    This is my review of the CineStill 800 Tungsten High Speed Colour Negative Film. What makes this film unusual is that this is actual Kodak cinema film used in the movie industry, but specially modified to be C-41 chemistry safe. This means you can run it down to your local 1 hour lab and get this film processed without any special instructions or procedures (unless you push or pull process your film). Although not necessary, when combined with lenses that have a cinematic rendering (like Leica M lenses or actual cinema lenses), the images are amazing. For this review I used the Leica M-A and the 35mm f/1.4 Summilux Aspherical, and it worked really well with this high speed ISO 800 film for night photography. Please enjoy this review and my previous video review of the Leica M-A and 35mm Lux where I show images taken with the CineStill film as well as Fujifilm Pro 400H and ACROS 100. Thanks for watching and happy shooting.

    Take, the halos around the highlights are due to the absence of an anti-halation layer. Normal color film has the AH layer on the front, under the light-sensitive emulsion. Cine film has it on the backside of the film, a black layer, called remjet, that will slough off into C-41 chemistry. So CineStill removes the black remjet layer, but it results in severe halos of light.

      Yes thank you for the info. At the time I did not have this info, but I've spoken with Brandon Wright, co-founder of CineStill since I've been back to Canada. Very cool what they're doing and I'm glad I accidentally discovered the film while in Hong Kong. I'm also going to do a review of the Double XX film, which is also cine film but black and white.

    I don't usually like camera and film reviews because for some reason people don't post actual pictures...really though wtf they don't, but your photos on this are awesome! So big ups for that, I fell in love when it got to the umbrella shots and the alleyways. Great work my friend, keep that up and keep keeping it real.

      I’ve read somewhere below you mentioned that you exposed the film at 500 iso. Aren’t the shadows going to get “muddy”?

    • @bigheadtaco
      @bigheadtaco  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@abraxamovic shooting at night is tricky, so ISO doesn't matter as much as exposing for the middle ground. But yes I rate the film at ISO 500 and when I meter I set it at ISO 500. No issues with shadows :-)

  • @khronokraze
    @khronokraze 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Thanks for the video. I was hoping to see more on your experience with Cinestill.
    I was totally in and out of that same elevated walkway in Mong Kok everyday when I was there in March 2016... our hotel was near one end of that walkway.. or walkways.. as it is somewhat expansive. Kind of crazy on Sundays when all (maybe not "all", but A LOT of) the Philipinos are out on their day off from their work week and gather all along there.. and even down in the streets to hang out with family and friends.. apparently a lot do not have their own place while they work and stay with their chinese residences.. I am told they also get together to rent a room somewhere for the night together because of this.
    BTW, with the Cinestill, I believe it's the remjet layer that was removed... I think it's pretty much the same as Kodak Vision3 200T with the remjet already removed.. but, I could be wrong. anyways..
    Ok, first off, let me say I'm not saying you can truly 100% replace analog film stock with a digital film simulation, but you can come darn close if you wanted to keep with digital and get a certain look with straight out of camera jpegs. Each person's ideal look and expectations will vary.
    I like the look of this Cinestill film that you are using.. I have also tried to simulate the look in my Fuji cameras, the X-Pro2. I know it probably won't be 100% the same, but from my initial trial, what I find works pretty nicely is using Classic Chrome, Noise Reduction -4, Sharp -4, Color +4, Grain Weak, with WB set to 4200K. I feel it comes pretty darn close to it.. Your eyes may interpret it differently, but I think it's a good starting point to tweak here and there, maybe less color or one of the other film simulations like Pro Negative, to your personal tastes.
    I like the way it looks outdoors in daytime and at night... that blueish greenish tone as you described, a tad bit warmer at night, but it depends on the lighting you might have nearby at night or low light. BUT, under certain lighting conditions, it can be too orange.. if it does shift too warm, I adjust the WB down to about 3200K and I think it brings the look I like back into tonal range.
    As part of further trying to simulate matching shooting with Cinestill, or shooting film in general, I just turn off the rear screen and any preview and force myself not to look at anything until way later after I'm done with the shot or scene. It's the best I can do without bleeding the wallet on a Leica M-D.. not 100% the same experience, but close enough for now on my tight budget.
    To further simulate the feel of shooting film, get and adapt a vintage lens, it doesn't necessarily have to be anything expensive or optically very high.. perhaps quite the opposite might even be better.
    I wouldn't be able to use the OVF with an adapted MF lens.. not without creating a static frame line with no true or accurate compositional aids.. so, the EVF.. and I would suggest turning off all the live preview information in the EVF so it behaves closer to looking through an optical viewfinder.. you can still get a surprise on how your image may ultimately look much like the anticipation of waiting for film to develop.

