Moment was actually my introduction to DT, and it remains my favourite. The feel of the whole album just takes to cloud 9 and beyond. But then again, everything DT did is gold to me. Their 'worst' album is still pretty damn solid. They're my favourite Melodic Death Metal band for that reason and more :)
DT has a fantastic discography overall. Projector might be my favourite and I strongly disagree about filler tracks on the album. The band made some bold choices for the album and is arguably their most inspired and creative work to date. I get why people were turned off to clean vocals initially, but a large part of that was immaturity in the audience thinking that all metal needed to be brutal all the time. Finding the balance between crushing riffs and melodic vocals / keys is what makes DT stand above the rest of the genre imo. They were ahead of their time in that regard. Also, dude give a like to My Negation on Character!! That song rocks!!

I just listened to The Gallery for the first time yesterday, and it was the best musical experience I've ever had. I listened to it in its entirety while on a night drive in the country, and it took me on a Dark Fantasy Adventure, The Gallery is now my GOAT album, it changed my life musically. That's why I love this era of Swedish Melodic Death Metal and Gothencore, it always reminds me of Dark Renaissance and Medieval Fantasy.
S - Character, Fiction, and The Gallery A - Haven, Damage Done, Moment B - Atoma and Construct C - The Minds I and Projector D - We Are the Void (I just don't listen to it it just feels off to me) Skydancer is just there. I would only tell people to pick it up to have the whole discography. But at times it does not even feel like a melodic death metal album to me.
Damage Done got some negative reviews on release but it's a stellar album, the sheer energy and aggression of it while staying melodic was a revelation when I first heard it.
In Tears Bereaved and The Emptiness From Which I Fed blew my fuckin mind when I discovered them. No Swedish Melo-death band was doing brutal shit like that at the time. The first two records are fuckin ferocious man!.
Character was such a mindfuck.. The punching sound of the drums, the ripping guitars, the great old school vibes, the intelligent lyrics, the whole aggression and anger spilling out of every crack.. I just love this album. My list: S: character, damage done, projector A: fiction, haven, gallery B: the minds I, atoma C: moment, we are the void D: skydancer
This is pretty much how I would rank them. I think Damage Done, Character and Fiction are by far their best. Atoma and The Gallery are quality as well!
I never hear about how Mikael between changed up his scream between Damage Done and Character. They had a bit more oomph then but the screams he does now cut through a lot better and sound more like The Gallery.
Haven is the underappreciated DT album, I know people who say that's there worst album which I don't get, album is fire. But I agree that DD, Character, and Fiction are the big 3.
Can't wait to dive into these, seeing as though I only add bands to the playlist if you recommend them. I'm still stuck on Carcass. Surgical Steel is so much fun I can barely take it. Looking forward to DT.
Very surprised to see My Negation off of Character not hearted, alongside In My Absence and the Grandest Accusation off of We Are the Void. Some of their best tracks off those albums.
Feels like no one can come close to the In Flames 90's Run with Lunar, Jesters, Whoracle and Colony. But after 2000 the tide turned more and more to other great bands like DT, Soilwork and now Insomnium and more great new stuff. Personally I love most of those bands but some aged better than others for me. Dark Tranquillity did great in the 2010s and is still going strong as Soilwork and At The Gates are. Great list. Enjoyed it very much. Atoma is my number one
I can't say whether I like Construct or Atoma more. The first DT song I listened to was For Broken Words back when I was in friggin middle school. I listened to that song every day on repeat. I always hated listening to new music because if I liked the music, I needed to buy the whole album and when I had my own music library, I was spending my father's money and he would yell at me for buying music. So in 2016 when they came out with Atoma, I was instantly hooked and bought the album. Then I was like well I have a song from Construct so might as well check that out too. I really liked Construct and then bought that too. I haven't listened to Moment yet; I don't think I'm ready to stop listening to Construct or Atoma yet.
Agree on the big 3 in S tier. Atoma is right up there, too. I actually really like Skydancer, I don't know it gets so much shit. We Are The Void really grew on me. The Gallery is my least favourite of the big 3 Gothenburg bands masterpieces, has a couple good songs but I'm not too captivated by it. I hardly ever go back to Haven or Projector, only a handful of songs I like on either. Yeah this is somewhat similar to mine, but I would switch Atoma and Character, then I’d switch Haven and Moment. Dark Tranquillity got me into Melodic Death Metal (and by extension, death metal in general) so I’ll always be grateful.
I'd give a 3/5 rating minimum for all their albums. My top 2 are Projector & Skydancer. The only one I haven't heard yet is their latest album, Moment.

