      I wish I could do somwthing like this for my Dad but make it a handi shower with a bench and grab bars. He is 76 years old just had his fifth back operation and survived cancer three times. We have water damage on the subfloor in the kitchen . Its too much money right now and I really do not think I could something like myself. I am amazed at this kind of work.

    TRULY INSPIRING! Gotta say, too, that the extra touches in video production was great. (Like the text falling out of the bucket… very cool)
    A few years ago, we built an indoor shower that was made to look like an outdoor shower… we used more landscape construction rather than typical indoor methods. (Wish I could show you a picture… it’s pretty cool). Faux stone, river rocks… very “castle-esque”. Our budget was next to nothing, We went to Home Depot and discovered that a lame, plastic shower pan was $180… and I was like: NO WAY! We can do way better than a dumb square of plastic with a hole drilled in it. So we got started with left over supplies from various jobs and projects, repurposed lumber, etc. The end result is awesome.
    Before and since then, I have scoured the Internet for unique DIY ideas and could not find ANY that were as good or better than what we did. Not trying to pat myself on the back too much but everything was just various Home Depot inspired, boring crap. We have another shower to do and we wanted to improve on what we did before. It was pretty cool that our creation was better, in my opinion, than anything I was finding online but it was also discouraging because I felt like I was out of ideas. Yours is the first and only one I have found that truly got me inspired all over again. Absolutely stunning. I love it. CERTAINLY does not look like everything was purchased at Home Depot. Haha. AND it resembles a skill I have already practiced… I learned how to create large, naturalistic habitats for my reptiles that is basically expanding foam carved to look like real stone, then sealed with silicone and covered in sand, soil, coconut fiber, etc. This mine grotto shower is a much cooler, much sturdier variation of that theme so I feel like it’s something I could definitely pull off!
    Anyway, thank you so much for the awesome video and the truly unique inspiration. It’s exactly what I needed to spark my imagination once more and get to work!!

      I am buiding a very minimalist home using Faswall Blocks on a slab. The bath has 3 stick walls and one masonry. I would like to skip all the high tech multilayer hoohah if possible and it looks like you have?

    • @TheHiddenHomestead
      @TheHiddenHomestead  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@sandralewis1689 Ok well,
      -Is it all concrete? What you can see, yes it is.
      -special mixture? As the video shows it’s a mixture of Portland cement, fine sand and (acrylic) polymer admixes. So nothing to special about it but definitely not just a bag of type N mortar.
      -what sealants? For the walls the paint used is an acrylic modified exterior paint which seals the concrete then 511 impregnating sealer is used over that. The floor is sealed with a masonry penetrating sealer then an acrylic concrete sealer.
      When you say high tech multilayer hoohah, what are you referring to? I do have multiple layers but no they’re not all that high tech or expensive. The most expensive thing that I used is the hardibacker cement board with hydro defense. There’s many ways to “properly“ build a shower. But depending on who you talk to you more then likely built it wrong. I’ve been told numerous times that the way I built it is wrong. And maybe I did. Maybe I don’t know any better because I’m not a professional shower guy. But what I do know is that it was built a little over a year ago, I take VERY long evening showers shamefully wasting a ton of water, it was built on the second floor just above the family room where I spend the rest of the majority of my time when inside and not asleep, and ya know what? So far no leaks. I say all that to say this, I think that a little common sense sometimes can go further then the high tech hoohah.
      Hopefully that answers at least most of your questions.

    Well that topped everything else....I've officially seen it all. That was honestly truly absolutely amazing. I'd love to know how many hrs you have in that project. Damn truly awesome!

      Hey thank you! From demo to clean up I probably have about 75-80 hours. That was of course by myself and a lot of it was spent going up and down the steps. 😮‍💨

    Just a word of advice. You need to start wearing a mask when working with cement projects or you will really regret it later.

    I think that design could easily spread throughout the house, I have a ton of questions that I sure wish were answered throughout the video, but great job, please do a follow up after a while to discuss any changes, cleaning, maintenance, etc . I love unconventional home designs and this definitely fits the bill, great job!

      Thank you! I was actually thinking about doing a follow up to discuss the pros and cons and how we clean it.

      @TheHiddenHomestead that would be great! I'm also very curious how you clean it with so many little grooves. I'm sure you can't take a brush to it or else it would scratch.

    • @TheHiddenHomestead
      @TheHiddenHomestead  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@user-cr6ki4qs4y no we actually do use an electric oscillating soft bristle brush with 50/50 water/vinegar spray. Every once in awhile we’ll need to use something a little stronger to get rid of the really stubborn soap scum.

    Dude! Most impressive video I’ve seen on TH-cam in a long time. How long did it take once you got the old tile out?

      Thank you!! After demo I probably had another 40 hours in it. Most of which were spent walking up the stairs.

    The best shower ive ever seen....looks like a million bucks....im sure it wasnt overly expensive either:) How much did it cost all up to complete the shower?

    • @TheHiddenHomestead
      @TheHiddenHomestead  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you. Material for it wasn’t that expensive. I think it ended up being 700-800 for the whole thing.

    just found this video. amazing work!
    Is there any issues with water standing in the big gaps? would you grout the spaces just i case ?
    I would like to make something like this but i worry about the possible mold and cleaning issues. is it fairly easy to keep clean and maintained?

    • @TheHiddenHomestead
      @TheHiddenHomestead  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      All the edges/gaps were shaped downward to allow drainage of excess water. The whole thing is essentially one big grout piece so I wouldn’t worry about it. Plus it’s sealed up with the paint and impregnating sealer.
      Speaking of paint; I use a high acrylic outdoor paint with mold prohibitors in it. I’m not sure what exactly is in the paint but it does help keep the growth of mold down.
      As far as maintenance and cleaning it is fairly easy… considering what it is anyway. It definitely takes more to clean then a normal shower. But. It’s not a normal shower. First thing to consider is a water softener. This will keep a lot of the calcium buildup from forming. Second we spray it down with a 50/50 mix of water/vinegar one or two times a week. Then, once or twice a month we scrub it down with an electric powered rotating soft bristle brush and more water/vinegar. It’s really not as difficult as some would think.

    Not the style I'd have chose but gotta admire the craftsmanship & the profound weirdness. Does the sealer do a good job keeping moisture out of the slabs?

    • @TheHiddenHomestead
      @TheHiddenHomestead  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      As far as I know it does. We haven’t had any issues with it.
