    There are two easter eggs that you missed. They are not Trek easter eggs, though. They both some from the Buffy musical episode. The first is the staff meeting where Uhura says, "I've got a theory" which was one of the songs from Buffy where they theorize about why there is singing. Then there are the Spock and M'Benga references to bunnies in the meeting that mirror Anya's comments (and solo) about bunnies.

    What I most liked was the explanation of why they were suddenly singing: pure Star Trek technobabble. In a franchise where space anomalies cause people to devolve evolution, grow masks, go emotionally unrestricted, flicker in and out reality or evil parallel universes, and where reaching top speed turns you into a salamander, a space rift that makes you expose your emotions through song is pretty standard.
    The song and dancing in I, Mudd was way weirder.

    When Spoke is signing “I’m the X”, the English Closed Caption first showed as “I’m the ex”. Then, after he sang about “solving for Y”, they corrected the other verses with “X”.

    • @peace4myheart
      @peace4myheart ปีที่แล้ว +16

    A music easter egg: I believe at the start of the big final number when we see a number of red shirts in the hallway (around 50 mins into the episode or so), the camera does a 360 turn and the crew members all dance down the hallway towards camera. The choreography of that short sequence is a reference to Jerome Robbins work in the film version of West Side Story from the opening dance number.

  • @actuallynotsteve
    @actuallynotsteve ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Uhura legit had bangers in this episode, the 2nd to last song has brilliant lyrics and a really great message. I was mindblown that all the actors actually sang for this. Jess Bush, Anson Mount, Ethan Peck, they nailed it.

    • @DawnDavidson
      @DawnDavidson ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah, that song will probably go into my head-playlist for “uplifting songs”. I used to go watch Once More With Feeling when I needed “comfort TV”, and I’d play that song in particular. I think the closing number here has just lodged itself alongside Walk Through The Fire in the same way!

    • @actuallynotsteve
      @actuallynotsteve ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DawnDavidson Agreed. That song had everything...a clever double-meaning chorus (solo/so low), a key change, insanely good vocals, and a hook I can't get out of my head.

    The Star Trek theme returns as its orchestral version at the end to confirm the anomaly has been destroyed. As opposed to the choir, more or less accapella version during the introduction. The second change to the introduction after last week’s cartoon/2D version.

  • @billkeithchannel
    @billkeithchannel ปีที่แล้ว +4

    In the lounge scene with Chapel one of the waiters was wearing the gravity boots from Star Trek: VI. The boots makes sense because when Una turned off the artificial gravity it probably did it ship wide even though we did not see that. So this crew member wanted to be prepared in case it happened again.

    Did anyone else hear the comms when La'an and Kirk were leaving the Transporter room, "Ensign Von Neumann please report to deck 6 for reassignment to engineering." Likely paying homage to the famous physicist and his work on quantum physics (probabilities). Also, the patch cords in the Jefferies tube are clearly XLR audio cables. A homage to the audio focus of the show, or maybe TOS and using whatever they had handy for props? Or it is just what SNW had handy.

    • @STho205
      @STho205 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There were three in the run of Shatner-Kirk that fit the bill:
      Ruth in Shore Leave (though quite glamorous and no context except she was very important lover of young Kirk from likely Academy Days)
      Dr Janet Wallace in The Deadly Years (context of a biological scientist)
      Carol Marcus created for Wrath 1982 to somewhat match that reference..along with an estranged son. However Kirk in the pilot didn't mention a son in reference to the Academy romance from ten years before....pretty cold if that was the pretty little lab assistant. If that was the lab tech: More like that was a narrow escape, she got pregnant and refused to abort...dang it.

      If you mean that time when Uhura sang a song to accompany Spock's instrument playing in the mess hall, that's not a "musical". That's just a song. A musical has music that is usually not accounted for in-universe and singing happening in place of dialogue, but usually isn't acknowledged as "this person was singing just now". Except of course tor circumstances like this SNW episode where the characters already know that spontaneous singing to non-existent music sources isn't normal.

    In later years this will be seen as Fonzies Shark Jump for this Trek. Especially if this is well watched and drives the producers to do more and more....as what happened with Fonzie becoming a fantasy cartoon hero in every current pop fad.
    Any series can do some inadvertently bad shows like Spocks Brain, Platos Stepchildren, Catspaw....
    Usually it is seen as crud, a product of TV or network pressure and the producers rebound from it.
    TNG and DS9 had some really silly episodes almost as bad as The Brady Bunch Variety Hour, but they rebounded back to form.
    Some series do this as a 200th episode cast party however or homage to the franchise anniversary....HOWEVER:
    SNW has only had 19 episodes and about 4-5 of them have been somewhat Disney Channel 90s sitcomish, be it Freaky Friday, Big, Pirates of the Caribbean, Risky Business/Adventures in Babysitting, Monty Python LARPing riffs.
    It is family entertainment, so that means it will be aimed at specific family age groups here and there.
    I'll watch next week's and call it a year. Probably not my cup of tea, but most of Paramount+ isn't.

They haven’t had as much time to spread their wings as DS9, and probably won’t ever get that time, due to the different way that TV works these days. But I think they’ve done a really excellent job overall, and I’m looking to see where they go next.

      @@DawnDavidson both seasons produced about a 60% above average ratio for a serious SF series. One that was very predictable overused in SF but OK filler. 2-3 episodes that were outright silly comedies or variety show gimmicks worthy of Disney Channel (Freaky Friday, The Fairy Tale drama club LARPing romp, the campy and ilogical pirate ep)
      This is exactly what happened to TOS when Paramount (the Gilligans Island, Brady Bunch, Odd Couple, Happy Days pop TV studio) took over in 1968.
      This season has the same ratio as S1. Those gimmick episodes in past series were often enjoyed by audiences as one offs at the time, but since they got big press....attempting to do them over and over in future seasons became painful circling of the drain of quality.
      If history is a guide, this does not bode well. If it bombed like the Star Wars Holiday Special, then it would be forgotten and we'd look forward to Empire Strikes Back. If that had been temporarily sucessful, then we'd have gotten the Boba Fette adventure while Leia and Luke were off undercover recruiting on another planet...the story that horrible musical variety show tried to test out.

      Buffy may be the OG but a good chunk of the cast were reaallllly bad at singing. Scrubs had the best musical episode. This one was decent with the Klingon boy-band moment making everything worth it.

      I think it was more for the actors/cast, yk throw in an episode a season where they can just have a little fun with filming kinda like the dungeons n dragons episode in the first season, filming a 10 ep show can get draining and given how cutthroat treck is with actor performance the director probably wanted to give them a break before the season finale

      I totally disagree. While this episode was unique - being a broadway style musical - music was always a part of Star Trek. Look at the 2nd episode of TOS and you will find Uhora singing to Spock while he is playing his Vulcan guitar. Strange New Worlds is completely on mission with it’s time line and a fantastic show!
