil.. not in Europe. Unlike now.. where most of the brazil national team’s players play in Europe.
Despite being a great loss for our football, Pelé’s passing was paled by the mourning of the good Brazilian people, who are incredulously seeing the greatest thief of world history being allowed to run the country again, with the blessings of our corrupt Supreme Court, the passivity of our Congress and the omission of our militaries.
A lot of people make the argument that his stats don't count because he played almost his entire career for Santos. That is a stupid argument because back in those days Brazilian players only played in Brazil and never went to Europe. The Brazilian "league" at the time was one of the strongest in the world. Even when Santos played friendlies with European teams they always came out on top. Basically it's a very different environment and people should stop comparing it to today's landscape.
They say this shit just because in that time Santos played against non professional teams a lot and Pelé did scored a lot against them. But that does not change the fact that when they played the professional ones they won aswell.
A tip: The problem with Argentina winning World Cup is everyone say Messi win the cup. Messi, Maradona, Pele, CR7, Ronaldinho, Ronaldo, Zidan, DiStefano, are all galactic level, but they couldn't win anything if the other 10 players in the team are the worst or mediocre level... So, next time someone tell you some player is the best because win too many cups, just ask who was beside him. Let me put it in context, Imagine being Mbape and score a hattrick but the defenders in your team are really bad and let the other team score six goals. Mbape will be still the best, but can't win a single cup in that way and that's what happened with Messi all these years
I'd like to vent some frustrations about Brazil being a "lesser league". Brazil's teams until the early 90's were strong teams that would play in european leagues easily and even be champions, this is so much true that a fair number of important brazillian teams won the club's world cup. Even today, if a south american player wins a ballon d'or he has to play in europe. Yes, Pele never won a ballon d'or but that is because he never played in europe.
South American leagues were not lesser leagues at that time. Brazil won 3 WCs in 12 years with no European club players. Santos fc and other Brazilian and South American clubs would beat European sides regularly. In a nutshell, the Brazilian leagues were in fact stronger than the European leagues of that era.

Pele only "won" 2 (he barely played in the second). And Garrincha and Jairzinho won it for Brazil). He never won a Copa America (and that is played more often than the world cup) and his hyped up goal count was in an inferior league or against nobody teams. There is nobody.... Nobody more hyped up than Pele. I don't even see his as the best Brazilian player. And you are correct... It was before the internet... So it was difficult for people to actually see who he was playing against. Pele even had trouble winning a title in the USA with the Cosmos without getting help from a fellow Brazilian and a star studded team. Good luck defending him 🐑
the argument of him playing on a "lesser league" is so dumb in so many levels. Just think about the fact that all the players who were world champions 3 times between 1958 and 1970 played the Brazilian league. Pelé wasn't playing against "farmers", he was playing against Garrincha, Nilton Santos, Rivellino, Tostão, Jairzinho, etc. I seriously doubt any other league had that much star power at the time.

Nice 'double' tribute Luke... thanks!
I like that quote “Messi wouldn’t be the player he is if it wasn’t for pele” that also goes for every great player after him including Maradona
that's absolutely true :).. there's a before and after Pelé.... also a before and after Maradona, and there will also be a BEFORE and AFTER MESSI
I love how you unravel the beauty of football days after days, glad you like this sport, greetings from France 😉
Exchanging jersey has been a tradition in football for a long time. Ever since I was a kid I remember seeing players doing that.
Fun Fact: His mother is 100 years old and is still alive, she saw her son's birth, all of his glory and now his death.
The King
Much agreed... good comment!
Puskás first wore the number 10 regularly as team captain. He and Pele had a lot of respect for each other, and Pele said that he chose the number 10 because he saw it on Puskás, when he was younger
@@uncle_matula awesome
11:10 Exactly what you said, Pele is like Mohamed Ali, Elvis etc... he's a legend
Man also use his football to stop a war once. RIP King Pele
Rip Pele the king the first true global sporting icon
Man you say so many more intelligent things than people who have been following the game for a long time.
Jugar con pele es jugar con dios invento todo el mas grandioso que piso este planeta Uruguay ❤❤❤ninguno como pele ninguno
Messi is NOT a GOAT. Let's start there.
During Pele's era, there was no gap between South American and European leagues at any level...Most South American players played in South America and still dominated international competitions..
The number 10 also start with him. The first World Cup they received the shirt Randomly and number 10 went to Pele so…. that’s the way I’ll started.
wrong, Puskás was the first, who use the nr. 10 from 1943 in Budapesti Honvéd to Real Madrid
HI LUKE, I HAVE JUST FOUND YOUR CHANNEL, I HAVE BEEN GOING THROUGH YOUR FOOTBALL ALL NIGHT. IT'S GREAT THAT YOU ARE LEARNING A GAME THAT IS FOREIGN TO YOU. IF SHEFFIELD UNITED ARE PLAYING AWAY I WATCH THE SHEFFIELD UNITED WAY, STREAMED BY 2 SOMETIMES 3

