7:45 why does a double on opponent's 1D shows both major suits here? How can one go about doubling with just one biddable major after opponent overcall with 1D or 1C?

Hi. The negative double only applies when your Partner opens and your right hand opponent overcalls. In this deal, partner opens 1C and opponent bids 1D. You have the ability to bid either major if you have just one, but if you have both you can double to show that. Please note, that this is the only bidding sequence where this applies. It can’t apply over 1C because that is the lowest bid and can never be an overcall. I like to think of it as a way to punish your opponent for interfering by bidding two suits at once!

3:00 Why does partner responds like 1H had been opened and not other suits?

Hi. After your opponent overcalls in a major suit, your double is a cheap way of bidding the other major suit. It does not apply to minor suits. This is a convention that punishes your opponent for interfering in your bidding.

Jadm is Negative double signaling only the 4+ cards in Major suits?

    • @jadbridge

Hi Bogdan. Yes, after partner opens a suit and your opponent overcalls, a double shows the unbid major suit or suits. There are ways to extend negative doubles to minor suits, but they are complicated and relatively rare. I will make an extensions episode on that topic.

Good day M Delokk, I've been using double much more than before thanks to your videos. I have a question concerning doubling as the advancer. I've been doing it in situations really close to the deal #253 except instead of being the responder I was the advancer. I wasn't sure if it was ok but felt it was the only way to describe my hand as I had 4 nice hearts and 4 nice spades with only 2 cards of my partner's suit and 3 cards in the opponent suit and about 12 points. Another time I had 4 cards major in the unbid opponent's suit and points. My question is not specific to these particular situations but more about if you think it wise to double as advancer or how many points you would need to do so. Thank you

Hi JD. Doubling as advancer is tricky and definitely something you should discuss with your partner beforehand. I don’t teach it to less experienced players. But it can be useful, normally when opener’s partner passes or (less so) if they raise opener’s suit. In these situations it can be a useful way to show a strong multi-suited hand or to ask partner to specify their strength. But if three suits have been bid it doesn’t have an obvious meaning. As you advance in Bridge you will find uses for bids that are otherwise unused. This can be great fun. Good luck.

@@jadbridge Thank you M Delokk! It is really easy to find information about how many points one needs to open or how to use finesse but once you've learn the basics it gets a lot harder to find answers to all the different situations you find yourself in. I'm so happy I found your channel and I thank you for your generosity!!
