Nintendo is still operating under completely different development conditions than the rest of the industry right now. Comparing them doesn't get you anywhere. It's like bringing mobile into the conversation. Nintendo's not even in the equation because they aren't trying to compete for the same customers as the rest of the gaming industry. They're trying to get children, casuals and brand new gamers. Their efforts to appeal to the "hardcore" fan are laughable at best and insulting at worst, when you consider their archaic online, lack of achievements, barebones current-gen 3rd party support, etc. Sure, they're selling more consoles, but they're just too different for anything valuable to come out of comparing them. Very critical actually…and he shares the views pretty much all of us have. At one point he even says “I know I’ve been griping a lot…” because there’s A LOT to gripe about when it comes to Xbox. I don’t know much about Colt…but you guys are missing out on a great, in depth Xbox episode. Give it a chance. I enjoyed it and I’m least invested in Xbox out of the big 3. I like Xbox slightly more than PlayStation (which I also like, btw) for 2 simple reasons. 1. I personally like offset sticks better and I don’t use third party controllers. 2. I don’t like story in video games so many of the PlayStation exclusive games are generally not for me. These are incredibly subjective and I’m definitely in the minority which is totally understandable. Being a console fanboy as an adult is incredibly depressing. Just let everyone play what they want on whatever they want. I play on all consoles but not everyone can do that or even wants to and that’s okay.
I'm confused at colts justification for paying for early access. Nate said ur not playing day 1 on gamepass if u offer a paid early access. There's no justification, it's not day 1.
While I agree with your premise legally it might still be seen as permissible, especially if Microsoft maintains that they use early access as a kind of paid final beta.
I completely agree with MVG when it comes to the capabilities of future Xbox hardware - it is extremely unlikely that they'll release Windows computers that are compatible with Xbox games, or vice-versa. To me based on those rumors the most reasonable expectation for an Xbox-branded handheld would be a regular Windows-based gaming handheld PC from the Surface team with a modern AMD chip. It won't be cheap, but it'll be sleek, and performant enough to play every game in the PC Game Pass library reasonably well.

Microsoft might want to dissuade existing subscribers of Gamepass Console from cancelling their subscription because that would mean they would lose their day 1 perks at that price if they ever were to want to resubscribe to Gamepass. It seems to me they are still discovering what pricing model is sustainable.
The valve discussion was really silly Nate. Valve is not the publisher of all games on Steam. They won’t be able to greenlight putting games on any platform other than PC/Mac, unless they renegotiate with every single publisher they’re hosting.
Valve/Steam is the service. If you put your games on Steam, the games can be purchased on any device hosting Steam. If next-gen Xbox has Steam integration, then all products on Steam would be available to those using it.
If Valve can get the same PC binaries to run on Xbox there is no need to renegotiate, and since Xbox uses a x86-64 CPU and Windows based OS there is no reason that it shouldn't. It's the same reason why there was no renegotiation to get your Steam games to run on the Steam Deck. The main obstacle to (legally) playing Steam games on the Xbox is Microsoft allowing the Steam app to be available for Xbox.
It might be unpopular but early access is great. It allows for devs to make more and capitalize on fomo, mean while normal folks wait for the Friday release or the following week. Maybe for competitive games it’s not great but devs can make more without charging everyone more 🤷♂️

Got screwed over with starfield and learned my lesson to skip early access but it’s being used for the devs to work out the kinks which is a real crime for those that support them the most
people dont have to except anything from microsoft. gamepass being the main focus is the reason why xbox is not popular. wheres the first party exclusives that would actually show off the power and features of the xbox series x.
What i think they should do with gamepass is make ultimate actually ultimate. Ultimate - you litterally get everything for subbing. Betas, early access, special demos, DLC, ect. You are paying for this you get everything. Standard - the cheap tier with bare minimum stuff mostly online play and a few games that are already well past their prime.
People forget that PlayStation had Steam ban Playstation games in countries that can't make a PSN. Playstation can easily block games on Microsoft handle if Steam comes to it.
They just need to make a pc handheld focused version of windows (mostly so you dont have to use the touchscreen all time). Make it so the Xbox PC app works really smoothly on it. I dont think an Xbox ONLY handheld will do as well as people think it will.
If the new fable only has a female protagonist then it will be a deal breaker for me. Ever since Fable 2 you have been able to pick your gender and in a game about embodying a hero, this is a must for the new fable. I actually think the remake of fable 1 should have added a female protagonist but if the new fable only gives you the female character then i am out.
They could make up the losses of multiplayer tier going free by selling more games because of building trust with consumers to buy games on xbox instead of pc. Right now we can't even quantify how many people avoid consoles because of the extra fee associated with multiplayer. Enticing those people to play on the ecosystem could be billions in revenue from a 30% cut of each game that's now purchased on xbox instead of pc.
If steam was on the Xbox, then surely Microsoft would want some kind of financial cut? Otherwise they are just surrendering revenue they would make through their own ecosystem. Microsoft would also then need two IDly be making a decent profit from their hardware. This conversation kind of reminds me of that speculation many people had about gamepass appearing on PlayStation and Nintendo systems, to me it was so obvious that the other party involved in such a deal would have no interest and that proved to be right as we have learnt from those court documents.
If they had to cram an x86 based Xbox system into a handheld, you would likely be looking at something with the bulk and price of stuff like the ROG Ally.

