  • Did we give this MGA a new life or ruin a classic?
    This 1957 MGA was given new life as an EV, but there was a catch - it was already an all Electric Powered Vehicle. Once converted by a university in the early 2000s , this yellow MGA (not a factory color bye the way) was powered by some out dated batteries and a boat load of lead acid batteries. Flash Drive Motors took this previous conversion and updated everything from the motor, batteries (Tesla of course), charging system, and even fixed the non working brakes to once again make this little English sports car proud to carry the MGA badging. The MGA sports enough horsepower and torque to make Morris Garages proud.
    Motor: 120 Volt Hyper9
    Charging and DC DC convertor: 6.6 KWH Elcon
    Adapter: Flash Drive Motors
    Transmission: Some silly Plymouth Sundance Transmission with custom everything
    Batteries: 5 Tesla Modules

    Very cool, people modify cars in all sorts of ways and people never bitch about 'ruining them'. Some classics should be preserved for sure but its cool to see how for an old chassis can go with restomods. If my z31 was just a plain jane I would EV convert it but its a 50th AE version and those are getting rare enough to go in the preserve class.

    Let's be honest, the engines that powered almost all British sports cars were never that good to begin with. They tended to leak oil, sometimes overheated and were equipped with some of the worst ignition systems on the planet. These cars were, at their best, toys for the mechanically skilled. Replacing the garbage engine for a reliable electric powertrain should mean more driving fun and less maintenance headaches. Sounds like a win to me.

      That’s been my experience. Beautiful cars needing new drivetrains

      I only get mildly upset if the engine was in working order however if the car can only be a restomod then yes make it Propane or electric keep a part of history alive that's how I roll.

    Converting these old gals to Electric, just improves the ride quality / enjoyment of driving, sooooooooo much! I have a 67 Corvair that is just waiting for conversion. No exploding, vibrating noise from the back, and a smooth effortless drive will make for a wicked cruiser!!

    Think of the tow truck drivers, how will they pay for that European vacation? when you make english cars reliable.

      This buit has definitely ruined business model of tow truck drivers specialized in old British engine cars towing.

    How well does the chasse and suspension deal with the extra weight..? Is it safe?

    Those old cars from the UK contain attractive shape in them. They are historical drivable art sculptures. However they never had any functionality even in the best times, rather were toys designed for enthusiasts to toil continuously fixing them.
    To be able to enjoy them today they need a restomod.
    The ultimate modification is hot rodding them with a spicy, modern, reliable powertrain.
    The electric powertrain perfectly fits that goal. It alows to have plenty of enjoyment while driving and to avoid frustration while fixing them.

      Nonsense - they're perfectly serviceable when set up correctly. The sound of a combustion engine and shifting a manual transmission is central to the experience of driving these cars.

    Is there any difference in performance between the 120v and 144v hyper9 motors?

    • @MarkSanders77A
      @MarkSanders77A หลายเดือนก่อน

      same - HV is limited to 500A vs std 750Amps - HV needs more batteries so heavier overall, eg 6 vs 5 Tesla Modules, But has slightly less voltage sag under acceleration. #LotusElon uses 5 modules and 120 with Hyper 9 and is 20Kg lighter than with ICE > th-cam.com/video/OSQ5GhCHAig/w-d-xo.htmlsi=1yMU2W-YCRJuQ5yJ

    Interestin, But I would only consider converting my Merc SLK if I got more than 300 BHP and at least 400 miles range and no more weight. So I guess a little more to go.

    you put an incendiary device in a car and believe you've done a smart thing.......

    • @jamesfleischman6848
      @jamesfleischman6848 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I think you meant removed the incendiary device. A gasoline powered car is more than 10 times more likely to catch on fire.

      It depends on your budget what you will use the car for, weekends and summer rides or touring? The MX5 is an excellent upgrade.

    Soon don't just apologise but be happy the pro combustion movement doesn't hunt EV swaps and EVs in general.

    That's not an upgrade, that's terrible, what an uninteresting car that is now,a classic car is about the engine,80%!

      Is it worth it for the milage you do in a classic. 3x the weight with no more value but 80x the cost. Replace Suspension, brakes, wheels. tyres before you even start the conversion. And electric car are falling out of favour for newer lighter tec.

  • @madnesssoft2012
    @madnesssoft2012 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

    You're not ruining it, you're saving it from the scrap heap. Screw ICE, EV for the future, convert those cars! It's literally a motor swap! How much more custom do you get?
