  • Today we are sailing from El Nido to Coron Island in the Philippines with Tao Philippines a Filipino sailing company.
This is NOT sponsored and I paid the full amount of $750++ for the 6 day trip so that I can document the full experience and share my true experiences with you all.
Never fear however as the trip was absolutely incredible from start to finish (only a few bumps in the road) which I will talk about during this two part mini series.
This series was filmed in February 2023.

i prefer Philippines than other sea countries because of many reasons like the people, no language barrier, good air quality, its more fun, more of a family vacation, the beach ofcourse the beach are on another level it is really Paradise. i hope this country still remains to be a family get away, a hidden gem and a paradise in the future.

The double outrigger sail boat is the same design as the ancestors of Filipinos, the Austronesians, used to sail the seas and the Pacific ocean as far back as the 2000 BC. That's how the descendants of the Austronesians managed to island hop using the wind, current, stars to guide them - no gps etc. The Tagbanua are probably one of the oldest groups in the PH, descendants of the original Austronesian settlers, the housing style follow original housing design. The Tau expedition gave you more than just the island hopping experience but also a bit of historical experience, minus the Filipino/Asian fusion cuisne (which I think looks almost a culinary experience). Most tourists and locals have no clue about the historical contribution of the Filipino Austronesians to the region and the Pacific. $750.00 for the whole trip may be expensive for the Philippines but compared to others it is very reasonable. My 3 day trip to the southern highlands of Papua New Guinea cost me almost double that, 15 years ago.

It would take a lot of money as a Filipino to see the many islands so I've been to only 5 islands man, this Palawan tops all those I've been to beauty wise. Your presentation and rating on the expedition is exactly what I've seen on the video save and except the unorganized processing of your booking which is
      not unusual in the country.

The truth is Tao can build fancy boats as they have in Thailand, but the purpose of Tao building boats made of wood and basic accommodation is to protect the environment. If you look at the first boat, no plastic was used, not even paint many patches of wood were recycled. They ban plastic items on board and into the islands.

The price is not really bad at all if you compare it with any Carribean all-inclusive vacation package tour, except that plane fare is not included in the package. However, the experience of island hopping to different island paradise, the sailing in a vintage boat, the friendly and relaxing atmosphere, and sleeping close to nature devoid of modern amenities is a good therapy for someone who badly needs a reset.

It's kind of funny seeing people rave about the "banana flower burger" (called ukoy na puso ng saging in Tagalog) when it's the one usually sold for cheap to plebs like us while the rich people get to eat the ones with real meat. Just something to note when people talk about Filipino cuisine, most people don't realize that there's a big difference between the food sold in restaurants and that cooked at homes, usually with vegetables grown from a person's backyard.

Cost is relative. Compared to Philippine prices, a lot of common folk back home would find that price extravagant. But, for United States, Europe and even Japan , Korea and Singapore prices, that is downright very reasonable. An hour helicopter ride in Hawaii can buy you a weeks accommodation with complimentary breakfast daily in Palawan which evidently is not as well developed but the natural beauty and the marine life in Palawan will beat that hands down!

A lot of Thailand fan boys trash Philippines food but honestly you can get some epic food in Philippines! It’s maybe just not as widespread or consistent as Thailand etc as each region is quite different, Philippines is not a single culture like Thailand.

    • @denniszenanywhere

Well, the only edge of Thai food against Filipino food is that the Thai government supports and funds Thai restaurants outside of thailand. That is why they’re popular. Just as the Philippines has many islands, it has more and different cuisine. It’s not all pork and meat but even a wide assortment of veggie food. They’re not going to be in every vlog or blog post as the pork and meat varieties just get more media coverage than the veggie food.

@@lanieaguisanda6221 It's just that the Philippines has poor marketing of our food against the more global marketing machinery of Thailand. Not only that, being in the States for 20 years, I see more Thai-made products in supermarkets. That's because of their efficient shipping system. They don't have the logistical problem because it's not like the Philippines which has more than 7,600 islands, making it a logistical nightmare but on the upside, a more diverse cullture -- with yes, diverse cuisine still unheard of and not explored by 99% of vloggers. I remember the ingenuity of Bukidnon people for lechon paksiw -- the best I've taested anywhere, the laing of Bicol, the kalamay of Tarlac, the many coconut-based veggies. All foreigners know is that we have pork food, which we have perfected but they know little to nothing of the varieties. We even have our own ceviche in kinilaw. Even other Asians admit to how we've even outdone some Chinese food. Our porridge -- arrozcaldo is better than the Chinese porridge, the lumpia is better than egg roll. Please add Filipino food here that no one talks about.

the flavors and recipes are good, it's just the quality of the ingredients is often very bad. Also the American influence (way too much sugar) ruins the food. Filipinos need to stick to salty, sour, and spicy- the traditional flavors of Filipino food

    • @arvina94
      @arvina94 ปีที่แล้ว +13

When Thailand started becoming more popular, word got out that street food would be cheaper and delicious if they found out the local spots where most Thais would eat in. Popularity boosted competition.
Most people don't do that for the Philippines, partly because even the snobbish upper middle class deride the local karinderyas due to colonial mentality, so instead they direct people to the rather expensive restaurants serving the blandest versions of Filipino food while they themselves gorge on verious foreign cuisines that serve as status symbols.
What most foreigners and upper middle class Filipinos don't know is that in every ward in cities and small towns there is always 1 local karinderya that's flocked by everyone in that ward, the actual best places to sample good Filipino food outside of homecooking by the people themselves. I have yet to see a traveller to the Philippines visit those spots, outside Mark Wiens and the guy from BEFRS, maybe a few more who has done a Binondo tour.
The funny thing is, UN FAO data shows Filipinos eat more vegetables and fruit and less meat on average than most mainland SEAsians, especially compared to the Vietnamese but also Thais, but we're the ones who get bagged down by being a meat heavy cuisine, something very weird to hear from a Filipino who once preferred the meat and fry heavy Western cuisine as a kid compared to the more vegetable and seafood stew heavy Filipino cuisine I grew up with but learned to appreciate as I grew older. Even when people try out adobo, I found it quite weird to see all these foreigners eating adobo without vegetables in it when the adobo I grew up with has half its weight in potatoes or taro.
Part of me doesn't want to point that out tho, I think it's great that we can quietly enjoy that shockingly delicious tinola with tanglad, ginataang sinaing na tulingan, binagoongan, for so cheap in the local karinderya we have that few people will ever know. Gatekeeping feels good sometimes.