    @niallthestyle 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    It's a beautiful film stock. And it looks wonderful in the hands of bigheadtaco! If you want to shoot in daylight and you pop a filter on your lens you can shoot it at 400 ISO, so it's a pretty versatile film too. I wish I could shoot more of it but that stuff is expensive where I am.

    • @bigheadtaco
      @bigheadtaco  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes I know a few guys in Hong Kong who actually prefer it as a daylight film. Since I had so much Fujifilm Pro 400H, I didn't try shooting it like that.

    • @niallthestyle
      @niallthestyle 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      bigheadtaco I haven't tried it myself but I might do soon. It would make it a very versatile film to stick in the camera. and the 50D one is a bit too fast for me.

      Where do you live and what does it cost there? I live in Australia and currently pay around 16$ for a roll of 35mm Cinestill..its expensive but its the only film I use for shooting at night because of the effects you get with it..just a beautiful film to use.

    That’s the unique thing about Cinestill is that it’s so hard and nearly impossible to recreate digitally. There are digital sensors and editing that can look exactly like some film stocks but cinestill you simply cannot. Plus cinestill still looks great pushed.

    You can shoot Vision3 films if you want to develop at home and simply rub off the remjet layer after the blix. Though for cinema films I replace the C41 devloper with RA4 since it uses CD-3 instead of the CD-4 as in C41 chemistry. Cinestill is Vision3 which was made for ECN-II processing which uses CD-3. The colors look even nicer when done like this in my view. Those are my tips to anyone who wants to develop this stuff at home. It's a lot of fun.

    Trying my first roll. Set the camera to iso 3200.
    I would think this means pushing it two stops, but their website says something else. What do I tell my Lab? Two or three stops?
    When should I push CineStill 800Tungsten?
    A: We recommend push processing for anything over ISO 1600. Treat this film as an ISO 800 speed film when processing in C-41 and push process whenever needed up to ISO 3200.
    Recommended ISO and acceptable exposure for push processing:
    ISO 800 - No push - EI 200-1000
    ISO 1250 - 1 stop push - EI 800-1600
    ISO 1600 - 2 stop push - EI 1250-2500 (added contrast)
    ISO 3200 - 3 stop push - EI 1600-3200 (most contrast)
    Test it yourself and see how you like it exposed!

      awesome, it's a great film. Just remember that since a layer has been removed, the emulsion is a bit thinner which weakens the physical film itself. Load carefully. It works best with manual wind cameras, or cameras that allow for slow auto advance like the Konica Hexar

    • @bigheadtaco
      @bigheadtaco  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think it's your exposure, not the film. Spot meter the scene and see if the exposure is correct. You can DM me in Instagram and show me the over exposed images and I could probably tell what went wrong :-)

  • @Matt9163
    @Matt9163 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Would this work on an Olympus Trip 35? The ISO only goes up to 400 so I’m wondering if you’ll manage to get the same results?

    • @bigheadtaco
      @bigheadtaco  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Although you're over exposing by 1 stop, the bigger issue is getting the right exposure. I often shoot this film at ISO 500, so It think you'll be find. Just know how to meter for shooting at night. Reflective metering at night can be up and down so you have to spot meter and average the exposure.

  • @dezfoto7534
    @dezfoto7534 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I had really poor results from Cinestill, after processing it looked like there was was water marks all over my negs and it was much grainier than I would expect. I've very familiar with Kodak Vision 3 500T movie film (which this is based off of) and it shouldn't be this grainy, even at EI800. For tungsten lights on set it's usually rated at EI500, but it's routinely pushed and pulled a couple of stops but I've never seen results as grainy as the Cinestill version. Removing the Remjet also means you're removing the anti-halation layer, which is why you get the halos on points of light.

    • @bigheadtaco
      @bigheadtaco  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      sorry to hear. I had my developed at a regular lab in Hong Kong (Dot Well Photo) and the negs are perfect. The emulsion is thin due to the removed layer, but the exposure was fine, and grain was reasonable. I always made sure I over exposed though.

    Fuji needs to make a cinema-ish film simulation like this, looks awesome! I have also played around in photoshop/lightroom to get that kind of look, never really succeded. Anyone knows of any good lighroom presets that gives this look?

      Fujifilm makes broadcast film, but I don't think they make cinema film anymore, which is too bad. Of all the major film manufacturers, Fujifilm is in the best position to make new films, but I think their focus is on the INSTAX system since it's the most profitable of all their photographic products. I like INSTAX, but I love roll film even more!

    never heard people using blue filters for tungsten lighting tho, name the filter number? pretty much the 85 series is best for tungsten lighting, respect.

