    I am a farrier and I would like to say this: How many critics on here have put shoes on a Kentucky Derby Champion? This guy obviously knows how to do a good job, in spite of what you might be observing from this one shoe on this one foot.

    I think it's more the camera angle that gives the impression the shoe is short- the heel slope is what is showing, not the bearing surface I think.

    My experience with tbred shoes is that either you fit it back like I see most American tbred farriers do or chance it to break hoof wall and have insecure nailing. In my opinion this problem exists because the nail holes in the shoes are too close to the outside of the shoe. With regards to fitting the clip I surely disapprove of this particular farrier's method. It is only a small soft aluminium clip, there is certainly no need of powerful hammering to bend it back.

    Sorry- I didn't pay closer attention- I don't think the shoe moved, and I can't tell for sure if there was an outside flare that was to be dressed down on finishing or if he just fit the shoe too tight on the outside. But, you can see all kinds of shoeing- even at the top tracks. But maybe there's still more I'm not seeing in this clip?

    I really get a kick how so many people think that they know so much better after watching a four minute video shot from 6 feet away on a handheld camera. You really think you have a better view than the farrier. Just watch the video and shut up. If you are so good a shoeing horses it'd be you at the race track doing the work.

    Nice job Ray! You have to be good to work for Pletcher. He is a top trainer. Why don't you use a hoof gauge or measure the two length?

  • @1philliph
    @1philliph 12 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Ive watch this video again and can see the issue. The hoof is imbalanced laterally as already noted. It appears the farrier has simply fit the shoe in a more balanced position on the hoof which in this case is toward the medial side. The imbalance can be seen when comparing the frog position to each quarter.
    As far as being shod short is concerned, maybe its a trick of the light.

    @appaloosian
    Hello, The shoes he put on have a toe clip that should be flat against the wall so many farriers put the hoof on the ground then use a hammer to flatten the clip. In this case, I think the horse was already tensed up because of the crowd around- not because the hammer caused any pain.

  • @1philliph
    @1philliph 13 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Can you explain why the hind shoe is smaller than the hoof wall????

  • @1philliph
    @1philliph 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think I see whats happened. The notch for toe clip is very deep which sets the shoe well back at the toe. This means that the shoe is no longer a good fit at any point on the hoof because when he sized the shoe he didnt pull the shoe back to its final fitting position before shaping the toe quarters and branches.

    Mate I wasn’t referring to the short appearance of the heel branches, but had noted them. I’m refering to the other apparent glaring defect in this shoeing job. I use the word apparent because it is almost inconceivable that a farrier would make this mistake or choose this way of shoeing. I’m not the only one who has picked it up yet you seen unable to see it.
    Its possible that the farrier is bashing the clip as its moved to the side out of the recess along with the rest of the shoe.

    Are the shoes for a race horse different then shoes on any other horses!

    • @FarrierProducts
      @FarrierProducts  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Biggest difference is they usually are made of aluminum rather than steel. They also commonly have a steel insert in the toe to help with traction and keep the aluminum from wearing too quickly.

  • @1philliph

    The video appears to show a horse shod short, and a lateral hoof wall way outside the shoe. The hoof did look out of lateral-medial balance about the frog. maybe you could set the record straight Ray.

    if the nail holes were any further in you would quick 8 out of 10 tbreds....very thin hoofwalls and shallow soled for the most part

    This is actually quiet common XD (also did you notice the outside heel being pointed in more and not extending all the way to the heel?) My farrier has had to pull off countless OTTB shoes that looked exactly like that. I think it's to save time just shoe to how the foot looks instead of trying to have the foot be in better balance and correct

    I think this would be a neat job to make a career. My problem is the bending over. I wonder if farriers have bad backs when they get older .

  • @Tzarina13
    @Tzarina13 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Wow. After putting in the first two nails he didn't even bother to check if the shoe had shifted while he was nailing it. I don't know much about shoeing horses, but I do know that when your job is vital to the wellbeing of alining creature, you should make sure you haven't made any mistakes, no matter how experienced you are at what you do. A life is depending on if you do your job right or not.

    It does appear that the shoe is a little short but... Is also hardo to see, it appears to me that I can see the buttress and when the foot is on the ground it looks like it could of use a size bigger shoe but... in the other hand I don't shoe race horses and what I have learn about shoeing race horses is that they have to be shod nice and tight with no metal hanging anywhere other than that I got to say is a great job..

    'Shod to the winner, someone has to shoe the winner, it's not a race of trot. So won, so what.
    The horseshoe resting on the sole on the outside, only on the sole - in a race trot = troubles
    Who said that speed = quality, or high level of professionalism
    The man is still 'young', let's hope he will learns to slow down

    Holy crap ! where did this guy learn is craft, That's a sloppy job. I guess that's how they do it in Kentucky. Come to Florida and we would run him off our ranch. Think how fast the horse could be if they where done right.