Nate, your logic on waiting for games is dumb, PC gamers wait for ports from Sony, they are in no rush to play on the platform they prefer. Just because someones not willing to drop money on another platform, doesn't mean they don't want to play the game. People can be patient, not to mention, these complete editions of Bethesda games are fully patched with all the content included. Also, not everyone can afford multiple eco systems .
The core point is that those who are willing to wait may be content to do so; but with MS offering their games Day 1 on PC, they have minimized the incentive to purchase Xbox hardware. If you want to be part of the Day 1 discussion for a major Sony release... you need a PS5.

However, there are tens of millions of gamers who aren’t willing to wait. I’m sure there are tens of millions who have a PC and a PS5/PS4. Xbox under Phil Spencer has repeatedly come up with growth strategies that reduce the insensitive to buy an Xbox. If you look at how lucrative it is to be a platform holder who makes 30% on every dollar spent on their platform it doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to disincentivize Xbox sales where you have a strong platform and user experience for the Windows Store and Xbox App on PC, or even worse, letting Valve take 30% and building up their platform. Phil has been very short sighted with his strategies, looking for short term growth opportunities with ridiculous expectations for future growth.
The disconnect between journalists and commentators from the gaming audience in regard to the appeal of Hi Fi Rush is so weird. I guess because it's their job to try games like that out, giving them the chance to fall in love with it. But me and my friends took one look at Hi Fi Rush and dismissed it as some trash Cartoon Network thing like Ben 10. Main character does NOT look cool. Not as bad as Concord, but kinda the same safe, toothless blandness as Star Wars Outlaws.

I don't mind seeing games 2 years+ out at all, until recently that was fairly common, just dont promise a date (or even year, really the way things are going). And do go radio silent for years. It IS rough when very little comes out across a few years though. But I dislike not seeing full deep dive gameplay after showing a game off 2/3 times. I'm yet to be convinced of any upcoming Xbox game apart from doom, which we have seen only one time. I'm still waiting for avowed/south of midnight to wow me. I think curating and supporting the development of good games in your studios is a real skill that requires retained talent in management, studio management and workers which is something Microsoft just hasn't developed as well as its competitors. There is a bit of a stink going back over a decade there and as a result they have a lot to prove. But games take longer than ever to develop and frankly just outright buying Actiblizz always kind of felt like the "easy" way out to me. I am still excited to see xbox mainly as a publisher going forward. Though I've already lost Hifi rush 2. So you know, mayve its not ideal on that front for me either. I'm hoping for an xbox handheld to give Nintendo/Valve competition. Gamepass on the go should do well enough, if they can ever get near Series S parity in a reasonable form factor in a few years (maybe something weaker running PC/App versions in the interim). The semi PC/console thing feels weird to me. If you they allow steam, how do they make money? Everyone will use steam. Will they demand a cut? Will steam give it. Hardware will need to be sold a profit in which case how do they compete with PS6/regular PCs.
The Game Pass from a first party release stand point is false. 2023 5 games. It'll be false this year too given ABK back catalogue + 2024 releases. Further, I heavily disagree about the narrative purposed in the Game Pass segment. Standard does have value, what the panel did not consider is the impact the black hole games have. For me, I like getting continuous info and seeing a roadmap because the big Live Service games do that too. It lets me plan when I can take a breather from those games to focus on a self-contained, premium experience instead. However I don't need the release date quite so far out thanks to Game Pass. Instead what's important is that Standard has the catalogue of games, since I usually miss the Day 1 and even Month 1 for titles given my spending/consumption. So being able to jump in when I've got that breather and enjoy titles, as well as benefit from sales is a great option for a cheaper price. That said, great show gents, I hope you have voices like Colt and others on more going forward.

