    Thank you for addressing that you might like phase cancelation.
    So many are people are so panicky about phase that they forget that you can do some great things with throwing signals out of phase.

    Tried the M/S with a cheap ribbon mic (t-bone RB500) and a cheap condenser (Haun MBC660L) to record my Martin OMCPA4. This setup sounds incredible great. Thank you so much for your tutorial.

      I agree but personally I like to mono mic acoustic guitars and double track or just pan the single mono signal off to the side. Stereo micing is great for a big wide sound but generally muddies up the guitar when put into a mix with bass drums and electric guitar ( which drive most of modern pop and rock recordings)

    • @GaragebandandBeyond
      @GaragebandandBeyond 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Doug Payne I would assume that's why they chose a finger picking song. To me, that was basically saying "this is what this setup is good at".

    being a fan of MS since I first saw this video few months before and having used that technique, I must say the most annoying fact about it is having to monitor the playing with earphones having two completely diferent sounds in your ears. But at the end this effort pays it off...

    Cool stuff. I have always listened to the natural tone of the guitar. With my EQ flat I would try to find the sweet spot that replicated that tone. (One mic) Sometimes it was towards the neck & on other guitars it would be at the bridge at the top of the guitar. The location & distance varied. I would mark it with painters tape for easy reference during the next session... Nice that you show the options. I will apply both methods now. Thank you, Loke

    • @caerulemusic

      Honestly you could get a similar effect just by double tracking with a single cardioid. That is, two takes of the same material each hard panned opposite.

    • @monkeyxx
      @monkeyxx 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mid Side is great for acoustic guitar! You can get an almost-mono sound but with that little spicy bit of stereo going on, adds so much interest vs a pure mono technique. Immediately I am a big fan. I use Apex 205 ribbons that have been modified.

    • @MrDonnyAir
      @MrDonnyAir 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not really. You're talking apples/oranges. Your method would require recording two distinct and separate performances. X-Y, Blumlein and MS arrays are stereo mic'ing techniques designed to capture one performance in stereo. You are referring to double tracking/OD. There's a big difference between that and stereo mic'ing, and they do not sound the same.

    The spaced pair stereo method at 3:47 sounds a lot like those early Bob Dylan records, especially "The Times They Are A-Changin'."
    Now to just get a pair of $1,000 microphones is our only challenge.

    This is one technique that I tried, primarily because, at the time, it's all I had. I was surprised at how good it sounded.
    First, took an SM57 and angled it up underneath the soundhole. Then I took a cheap large diaphragm condenser mic and put it about 6' away. It was raised up angled down towards the body of the guitar. I complimentary EQed them and panned them to taste. It created a wide stereo field and made one acoustic guitar sound like 2 separate acoustics.

    Three to one rule applies to mic'ing two separate mono sources (such as two singers). It would not apply to stereo recordings (of an acoustic guitar for example). So violate the "rule" at your pleasure. :0)
