    I graduated from high school in 1989. Wind Beneath My Wings was played at the graduation ceremony. Really liked Roxette, and B52s. I saw Billy Joel Storm Front tour that year.

    Great as usual. Brings back some memories from high school. My favourites include Another Day In Paradise, the two Fine Young Cannibals tracks and The Living Years, which is a very powerful song. And who could forget Milli Vanilli or NKOTB? Or the girl-next-door style of Tiffany and Debbie Gibson?

    1989 was a great year for music (other than that B 52s song I hated then and still hate!), and it was a huge year for NKOTB and for Milli Vanilli. (We all know how things turned out for Milli Vanilli though.)

      Actually I think quite the opposite. A lot of crap music was made this year and this list proves it. Of course with a few exceptions.

    I love these compilations cause oldies stations seem to play only a select number of 80’s songs repeatedly. Some of these songs I haven’t heard in years!

    • @marcus813
      @marcus813 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My local classic hits station, Q105 (WRBQ), plays mostly '80s songs, but I don't hear more variety on the station until it runs its Saturday Night Dance Party show. Even various adult contemporary stations don't play some of these tracks for some reason.

    Shame that Milli Vanilli were exposed so publicly during a live concert. They had so much promise, with Rob Pilatus dying from a drug overdose at only 32, though at least Fabrice Morvan is still performing on his own terms nowadays.

    • @arturoromero951
      @arturoromero951 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I felt mostly bad for them because they could have gotten more vocal training and other stuff done to help them gain a lot of potential, but instead Frank Farian had to get slimy and make them lip sync most of their material. They’re great dancers and their songs bop a lot, but they ended up following through a dirty industry tactic, robbed the New Artist Grammy, and when they got exposed their career was over. People are still gonna hate on them but I don’t think it was even their fault to begin with since their business wanted them to do that.

    Thanks a lot, SRG! 1989 was a hell of a crazy year and you can hear it in almost every second of this set. Some songs made me burst into laugh (boysbands / fakebands mostly), while others brought so much nostalgia ( 1:38, 3:32, 7:40), but we should be grateful to all creators / performers. Janet 11:15 and Cher 11:26 at their best. And look how strong stood European music in the US in 1989 - 10:46, 11:09, 9:17, 1:49, 2:32, 5:33, 8:54 !

  • @HughJorgan1

    You gotta respect the Milli Vinilli scam a little bit. They fooled the world. Best music scam since Boney M (2 of the 4 didn’t sing).

    • @SzatanistaDzezowy

      Wait, really? Any more info on that with Boney M? I love some of their songs!

    • @HughJorgan1
      @HughJorgan1 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@SzatanistaDzezowy Bobby Farrel (RIP) only lip synced the words on songs like Rasputin and Ma Baker. He was great dancer and showman but couldn’t sing. Same goes for one of the women, Maizee Williams, who only mimed along with songs.
      All of Boney M’s songs were sung by Liz Mitchell and Marcia Barrett, and the male vocals on certain songs (such as Rasputin and Ma Baker) were by Frank Farian himself, the writer and creator of the group.

    In 1989, 2 opposites worlds collided. On one side, there were some really great songs from great acts (Guns N' Roses, Def Leppard, White Lion, Bon Jovi, Aerosmith, Skid Row, Mötley Crüe, Poison, White Lion, Jeff Healey Band, Great White, The Rolling Stones, Alice Cooper, Roy Orbison, Tears For Fears, The Cure, Richard Marx, Roxette, Mike + The Mechanics, Phil Collins, Love And Rockets, The B-52's, Bad English, Prince, Cyndi Lauper, Cher, Fine Young Cannibals, Bette Midler, Doobie Brothers, Natalie Cole, The Bangles, Edie Brickell & New Bohemians) and on the other side, there were some really godawful and very embarrassing stuff (Milli Vanilli, NKOTB, Madonna, Taylor Dayne, Donna Summers, Janet Jackson, Technotronic, Neneh Cherry, Bobby Brown) that anticipated the worst that was to come in the 90’s and 00’s.
    But despite some of these unbearable songs (for my ears), I keep some good memories from the 1989 year because there were still popular songs I enjoyed and a lot of great albums came out this year. And beyond these Top 10 songs, there were a lot of triumphant comebacks: The Rolling Stones, Alice Cooper, The Doobie Brothers, The B-52's (they're seen in this video), and also Neil Young, Eric Clapton, Paul McCartney, Bob Dylan, John Lee Hooker, Lou Reed, Bonnie Raitt. There were also debut albums from Garth Brooks and Lenny Kravitz. So, 1989 was finally a good year for me.

We need to get back to life, back to reality! When I pump up the volume pump up jam no gold digger will win my love it's young Neneh's sweetness that I'm thinking of. This was the year I started making my own cassette tapes from songs on the radio. Almost all of these songs are on those tapes! Really good memories ❤

    1989 is a really strong year musically. So many good songs here. Thank you 👍 My favourites are 'Dreamin'', 'Superwoman', all of the Madonna, Paula Abdul, Neneh, Janet and Guns N Roses entries, 'Eternal Flame', 'Miss You Like Crazy', 'Toy Soldiers', 'Don't Want To Lose You Now', 'Heaven', 'If I Could Turn Back Time', '18 and a Life', 'Love Shack', 'Angelia', 'Poison' (my #1 of 1989) and 'Just Like Jessie James'.
    Can I add Cher, Janet Jackson and Madonna were at their most beautiful at this point.

      It's not just beauty - personally for me "Rhythm Nation", "Just Like Jesse James" and "Like a Prayer" stand still as the most valuable songs of each of the Ladies

      I don't know of Robin Walsh, but here's a shot in the dark. Robyn - "Do you know what it takes". Her jam hit a year or 2 later.

    I'm not sure how I missed a few of these songs! I have no excuse for missing Tiffany's hits from '89. Thankfully, I heard Exposé's songs in this compilation within the last decade. "When I Looked at Him" is my favorite ballad from the group. I think this is when Exposé started to transition away from its usual freestyle sound to more of a pop/adult contemporary sound.

    Does 'peak' mean only till the end of da' year 1989,as i know a couple of songs in dis' list were no1 back in the day but here in the video it shows the peak position as #2 or #3 or even something ridiculously below that.

    • @somerandomguy_music
      @somerandomguy_music  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No, the peak position the song reached no matter in which year (in most cases 1989, in a few 1990).

    Some ideas for more videos: an updated best-of of italo-disco (your previous video was missing big italo bands, like radiorama), and also, "classic hits of the 80s that didn't make it to the US top-10" (e..g. scorpions, early madonna singles like holiday, nick kamen, etc).