    • @bigheadtaco
      @bigheadtaco  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s super rare because if you load your camera with tungsten balanced film, why would you then want to rebalance the film back to daylight? I don’t know the filter number, but if you go to the Lee filter system, they do have a kit for this, and the filters are all different tones of blue.

    hey Take, always love your videos! Where do you get your film developed and scanned in Vancouver? I'm looking to scan my first roll and it seems like London Drugs and Kerrisdale Camera are the most convenient for me.

    • @bigheadtaco
      @bigheadtaco  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The Lab on Great Northern Way is the best in town because of their dip and dunk process, although I use London Drugs on East Hastings near Nanaimo since they actually have a lab in the store (most ship off to another location and takes a day or two). Long term I would either like to collaborate with one of the companies so I don't have to worry about dev and scan. For now I develop only and scan at home using the Epson Perfection V750 Pro

    BTW the red halos are present because when they remove the remjet backing (which ruins c41 processing), they also remove the anti halation layer. So the normal vision 3 500t doesn't have that. (someone correct me if i'm wrong)

    Nice Work BHT this is one of your best videos to date I had to watch it several times. Great photos with beautiful atmosphere and music. I recently discovered CineStill film. I am an early backer and hoping I get my 120 CineStill before heading to Southeast Asia in March for a photography expedition. On night shots like this is your phone meter app of any use? Do you meter on the shadows or highlights or center?

    • @bigheadtaco
      @bigheadtaco  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Chris, I'm happy you ordered your 120 CineStill early, but I do hope you get it on time. it' really hard to meter at night because of the dark and really bright areas. I did some initial readings with scenes that had a good mix of strong light and deep shadows. After that, I just adjusted by eye and feel according to the increase or decrease in EV. I was usually within a stop or two. Better over than under of course, especially if you want the halos

    • @chrisdillow2324
      @chrisdillow2324 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's what if figured. You did great eyeballing it. This film does have excellent highlight recovery so I agree better to go over then under. Keep up the good work. If I don't get it in time the M6 will do with some 35mm.

    • @bigheadtaco
      @bigheadtaco  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      for sure, what you'll gain with the 35mm is lens speed. Shooting at night at 1/60th sec hand held is getting close to the limit. I did got down as low as 1/15-1/30th, but then you must accept blurriness, which I'm totally cool with. But imagine 120 pics with this film? I'm excited to give it a try again in Hong Kong.

    • @chrisdillow2324
      @chrisdillow2324 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes but not too much. I only have a Summicron can't afford a Summilux :)
      The 120 camera I plan to use is the Fuji GF670. It has a max aperture of 3.5. It weighs about the same as an M and since it's a range finder you can brace it against your head when shooting.

    • @bigheadtaco
      @bigheadtaco  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes you can push the CineStill to 1600, although 3200 is not as common. Many just shoot at 1600 so underexpose by a stop and just push it when printing. This makes the images grainy. I personally don't like it, but many do.

      Pencil Jockey did you watch the video? He said 1/60th.

    • @bigheadtaco
      @bigheadtaco  7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      typically f/2.8-4 to get some depth of field focus, and 1/30-1/60th of a second. That sounds crazy for those who shoot digital, but for us film guys, it's another night on the street. That's why pushing film to 1600-3200 ISO is very common for film shooters, since we've got use to digital ISO speeds. But I'm use to the slower speeds.

    • @MrPhotographerDude

    Hi, Take. I just bought a used Ricoh FF-3 AF and a roll of Cinestill 800t. I just realized that the Ricoh FF-3 doesn't have ISO 800 setting on it, it jumps from ISO 400 to ISO 1000. What ISO should I use for the ISO 800 film? Thanks

    • @bigheadtaco
      @bigheadtaco  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If you're shooting in daylight (which you can) shoot ISO400, if you're shooting at night, ISO 1000. You should be fine.

    • @Yulad_A
      @Yulad_A 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      bigheadtaco Sorry but shouldn't it be the other way around? I might be wrong but I think using ISO 400 setting on ISO 800 film will make it overexposed as the camera lets more lights into the film?

    • @bigheadtaco
      @bigheadtaco  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes, CineStill wants you to overexpose during the day, but slightly underexpose at night. It seems odd but it works, or at least it did for me. I rated CineStill ISO 500 for the day and it was perfect. I rated it 800 for night, but found I was slightly over exposing, so I wish i underexposed it. And this isn't push-pull process. You still develop at 800. You can email CineStill if you wish to confirm this, but in my experience this worked for me