The most tourist in PH are still the local tourists and we, pinoys mostly go on our holiday from fri to monday, avoid any public holidays.
Go on a private tour or semi private tour.

Enjoyed watching this part of your Philippines Next Level Adventure. The first wooden sailing vessel/ship you were on was truly exciting to see with it's historic design, and that woodwork looked amazingly styled, well maintained. Also every island looked completely amazing and what I'd want to see for such an expense and touristy thing to do without the mobs of tourists ruining the white sand (private) beaches and traditional Philippine styled huts you slept in each night, also the planned activities seemed "only ok" in my opinion, and appeared to be very limited on what you could choose to do, yes, snorkeling, scuba diving, beach going/swimming would always be on the list, a basic list, and I'm a bit surprised there were not like you say, an 'all day adventure' to take part in, like an expedition through the forests or to a mountain or 'site' on the islands you visited, or 'something' else (even at an additional cost) may have really made it even more 'next level,' but, all in all, it sounds and seems like it's well worth the expense paid regardless, that food looked unbelievably amazing each meal, and just wondered if you're not a huge 'fish' eater, and not a 'vegan' than the choices would be very small/limited, like not even a hamburger and fries, or buckets of rice and adobo-styled cuisines as an option every meal. I'm sure with the limited staff and facilities, that it wouldn't be practical, but I'm not a shrimp, clam or shellfish connoisseur, and one can only eat so much calamari (which I do love) each day/meal, so the food choices seemed a bit 'weak' as far as selection/alternatives appeared. The Lechon would certainly make up for it, as that's very popular/common Filipino eats. Would I spend that $ for it, YES, without a doubt it seems well worth the cost with Tao Expedition and tour company, but an even longer package like 7-10 nights/days with more cost would certainly be a suggestion on my part, as I would probably want even more time to enjoy in those private white sand beaches without the tourists, in a tourist beauty beach/island setting, even maybe a 3 night stay at each of them could work, if other activities (add-in tours) were provided. Great 6-day of video's you did, with your professionalism and true opinions, both the good and bad of, so enjoyed watching each one you shared with us. Stay Healthy, Happy and Safe, my Brother. Looking forward the the next set of videos you share with us, I do truly love your whole take on showing us a place anywhere you go.

Hi Paddy, another beautiful video. I did the 5 day trip with Tao from El Nido to Coron and our groupe stayed a whole day and 2 nights on Ngey Ngey Island. That was the absolute highlight. in our groupe we have had 10 guests who booked the 3 day trip and they had to leave the same day to Coron when we arrived at the Ngey Ngey camp. So we were just 15 "leftovers" on that beautiful Island. Really amazing! Best wishes to you...

Anyway, thanks for showcasing the beauty of our country to your followers Paddy. Hope you come back to PH again soon. Still so much to see like the Banaue Rice Terraces, Vigan, Batanes, Bukidnon, and also the many big festivals like Sinulog, Ati-Atihan, Pahiyas, Panagbenga and many more. ᵔᴗᵔ

A lot of city dwellers like those living in the capital could only dream of something like this specially with the price tag attached to the experience. I’ve experienced many similar adventures but I am one of the lucky ones who grew up in Palawan. I’d say a lot of Filipinos haven’t and could only dream of this kind of experience.

Looking at the food served, those are the simplest of food in the Philippines. The company looks like they are just matching the food with mostly foreigner guests. What i saw were burgers, pancakes, fish in sweet and sour or black bean sauce, pancit, tortang talong. That’s food when mom is too tired to cook 😂😂
Filipino food have strong salty and sweet flavors as they are supposed to be eaten with rice; and we love fried food to be dipped in vinegar.
We often make a dip when eating and our one bite is often with rice, a bit of the viand and thats how we balance the flavor.
Philippines is very regional, we have different languages, different food, different culture. Restaurant in the rest of the Philippines will mostly offer food for the locals, and it is difficult to be a vegetarian in the country as we are meat eaters. Vegetarian restaurants are difficult to find or almost zero especially in the islands and rural areas.

Hiya Paddy. Lovely you had some time out without a signal. To chill. Sleep to the sound of the waves, the best white noise.
For most people, the money spent on the trip is a lot of money.
I can imagine they were disappointed. Not to be staying at that beautiful campsite.
Fantastic next campsite. Dinner looked delicious.
Day 4. The wonky hut you climbed out from. 😁The beach. Wow. Paradise.
Your lunch on board the new boat. Made my mouth water.
You are a master of drone footage. Spectacular.
Shame about the jellyfish. The sunsets are insane. The Philippines has to be one of the best places in the world to snorkel or scuba.
Lechon. A celebration when this happens.
Day 5. Epic drone footage. Gorgeous. Camp Ngey Ngey. Wow.
The footage says it all. The food looked so good.
Always love your honesty. The lost boys. Love their name. The food on both boats looked so tasty. Good ideas for the trips to take in that it would have been good to chill at some places for a day. Love your content. Thank you for sharing. Can not wait to share these videos.