Xbox could get back the money from not requiring an online subsciption buy the influx of new people, who would get an xbox just so they can play online for free. Then once they're in the ecosystem chances are there are going to be a good amount that will subscribe once a game pops up that they're intested in. Free online play would be a good selling point for xbox. and especially with the cost of living going up. like you said people are already establised with the playstation with trophies, library and friends being over there. it's really the only shot microsoft has to bring people to console.

I had an Xbox and an Xbox 360. After the huge fumble they did, I haven't considered even buying an Xbox. The naming scheme + the silly "you can only play games online" idea just killed my interest exactly at the time as the gamepass went full swing. No reason to own the device anymore. I still don't feel like I need an Xbox but something feels like they could be at a turning point soon.
They are definitely going full third party. I say that as an Xbox owner who was really hoping they would turn things around this gen. I’ve loved their software output, but it hasn’t resulted in high console sales or high game pass subscriptions, and the writing is on the wall with them putting games on other consoles

Certain games don't need to be long experiences. Not every game needs to be 60-100hrs. A nice, compact well-paced 30hr game is perfectly fine. I'd rather have a game that feels a tad too short than one that runs far too long.

I'm conflicted. I want more competition in the console space, but I *hate* Gamepass.... specifically Day One release. I like the series X hardware (not the forced online/monthly updayes) However as long as Microsoft push that, I can't support them continuings to exist. I won't buy any game that's a Day one release on Xbox. I rather sail the high seas than support any Day one GamePass game.
One game per quarter except the majority of games are incomplete and broken for months and months. EA and Ubisoft are circling the drain. Game Pass is a terrible value at this point especially when Ultimate exceeded $15 a month. It's not priced for the casual market.

These are incredibly subjective and I’m definitely in the minority which is totally understandable. Being a console fanboy as an adult is incredibly depressing. While I agree with your premise legally it might still be seen as permissible, especially if Microsoft maintains that they use early access as a kind of paid final beta.
You are getting the game the same day it goes in-store unless you're paying for early access.
I completely agree with MVG when it comes to the capabilities of future Xbox hardware - it is extremely unlikely that they'll release Windows computers that are compatible with Xbox games, or vice-versa. To me based on those rumors the most reasonable expectation for an Xbox-branded handheld would be a regular Windows-based gaming handheld PC from the Surface team with a modern AMD chip. It won't be cheap, but it'll be sleek, and performant enough to play every game in the PC Game Pass library reasonably well.

Microsoft might want to dissuade existing subscribers of Gamepass Console from cancelling their subscription because that would mean they would lose their day 1 perks at that price if they ever were to want to resubscribe to Gamepass. It seems to me they are still discovering what pricing model is sustainable.
The valve discussion was really silly Nate. Valve is not the publisher of all games on Steam. They won’t be able to greenlight putting games on any platform other than PC/Mac, unless they renegotiate with every single publisher they’re hosting.
Valve/Steam is the service. If you put your games on Steam, the games can be purchased on any device hosting Steam. If next-gen Xbox has Steam integration, then all products on Steam would be available to those using it.
If Valve can get the same PC binaries to run on Xbox there is no need to renegotiate, and since Xbox uses a x86-64 CPU and Windows based OS there is no reason that it shouldn't. It's the same reason why there was no renegotiation to get your Steam games to run on the Steam Deck. The main obstacle to (legally) playing Steam games on the Xbox is Microsoft allowing the Steam app to be available for Xbox.

It might be unpopular but early access is great. It allows for devs to make more and capitalize on fomo, mean while normal folks wait for the Friday release or the following week. Maybe for competitive games it’s not great but devs can make more without charging everyone more 🤷♂️

What i think they should do with gamepass is make ultimate actually ultimate.
Ultimate - you litterally get everything for subbing. Betas, early access, special demos, DLC, ect. You are paying for this you get everything.
Standard - the cheap tier with bare minimum stuff mostly online play and a few games that are already well past their prime.
There's no consistency in early access in Game Pass. I'm pretty sure Gears 5 early access was included, but Starfield was not.
People forget that PlayStation had Steam ban Playstation games in countries that can't make a PSN. Playstation can easily block games on Microsoft handle if Steam comes to it.