Character, The Minds Eye, Projector, Construct, Atoma B. We are the void C. Moment, Skydancer, Haven Can we talk about the bonus tracks of these guys? They are often even better than some of the album tracks in the actual albums. Like Zero distance from we are the void and all bonus tracks from construct.

i think you mentioned it between the lines. the different likes concerning the different albums are based on what time you learned about them. guys like me in the age of dark tranquallity themselves "grew up" with swedish death metal in the early 90s. stuff like nihilist / unanimated / gates of ishtar...but nothing, not even today, came/comes close to what dark tranquillity gave the metal world with the gallery. its just the definition of perfection. when i hear now kids between 14-20 they are mostly used to more modern music, not only in production, but as well on stilistics. for me, when projector was released, late 90s i guess, i liked the album, though it did hardly sound like dark t. and then came the era of losing sound (productions were weak, no more heavy bassdrum, too much keys) and adding enterntaining elements, but the ones from my generation didnt really follow the evolution of them. not that they were bad, but just not interesting anymore. so, i only have 3 albums i can rate, because the rest is to me all the same with hardly any change. and yes, i do own every album physically ;) the gallery - best album of all times, ahead of maiden, metallica and the cardigans skydancer - shadow duet, a bolt of blazing gold, through ebony archways....aparty from the poor production the minds i - changed the sound for more riff oriented heavy metal songwriting. still precious. and the production is pure awesomeness. nr4 projector. hmm, yes, its good, but well....to me still the better sound than the one they play now.

@@MetalTrenches I started listening to DT right before Haven was released. I have always been more drawn to the synthy elements in their songs, and Mikael Stanne's cleans. The period of DD to Fiction, I had no access to music, so unfortunately it would be well over a decade before I heard that stuff. I think that shapes my rankings. :)
I genuinely don't understand the hate Void gets. It's basically Fiction II with a lot more synth and catchier hooks. It's not on par with "The Trilogy", but it's up there with their best. Otherwise my list is exactly the same as yours, but with Void in A.
Still loving Dark Tranquillity. They just can't make a bad album. Our tiers are very, very similar. Moment is good - it is just not great. Do a ranking of Mors Principium Est.

I only really like The Gallery and Damage Done, apart from those albums they do not do much for me - enjoyed Soilwork and In Flames at their peak a lot more, especially 90s Soilwork. Highly underrated band imo
Gotta agree with you. 90s In Flames was peak MeloDeath for me and DT just really peaked way after 2000 imo. Feel the same about Soilwork, didnt they just release Steelbath in the 90s?
@@Marc_Benjamin_Music Steelbath was released in 98, yes. I think they had a brillant run up till Natural Born Chaos in 2002. After that they lost me, but those first four Soilwork albums are peak Melo Death for me! Björn Strid is by far the most talented singer out of those three imo