No doubt! PELE is the greatest football player of all time 🐐🐐🐐👑👑👑🙏🙏🙏 rest in PEACE KING 👑🐐🙏😇
As an Argentina who loves football and always wanted us to beat Brazil, but I could not hate Pele. Was lucky enough to see him play for Santos and Cosmos. Rest in Peace King.
"The difficult thing, the extraordinary thing, is not scoring a thousand goals, as Pelé did.
It's scoring a single goal like Pelé. That goal that we would like so much to score,
that we feel ripe to do, but which, devilishly,
don't let yourself be done. The goal."
Carlos Drummond de Andrade, brazilian poet
He was a special player. He had no rival ... No one to be compared with. On and off the fields was best ambassador to the sports. His humility is something else. RIP the King of football.
RIP pele. Never liked him tho due to the comments he made troughout the years. But sadly another legend has been taken from us
Fue un dios ❤❤❤
SIMPLESMENTE UM REI!
Pelé the BEST, King , Rei , alienígena!👑
RIP King of football! The Greatest of all time!!!⚽️🇧🇷
I know you like all kind of sports, so I recommend you see some videos about Ayrton Senna F1 pilot. He is to Brazil as much as hero as Pelé. Strongly recommend you to know his history, and how Ayrton impact the sport over the speedway!
The movie about Is amazing
I really enjoy your content. Believe me you are doint an incredible job. Greetings from Peru!
LOL these guys crack me up. They don't have a clue about what a 60's Botafogo was, for example.
He's reunited with Maradona, Cruyff, and all legends above the clouds now. May The King RIP.
I really doubt it about Maradona. The sex trafficking, drugs, cartels, rape and all that.
Legend on the pitch, not so much outside it.
@@becksquad Yeah I didn't say anything about his off the pitch "antics". So... There's that.
THE FOOTBALLER’S PRAYER
Our team
Which art eleven
Hallowed be thy game
Our match be won
Their score be none
On turf as we score at least seven
Give us today no daily red … card
And forgive us our lost passes
As we forgive those
Who lose passes against us
Lead us not into retaliation
And deliver us from penalties
For three is the kick off
The power and scorer
For ever and ever
Full time
(Paul Cookson)
The world must understand the importance of brazilian and south american football
Pelé was never a stricker, his position was center forward
My cousin saw him at an electronic store in Jackson Heights, NY. She didn't even know who he was, her brother told her, and they each took a picture, and she posted online. After all the comments, she realized who the man on the picture was. The King Pele. Rest in peace.
Pele is the greatest footballer ever. Diego Maradona comes second. The rest just follow.
Great video mate. You should also react to Maradona and Pele's rivalry! Also great content.
I think that he didn't play abroad is a bad criticism. (Although the Italian league was considered the best at the time)
But one thing you should learn is that league football fans usually don't put what's done in the national teams in the same column as what's done in the leagues. The leagues have higher quality teamplay because the teams train together daily for year(s). And the world cup is a short tournament every four years. The world cup is great but it's a different kind of great.
And remember....no internet...no TV......just radio and voice to voice.....PELE
Edson Arantes do Nascimento passed away, Pelé is eternal! 🙏🙏🙏🕊🕊🕊
"MAGICO GONZALES" GODS FUTBOL
You should watch his documentary on Netflix on your own time. It's great.
Brazil was the best league in the world in his time. All the players which won their world cups played in brazil.. not in Europe. Unlike now.. where most of the brazil national team’s players play in Europe.
RIP the King.
Video " Pelé era el futuro" sugestão.👍
damn that timing
THE strongest. You can say it.
Muhammad Ali said to Pelé after his last game. Now we have two "the greatest".
Brazilian league back in the day was the best league in the world
Pelé Is God di un altro universo ciao dalla Sicilia Italia
First thing People dont understand: europe was the farm league back them .
What people don't get is that if he played in a farmers league, what can you say about the others that couldn't stop him from winning three world cups
Yeah and Santos was the best club in the world at the first years of the 60s
They say this shit just because in that time Santos played against non professional teams a lot and Pelé did scored a lot against them. But that does not change the fact that when they played the professional ones they won aswell.
I love modern football but Cr7 messi and neymar can never reach pele's level!
"foorball had only 3 geniuses: pelé, maradona and messi" - fabio capello (italian coach)
Pele was 17 years old when he won the world cup in 1958 and not 18.
at the time the brazilian league was probably one of the best there was
amazing video
Check Michael Laudrup next
A very good shout.
South American leagues were not lesser leagues at that time. Brazil won 3 WCs in 12 years with no European club players. Santos fc and other Brazilian and South American clubs would beat European sides regularly. In a nutshell, the Brazilian leagues were in fact stronger than the European leagues of that era.
just know you react to the greatest ever
The ONLY GOAT scored 3 goals on the semi final and 2 on de final at age of 17. Played in 88 countries, 5 emperors, 10 kings, 108 heads of state, 3 World Cups, 1282 goals and 92 Hat Tricks……..with NO INTERNET AND NO SOCIAL MEDIA. PELE`
Good luck defending him 🐑
The Godfather of football
Europeans can say whatever they want. But I don't trade the Brazilian football championship by any of their league.
Watch the movie "Pele".... you will understand what he meant for fútbol.
the argument of him playing on a "lesser league" is so dumb in so many levels.
Cr7 🐐