Ever since Fable 2 you have been able to pick your gender and in a game about embodying a hero, this is a must for the new fable. They could make up the losses of multiplayer tier going free by selling more games because of building trust with consumers to buy games on xbox instead of pc. Right now we can't even quantify how many people avoid consoles because of the extra fee associated with multiplayer. Enticing those people to play on the ecosystem could be billions in revenue from a 30% cut of each game that's now purchased on xbox instead of pc.
If steam was on the Xbox, then surely Microsoft would want some kind of financial cut? Otherwise they are just surrendering revenue they would make through their own ecosystem. Microsoft would also then need two IDly be making a decent profit from their hardware. This conversation kind of reminds me of that speculation many people had about gamepass appearing on PlayStation and Nintendo systems, to me it was so obvious that the other party involved in such a deal would have no interest and that proved to be right as we have learnt from those court documents.
Im not impressed by a showcase when they havnt put out a quality game in 2 generations.
I got a Series S near launch, but I regret giving Microsoft a chance this generation. No good exclusives yet besides Forza Horizon.

If you look at how lucrative it is to be a platform holder who makes 30% on every dollar spent on their platform it doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to disincentivize Xbox sales where you have a strong platform and user experience for the Windows Store and Xbox App on PC, or even worse, letting Valve take 30% and building up their platform. Phil has been very short sighted with his strategies, looking for short term growth opportunities with ridiculous expectations for future growth.

The disconnect between journalists and commentators from the gaming audience in regard to the appeal of Hi Fi Rush is so weird. I guess because it's their job to try games like that out, giving them the chance to fall in love with it. But me and my friends took one look at Hi Fi Rush and dismissed it as some trash Cartoon Network thing like Ben 10. Main character does NOT look cool. Not as bad as Concord, but kinda the same safe, toothless blandness as Star Wars Outlaws.

He offered much critique to their marketing strategies and acknowledged their pivot to multiplatform games as a reality that all must accept.
I don't mind seeing games 2 years+ out at all, until recently that was fairly common, just dont promise a date (or even year, really the way things are going). And do go radio silent for years. It IS rough when very little comes out across a few years though. But I dislike not seeing full deep dive gameplay after showing a game off 2/3 times. I'm yet to be convinced of any upcoming Xbox game apart from doom, which we have seen only one time. I'm still waiting for avowed/south of midnight to wow me. I think curating and supporting the development of good games in your studios is a real skill that requires retained talent in management, studio management and workers which is something Microsoft just hasn't developed as well as its competitors. There is a bit of a stink going back over a decade there and as a result they have a lot to prove. But games take longer than ever to develop and frankly just outright buying Actiblizz always kind of felt like the "easy" way out to me.
I am still excited to see xbox mainly as a publisher going forward. Though I've already lost Hifi rush 2. So you know, mayve its not ideal on that front for me either.
I'm hoping for an xbox handheld to give Nintendo/Valve competition. Gamepass on the go should do well enough, if they can ever get near Series S parity in a reasonable form factor in a few years (maybe something weaker running PC/App versions in the interim).
The semi PC/console thing feels weird to me. If you they allow steam, how do they make money? Everyone will use steam. Will they demand a cut? Will steam give it. Hardware will need to be sold a profit in which case how do they compete with PS6/regular PCs.
The Game Pass from a first party release stand point is false. 2023 5 games. It'll be false this year too given ABK back catalogue + 2024 releases. Further, I heavily disagree about the narrative purposed in the Game Pass segment. Standard does have value, what the panel did not consider is the impact the black hole games have. For me, I like getting continuous info and seeing a roadmap because the big Live Service games do that too. It lets me plan when I can take a breather from those games to focus on a self-contained, premium experience instead. However I don't need the release date quite so far out thanks to Game Pass. Instead what's important is that Standard has the catalogue of games, since I usually miss the Day 1 and even Month 1 for titles given my spending/consumption. So being able to jump in when I've got that breather and enjoy titles, as well as benefit from sales is a great option for a cheaper price. That said, great show gents, I hope you have voices like Colt and others on more going forward.

Xbox could get back the money from not requiring an online subsciption buy the influx of new people, who would get an xbox just so they can play online for free. Then once they're in the ecosystem chances are there are going to be a good amount that will subscribe once a game pops up that they're intested in.
Free online play would be a good selling point for xbox. and especially with the cost of living going up.

I had an Xbox and an Xbox 360. After the huge fumble they did, I haven't considered even buying an Xbox. The naming scheme + the silly "you can only play games online" idea just killed my interest exactly at the time as the gamepass went full swing. No reason to own the device anymore.

They are definitely going full third party. I say that as an Xbox owner who was really hoping they would turn things around this gen. I’ve loved their software output, but it hasn’t resulted in high console sales or high game pass subscriptions, and the writing is on the wall with them putting games on other consoles

Certain games don't need to be long experiences. Not every game needs to be 60-100hrs. A nice, compact well-paced 30hr game is perfectly fine. I'd rather have a game that feels a tad too short than one that runs far too long.
Id take a 7 hour great game over a 70 hour good game any day.