Although I discovered DT with their 3rd album, the trilogy like you called it is still my favorite era of theirs. And stop referring to them as In Flames ! because god damn, In Flames were sucking so bad during that period :-) And Moment bored me to death.
Moment is in such a different vein than their trilogy of DD, Character, Fiction, so it's not surprising one would find it dull of they are more in tune with the 3. :)
I love most of their stuff, but I'm not sure what it is, but I DESPISE Construct. Somehow I think it's worse than In Flames worst stuff. (Should be impossible). Damage Done is beyond Masterpiece. One of the best up there with Jester Race from In Flames

i think you mentioned it between the lines. the different likes concerning the different albums are based on what time you learned about them. guys like me in the age of dark tranquallity themselves "grew up" with swedish death metal in the early 90s. stuff like nihilist / unanimated / gates of ishtar...but nothing, not even today, came/comes close to what dark tranquillity gave the metal world with the gallery. its just the definition of perfection. when i hear now kids between 14-20 they are mostly used to more modern music, not only in production, but as well on stilistics. for me, when projector was released, late 90s i guess, i liked the album, though it did hardly sound like dark t. and then came the era of losing sound (productions were weak, no more heavy bassdrum, too much keys) and adding enterntaining elements, but the ones from my generation didnt really follow the evolution of them. not that they were bad, but just not interesting anymore. so, i only have 3 albums i can rate, because the rest is to me all the same with hardly any change. and yes, i do own every album physically ;)
the gallery - best album of all times, ahead of maiden, metallica and the cardigans
skydancer - shadow duet, a bolt of blazing gold, through ebony archways....aparty from the poor production
the minds i - changed the sound for more riff oriented heavy metal songwriting. still precious. and the production is pure awesomeness.
nr4 projector. hmm, yes, its good, but well....to me still the better sound than the one they play now.
You have worked well otherwise, I guess the first album what someone hears it is important can influence the taste of a band of anyone. For me, it was The Mind's I.

Moment was actually a pretty good album. Catchy melodies and can be heavy at times.

@@MetalTrenches I started listening to DT right before Haven was released. I have always been more drawn to the synthy elements in their songs, and Mikael Stanne's cleans. The period of DD to Fiction, I had no access to music, so unfortunately it would be well over a decade before I heard that stuff. I think that shapes my rankings. :)

I genuinely don't understand the hate Void gets. It's basically Fiction II with a lot more synth and catchier hooks. It's not on par with "The Trilogy", but it's up there with their best. Otherwise my list is exactly the same as yours, but with Void in A.
Still loving Dark Tranquillity. They just can't make a bad album. Our tiers are very, very similar. Moment is good - it is just not great. Do a ranking of Mors Principium Est.

They actually recycle a few of their riffs from skydancer in albums like damage done and fiction
I only really like The Gallery and Damage Done, apart from those albums they do not do much for me - enjoyed Soilwork and In Flames at their peak a lot more, especially 90s Soilwork. Highly underrated band imo

Gotta agree with you. 90s In Flames was peak MeloDeath for me and DT just really peaked way after 2000 imo. Feel the same about Soilwork, didnt they just release Steelbath in the 90s?
@@Marc_Benjamin_Music Steelbath was released in 98, yes. I think they had a brillant run up till Natural Born Chaos in 2002. After that they lost me, but those first four Soilwork albums are peak Melo Death for me! Björn Strid is by far the most talented singer out of those three imo

I love early In Flames and mid DT. Can't stand Soilwork, I find it weird when they get mentioned in the same group...

I was hoping Projector would get bumped up a tier or two in this revisited version. You like it better than We Are The Void and Mind's I and you know it, but no, you won't put it there :D
Although I discovered DT with their 3rd album, the trilogy like you called it is still my favorite era of theirs. And stop referring to them as In Flames ! because god damn, In Flames were sucking so bad during that period :-) And Moment bored me to death.

Moment is in such a different vein than their trilogy of DD, Character, Fiction, so it's not surprising one would find it dull of they are more in tune with the 3. :)
The Gallery n°1 and Projector is a lot better than Haven & Atoma. For the rest I agree.
I enjoy Skydancer
I love most of their stuff, but I'm not sure what it is, but I DESPISE Construct. Somehow I think it's worse than In Flames worst stuff. (Should be impossible). There isn't a single song which I did enjoy on this album.
