In middle school, my daughter was assigned to write a letter to a famous person and try to get something written back to her. She wrote Amy and Amy sent back a really gross bit of verbiage on a headshot of hers and the school called us and said that we had to come and pick it up and sign something understanding what we were picking up. I wish I could remember what it said but it was pretty disgusting and we loved it.

That's too funny!! I think my daughter would very likely pick David Sedaris. She's been reading him since 4th grade, and I believe it was 5th when her school called to ask if I was aware she was reading a book called 'Naked' and this principal had skimmed a bit, didn't think it was appropriate to bring to school. This was Alabama, where the average ADULT can't read beyond 6th grade level, but hey at least they don't read filth, right? 😆😂🤣
I love this story! You should find a way to tell Amy about the repercussions if you haven’t already. It’s such a great punchline.

In a just world, Sedaris would be bigger than Sandler. You don't see too many people make Dave genuinely laugh like that. He was actually rolling the conversation back to punchlines she'd already moved on from.

Fwiw, I met her at an event, and she was a bit standoffish, kinda guarded. So, it seems like she has to ramp up to the persona you see here, or needs a spotlight to focus her energy. You've probably met someone just like her, just need to catch her at the right time.
@@tvtitlechampion3238 I passed by her on the street in NYC once, and, as she passed, certainly not noticing me, I spun and went "Amy Sedaris!" She turned, and I put out my hand to shake hers and told her I really love her work. She only sort of looked at me, and I wasn't sure if it was b/c she was shy or was afraid I'd start rambling in her general direction (sometimes stars avoid eye contact b/c making eye contact invites conversation, and if they're not at an event, they usually don't want that), she gave me a very sweet thank you, and she walked off...and I 100% regret not asking her out to go to dinner or something. A friend of mine, who knows I've a crush on her, was also angry at me. I mean, I DID get to go out w/The Late Show's Hula Hoop Girl, so why not Amy?!

I love her and wonder about her "real" personality because whenever she's on TV she is definitely ON. It's all hyper, nervous energy which is fun but also a bit uncomfortable at times.
Dave had a lot of memorable repeat guests over the years, Teri Garr, Brother Theodore, Leno, Norm, etc... But the comedic chemistry between him and Amy was as good as it gets. I think if someone had told Dave he could only have Amy as a guest every night, he might still be doing the show.
